The first event in Millennium Year 2000 featured The Pedal Car Grand Prix - 7 home-made entries including a peddling bath tub complete with working shower!! This evolved into the Kit Car Grand Prix. 2. Uckfield FM was born from the 2002 Big Day. 3.Over 500 schoolchildren were involved in The Ghana project (2003-2005). A riot of African music and colour. Uckfield residents took part in many different processions including Notting Hill and the Thames festival. 4.The Big Day Parade. Local primary schools, Spiritus, the stilt walkers , the drumming band all became involved. Summer in Uckfield has never been the same since. 5.No Fit State circus - was much loved “It made me want to run away with them!” said a nostalgic committee member. But it was also wonderful to be able to use their big top for other events and it provided an exciting focal point. 6.In 2006 the Festival teamed up with local artists to offer Open Houses, exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops. Out of this grew the Art Trail and then Bridge Arts. 7. The Festival Club has provided a constant source of new talent and free entertainment including in 2007 the appearance of a young man from Uckfield called Rory Graham - now known as Rag’n’Bone Man. 8.Dance Explosion - 2008 brought a wonderful opportunity for everyone in Uckfield to get involved in dance, movement and mime with professional help. “Strictly”came early to Uckfield! 9.Last Night of the Proms. Uckfield Concert Brass, Mid Sussex Sinfonia, Imperial Male Voice Choir and wonderful soloists were all involved in this Festival favourite - and in 2011 there was a performance of the 1812 overture in the Luxford Field complete with fireworks. It will happen again this year. 10.Brian Phillips’ historic walks. Over the years have trodden every corner of the countryside around Uckfield and he has shared with his enthusiastic fellow walkers his encyclopaedic knowledge of local history 11. Uckfield Music Club have collaborated with the Festival to offer access to the very best national and international classical music performers in the lovely setting st Margarets Church in Buxted Park. 12. In 2011 an 'Awards for All' grant meant that Same Sky were able to assemble all the children’s creations from the daytime parade into the amazing Uckfield Oak an illuminated sculpture on Luxford Field in the evening. 13. In2012 the Olympic Torch was moving from Crowborough to Lewes but not coming through Uckfield so we organised our own Torch Run which involved Uckfield College and Uckfield’s six primary schools. The torch was designed by students at Uckfield College. Every school brought their pupils to watch and children lined the whole route. 14. Continental visits from our twin towns included the fabulous Greenhorns Jazz band from Quickborn in Germany, in 2014, French markets and distinguished medieval music group from Arques -la- Bataille.
STIVALS familymatters 15. Mark Steel’s In Town in Uckfield. In 2015 the BBC Radio 4 star gave a hilarious one man show analysing the foibles of our little town! 16. Classic Cars first took part in the Uckfield Festival in 2016 Now there is a whole day of classic and historic cars and bikes and music. 17. In 2017 'Our June’s Wedding' in Buxted. This wonderful drama, just one of the many community dramas in the Festival over the years shows the involvement of outlying villages with the Festival. © RON HILL 18. Celebrate Youth. This event on July 11th reminds us of the vital contribution that young people of Uckfield have made - Summer Vibes, Battle of the Bands, Teen Spirit, Uckfield's Got Talent and so many youth drama events. 19. Blues and Roots is an extension of the Uckfield Festival! Graham Pope and Graham Smith's knowledge of the local music scene has produced some memorable gigs in the Festival. Blues and Roots Festival is now firmly established in its own right as a much valued feast of earthy music for our many local Blues lovers . © RON HILL 20. Kites! Every year has brought new innovations and in 2019 for the first time we are introducing a Family Kite Day on Saturday 13 July BONUS! The committee 2000-2019! Without this small dedicated group of volunteers the Festival would never happen. They start in September and work throughout the year to get the week’s events together.
