HERE COMES SUMMER...<br />

We all love a British Summer don’t we! The one thing that unites British people<br />

during <strong>August</strong> is a strange desire to talk about the weather and one of the few<br />

certainties in life is that the British weather at this time of year is…. changeable!<br />

Of course, those with families of school age<br />

children often ‘enjoy’ different dynamics<br />

during <strong>August</strong> as the long holiday break<br />

runs in to the following month. As I write,<br />

I’m thinking about some time away and I<br />

hope that you all enjoy some down-time<br />

this summer…<br />

Holidays can be times of reflection, planning<br />

and generally ‘recharging of batteries’.<br />

Naturally, it’s important that we take timeout<br />

occasionally and although <strong>August</strong> is<br />

probably the main holiday month, we will<br />

continue at the Chamber to offer you a<br />

networking opportunity this month with a<br />

Breakfast event at the popular Highlands<br />

Inn on Friday 23 <strong>August</strong>.<br />

During <strong>Uckfield</strong> Festival week, I attended<br />

the Celebration of Youth event organised<br />

by <strong>Uckfield</strong> Volunteer Centre. There were<br />

some brilliant examples of young people<br />

volunteering and some were recognised<br />

with awards. We will continue that theme<br />

at our <strong>August</strong> breakfast as we welcome<br />

a Queen’s Scout amongst <strong>Uckfield</strong><br />

businesses.<br />

At our recent Members’ meeting we<br />

heard about many ways in which <strong>Uckfield</strong><br />

employers could support the development<br />

of careers advice and provide opportunities<br />

for young people to experience the work<br />

place via the ESCC scheme ‘Open Doors’.<br />

We will follow this up when we visit <strong>Uckfield</strong><br />

College for our 18th September meeting,<br />

which is open for booking to members now.<br />

Of course, if you’re not a Chamber member<br />

and would like to attend or know more,<br />

please get in touch.<br />

It’s good to celebrate success and I want<br />

to encourage as many <strong>Uckfield</strong> businesses<br />

as possible to take some time to enter the<br />

East Sussex Business Awards. The awards<br />

evening will be held here in <strong>Uckfield</strong> at East<br />

Sussex National on Thursday 26 September<br />

and entries will close on the same date<br />

as our breakfast, 23 <strong>August</strong> so easy to<br />

remember! I look forward to being part of<br />

the judging panel!<br />

Finally, the Chamber is proud to sponsor<br />

<strong>Uckfield</strong>’s ‘Weald on the Field’ festival on<br />

Saturday 3 <strong>August</strong>, which may well be<br />

done and dusted by the time you<br />

get to read this!<br />
