August is upon us and we've all just had a great week
at the fantastic Uckfield Festival, we have a great photo
round up of those 10 days in July (p16-19).
Hot on the heels of the Cricket World Cup (well done
England), we have a report on the first tournament
played by our Under 10's cricket club in Pevensey (p60)
This month, we look at the Volunteer Centre's first
'Celebrate Youth" awards evening looking at some of the
great things the next generation are doing locally (p32-
33)
Bex tells us how she and the twins are getting ready for
summer, and Michelle reminds us why relaxation in
the sun is a great aid to wellbeing (p38).
There's still time to nominate your Community
Champion for an Uckfield FM Community Award (p12),
and in case you need some convincing, we've given you
8 reasons why you should nominate (p13).
Nicki takes us on a journey through buying 'preloved'
toys and the pitfalls and unexpected joys it can bring.
(p28).
We were lucky enough to meet the children at the
Harland's Primary School production of 'Olivia' at the
end of term - read about the performance, and how
other schools marked the end of primary school for
their Year 6 leavers (p18).
Plus there's the full round up of sport, news from the
Lions, Rotary Club, Brighter Uckfield, Active Uckfield
GUIDES VISIT POLICE
Uckfield Guides had a fantastic evening at
Uckfield Police Station recently meeting
police Officers Dan and Scott. The guides
were shown around the station seeing
the remaining cell, and also got the treat
of sitting in one of the police cars and
hearing a siren demonstration!
The evening was set up to finish off their
Girlguiding Laser Met Police Badge, for the
final part of the evening they managed to
fit in a quick Police led beat around the
high street.
NEWS FROM THE MEADS
The Meads held its first Dementia review
clinic on 29 June with Dr. Ellis and the
Dementia Nurse Specialist. These clinics
are held fortnightly and the Doctors are
training up more Health Care Assistants to
help us with the reviews.
Waiting times - the waiting time for routine
appointments with a Doctor is currently
down to just two weeks. At one time last
winter it was six weeks or more.
Telephone numbers - patients are being
encouraged to check if the phone numbers
the surgery has on its records are correct
and up to date
Appointment reminders by text - patients
need to give the Surgery their express
consent before the surgery can text them -
consent can be in writing or given over the
phone.
CHAILEY REPAIR CAFÉ
CELEBRATES ITS FIRST
BIRTHDAY ON 10TH
AUGUST!
One of this year’s most successful
local initiatives celebrates its first
birthday on 10th August. Chailey
Repair Café, is part of the worldwide
movement where volunteer
experts repair things free of charge,
(donations are invited to cover
running costs). They opened
their doors for the first time on
August 11th 2018 and now have 37
volunteers who have repaired over
500 items in the past 12 months.
The café opens from 1000 – 1300hrs
on the second Saturday of each
month at Chailey Village Hall on the
A275 next to the Five Bells pub. For
more information, contact them at:
SAVING MONEY
CHASING UNPAID
COUNCIL TAX
Wealden District Council’s Digital
technology is helping chase late
council tax payers. By using an
automated system to send out
online reminders to residents
who have missed a council
tax payment, the Council has
dramatically reduced the cost of
the process.
SECURITY EXPERTS - ADVICE
BEFORE TRAVELLING
As UK schools break up for the summer
holidays, security experts want
holidaymakers in Sussex to join the
millions of people who have watched vital
safety information before they fly. The
'Run, Hide, Tell International' video, which
can be found on youtube, highlights what
to do in the unlikely event of a gun or knife
terror attack. Search for "Stay Safe Abroad:
Advice to Holidaymakers"
communitynews
The success of this new digital
initiative is partly due to its threepronged
strategy to ensure they
find the best way of reaching a
late-paying resident.
A resident will first receive an
automated phone call, featuring
the voice of one of the Council’s
Customer Services team. This
reminds them they have not paid,
and provides options of how they
can pay and who to contact. If the
telephone call is not answered,
the resident is then sent a text
message and an email with the
same message.
UCKFIELD COLLEGE
ENRICHMENT WEEK
Students from Uckfield College
recently enjoyed their enrichment
week, where each student has
a week away from their usual
timetable and enjoys activities
and trips organised by the school.
From tie dying, cooking and
health and safety courses to day
trips to Harry Potter World and
beyond to Disney Land Paris and
PSV Eindhoven.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office also
advises holidaymakers to read the FCO
Travel Advice and to sign up for email
alerts to be notified of any updates for
their destination, either before or during
travel.
SOAPBOX RACE
A team from Uckfield - The Jurassic Sparks
- recently took part in the RedBull Soapbox
Race in London, Teams are judged on both
the time taken to complete the course, as
well as creativity of their design and the
showmanship of a performance at the start
of the race, meaning the team with the
fastest time is not necessarily the winner.
Matt Burtensham, Jordan Dinan, Bill
Thompson and Max Goodwin placed 54th
and are now looking forward to 2021.
ACT NOW TO GET YOUR PET A
PASSPORT
The RSPCA are urging pet owners to act
now if they want to avoid being turned
back at the border when travelling to the
EU later this year with their cat or dog.
As the Government warns that pet
passports could take four months to be
processed if the UK leave the EU without
a deal this October, they’re strongly
recommending that pet owners start
their applications now.
Once the UK leaves the EU, current pet
passports will not be valid for travel to
Europe and a new type of passport will
have to be applied for. But if the UK
is no longer recognised by the EU as a
'trusted country', essential checks such
as rabies testing could take an additional
three months to complete, meaning
there could be a four month wait for
pet passports to be processed. For more
information can be found on the RSPCA
website.
WATCH OUT FOR NEW SCAMS
Trading Standards officers are stepping
up the fight against fraudsters after
uncovering new scams across East
Sussex.
New scams reported include;
• A phone call from someone claiming
to be from the Inland Revenue saying
money was owed and, if it wasn’t paid,
the person would be prosecuted
• A phone call informing the resident
that their bank account had been
compromised and that they needed to
move their money to a safe account
• Door step sellers claiming to be recently
out of prison and trying to make some
money by selling overpriced, poor quality
household items
Information about scams or suspected
scams can be reported to Action Fraud
TAKE CARE ON THE EDGE
If you’re heading for a trip to the seaside this summer, East Sussex County Council are
urging visitors to stay safe especially around the White Cliffs.
Each year thousands of tonnes of chalk fall from the cliffs, which stretch from the
edge of Eastbourne, past Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters and Seaford Head.
In recent years there have been an increasing number of instances where people have
stood near the edge of the fragile cliffs to look at the beach below or take a selfie, or
walked along the beach close to the base of the cliffs, despite warning signs.
With the summer months attracting even more visitors wanting to see and photograph
the famous white cliffs and walk along the coastal path or beaches, councils and
organisations along the East Sussex coast are highlighting the dangers.
The message from the campaign is “to anyone visiting the area is enjoy the amazing
views safely by keeping well away from the edge and base of the cliffs when on the
beaches, and be aware of the tide.”
If visitors see anyone in danger or witness someone who has fallen, they are urged to
call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard and not attempt to rescue them.

What a
PERFORMANCE!
The end of year is marked in many ways in the primary schools across
Uckfield. Harlands Primary School in Ridgewood marked the occasion with
a stellar performance, involving all 120 children from years 3-6, with those
children from Year 6 taking on lead roles in this production of 'Olivia'. They
performed three full shows on consecutive days, to packed audiences of
friends, family and other students. After weeks of preparation, they thrilled the
crowds with their singing, dancing and acting prowess.
'Olivia' is an interesting take on the
Oliver Twist story. This brilliant and
innovative show, set in Victorian
times, traces the steps of Olivia, from
downtrodden orphan to star of the
stage. On her journey to the bright lights
of London, she is befriended by Eliza
Doolittle [from "My Fair Lady"] and,
after a series of adventures, becomes
a singer in a new Gilbert and Sullivan
show, thanks to the unlikely assistance
of Fagin and The Artful Dodger.
Eliza and the flower-sellers are joined
by other major female roles, and with
orphans, "Poor School" girls, and
essential chorus work, you will have
no difficulty in casting this femaleorientated
show.
There are splendid cameos for George
Bernard Shaw, Ebenezer Scrooge,
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.
There were outstanding performances
from Christie Hart and Sophie Whyte
as Olivia and Eliza respectively, with
Lauren Yabsley, Freya Darke, Isla
18
Gilbert, Macey Donald, Jessica
Rumble, Molly Rowland, Zara
Peirce and Katie Tomes all taking
on key roles.
Callum Jones and Peter Gibson
were excellent as Fagin and Dodger
(with Peter heroically taking on
a 'Modern Major General-esque
number with gusto). Hugo Brown
was a ritzy George Bernard-Shaw.
Alfie Draper and Harry Keyte
took us in a different direction,
as problem solvers Holmes and
Watson. Sebastian Hawkings
was an amusing Dickens, with a
memorable performance (not least
for his 'hee-hawing'). And Yassine
Laamim was a convincing judge (a
future career, perhaps?)
They were all brilliantly supported
by Ewan Hooker, Jack Kirby,
Jack Giles, Ella Funnell, Reggie
Whithorn, Jack D'Silva, Thomas
Miller, Euan Carroll, Jayden Jeffery,
Jake Burchell, Jake Deacon, Josh
Reynolds, Josse Trevor-Jones,
Phoebe Kedwards, Imogen Van
Damme, Ben Markwick and Sonny
Causton.
Joseph Tomes and Dillon Grest
kept the show moving, as the
musical maestros.
With a choir made up of all the
students from years 3 and 4, this
was an impressive performance,
and a fitting end to an enjoyable
school year.
A special mention must go to Miss
Knott, the Year 6 teacher, whose
enthusiasm was contagious in
every performance. No wonder the
children so obviously enjoyed it!
SCHOOLS CELEBRATE
YEAR 6 LEAVERS
Schools around the area marked the end of
the school year - and the final year for Year 6
children - in different ways, including:
• Manor students performing ‘Pirates
of the Curry Bean’ and held a Leavers
Assembly on the final day of term;
• Rocks Park held a Leavers Assembly,
Leavers Party and held a kids v teachers
rounder match, as well as a Year 5 and 6
performance of ‘Cinderalla Rockafella’;
• St Philips held their Leavers Assembly
as well as a Year 6 production, 'Pirates
of the Curry Bean';
• Little Horsted held a whole school
performance of ‘The Keymaster’, and
a Leavers Service was held at Little
Horsted church, followed by a whole
school picnic;
• Buxted held an and of year
performance of ‘Oh what a Knight’, as
well as a Leavers Service at the church;
• Holy Cross Years 5 and 6 held an end of
year musical performance, a Leavers
Ceremony at Worth Abbey and Leavers
Service at Holy Cross Church;
• Bonners Maresfield Key Stage 2
children performed ‘Rock Bottom’, the
Year 6 childrend ‘took over’ the school,
running it for a day (after applying for
the jobs they wanted), and there was a
Leavers Assembly at St Bartholomews
church.
• Framfield Key Stage 2 children
performed 'Robin Hood" and held a
leavers assembly
UCKFIELD PHAB:
MAGIC CARPET LAUNCH PARTY
Uckfield Phab are thrilled and delighted that they have received a grant
from The National Lottery Community Fund to purchase a Magic Carpet
for the club.
The Magic Carpet enables people with
complex needs and without to interact
with music activities, sports activities,
reading and social activities.
Thanks to a generous grant from Uckfield
Lions and together with a community
Lottery Grant the club was able to
purchase a ‘Magic Carpet’. The idea is
that interactive images are projected onto
the floor, table or onto a wheelchair this
makes it totally inclusive and follows
Phab’s ethos of ‘Making More of Life
Together’
The club held a thank you party
on Saturday 22nd of June and were
honoured that the Mayor of Uckfield Cllr
Spike Mayhew attended the event along
with members of Uckfield Lions and Cllr
Paul Sparks who is also a Trustee of the
club. Members of the club enjoyed the
many activities and got to use the Magic
Carpet.
The Magic Carpet was first seen when
Chair and Trustee Janine Williams visited
a disability show in Birmingham at the
NEC and was determined to fundraise
for one, but luckily the support from
the Lions meant they did not have to
fundraise and the company that makes
the unit Sensory Guru are located in
Buxted so it was made locally and used
locally.
The club is for ages 9 and above for
people with and without disabilities and
it is a chance to come to the Youth Club
and have lots of fun.
UCKFIELD LIONS CHOOSE
BENFICIARY FOR CAR RALLY
by Frank Phillips
communitymatters
In 2003 Uckfield Lions held their first Classic Car rally. The
event, held in September each year, is now a major day in the
Lion's calendar. Meeting at about 10am at The Half Way House
Inn on the Lewes Road, Uckfield, and after a cup of coffee, the
cars then undertake a pictorial run around the Kent & Sussex
countryside of about 50 miles to finish back at the Halfway
House Inn for lunch.
All the classic cars are parked in the field behind the pub where owners & visitors can
meet & view the cars. A pig roast is then available together with a refreshing drink from
the bar.
This year’s Rally will be held on 29th
September starting once again at the
Halfway House Inn on the Lewes Road
Isfield.
Uckfield Lions are delighted to announce
that the beneficiary of the Car Rally will be
UCKFIELD'S WONDERFUL PLANTERS
by Ian Smith
Volunteers have been working hard to clear paths and scraps
of land that have been overwhelmed by plant growth as the
growing season has really taken off in the period mid-June to
mid-July.
One area that the group is particularly
proud of is the 'garden bank' outside the
town's library (photo attached). Leafcovered
branches on the tree by the traffic
lights outside the police station have been
lopped off as they seemed to be responsible
for the lights phasing not operating
correctly because the leaves were blocking
the view of the traffic for the camera at the
top of the lights column .... simples!
Meanwhile, litter-picking activities
continue unabated. We believe that
Uckfield has one of the cleanest and tidiest
High Streets in Wealden District and we are
pleased that the District Council Chairman
is due to pay a visit to Uckfield in August to
meet volunteers.
In the September edition of Uckfield
Matters we will be featuring the Brighter
Uckfield Annual Garden Competition.
My journey:
Living with less
by Nicki Richardson
Or 'gifting' with less... learning
lessons from Last Christmas.
Don't panic - I've not forgotten it's
August. But a big clear out has got me
thinking about what lies ahead for the
rest of this year. Last November, money
was tight and Christmas was just around
the corner, my children were making
whisperings of what they
would like to see under
the tree come the 25th
December, and panic was
starting to set in.
Looking at their lists I
realised the majority of
things could easily be
preloved. No adding more
‘brand new plastic’ or
unecessary packaging to my household.
My children would be absolutely
thrilled by their gifts whatever, so I took
the plunge and started searching.
Eldest daughter asked for k’nex and
youngest daughter wanted Buzz and
Woody.
"I make it a habit
that when we
need something
new I also check
to see if a second
hand or preloved
version will do. "
I’ll admit I checked how much it would
be to 'buy new' and was stunned to see
that I'd be spending well over £100 to
have these for my children to open on
Christmas morning.
We just didnt have the extra money to
spend on presents, so my
next stop was a search of
the Facebook selling pages,
eBay and then of course the
local charity shops! Hurrah,
Buzz and Woody along with a
bonus slinky dog were listed
just round the corner and at
a 10th of the cost of one of
them new. Just imagine my
delight when I went to pick up my new
purchases and the lady had a Paw Patrol
tower which she said I could have for a
£1. (this little gem was sneakily added
to my youngest daughters list just 2 days
earlier… win win.)
Now comes the reason for filling you
28
in on my awesome pre loved purchases.
Life isnt plain sailing, and sometimes
saving money in the right places also has
a a positive secondary and sometimes
unintentional effect to our environment,
local area and untlimately, to our planet.
The look of absolute delight covering my
4 year olds entire face when she opened
the Toy Story preloved toys was followed
5 months later with a shriek of "mummy
come quick there's something wrong with
Woody". Tears in her eyes, she pulls his
cord and instead of hearing, ‘you’re my
favourite deputy’ or ‘theres a snake in my
boot’ Woody made a pained sound like he
had a hernia. The cord was well a truly
stuck,. Woody was presented to daddy's
"fix it shop" in the hope he could get him
talking again.
Every finger in the house was crossed that
Woody just needed new batteries….
Sadly it wasn’t to be and after several
hours of time with daddy’s screw driver we
accepted that Woody was now mute. My
daughter calmly told Woody she still loved
him even if he couldn’t talk.
SPOILER AHEAD !! - STOP READING IF
YOU HAVEN'T SEEN TOY STORY 4
Leap ahead to July 2019, where the
culmination of the fourth Toy Story film
leads to the revelation that Woody gives
up his voicebox to help his friend, and
inadvertantly we have the new 'Toy Story
4 Woody' and what was a broken toy has
once again been recyled this time purely
by accident. Or was it ??
Some might say another happy ending,
after all one man's trash is another man's
treasure.
GETTING
summer
SET FOR
fun
by Bex Maini
The summer holidays are imminent as I write this and I'm part excited and part
intimidated by all those days to fill with fun for the twins! Although they're still
at our childminder every week as I work part time, we will have a lot more days
off together and I've been thinking of plans to keep them occupied. I've started
a list of activities and tried to include some free or cheap things so it doesn't get
too expensive with trips out all the time.
We've already had some summer fun prior
to the schools breaking up with Woodlands
Festival over in Kent, eating watermelon in
the garden (just the smell reminds me of
holidays), trampolining in the sun, playing
in sprinklers (THE best way to cool down!),
learning to ride bikes, playing in the park
(my friend introduced us to Peacehaven park
and it's epic!), BBQs in the garden, puddle
jumping in the garden, fort building on the
sofa...
Some of the things already on my summer
'must do' list are:
Making a bird feeder, bug hunting with
magnifying glasses, a photo challenge
with the kids' cameras, more bike riding to
increase their confidence at Bewl Water and
the Cuckoo Trail, Drusilla's, Knockhatch, fruit
picking at Oast Farm, exploring Uckfield's
nature reserve, Sheffield Park for a picnic and
tree climbing, bubble fun, pony riding...
34
The twins have also both had a haircut for
the summer, they both had really long hair,
Priya's was right down to her bum! She had
33cm chopped off which we sent to The Little
Princess Trust to help make real hair wigs
for children affected by cancer treatment or
other conditions. I documented the whole
morning, from the final epic hair wash to
the cut in Buxted Village Barber, Denise is SO
great with kids and puts up with me taking
hundreds of photos while she works! We
think she really suits her new do, it's certainly
MUCH easier to manage and much cooler for
the summer.
So that's been the summer - so far. Let's wait
and see what the summer holidays bring;
before life changes again as we embark on
the SCHOOL adventure!!
RIDGEWOOD VILLAGE HALL:
A VITAL COMMUNITY ASSET
Ridgewood Village hall was originally constructed by a group of local people who realised
the need for a community facility. In the mid-80s with the help of local tradesman,
sponsorship funds from local business and the use of second hand materials including
a maple floor reclaimed from a local RAF station (still the floor today) Ridgewood village
Hall was born.
Used for local quizzes, old time musical
events, fairs and jumble sales it was a busy
community hub.
Still to this day Ridgewood village
hall is run by a management
committee made up
entirely of unpaid
volunteers, and, over
the years the committee
has changed faces as well as
grown. Current committee members are
Karen Bedwell, Natasha Leopard, Rebecca
Christian, John Gothard, Michael Lamb,
Deidre Browning, Jennifer Browning, Linda
Wilson Smith, Ian Noble, Ian Smith, Marion
Love, Nicki Richardson, Colin White and
Deborah Lamb.
Their tasks have been focused on
relentless fundraising, hoping to raise
money to significantly develop
the facility and enhance its
uses, to make it fit to serve the
needs of our growing town.
From the first Ridgewood Village Hall
Bunny hunt, events now include a summer
fair, quiz nights, live bands, family friendly
fireworks and Christmas Fair - raising nearly
£20,000 for the RVH development projects.
38
With a new website to enhance
community outreach and make
taking bookings easier (supported by
Sam Thurley), the hall relies on the
local community, from support for
the planning phase to attending the
community fundraising events, with
over 1000 people attending the family
friendly fireworks.
DEVELOPING THE HALL
2019/20 will be an exciting time
for Ridgewood Village Hall and an
opportunity to develop the only
community facility in the southern
end of Uckfield. It’s a chance for the
entire community to pull together
to fulfil the potential at Ridgewood
Village Hall.
There are three modernisation plans
in progress, which will be funded
from the community events, support
from local council and businesses,
and external grants. These phases are
A: Refurbish the Village Hall
B: Wild garden and Carpark
C: Extension to the East Side of the
Village Hall
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
30 October is the Ridgewood Village
Hall will be the Annual General
Meeting. All residents are invited to
attend this and new supporters and
volunteers are welcome to join the
committee.
Come along with your family to one of
the wonderful Community events held
at the hall raising funds to support
this fantastic part of Uckfield.
If you have some spare time, the
committee are always looking for
volunteers - this can be an hour of
your time or even several hours a
week, helping at the events or behind
the scenes throughout the year - it all
helps.
Above all, the main message from the
committee is for the local community
to use the hall and enjoy all that is has
to offer.
2019 COMMITTEE
The current committee consists of
volunteers, all donating time to improve
the hall, raise funds and keep the
Ridgewood residents engaged in a valuable
community asset. Our 2019 Committee is:
Karen Bedwell - Chairman
Natasha Leopard - Vice chair
Rebecca Christian - Secretary
John Gothard - Planning officer,
Michael Lamb - Treasurer,
Deidre Browning - Neighbourhood rep
Marion Love - Booking officer
Ian Noble and Ian Smith - Resident Reps
Nicki Richardson Social media
Colin White and Deborah Lamb - Hall hire
reps
James Edwards - Town Council
representative
The committee is supported by Sam
Thurley of SJT who provided a brand new
website and continues to provide free
support for it and Derek Ranns ,Caretaker
and Health and safety officer at the hall.
HERE COMES SUMMER...
We all love a British Summer don’t we! The one thing that unites British people
during August is a strange desire to talk about the weather and one of the few
certainties in life is that the British weather at this time of year is…. changeable!
Of course, those with families of school age
children often ‘enjoy’ different dynamics
during August as the long holiday break
runs in to the following month. As I write,
I’m thinking about some time away and I
hope that you all enjoy some down-time
this summer…
Holidays can be times of reflection, planning
and generally ‘recharging of batteries’.
Naturally, it’s important that we take timeout
occasionally and although August is
probably the main holiday month, we will
continue at the Chamber to offer you a
networking opportunity this month with a
Breakfast event at the popular Highlands
Inn on Friday 23 August.
During Uckfield Festival week, I attended
the Celebration of Youth event organised
by Uckfield Volunteer Centre. There were
some brilliant examples of young people
volunteering and some were recognised
with awards. We will continue that theme
at our August breakfast as we welcome
a Queen’s Scout amongst Uckfield
businesses.
At our recent Members’ meeting we
heard about many ways in which Uckfield
employers could support the development
of careers advice and provide opportunities
for young people to experience the work
place via the ESCC scheme ‘Open Doors’.
We will follow this up when we visit Uckfield
College for our 18th September meeting,
which is open for booking to members now.
Of course, if you’re not a Chamber member
and would like to attend or know more,
please get in touch.
It’s good to celebrate success and I want
to encourage as many Uckfield businesses
as possible to take some time to enter the
East Sussex Business Awards. The awards
evening will be held here in Uckfield at East
Sussex National on Thursday 26 September
and entries will close on the same date
as our breakfast, 23 August so easy to
remember! I look forward to being part of
the judging panel!
Finally, the Chamber is proud to sponsor
Uckfield’s ‘Weald on the Field’ festival on
Saturday 3 August, which may well be
done and dusted by the time you
get to read this!
Simply Summer
by Michelle Pearce
Well here we are – August – one of the calendar’s true high-points when many of us
take time off, whether it is a week or two away from home or the bank holiday weekend
at the end of the month.
Whatever you do try to make time for a little
stillness this August, to sit or lie in an open
place, idle away a few hours, and savour
this warmest time of year. Sounds like a fine
excuse for a good old-fashioned picnic to
me!
time and time again, can taste so very good!
I wonder what your childhood picnics
consisted of? I wonder how they would taste
today? And if you don’t yet have a picnic
tradition, I wonder what you would put on
Most of my ‘70s childhood picnics were
endured behind a wind-break on the
windswept beaches of North Devon. Mum
and Dad perched on their chairs, him
hiding beneath his hallmark floppy hat, her
gazing wistfully out to sea, us kids inevitably
shivering beneath damp towels after an
over-optimistic encounter with the sea.
Otherwise our picnics were soggy Dartmooraffairs,
taken battened down in wellies and
anoraks. ‘Making the most of a poor day’,
it was called. But whatever the weather
picnics always and truly lift my heart – it is
amazing how the simplest of foods, eaten
outdoors (or crunched into a Ford Anglia)
the menu were you to start one this August?
Whilst I have experimented with all kinds
of formats over the years, for me nothing
quite beats those childhood picnics. I think
it is time for me to buy a pack of crusty
rolls, stuff them with ham, get a paper bag
of English tomatoes, some Golden Wonder
crisps, a Mr Kipling apple pie, throw down
an old rug in one of Uckfield’s lovely parks
and while away a few hours.
No phone, no stuff to do, just me, munching
away, watching the world do its thing for a
hour or two, and when I’ve had my fill, lying
back on the earth cloud-watching.
FAREWELL TO CHRISTINE
BY CLLR CHRIS MACVE
Christine Wheatley, Assistant Town
Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer,
will be retiring at the end of August.
Uckfield Town Council would like to take
this opportunity to thank her for her 30
years of wonderful service.
During her time at Uckfield, Christine
has worked with three Town Clerks and
covered the periods of vacancy between
them as Acting Town Clerk, whilst still
fulfilling her duties as Responsible
Financial Officer. Not only has she
maintained the immaculate financial
records but consistently received
commendations from the auditors and
guided all the Councillors that have
served during her tenure.
Not just finance
But Christine, being Christine, was not
satisfied with just dealing with the
council's finances, she also looks after
the recreation grounds and cemetery,
Christine's efforts on the Hughes Way play area
upgrade resulted in a successful project delivery
Ron Hill Photographic
together with all of the grounds staff,
the floral displays in the town and the
Christmas lights. Christine also clerks
the Environment and Leisure Committee
which includes resolving all matters
within that committee and countless
other general issues to ensure the
continued smooth running of the council.
Hard act to follow
Her attention to detail, high standards of
accuracy, care towards members of staff
and attitude to the public will be very
difficult to replace. Alongside all of this,
the various Councillors that have served
during these years have all benefited from
her clear and concise advice, guidance
and help. She will be greatly missed by us
all and we wish her all the best for a very
long and happy retirement!
SUPPORTING WITH COMMUNITY GRANTS
One of the ways that the Town Council supports the local community is by
awarding grants to local organisations every financial year. The intention is
to support groups and charities that provide a service or benefit to primarily
Uckfield residents. A total of £43,367 will be paid in Community Grant Funding
for the financial period 2019/20 shared between 24 local voluntary groups and
organisations.
BY CLLR PAUL SPARKS
In the past awards have been made
to groups that provide major events
for the town such as Uckfield Festival
and the Bonfire & Carnival Society and
also including smaller amounts to the
Royal British Legion and New Town
Action Group. In addition these grants
have supported the development of
Uckfield FM, Brighter Uckfield, Twinning
Association together with many
charities that care for the elderly and
disabled.
Now open for applications
Applications are currently welcomed
for this years' funding with Grant Forms
available from the Town Council and
via www.uckfieldtc.gov.uk which must
be returned with relevant documents by
"To achieve high class community radio
output you need to use top quality studio
equipment together with top class presenters.
At Uckfield FM all this is achieved thanks to
the considerable support of the Town Council's
grants system." Ian Smith, Chairman
"Helping us by maintaining our mower keeps
this community garden tidy and attractve"
Velda Reed, Chair, New Town Action Group
Friday 23 August 2019. All applications
will be considered by a finance meeting
of the Town Council, held in public,
during September. Representatives of
applicant organisations are invited to
attend so that they can answer any
queries Town Councillors may have.
After this meeting, recommendations
for grant payments will be made and
those successful will have the funds
paid at the start of the following
financial year in April/May 2020.
Great benefit to the town
There is no doubt that this grant
scheme has been extremely beneficial
to many groups and organisations
within our town and some of our big
events and valuable local services
would struggle without this important
financial support.
LAST MONTH IN YOUR COUNCIL
Access is the theme this month…
Improved Wi-Fi in your local Civic
Centre and Luxfords Restaurant
We have recently upgraded our WI-FI
system to improve online access
for our customers and service users
during their visit to the Civic Centre
and Luxfords Restaurant. Previously
the system would struggle with large
numbers. Only last week we recorded
90 users on the system at one time,
and the system was coping well with
the demand and range of sites being
accessed or downloaded.
months and they were keen to receive
initial feedback from the local parishes,
what they needed to consider in their
future improvement plan.
Replacing and repairing
Members suggested repairing or
replacing a number of the stiles in
the local area and that accessibility
and the surface materials used be
improved where possible for those
with reduced mobility and pushchairs.
Members also said that accessibility
could be improved for dog walkers (a
number of the current access points
were blocked).
Celebrating our green open spaces
Members felt that Uckfield was
very fortunate to have a number of
rights of way that cross into or travel
adjacent to the town boundary and
that East Sussex County Council
BUSY ON SATURDAY 10TH OF AUGUST?
JOIN THE WEALDEN ACTIVITY DAYS
by Jeremy Hallett
Wealden District Council and Active Uckfield have had great responses from
local organisations for their joint Activity day. There will be new things to try
and see as well as old favourites.
52
Scuba 2000 will be present showing us
and telling us things that we probably
wouldn't think relate to Scuba Diving.
Come and try the Tennis Serve Speed
Challenge: What speed do you think you
can hit a tennis ball? We'll be looking
to see if a serve or normal shot can
exceed 100 on the day. It's unlikely, but
a LeTennis coach hit 99mph the last
time I saw this challenge taken on. So
come and show us what you're made
of! Challenge Uckfield, challenge your
friends and family or just challenge
yourself - but most importantly come
and have fun.
What else on the day? There are more
sports and health/fitness activities than
ever before, and Wealden are focusing
on bringing extra to the day. Councillor
Philip Lunn, Cabinet member for Public
Health and Community Safety said:
“People of all ages can learn about the
benefits of a healthier lifestyle, take
part in activities to burn off the calories.
Arts and crafts are great for general
wellbeing. There’s healthy eating advice
and an opportunity to see some of our
wonderful local community services in
action."
“Soft play
and activity
sessions give
children
access to
different
games which
they may not
have tried before." The day will be great.
It just needs you there to take part or
just enjoy watching others do so as that's
good for you own wellbeing.
Finally, we've just had our annual
Stoolball evening and it was what I
would call a "Speed Stoolball" event.
Teams have 5 minutes in bat then 5
minutes fielding. Every player is fully
involved throughout, because when
you're batting you run every ball and
if you get out you actually stay in. Of
course the team loses something if
you're out, so you have to run a bit faster
(or use a runner alongside you if you're
a walking sportsman). Obviously there's
more to it than that, but that's the basics
of what makes it great, fully inclusive
fun. We'd like to do another evening so
if you're interested please email me and
we'll see when we can get together.
For more information about anything here, or if you want to promote your
organisation at the Activity Day please contact Jeremy Hallett on 07876 275031 or
began in Uckfield, having been scolded
in September 1918 by Lady Agnes Baden-
members celebrated with an exhibition at
WEALDEN CLIMATE EMERGENCY
PETITION LAUNCH
A group of young teenagers from The
Montessori place Easons Green launched a
petition asking Wealden District Council to hit
net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The group were speaking to members of the
public in the Waitrose Uckfield car park at
10.30am on Friday morning . This car park
and the centre of Uckfield were under a metre
of floodwater during the 2000 floods.
Ingrid Burniston, aged 13, who started the
petition said, ‘We desperately need Wealden
District Council – like every council – to get
fossil fuel free in ten years.'
Nina Ovenden, aged 14, another of the
student organisers said, ‘The time for
promises and empty words is over. Change is
needed at every level. Even though Wealden
is small, everything counts in the race to
decarbonise Britain.'
Anna Liles was first in to base camp on
Saturday night followed shortly after by
Jackie Love, Lynne Ireland, Gemma Morris
They all had some rest and started again at
at Winchester. Anna was the first to cross the
line at Winchester Cathedral doing the last 4
miles in flip flops! Wendy and Lynne not long
NEW SEASON FIXTURES FOR
AFC UCKFIELD TOWN
AFC Uckfield Town will be looking to emulate their memorable, recordbreaking
season of 2018-2019, as the new football season gets underway
this month.
Uckfield, who will be aiming to improve
on last season’s seventh place finish in
the Premier Division of the Southern
Combination League, have some attractivelooking
home fixtures to begin their
campaign. They also face a testing opening
away match at Eastbourne Town on 6
August.
The team will be hoping to enjoy another
successful run in the FA Cup, in which they
have been drawn away to Welling Town in
the Extra Preliminary Round on 10 August.
A victory there will give Uckfield an away tie
at VCD Athletic a fortnight later.
In the national FA Vase, Uckfield have
been given a bye until the second round
because of their brilliant run in last season’s
competition.
go one better this time – they have been
drawn at home to AFC Varndeanians in
their opening round.
UCKFIELD ANDERIDA CRICKET CLUB
CONTINUE FIGHTING RELEGATION
Despite the continued valiant efforts of
skipper Dave Tungate, who scored another
century in the defeat by Bells Yew Green’s
second team last month, Uckfield Anderida
have continued to struggle at the bottom of
the table, and they go into the final month
of the season needing to string a run of
wins together to give them hope of avoiding
relegation from Division Seven East of the
Sussex Cricket League.
Uckfield’s remaining home games at the
Victoria Ground are against Pett on 10
August and Newhaven on 24 August. In
between, on 17 August, Uckfield face what
could be a pivotal match at neighbours
and fellow strugglers Maresfield. Uckfield
end their league campaign on 31 August
with a daunting visit to title-chasing
Herstmonceux.
MARESFIELD LADIES TENNIS SUCCESS
The Maresfield Ladies Tennis team
enjoyed a highly successful season by
finishing runners-up to Roehampton
in the South East Regional Team
Tennis league, after defeating Queens
Club in their final match of the
season. Maresfield lost only one
game throughout the summer in
which they competed against several
bigger clubs.
Well done to the players for their
excellent achievement: Aziza Aubin,
Kyria Dunford, Emily Gordon,
JUNIOR CRICKET GOING FROM
STRENGTH TO STRENGTH IN UCKFIELD
by Peter Holman
Uckfield junior cricketers
attended their first under
10’s soft ball tournament
in Pevensey last weekend.
The weather was kind
and with England in
the World Cup final on
the same day, cricket
was at the forefront of
everyone’s mind.
After a short warm up,
Uckfield opened up against
Polegate and Stone Cross
batting first and scored
255 with Zachary Holman
staring with the bat.
Polegate finished with
262, winning by 7 runs. In the second
game against Hastings, Uckfield batted
second and scored 268 with Hastings
being restricted to 261 after some
excellent bowling from David Newman
including a maiden over and a wicket.
Roberstbridge were too strong in the
last game and Uckfield finished with 1
win and 2 losses.
The full Uckfield side was: William
Morgan, Lucas O’Neill, Zachary
Holman, Imogen Holman, David
Newman, Jacob Causton and William
Newman.
Coaches Peter and Samantha Holman
said “We were so proud to see our
juniors compete. They all worked so
hard and showed a great amount of
sportsmanship. We are keen to get them
playing more matches and hope to
organise some friendly games against
other local teams in the coming weeks.”
Uckfield junior cricket is at the Victoria
every Saturday morning, 10.30 – 11.30
until 3rd August. For more information
