communitymatters BUSY ON SATURDAY 10TH OF AUGUST? JOIN THE WEALDEN ACTIVITY DAYS by Jeremy Hallett Wealden District Council and Active Uckfield have had great responses from local organisations for their joint Activity day. There will be new things to try and see as well as old favourites. 52 Scuba 2000 will be present showing us and telling us things that we probably wouldn't think relate to Scuba Diving. Come and try the Tennis Serve Speed Challenge: What speed do you think you can hit a tennis ball? We'll be looking to see if a serve or normal shot can exceed 100 on the day. It's unlikely, but a LeTennis coach hit 99mph the last time I saw this challenge taken on. So come and show us what you're made of! Challenge Uckfield, challenge your friends and family or just challenge yourself - but most importantly come and have fun. What else on the day? There are more sports and health/fitness activities than ever before, and Wealden are focusing on bringing extra to the day. Councillor Philip Lunn, Cabinet member for Public Health and Community Safety said: “People of all ages can learn about the benefits of a healthier lifestyle, take part in activities to burn off the calories. Arts and crafts are great for general wellbeing. There’s healthy eating advice and an opportunity to see some of our wonderful local community services in action." “Soft play and activity sessions give children access to different games which they may not have tried before." The day will be great. It just needs you there to take part or just enjoy watching others do so as that's good for you own wellbeing. Finally, we've just had our annual Stoolball evening and it was what I would call a "Speed Stoolball" event. Teams have 5 minutes in bat then 5 minutes fielding. Every player is fully involved throughout, because when you're batting you run every ball and if you get out you actually stay in. Of course the team loses something if you're out, so you have to run a bit faster (or use a runner alongside you if you're a walking sportsman). Obviously there's more to it than that, but that's the basics of what makes it great, fully inclusive fun. We'd like to do another evening so if you're interested please email me and we'll see when we can get together.
