U C UCKFIELD & DISTRICT CHAMBER of COMMERCE photo: Matt Harquail TIME TO REMEMBER & TIME TO LOOK Uckfield remembers that it was 20 years ago when Festival first began as we approached the momentous date that was 31 December 1999… And 50 years ago, man first walked on the moon without much activity since… And recently, who can’t have failed to have been touched by the 75th anniversary of D-day. We have been trying to ascertain the start date of your town’s chamber of commerce; we know that it goes back as far as 1932, as we do have photographic evidence of a Christmas dinner of that year! If anyone knows of evidence earlier than this date, we’d love to hear from you. We can’t be too far off celebrating a Centenary. Of course, change is important in any organisation, as we progress and respond to current and future needs. Recently, I attended an event organised by SELEP (our local enterprise partnership) looking at the matter of their Digital Skills Partnership and how it will enhance the economy and quality of life in the South East. Quite alarmingly, the message is that even if every school / college leaver achieves their potential, there will still be huge skill gaps in the digital workspace, which means that the likes of you and I will need to upskill or re-skill. At our next meeting on Wednesday 10 July, we will host speakers from ESCC, who will share some of their innovative schemes to help support the Government’s desire to increase the level of careers input for today’s young people. Finally, in the last month we have introduced a Gallery section (via the Events tab) to our website, of previous events – see if you can spot yourself or maybe see what you’ve been missing out on!
