July is here and with the Uckfield Festival just days away,
I’m sure we are all hoping for some glorious sunshine,
especially after the deluge June has delivered.
This month, we meet Mick Kirby and hear all about his
upcoming Kilimanjaro trek raising money for worthy
causes, the Amputation Foundation and Limbpower.
(p11-12) We look back on 20 years of the Uckfield
Festival, yes it really has been 20 years.(p16-17).
Bex tells us all about her day at the South of England
Show and, despite the wet weather, she managed to see
all the sights and delights this wonderful showcase has
to offer,(p50-52). Michelle reminds us why Yoga is a
great help to our physical and mental wellbeing. (p32-
33).
Theres still time to nominate your Community
Champion for an Uckfield FM Community Award (p18).
Uckfield is powering on with its dream of being plastic
free, we get an update from them and find out all the
wonderful local businesses who have got on board
and have signed up to be one of Uckfield's water refill
stations, so take your bottle with you, (page 30).
Plus there's the full round up of sport, news from the
Lions, Rotary Club, Brighter Uckfield and more.
And tell us what YOU want to read about and what you
want to know, too. Get in touch!
DON'T BE FOOLED BY FAKE CALLS
Wealden Police are warning residents
to be cautious of phone calls from
people pretending to be the Police.
The caller states they are from
the Police, calling about recent
transactions on your bank cards,
and you need to visit your bank.
Please be advised the Police would
NOT call you to discuss anything to
do with your bank account or bank
transactions (unless you had already
reported to them and they are already
investigating). Should you have any
concerns, or have been victim to
similar please contact 101.
INCREASED TOWN PATROLS BY
POLICE
Since the beginning of June, officers
from across Sussex Police have been
working additional shifts in order to
provide a significant police presence,
in Uckfield and Crowborough. Officers
are conducting patrols with the
specific focus of providing a reassuring
presence to the local communities, and
to be on hand to tackle issues of antisocial
behaviour.
Areas subject of these extra patrols
include; Uckfield Town Centre and the
railway stations in both Towns; housing
areas including Ridgewood and Manor
Park, local colleges. Inspector Jon Gross
said: ‘To have additional resources,
drawn from across the Force, is a real
boost to our objective of addressing
recent incidents of crime and antisocial
behaviour’.
£1.4M IMPROVEMENTS TO SEVEN
SISTERS COUNTRY PARK
The South Downs National Park
Authority is set to take over the
running of the Seven Sisters Country
Park and is announcing £1.4m plans to
improve the area.
Following a decision by East Sussex
County Council, ownership of the
280-hectare site will transfer to the
National Park Authority by March
2020.
The authority is to improve the habitat
for seven animal and plant species.
It is also planning to improve the
nature trails, wildlife watching
facilities, the visitor centre and
landscape to be bio-diverse.
GLASS RECYCLING CHANGES AS
NEW CONTRACT LAUNCHES
Changes to how glass is collected for
recycling in Uckfield are on the way
as a new waste and recycling contract
launches.
Since June 29, new contractor, Biffa
are responsible for bin collections in
the area. Residents no longer need to
separate recyclable glass bottles and
jars. Instead, they can place them in
the recycling bin or pink sack along
with other recyclable materials,
including paper, cardboard and cans.
However, there will be a minor change
to what can be recycled as Tetrapaks,
such as juice or long-life milk will
need to be placed into waste bins,
so they can be sent to the Newhaven
Energy Recovery Facility.
PROTECT YOURSELF AND THE
COUNTRYSIDE FROM FLY TIPPING
Did you know - if you're having rubbish
from your home and you don't ensure the
person removing it is properly licenced,
then you could face a Fixed Penalty
Notice of £200 or end up in court?
This includes leaving items outside a
property in the hope they will ‘disappear’
– you must know who is removing your
waste and ensure they are registered with
the Environment Agency. Scrap metal
and other unwanted items left outside
encourages unlicensed waste carriers to
drive around residential areas looking for
‘easy money’.
Check if a waste carrier is registered by
contacting Wealden Council. Make sure
you keep a receipt or record of details and
finally don’t use anyone who cold calls.
SPACE CHASE SUMMER READING
CHALLENGE 2019
The Summer Reading Challenge for 4 to
11 year olds takes place in all libraries
during the summer holidays. The Challenge
celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
We are delighted to announce that the
theme for this year’s Summer Reading
Challenge will be Space Chase!
Space Chase starts Saturday 13 July and
ends Saturday 14 September
Your child needs to read six books of their
choice (printed books or ebooks) and
collect prizes along the way – all for free. If
they complete the Challenge, they’ll get a
medal and certificate.
Each child needs a library card and PIN
to join the Challenge and to reserve and
download books online.
TOP 20 from 20 FE
0
1. The first event in Millennium Year 2000
featured The Pedal Car Grand Prix - 7
home-made entries including a peddling
bath tub complete with working shower!!
This evolved into the Kit Car Grand Prix.
2. Uckfield FM was born from the 2002 Big
Day.
3.Over 500 schoolchildren were involved
in The Ghana project (2003-2005). A riot
of African music and colour. Uckfield
residents took part in many different
processions including Notting Hill and the
Thames festival.
4.The Big Day Parade. Local primary
schools, Spiritus, the stilt walkers , the
drumming band all became involved.
Summer in Uckfield has never been the
same since.
5.No Fit State circus - was much loved “It
made me want to run away with them!”
said a nostalgic committee member. But it
was also wonderful to be able to use their
big top for other events and it provided an
exciting focal point.
6.In 2006 the Festival teamed up with local
artists to offer Open Houses, exhibitions,
demonstrations and workshops. Out of
this grew the Art Trail and then Bridge Arts.
7. The Festival Club has provided a
constant source of new talent and free
entertainment including in 2007 the
appearance of a young man from Uckfield
called Rory Graham - now known as
Rag’n’Bone Man.
8.Dance Explosion - 2008 brought a
wonderful opportunity for everyone
in Uckfield to get involved in dance,
movement and mime with professional
help. “Strictly”came early to Uckfield!
9.Last Night of the Proms. Uckfield Concert
Brass, Mid Sussex Sinfonia, Imperial Male
Voice Choir and wonderful soloists were all
involved in this Festival favourite - and in
2011 there was a performance of the 1812
overture in the Luxford Field complete with
fireworks. It will happen again this year.
10.Brian Phillips’ historic walks. Over the
shared with his enthusiastic fellow walkers
his encyclopaedic knowledge of local
history
11. Uckfield Music Club have collaborated
best national and international classical
parade into the amazing Uckfield Oak an
illuminated sculpture on Luxford Field in
the evening.
13. In2012 the Olympic Torch was moving
from Crowborough to Lewes but not
coming through Uckfield so we organised
our own Torch Run which involved
Uckfield College and Uckfield’s six primary
schools. The torch was designed by
students at Uckfield College. Every school
brought their pupils to watch and children
lined the whole route.
14. Continental visits from our twin towns
included the fabulous Greenhorns Jazz
band from Quickborn in Germany, in
2014, French markets and distinguished
medieval music group from Arques -la-
Bataille.

Festival in 2016 Now there is a whole day of
18. Celebrate Youth. This event on July
11th reminds us of the vital contribution
that young people of Uckfield have made
- Summer Vibes, Battle of the Bands, Teen
Spirit, Uckfield's Got Talent and so many youth
drama events.
19. Blues and Roots is an extension of the
Uckfield Festival! Graham Pope and Graham
Smith's knowledge of the local music scene
has produced some memorable gigs in the
Festival. Blues and Roots Festival is now firmly
established in its own right as a much valued
feast of earthy music for our many local Blues
lovers .
© RON HILL
20. Kites! Every year has brought new
are introducing a Family Kite Day on Saturday
13 July
BONUS! The committee 2000-2019! Without this
small dedicated group of volunteers the Festival
would never happen. They start in September
and work throughout the year to get the week’s
events together. Thank you for giving us the
UCKFIELD FESTIVAL!!
© RON HILL
The work of Ron Hill (hillphotographic.com)
over many years has allowed Uckfield to retain
a fabulous photographic record of the Festival.
A 25TH BIRTHDAY PRESENT WITH A DIFFERENCE
This beautiful flower bed, which was designed and made by Nice ’n Easy, celebrates the
opening of the Uckfield Community Hospital 25 years ago on 31st of May. The hospital did not
“just happen”, it was built by the amazing generosity of the Uckfield community. The whole
enterprise was undertaken through the hard work and skill of Uckfield Community League of
Friends. It is fitting that 25 years later, this picture shows Bernard Trew as he was one of the
main “drivers” of the original fund raising exercise. A proud moment indeed for him, the League
of Friends, and above all the Uckfield community.
On occasions like this it is important just to
reflect on how the community contributed to
the project and what a first class service it now
provides. This was not just a “replacement”
for the old hospital but a sea change in health
care for the community. For example the
new hospital had full operating and surgical
services, a modern radiology & diagnostic
department. The new hospital also had a
modern ward layout with side rooms six bed
area, and a day area. The hospital provided
space for the Beechwood services and a GP
practice. The hospital now has a modern
Minor Injuries unit, and a site for on call, out
of hours GP services.
The League of Friends continues to support
the hospital, providing improvements in the
quality of the working environment, to benefit
staff and patients alike. The ever-expanding
benefits of new technologies also create
great demands on funding. This summer
the League of Friends provided the funds to
replace all the x-ray equipment with the state
of the art digital x-ray machines. These are
quicker, results in lower levels of radiation for
patients and staff but are cheaper to run.
The League of Friends is a charity and funded
by you the community. If you feel able to
support the Friends by donation or legacy,
please go the website where you can find out
how to donate. uckfieldhospitalfriends.org/
Mick and Jackie in training

MICK MOVES
Mountains
Taking on a challenge like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s
highest peak – is not for the faint hearted. With most return treks
taking six to nine days, through four climactic zones, preparation
is key. Uckfield resident, Mick Kirby, is taking on the challenge in
just a few months – and is taking his preparation very seriously.
Mick Kirby is an man who moves
mountains – literally! Following a
stroke at the age of 48, some 12 years
ago, Mick had his left arm amputated
below the elbow in 2015. This meant
he had to re-train in his beloved
sport of clay pigeon shooting, and
become a right-handed shooter. He
is internationally recognised in the
sport, competing across the world,
in both disabled and able bodied
competitions.
This year Mick has set himself a new
challenge: In October, along with
17 other amputees, Mick and his
partner, Jackie, will be scaling the
slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. They will
be raising money for two charities:
Limbpower (www.limbpower.
com)which engages amputees and
individuals with limb impairments
in physical activity, sport and the
arts to improve quality of life and
to aid lifelong rehabilitation; and
the Amputation Foundation (www.
amputationfoundation.org) which
is often the first point of call for
amputees, families and friends of
amputees, and hospital professionals
to contact to obtain immediate
and impartial support from other
amputees and support organisations.
Mick says: “I am now back to a
work pattern that suits me and my
disabilities. I have strong family
support that helps. I have had
challenges the past 12 years, but when
offered the chance to ascend Mount
Kilimanjaro with 17 other amputees. I
was quick to say yes.”
Mick and Jackie hope to raise £10,000
UCKFIELD LIONS END A SUCCESSFUL 50TH YEAR
by Ellie Thackway
at their Summer Fun Day. Photo by Ron Hill.
Since a Lions International club was founded in Uckfield 50 years
ago, Uckfield Lions have raised thousands of pounds for local and
international causes, and have provided a huge variety of service
activities for our local community. As we come to the end of a
Lion’s year, and welcome a new President for the club, it is time to
reflect back on this special 50th year.
In the last year, we have proudly supported
the following charities:
• Bevern Trust to replace Aircon units
• Air Ambulance Sussex, Surrey and
Kent
• Lions International Disaster Fund in
Africa, India, Philippines and Gomel
Orphanage in Belarus
• Defibrillators in Uckfield
• Starfish Charity
• Uckfield PHAB Magic Carpet
• Carers for the Disabled
• Children’s Respite Trust to provide a
lift
• Service by Emergency Rider
Volunteers
• Plus many more organisations and
individuals!
On top of these donations, we have
provided:
• Free diabetes screening
• Free prostate cancer screening
• Message in a Bottle/Wallet resources
• Lifeskills and Safety in Action
resources for local schools
• Our minibus for community group
• Plus much more.
To celebrate our 50th year, we have
presented four new decorated benches
to the Town Council for Luxford Field,
together with a ‘Remembrance’ bench.
The work of Uckfield Lions never stops,
and we look forward to a new Lion’s year
with incoming President John Carvey. If
you would like to know more about the
work of Uckfield Lions or find out how
to get involved, take a look at our website
UCKFIELD'S WONDERFUL PLANTERS
by Ian Smith
Even if we say so ourselves, the planters at the town’s road entry
points are looking wonderful. There was a scare for the first
couple of weeks as the weather had been very dry. However, our
prayers were answered in the middle of June in no uncertain
manner, and our water butts now runneth over.
BU volunteers have completed building
the new planter at the entrance to Browns
Lane. Residents of Manor Park have paid
for this facility, and Brighter Uckfield
were happy to help achieve the Resident
Association’s goal. It will surely be looking
wonderful by the time this publication
reaches you.
Volunteers, at last, were able to tackle
overgrown areas alongside the Applegreen
garage and along the pavement edge of
the wall at the bottom end of the Tesco car
park. It was good to get the petrol-driven
strimmer and lawn mower back into
action, and both started with little bother
after their winter lay-off.
ROTARY IN FESTIVAL MODE
by Howard Dingwall
“Everything good, everything magical, happens between the months of June and August”
It is fanciful to imagine that American
author Jenny Han had the Uckfield
Festival in mind when she wrote the
above, but, if she had, it would have
been most apt.
Uckfield Rotary Club will be
contributing to the good and the magic
of this wonderful community event.
Do come and visit our stand at ‘The
Big Day’, where you will be able to
participate in a game of chance, or
purchase a ticket in our annual draw.
We will also have on display a kit car
which will be participating in the
Uckfield Grand Prix. The Club, with
Uckfield College, organises the Grand
Prix held in TR Fastenings Car Park on
Sunday 14th July.
Once again we
will be sponsoring
this event
and providing
refreshments and
ice creams. On
Saturday 13th July
we will be participating in another
Festival event, namely the Hempstead
Meadows Nature Reserve Open Day
where we will be assisting the Reserve
Ranger who will be leading guided
walks.
Do come and join us and say hello at
the above events. Help us to support
our community and join in the magic.
VOLUNTEERING IN THE SUMMER SUNSHINE
by Zoe McGarry
communitymatters
Summer is a great time for outdoor volunteering. At the Volunteer
Centre we have opportunities for you to get involved with larger charities
like the National Trust to smaller groups and projects needing help.
DO YOU ENJOY GARDENING?
The Beechwood Unit at our Community
Hospital provides inpatient services
for people with dementia. They need
a gardener to help maintain the unit’s
courtyard garden. The role involves
looking after pot plants and raised beds
and supporting patients with staff to
engage with the garden. Could you help?
COULD YOU DO CONSERVATION WORK?
Uckfield Town Council owns over 50 acres
of natural space including Hempstead
Meadows and West Park nature reserves.
Volunteers are always needed to help the
Ranger maintain these areas. At this time
of year the work involves helping with
construction and dealing with vegetation.
No prior knowledge or expertise is
needed, just a reasonable level of fitness.
You can volunteer for a couple of hours or
a whole day and you can give regular or
occasional support.
DO YOU LOVE ANIMALS?
Spring Farm Alpacas in Fletching need
a carer to help look after their animals.
They were established in 2000 when they
started with just three alpacas. Now the
herd is made up of about one hundred.
The farm’s aim is to improve the genetics
and appearance of each new generation
of alpaca offspring. They need a volunteer
to help feed and check the animals.
If you could spare the time to help
with any of these roles or would
like information about other
volunteering opportunities, please visit
uckfieldvolunteer.org.uk. You can email
us at office@uckfieldvolunteer.org.uk
or pop in and see us at 79 High Street
opposite the flower shop.
Have a wonderful summer.
THE MILLENNIUM ARTS BOOST
Uckfield art scene's growth since 2000
by Tilly Christie
The year 2000 was a turning point in Uckfield's history: a quick Google throws up lots of
information about the terrible flooding; but there was a more lasting (and happier) legacy from
the Uckfield Festival - which was the foundation for the Art Trail, the Film Society, and Uckfield
FM, demonstrating that a town's artistic life can benefit when given a little local encouragement.
With a strong home town in which
to flourish, two local residents
- Philomena Harmsworth and
Natalie Banton have seen their
artistic work develop and progress
in the years following the turn of
the century.
In 2000 Philomena Harmsworth
had trained as a Technical
Arts Theatre Designer, and
was working in designing and
producing scenery for film,
television and theatre. She
describes it as a fast-paced, wellpaid
and sociable – but very male
– word.
26
The arrival of her two small
children prompted a stepchange
to producing her own
work “Painting, painting and
more painting.” After several
years, keen to move beyond the
limitations of purely decorative
art styles, she embraced new
artistic media to express
her complex creative drive.
Describing her work today,

Natalie, then a teenager at UCTC, has
become a fully-fledged photographer.
Training in creating digital art and the use
of Photoshop, many of her photographs
are of the natural environment. Natalie
is passionate about promoting the
therapeutic benefits of nature and
believes venturing outside can help
anyone struggling with life stresses. Also
working in photographic portraiture,
Natalie believes it is important to get
a professional to capture those special
images, as experience with light and
composition makes a big difference to
the end results. Starting with a ‘point and
shoot’ camera, Natalie now uses a DSLR
and iPhone to capture her images; www.
HAVE YOU GOT THE BOTTLE TO
CHANGE? CHANGE ONE THING: REFILL
It’s Plastic Free July: a perfect time to change one thing and stop buying
bottled water. The Refill Uckfield scheme launched in June, and there are
Refill Stations across the town and beyond, all proudly displaying the Refill
sticker. So, don’t leave home without your bottle.
Plastic Free Uckfield’s campaign is gaining
momentum, and one of its first successes
has been the launch of Refill Uckfield. The
scheme launched on National Refill Day,
19th June, and encourages residents to fill
bottles from businesses who have signed
up, rather than buying single-use plastic
bottles of water.
people who are coordinating the Refill
mission in their local area. There are now
almost 200 schemes across the UK where
local businesses will provide a refill for
your water bottle.”
Martin added: “We are starting to work
towards the Surfers Against Sewage
objectives and have met objective number
Following the recent Town Council
elections the Council re-affirmed its
commitment to SAS and Refill. I am also
working with three establishments to
reduce single-use plastic in the work place
in accordance with SAS guidelines.”
Mindful Movement
by Michelle Pearce
Yoga is our chance to unwind – literally - and pause for breath in our busy
and often breathless worlds.
34
One of yoga’s deep pleasures is, for me,
its utter simplicity. So long as you are
wearing clothes that you can move in and
have a level surface beneath your feet, or
a supportive chair beneath your bottom,
you can practice yoga! You don’t even need
expensive trainers- bare feet are best - and
with summer finally here yoga outdoors
– in the garden, the park or on the beach -
can be a sublime way of interacting with a
landscape and a moment more fully.
Every time we roll out the mat at home,
turn up to a class or lie down outside, yoga
offers us a real chance to come back down
to earth, take a little precious time with
ourselves and to notice where we are tense
or tired. It is a chance to slow down, to
notice the breath and ease away tension
through carefully tailored movements
designed to invite mental and physical
release and renewal.
If you are thinking of starting yoga it
is worth doing some research into the
different types on offer, and making
sure it is suitable for your aims, health
and levels of fitness. Hot and Bikram
yogas are physically demanding and take
place in heated rooms - not for the feint
hearted! The disciplined flow of Ashtanga
yoga’s increasingly difficult series, is also
hugely popular with those who want a
yoga workout. There is also the classical

precision of Iyengar yoga and the body
of more general approaches generally
classified as ‘Hatha’ yoga. At the softer
end of the spectrum we find, amongst
others, yoga based on the work of
Vanda Scaravelli, a quiet practice which
favours a ‘felt’ approach
underpinned with
anatomical
integrity,
aiming
to release
the spine
by the allimportant
wave of
the breath.
This is my
chosen
yoga, my
wellbeinglynchpin.
If you’re
going to a
new class,
try to have
a chat with
the teacher
to get a feel for their
training and approach,
and share with them any
issues or injuries you
may have so they can take these into
account. A teacher who takes time to
adapt postures for your body, and who
is ready with advice and hands-on to
help is ideal.
‘But I’m not bendy enough for yoga.’ I
hear some of you cry! To this I will say
that yoga is as much about stability as
flexibility. It is a balance of these two
opposites, and in my experience people
with greater natural mobility can find
yoga as challenging as those with more
restricted physiques.
"It is a chance to
slow down, to
notice the breath
and ease away
tension through
carefully tailored
movements
designed to
invite mental and
physical release
and renewal."
It is important not to force your body
into positions it is not comfortable with
and to back off if you experience any
pain. Over time you might find you
enjoy some of the more challenging
postures, but injuries and strains can
occur if you strive too hard or force
your body to go where it isn’t happy.
If we do encounter
resistance in a posture, how
do we respond emotionally,
mentally? We might find
that we feel frustrated
or impatient to progress,
but can we take a deep
breath and find a way of
approaching our limitations
and ourselves with more
patience, kindness even?
Yoga is as much about our
mental state as our physical
one and traditionally was
part of preparation of
meditation
So if you feel inspired,
do get out there and give
yoga a try. Uckfield and
the surrounding towns
and villages are blessed
with some wonderful yoga
teachers - you will find
them in our gyms, village
halls, health clubs, NHS centres and
of course bespoke studios. The choice
of teachers and approaches available
locally is delightfully broad and it is
worth persevering until you find the
one which feels right for you.
So get out there, throw down your yoga
mat or beach towel, close your eyes and
feel the support of the earth beneath
you….
UCKFIELD & DISTRICT
CHAMBER of COMMERCE
photo: Matt Harquail
TIME TO REMEMBER & TIME TO LOOK
Uckfield remembers that it was 20 years ago when Festival first began as
we approached the momentous date that was 31 December 1999… And
50 years ago, man first walked on the moon without much activity since…
And recently, who can’t have failed to have been touched by the 75th
anniversary of D-day.
We have been trying to ascertain the
start date of your town’s chamber of
commerce; we know that it goes back as
far as 1932, as we do have photographic
evidence of a Christmas dinner of that
year! If anyone knows of evidence earlier
than this date, we’d love to hear from
you. We can’t be too far off celebrating a
Centenary.
Of course, change is important in any
organisation, as we progress and respond
to current and future needs. Recently, I
attended an event organised by SELEP
(our local enterprise partnership) looking
at the matter of their Digital Skills
Partnership and how it will enhance the
economy and quality of life in the South
East. Quite alarmingly, the message is
that even if every school / college leaver
achieves their potential, there will still be
huge skill gaps in the digital workspace,
which means that the likes of you and I will
need to upskill or re-skill.
At our next meeting on Wednesday
10 July, we will host speakers from
ESCC, who will share some of their
innovative schemes to help support the
Government’s desire to increase the level
of careers input for today’s young people.
If you are reading this as a member,
please book your place and if your
business isn’t involved with the Chamber
and you’d like to attend, please simply get
in touch.
Finally, in the last month we have
introduced a Gallery section (via the
Events tab) to our website, of previous
events – see if you can spot yourself or
maybe see what you’ve been missing
out on!
Here, at the Chamber, we will aim to bring
you updates on such important matters at
our bi-monthly meetings, the cost of which
we will subsidise for our members.
HIGH STREET OR HOME BASED?
by Sue Edwards
The Uckfield Festival is celebrating its 20th year. Since its first year,
during those years business in Uckfield has thrived, despite major
knock backs such as floods and fire.
It is inevitable that such incidents will
have substantial negative impact on
the town, however we are lucky to have
strong community groups to help in
such difficult times. Big events such as
the Uckfield Festival, Weald on the Field
and the Uckfield Carnival continue to
play a big part in keeping Uckfield ‘on
the map’. These events continue to be
well supported by local business.
HOW HAS UCKFIELD HIGH
STREET CHANGED?
In past years Uckfield has seen some
shops standing empty for months.
However more recently, even in
uncertain times, it is good to see that
Uckfield continues to be a popular and
profitable place to expand business or
indeed set up a new one. Some evidence
of this can be seen in the High Street,
with quicker turnover of empty shops,
and some businesses expanding into
larger, more prominent premises.
HIGH STREET OR HOME-BASED?
For many business owners, much can
be gained from regularly attending
networking events, and over the last
few years these have increased locally.
As a home-based business owner
myself, I consistently meet others in
a similar situation who find it easier
to work from home, and in fact don’t
need a High Street premises. This
is particularly the case for parents
juggling business with bringing up a
family. Not only is working from home
the cheapest option, but it can help
business owners to create the sought
after work/life balance that we all crave.
With a thriving business community
in Uckfield, there is plenty of business
support available, without the need to
go further afield.
SOUTH
on
OF
show
ENGLAND
by Bex Maini
I forget just how massive the South of England Show is! Nik and I went along on the
Friday in June to explore the stands, displays and shows and found so much to see, eat
and drink, it was epic! There is so much going on with plenty to entertain little ones
and grown ups alike. We happened to be there "on duty" without the kids in order to
take photos and make notes but we kept seeing things the twins would love and had
we not already had plans to be at Woodlands family festival that weekend, we would
have gone back on the Saturday with them.
My personal favourites were the
blacksmith competitions, the wine
walk, the motocross stunt bikers,
the WI displays and of course, the
shopping! I bagged myself a bargain
waterproof coat in a gorgeous bright
yellow with polka dot lining, it's come
in handy already with our somewhat
wet June.
The Young Artisans tent was so
inspiring with some truly gorgeous
designs by such talented young
people, we spotted a few from
Uckfield College! The three crowned
winners ranged in age from 17 to 21.
The blacksmiths made for some
awesome photo opportunities with
the sparks, fire and steam against the
dark backgrounds, it looks like such
hard work (and it really is, I tried it
once helping make a spike for St.
Marks' Church gate back in 2017.
52

There were some beautiful flowers and brightly coloured WI made crafts in the
WI/flower tent, there were lots of categories with some amazing interpretations in
each craft competition, of course I was drawn to the rainbow ones ;)
The Wine Walk was informative and fun, we
really enjoyed learning more about some
of our local vineyards, I never knew there
were so many and we've now been inspired
to plan a tour of some East Sussex vineyards
this summer which will make a great feature
so watch this space come autumn time! Of
course, having a few tasters of the various
offerings was fun too, the English sparkling
wines we have locally are truly wonderful!
There's a lot more going on with lots of
agricultural areas, various farm animal
competitions and displays with sheepshearing
demos and the like. There are lots
of food stands with food to eat as well as
plenty to take home such as local cheeses,
meats, booze and sweet treats. We bought
some Sussex Charmer to take home which
is a mix of mature cheddar and Parmesan so
has a lovely deep, tangy flavour and is almost
gone already.
Despite the rather dingy weather with a
few downpours, we had a brilliant day out!
Natalie Miller, who was brought
up in Uckfield, has been selected
to captain England in the World
which take place in South Africa at
the beginning of August.
NEW SEASON BECKONS FOR
AFC UCKFIELD TOWN
After their momentous season in 2018-2019, AFC Uckfield Town are back in
pre-season training ahead of their new campaign in the Premier Division of the
Southern Combination League, which gets underway next month.
Uckfield begin their programme of
pre-season friendlies with a visit to
Southwick on 13 July, before they
renew acquaintances on 16 July with
AFC Croydon Athletic, with whom
Uckfield played out two memorable cup
games last season. Another attractive
pre-season highlight is on 25 July,
when Uckfield welcome local rivals
Crowborough to the Oaks.
Details of all forthcoming pre-season
friendlies are on the club’s Twitter feed
UPDATE FROM UCKFIELD BOWLS CLUB
Photos courtesy of Roy Fletcher
Uckfield Bowls Club held its popular Fred King Invitation Open Triples tournament last
month. The weather stayed fine for the competition, which features 16 clubs across Sussex
and was won by Peter Menniss, Valerie Menniss and Ian Scutt from Wealden Bowls Club; the
runners-up being Debbie Juden, Tony Mercer and Ian Prior from Woodingdean.
Meanwhile, Uckfield has enjoyed a good start
in both the Mid Sussex League (MSL) and the
John Spriggs League. They beat Burgess Hill
away by 8 points to 2 in the first MSL fixture,
followed by an emphatic 10-0 home win
against Felbridge. Results were echoed in the
John Spriggs League, with an 8-2 victory at
home against Burgess Hill, and a 10-0 away
win at Felbridge.
Uckfield's results in the Horam League have
however been disappointing, with losses
against Herstmonceux, Hellingly, Wadhurst
and Rotherfield, with one victory against
Groombridge and a draw against Ringmer.
Uckfield's season has been tinged with
sadness, as their President, Mike Wilson,
passed away on 9 June after a long illness. A
minute's silence was held before the home
match against Felbridge as a mark of respect.
If you or your local sports club have a story
