MORE RESIDENTS MAKE ENERGY
SAVINGS THROUGH THE BIG WEALDEN
SWITCH
There has been a sharp increase in the number
of Wealden residents benefiting from cheaper
household energy bills by taking part the Big
Wealden Switch.
Nearly 1,000 residents saved more than £200,000
on their household energy bills during two
collective switching campaigns run by Wealden
District Council this year.
This year’s overall average saving was £228.
You can register your interest in taking part in the
next Big Wealden Switch energy auction at the
Wealden web site. You will need to have recent
household energy bill to hand. Following collective
switching auctions, people who signed up for the
Big Wealden Switch receive a letter offering them a
new tariff. They are under no obligation to accept
but it may represent a considerable saving on their
existing contract. There are no obligations and no
fees involved.
to be true? It’s not. Call 01424 722309 or visit
UCKFIELD ROTARY
A TALE OF TWO CLIVES
BRIGHTER
HELPING MAKE
BRIGHTER
Taking a break from our busy July, we enjoyed a lovely Sunday
afternoon to celebrate Clive Critchley and Clive Cooper, who
each joined our club more than 40 years ago.
President Charles House reminded
members and guests of events
in which the two Clives had been
prominent. He noted, in particular,
a Ladies’ Night at which the afterdinner
speaker had been Dame
Thora Hird, when even the hotel
staff had crept into the room to
hear her recount stories of her
career.
Both Clives have served as
President at least once. Clive
Cooper recalled a highly profitable
Jazz Evening held some years ago
as well as a Golf Day organised
on behalf of Macmillan Cancer
Support, while Clive Critchley’s chief
memory was of the trees planted
by the Rotary Club in Luxford Field,
funded by an appeal held while he
was Club President. He was also
influential in 1980 in the provision
of the town clock, which is shortly
to be replaced. Both Clives are
still actively involved in various
organisations in the town, and we
look forward to their continuing
contributions to Rotary and to the
community in coming years.
This tea party was held at
Crockstead Equestrian Centre,
which is our new headquarters.
After many happy years of meeting
at the Forge, Halland, we moved to
Crockstead in July, and have been
made very welcome.
Our programme of community and
fund-raising events is being put
together, and we will let you have
details of these shortly. The fundraising
will boost our Charity Fund,
from which we meet requests for
support from the local community.
If you know of a local good cause
that could
benefit from
Rotary Club
support, please
let us know,
contact details
set out below.
BUSINESS NETWORKING EXPO 2017
THURSDAY 13TH JULY, 10AM - 3PM
BU volunteers have continued to be
busy collecting litter in the town centre
and in many streets in Ridgewood.
They were also active at the Weald On
The Field event on 5 August.
The Project Group of volunteers
answered a request for help to
clear undergrowth and bushes
along Browns Lane where they were
growing across the pavement, making
it difficult for pedestrians to use the
footpath.
BU’s Annual Garden Competition was
a great success. Section winners - and
there were many - received their
award on 15 July. BU handed over
some shiny, new cups which had been
donated by the town’s Chamber of
Commerce. Thank You
We would like to say a BIG THANK
YOU to:
UCKFIELD LIONS
14TH CLASSIC CAR RUN 2017
Now in its 14th year, the date for the 2017 Lions Annual
Classic car run - Sunday 24 September - is fast approaching.
The event will again be on the last Sunday in September - 24th - and
follows a similar format to the proceeding years.
The cars will assemble at The Halfway House Pub, Isfield for coffee and
biscuits from 10am and then set off on a scenic run through Sussex.
Having completed the route they will assemble back at the pub to
display the vehicles and enable the drivers and passengers to partake
of the pig roast lunch prepared by the Lions or refreshments from the
pub.
at Boots Corner and various other
areas in Uckfield;
To the Rotarians of Uckfield for
making the railway station area
very colourful;
To the various pubs and
businesses, local residents who
have clubbed together, and
individuals, who have provided
floral displays. Brighter Uckfield
provided the displays under the
Uckfield entrance signs and have
assisted in ongoing maintenance
of other floral areas. We are proud
to be part of Uckfield’s community
effort in making Uckfield a very
attractive town this summer.
Lion Chris Macve said “The charity chosen by the Lions this year
to benefit from the funds raised will be Canine Partners who are
Sussex based and provide trained dogs to assist people with complex
disabilities such as cerebral palsy,
muscular dystrophy, MS, spinal
injuries and injured personnel
from the armed forces. We just
hope for fine weather to assist
this spectacular day”.
OWLSBURY PARK
ON UCKFIELD’S DOORSTEP
Work has begun on Owlsbury Park at Little Horsted. The 74 acre site looks across the
valley to Uckfield, but extensive landscaping and planting scheduled will hide the
nearby A22 and the surrounding area will become a flower meadow.
The park will provide a new recreation area and will
take pressure off Ashdown Forest as its lowland
heathland ecology is being threatened by nitrogen
deposition from vehicle exhaust fumes and a high
amount of recreational use.
Planting has already been completed on two
orchards, one which features more traditional
varieties including plums, cherries walnuts and
quince. The second orchard, in the north of the
park, includes modern varieties. As the fruit trees
mature, the apples can be used both for fruit and
pressing for juice.
Many of the existing features including a number
of farm ponds are being restored to provide a
reservoir of wildlife.
There will be a car park off Horsted Pond Road
but the main access will be via a footpath running
under the A22 linking to Uckfield via the Ridgewood
estate, with other footpaths providing links to Little
Horsted and Piltdown.
A CELEBRATION OF VOLUNTEERS
The Uckfield Volunteer Centre is hosting a very special event on 16
September for everyone who lives in and around Uckfield. We are
celebrating volunteering and want to show you how a small offer
can make a BIG difference!
14.2 million people in the UK regularly volunteer
once a month in the UK. Why not be one of them!
The largest age group volunteering is now the under
25’s -not what you thought? ‘Helping out’ is proven to
be good for your health, can help build your CV, can
build your confidence and teach you new skills as well
as passing on your own skills to someone who really
needs them.
Please come along and celebrate with us. We will
have lots of interactive activities for all the family from
making Tudor cakes to trying out the latest high-tech
wheelchair. We are also delighted to announce we
have Lembit Opik from BBC Radio coming to open our
special event too.
We also have lots of local organisations who will be
on hand to talk about and show you what they do.
Uckfield FM will be broadcasting live on Facebook and
much much more.
There will be free refreshments and a free prize draw.
So, what’s stopping you? Come and join in the FUN.
Contact the Uckfield Volunteer Centre for more details
OUT AND ABOUT
LOVING LIFE IN SUSSEX
by Zoe Holland
Zoe is a Mum, Step Mum, Teacher
and Local Explorer. She shares her
adventures around Sussex with her
family on her blog jugglingonrollerskates.
com which features local days out, places
to stay and local events.
Wow! Where did the Summer go!? One minute we’re in the throes of enjoying lazy school holidays..
then boom...the mornings are crisp, the leaves start changing colour and the children are a year
further in their school careers.
We’ve had a busy few weeks enjoying days out come
rain or shine. I always feel so lucky to live in this part
of the country at this time of year. We are surrounded
by rolling countryside including the South Downs and
Ashdown Forest for Summer walks and picnics. We
have the beaches and cliffs down on the coast....and
then there’s the vibrant seaside towns of Brighton and
Eastbourne.
Over the past few weeks our adventures have taken
us to Bedgebury Pinetum on a Gruffalo hunt, Bewl
Water to paddle in the pretty reservoir, we’ve enjoyed
sunset beach sessions on Brighton beach and rainy
puddle walks across the Ashdown Forest. We’ve also
visited fantastic local events such as the Ringmer Steam
Fair and the Byline Festival at Pippingford. Best of all
we’ve stayed at some fantastic local camping spots like
Embers at Bentley and Wowo near Sheffield Park....
where we spent the night in a yurt! It’s certainly been a
fun packed Summer and there always seems to be so
much going on in and around Uckfield!
As we welcome September and prepare to embark on a
new school year there’s a real sense of change and new
beginnings. It’s a hugely exciting time with the chaos
of new schedules, routines, class mates and teachers.
September’s also the month where we get to relish
the last few days of tee shirt weather before the coats
and boots come out for the rest of the year. Despite
being the tail end of Summer there are still some great
outdoor events taking place locally too.
Into the Trees takes place over the weekend of the 9th
and 10th of September in Pippingford Park near Nutley.
The event is organised by the same team behind the
hugely popular Elderflower Fields festival and promises
to offer a similar range of outdoor and nature based
play opportunities for families.
Then on the 16th and 17th The Bentley Estate put
on their annual Woodfair. The event is the place to
celebrate anything wood related… craft, forestry,
chainsaw sculpting, trug making, forest education,
music, food..the list is endless and is a fantastic family
day out.
So yes..the days may be getting shorter and the
mornings certainly fresher...but at the same time we
embrace a new season, a new school year and best of
all new adventures!

DO WE KNOW WHAT RIGHTS WE HAVE AS CONSUMERS
The Consumer Contracts Regulations
have been in place for some time now
but do we know what rights we have as
consumers?
Nick Stockley is
Solicitor in Dawson
Hart’s Litigation
department
and specialises
in commercial
litigation and
mediation
Suppliers of goods and services are now
obliged to give consumers information
relating to the description, the price, the
right to cancel, seller information and
compatibility of digital content.
Your right to cancel an order for goods
now ends a minimum of 14 days from
the day you receive your goods. You
now have 14 days to decide whether to
cancel then a further 14 days to send
the goods back. You should get a refund
within 14 days of returning the goods.
The trader also has to refund the basic
delivery cost of getting the goods to
you in the first place. Exemptions to
these regulations include, CDs, DVDs or
software if the seal is broken, perishable,
bespoke or personalised items.
The seller must deliver goods not more
than 30 days from the date of the
order. The seller is responsible for the
condition of the goods until they are
received by the consumer.
If you order a service, you have 14
days from entering into the contract
to cancel it. If you have asked that the
service starts straightaway you will still
be able to cancel, but you must pay
for the service that is provided up to
cancellation. Exemptions include hotel
bookings, flights, car hire, concerts and
other event tickets, or where the trader
is asked to carry out urgent repairs or
maintenance.
If you are “stuck” in a contract then we
can advise you on your rights.
THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING YOUR WILL UP TO DATE
Laura Manton is
a Director and
Wills, Probate,
Trusts & Tax
Planning.
A woman has been awarded a share in
a property after a long and upsetting
court battle.
Joy Williams, 69, had lived with her
partner Norman Martin in a property
they had owned as tenants in common
since 2009 until he suffered a heart
attack in 2012. The couple were
unmarried and he was still legally
married to his wife Mrs Martin when he
passed away.
As Mr Martin had failed to either
update his Will or divorce, his share of
the £320,000 property passed to his
estranged wife, 73 year old Maureen
Martin.
Ms Williams wanted Mr Martin’s share of
the property to be transferred to her in
order to give her some financial security
as she had had no means of support
herself after the death of her partner.
Speaking after the hearing Ms Williams
said “What has been traumatic for me
is that this level of serious relationship
is not currently recognised by the law
and I therefore had to bring this claim
in court to achieve some security and
to obtain this result. I hope my situation
raises awareness for others to consider
their own financial position in relation
to their partner and consider whether
they need to take advice to protect each
other in future.”
Laura Manton, Director at Dawson
Hart Solicitors says “I advise everyone
to ensure that they have done all they
can to protect their family by having a
properly drawn up Will. Please contact
us without delay to make sure you have.”
THE MANY
VESSELED WOMEN
LOCAL PAINTER TURNS TO POTTERY
Philomena Harmsworth, a painter of twenty years
has moved to East Sussex and discovered pottery.
She says that last year the paintings were literally
starting to leave the surface of the canvas and that
after a short pottery course realised, with utter
delight, that so many of the paintings were actually
supposed to have been pots all along! This is an
interesting concept as Philomena makes pots that
are also supposed to be paintings!
Now ensconced in a project coined the Many
Vesseled Women, literally female figurines made
up of domestic vessels – traditionally hand-thrown
bowls, vases. The compilations are then sketched
upon, often directly from life giving it that immediate
freshness of first hand insight. They have a
dichotomy of traditionally produced domestic ware
with a surreal decorative element. Philomena calls
these 3D paintings.
A collector of Philomena’s work says her paintings
translate effortlessly into ceramics. You will be able
to see weird and wonderful ceramics alongside the
paintings they have sprung from. There will also
be usable bowls mugs and jugs for sale. As an ‘old
school artist’, Philomena grew up with the love of
craft, drawing all the time, so there are still livesgarden
fruit and veg painted directly into bowls with
the signature sense of humour- fruit in bowls painted
onto bowls.
‘My wish is for people to live with live art: real things
nourish and enhance one’s day. Living with handmade
art, no machine or device can replicate. Real
things give us a sense that an exchange has taken
place, that sensation arises from a stimulated mind.’
Philomena has been raising funds for the East
Sussex Foster Carers Association by taking part in
Lewes Artwave this September.
SUNDAY’S ARE FOR
SUPPORTING THE
SUSSEX HORSE RESCUE
Sussex Horse Rescue
Trust was established over
50 years ago to rescue,
rehabilitate and loan where
possible, horses, ponies,
and donkeys that have
suffered horrendous cruelty
and neglect. The staff and
volunteers work tirelessly to
ensure a happy and healthy
life for all equines that come
into the sanctuary. It costs over £220,000 each year
to keep the sanctuary running, so the support of the
general public is fundamental in enabling the sanctuary
to keep running and fulfilling their belief that every
equine has a right to a loving home free from cruelty and
neglect.
When the sanctuary is open to the public, you can meet
the sponsored horses, ponies, and donkeys on the yard,
take out a sponsorship, make a donation, browse the
Barn Shop, enjoy a lovely cuppa in the tearoom, pony
rides for the kids, enjoy our field walk to see the horses,
and meet Brolly the Umbrella Cockatoo. At the annual
Gala Closing Day on Sunday 10th September there will
be stalls, entertainment, a parade of sponsored horses,
facepainting and much more! For the more horsey
minded, the annual Tack Sale is held the following
SEPTEMBER, HARVEST & HOME
September is the month of harvest and home. So many people herald it as one if their favourites with its high blue
skies, torn white clouds and a new richness to the light. The last grain crops are being brought in, berries are ripening
in the hedgerows, the English apple harvest is in full swing. September is back to school time, back to work, it is off to
Uni time, autumn wardrobe time, fattening pumpkins, time for fledglings to fly.
Whilst the beginning of the month is
often still blessed with the final treats
of summertime - bright mornings and
warm afternoons, the evenings are
closing in, the dew is heavier, and by
the end of the month everything is
tinged with autumn. Whilst it can be
a time of loss, with summer ending,
and winter on the way, it can also a
positive time as well. As a water-shed
between the light bright months past
and the darker ones ahead, September
is a good time to reap the rewards of
the year’s work, reflect on successes
and failures and to make plans for the
future.
Monty Don sums up the paradoxes of
September beautifully in his book Fork
to Fork - “It is the month of harvest but
the start of next year’s planning and
cultivation as well…No other month
has such a rich and rounded light or
such a tangible sense of preciousness.”
Being the product of the year passed,
and the seed-bed for the year to
come, September is a time of balance,
epitomised at the equinox on 22nd
September, when day and night are
equal length.
This time of balance - of light and dark,
inner and outer, harvest and loss - can
offer us an opportunity to recalibrate
ourselves and our lives. It is a good
time to look at our work / life balance,
to hone our ability to rest as well as to
be active, and it is also a fabulous time
to get creative. With food for free in
the hedgerows, and an excess produce
in many kitchen gardens, it is a good
time to make jams and chutneys or to
start planning creative projects to fill
the lengthening evenings. Nurturing
in themselves, creative tasks can give
enormous personal satisfaction and
with careful planning and application
can make meaningful gifts.
The idea of harvest and planning may
have its roots in the gardening and
agricultural world, but they can also
be applied to our work and domestic
lives as well. September is the time
of repair, renewal and prepare. It is
a great time to clear out the gutters,
get those jobs ticked off the DIY list at
last and get ready to baton down the
hatches. On the domestic level the
theme is de-cluttering and generally
refreshing our homes and our ideas.
Sifting through the cupboards, under
the beds, giving things away clearing
space are all worthwhile tasks at this
time of year which help us to create
a safe, clear space, and an underlying
order, within which we will be better
able to rest over the winter months.
Another favourite book of mine is The
Rules of Life by Richard Templar. In it
he writes that “Clutter overwhelms you
emotionally and gets more and more
cobwebby”. He suggests that “Pruning
your stuff gives you a chance to get
rid of anything that is useless, broken,
out of date, un-cool, un-cleanable,
redundant and ugly….. Having a good
clear-out refreshes you, revitalizes
you, makes you conscious of what
you are collecting.”. His words bring to
mind the famous early 20th Century
designer William Morris, who wisely
advised - “Have nothing in your house
that you do not know to be useful, or
believe to be beautiful.”
If the end of summer brings a sense of
foreboding spend some time planning
your autumn and winter, deliberately
scheduling in time, like the earth, to
rest and renew. It is a great time to
value your indoors and your inner
world, to re-ignite a creative hobby, to
buy yourself an inspirational book, to
book a regular massage.
If this time of year seems daunting,
spare a thought for the swallows. I
have watched two clutches being loving
reared this summer. The latest are still
tiny hatchlings with wide yellow beaks
being loyally stuffed by their tireless
parents. The pressure is on. These
fledglings must be fed up, flight-fluent
and ready, by the end of the month for
their 4,000 mile journey to Africa. The
smallest of our clutch will only be two
months old when the time comes, one
September afternoon, for them to line
up on the telephone wire and launch
themselves into flight. If fragile birds
with brand new wings can fly 4,000
miles we can survive winter, surely, and
with a little preparation in the glorious
month of September, we might even
enjoy it!
Is your weight
affecting your
health?
Hands up all those who feel they’re in
a constant battle to achieve a healthy
and sustainable body weight. How
many diets have you tried and failed,
feeling totally frustrated and not
knowing what to do next?
Rachel Ricketts, Weight Loss Consultant
Special offers for September
Having had a weight problem for 35 years, Rachel was desperate
to find a way of being able to lose weight once and for all. ‘I had
just about resigned myself to the fact that I would be overweight
for the rest of my life, when I came across the principles of the
Metabolic Weight Loss Programme. I followed these and to my
amazement, I lost 3 stone in just over 3 months and then went on
to successfully maintain my weight. The relief was enormous to
have found something that finally worked for me.’
‘This isn’t an open-ended slimming club,’ says Rachel. ‘We set your
target weight at the beginning and then get on with the business
of helping you lose the weight, addressing any difficulties along the
way, then we concentrate on keeping it off – for good!’
For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support
service is provided throughout the UK - distance is no object!
Rachel became passionate
about wanting to help as many
people as possible with their
weight problems, which led her
to become a qualified weight
loss consultant. In the last 14
years, she has helped over
5,000 clients from all walks of
life to help bring their dieting
days to an end once and for all.
‘My clients’ ages range from 8
years to 89 years old, so there is
hope for everyone!’
With an average weight loss
of 7-14lb a month for clients
and hundreds of hand written
testimonials, Rachel’s results
speak for themselves
Clients often comment on how
impressed their doctors are
with their results. ‘My doctor is
very happy– I’ve been able to
come off blood pressure and
cholesterol medication,’ says
one. Another doctor said, ‘All
my lady patients on thyroid
medication are struggling to
lose weight, but you’ve lost 2 ½
stone despite being on thyroxin
– well done!’
One of the popular aspects of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme
is there’s nothing faddish about it. There are no meal replacements,
diet shakes or diet pills. All the foods on the programme are easily
obtainable. Clients frequently say just how easy it is to follow, they
don’t feel hungry and are not having to constantly battle with
cravings. The four stages of the programme are tailored as necessary
to provide the maximum results for each client.
Rachel and her team give weekly one-to-one consultations, guiding
you through the programme with personalised support, lots of
empathy and total conviction in the success of the programme.
Email support is available in between consultations.
With an average weight loss of 7-14lb a month for clients and
hundreds of hand written testimonials, Rachel’s results speak for
themselves. ‘I see real results daily, time after time I see people’s
lives change in front of me.’
Rachel offers free consultations for those who are
wanting to lose their weight once and for all.
THE UCKFIELD VOICE
It was my great pleasure to officially open ‘Weald
on the Field’ on Saturday 5th August – a fantastic
one day festival that celebrated good food, drink
and music. Families flocked to Luxford Field
to enjoy the event and there was something for
everyone including children’s activities. There
was an excellent line up of bands appearing on
the Bullet Stage. The showers failed to dampen
spirits and the sun and smiles shone through.
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
by Cllr. Louise Eastwood
Ron Hill Photographic
The event was organised by Uckfield Town
Council’s ‘Celebrate Uckfield’ group along with
local company ‘Food Rocks’, Wealden District
Council and the Uckfield Chamber of Commerce
with support from Uckfield FM and the Tesco
Bags of Help scheme. Let’s hope that this
becomes an annual event!
At the time of writing we are looking forward to
the Uckfield Carnival. This year is extra special
as the society are celebrating 190 years since
the first carnival was organised. That’s 190
years of bringing the community together, raising
money for good causes and putting on this
fantastic event. A big thank you to the Uckfield
Bonfire and Carnival Society for all their hard
work through the year.
I would like to thank the members of the public
who attended the Town Council’s planning
committee meeting and spoke about the
Ridgewood development. We, at the Town
Council, are here to listen to your views and take
them forward on your behalf. Committee meeting
dates and agendas are published on our website
and you are welcome to attend.
We have a hard-working team at the Civic Centre
that has just seen some changes. We have said
goodbye to a long serving staff member Susan
Allum and we wish her all the best for the future.
We welcome to the team David Nott, our new
Hospitality Manager and Richard Lee, our new
Facilities Manager.
And finally, Uckfield Town Council are pleased to
have contributed to the very smart replacement
clock in the High Street. Isn’t it great to have a
working clock again? On that note, it’s time for
me to wind up!
THE TOWN’S ALLOTMENTS –
A GROWING PASTIME!
by Cllr. Mick Dean
We are so lucky in Uckfield to have such a large number
of allotments provided by the Town Council for the
pleasure of so many keen gardeners. The magnificent
range of vegetables and soft fruits that are grown is
most impressive. The allotment holders certainly put in
a great deal of hard work to produce such strong and
healthy crops.
It can be very useful to bring together people with the
same passion and shared interest in a particular subject,
the allotments. It is their chance to share ideas and
make suggestions for how they see their continued
enjoyment and growth and residents’ involvement.
To do this the Town Council is holding a conference
event in September, to which allotment holders and
all residents are invited. The details are shown below.
Ron Hill Photographic
Having such a get-together is really useful, as there are
things to be discussed.
One of these is about the annual allotment competition.
To be commented on is; should we have such an annual
competition, if so, what should it be like and who would
organise and run it?
Your ideas and suggestions on this, and any other
matters concerning the allotments, are really needed and
welcomed. In so many different ways the future strength
and growth of our allotments is ‘in your hands.’
Ron Hill Photographic
Please come along to the conference and in the
meantime “Keep on digging.”
UCKFIELD REVIVAL –
SATURDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2017
by Cllr. Chris Macve
Over a year ago we were eagerly awaiting the
reinstatement of two-way traffic flow returning to our
High Street. To mark the occasion we held a parade
of classic, historic and interesting vehicles driving
both ways in the High Street, which were then shown
on Luxford Field.
This proved to be very popular and it was suggested
we repeat the event.
So this year on Saturday 7th October 2017 we will
commence with the vehicles assembling at the
Highlands Inn at 10.00am for refreshments. They
will then proceed through the town and up the
High Street before parking in Luxford Field for an
interesting display.
We do hope you will enjoy the show and that the
weather stays kind to present these vehicles in their
full splendour!
THE UCKFIELD VOICE SEPTEMBER 2017
LAST MONTH IN YOUR COUNCIL
A public exhibition was held at the beginning of July
for residents near to Hughes Way Play area to view
the proposed designs from six companies. The
Environment and Leisure Committee reviewed the
feedback received from the public at their meeting in
July. Members felt the design by HAGS-SMP was the
most impressive and met the needs of the residents
and community. An update would now be circulated to
residents in the neighbouring roads, and contact made
with the play area company to start planning the finer
details of the installation and proposed timescales for
the works to take place.
housing supply and demand in Wealden District.
Members raised their concerns however, on the lack
of affordable housing in the Uckfield area and within
the new developments coming forward. Many young
people were now being priced out of the market and
finding it difficult to stay in the town. The Town Clerk
planned to feed these comments back to Wealden
District Council for consideration.
The Road Safety Working Group were commended on
the fantastic day organised in June which saw pupils
from 11 primary schools take part in an interactive
day with agencies such as East Sussex Highways,
Southern Rail and East Fire & Rescue to learn about
safety on our roads. The date has been set for next
year as 20th June 2018 and contact will be made with
schools in the next few weeks.
At Full Council, members received an update on the
progress being made towards the Town Council’s
annual priorities for 2017-18. They also reviewed
Wealden District Council’s draft Housing Strategy
2017-20 which they agreed was well written; it
highlights the current circumstances affecting
Further to last month’s article regarding Open Spaces we wish to clarify that the Millennium Green is managed
by a charitable trust which is responsible for its ownership and upkeep.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
Agendas are posted on the Town Council website
www.uckfieldtc.gov.uk in PDF format, and are also
posted on notice boards throughout the Town. Full
Council agendas and minutes can also be seen at the
Uckfield Library.
Meetings are held in the Council Chamber on the first
floor of The Civic Centre, Uckfield and start at 7.00pm
(unless otherwise stated). If you wish to ask a question
at a meeting, on items on the agenda, it is advisable
to submit your question beforehand to allow a full
response to be given at the meeting. All questions
should be directed to the Town Clerk. Please email
UCKFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
GETTING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS
OFF THE GROUND
Uckfield has a thriving business community; large employers, such as Rix and Kay, TR Fastenings
and Dawson Hart are often the names that come to mind when you think of business in
the town, but the landscape is made much more colourful and interesting thanks to the large
number of small businesses, sole traders and entrepreneurs that we have within our community.
Uckfield seems to be a town where people feel safe to ‘give it a go’, and customers and clients
like something new and interesting, and like to try it out. So, if you’ve got the right business idea,
Uckfield is the perfect town to get started in!
It starts with a plan…
It might seem simple, but many businesses simply
get up and running after a brainwave, an idea – but
to make your business work, you need a business
plan. And not just in the beginning – you need to
keep revising your plan, updating it regularly and
checking progress against what you said you’d do in
the first place - and haven’t strayed away from your
great idea!
Chris, Dowling, of Dowling Consultants in Uckfield
says: “A well written business plan is your key to
success. Statistics tell us that the first year of any new
business is the most difficult – a well written plan
which is reviewed frequently is a valuable business
tool. Clear ideas and a clear direction for the first
year of trading are vital – you will need to ask yourself
things like ‘Are the margins OK?’ ‘Are the overheads
too high?’ and, maybe most importantly, ‘Are you
making a profit?’”
Support available for new business
The Start–Up Loan Scheme is backed and funded
by the government to help business start-ups get
up and running ; this could be just what you need if
you’re running a start-up and need business support.
UCKFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATE - SEPTMEBER 2017
deliver the Start-Up Loan Scheme. He says: “The
scheme provides an unsecured personal loan of up
to £25,000, with the average being £7,000, and can
be paid back over a period of up to 5 years. To be
eligible, you must be in the process of starting up a
business or be in the first two years of trading. You
will be provided with support by an experienced business
adviser, who will help you with your business
plan and cash flow forecast.”
Unravelling the mysteries of grants and funding
An addition to the Start-Up Loan Scheme, there
are often over 3,000 grant schemes running for UK
start-ups at any one time. Knowing what’s available,
what’s applicable to your type of business and how
to go about accessing it can be a minefield. There are
UK government grants; EU grants (still available until
the UK leaves the EU); and local authority business
grants, which exist to support and encourage local
enterprise (find out more by looking up Local Enterprise
Partnerships and Regional Growth Fund) .
Chris says: “There are always new grants coming
onto the scene. For example, SME manufacturers
have been able, since July, to apply for up to £3500
of funding via the Manufacturing Growth Programme
(http://www.manufacturinggrowthprogramme.co.uk/)
There are also grants available under a ‘low carbon’
scheme – LoCASE – with up to £5,000 of funding
towards energy efficiency measures installed for a
business. Or, for suppliers of low carbon goods and
services, a business development grant of up to
£10,000 can be applied for.”
Up Loan Scheme and other help available can benefit
your business, contact Chris today – phone 01825
WEALD ON THE
FIELD 2017
Uckfield hosted the fantastic ‘Weald on the Field’ on
Saturday 5 August – a day festival celebrating good food,
drink and music. In the region of 2,000 people flocked
to Luxford Field on Saturday to enjoy the stalls which
were selling local produce, street food and drink. There
was something for all the family with a great collection of
children’s activities.
The attractive Bulletstage (built within an Airstream)
was centre stage for an excellent line up of music from
12noon to 8pm, with Swagger, John Crampton, Penny for
the Workhouse, Noble Jacks and Red Butler entertaining
the crowds. Despite a couple of showers, the British
attitude to weather shone through, and festival goers
held out until the headline act Red Butler stole the show
at the end of the day!
The event was organised by Food Rocks, Uckfield Town
Council and Wealden District Council, with support
from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, and Uckfield
Chamber of Commerce. It was a fantastic day, with a
great atmosphere and we hope we can bring this day to
Uckfield again next year!
ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
By Sarah Davey
Think back to January 1st. Did you make any resolutions? To shed 30lbs / pay off
the credit card / start your own business? How are you doing? Truth is few people
ever achieve their goals, but some do! How do they do this?
Set a time limit – “I want to set up my business in
two months.” Then write down every step you think of
you need to take to achieve it. Be thorough. Does two
months still seem reasonable? Would twelve months
be more realistic? The more you get into it and break
it down the more manageable the little steps will
seem and the more tangible the big goal.
Set micro goals - Each time you achieve a goal it
motivates you to achieve another. Now you’ve broken
your big goal into micro goals take the first one, set
a time limit and do it. If you want to lose weight the
first step might be to research different methods
(Weightwatchers / 5:2 / calorie counting etc.) and
choose one by Friday. When you’ve done that move
on to the next micro goal: you might book a health
check to ask about blood pressure / blood sugar
etc…so you have a starting point to work from and
compare with as you make progress.
Only set important goals - Any worthwhile goal
requires you to do things you would prefer not doing
(e.g. saying no to cream donut if you’re trying to shed
weight, or restrict your spending if you’re trying to cut
debt). If your goal is not your priority, you won’t do
what’s required to achieve it because the prize isn’t
important enough. You have to want it badly!
Identify the biggest obstacle – If there’s more
than one potential obstacle make a list. Work out
in advance how you will deal with them. Maybe you
want to reduce your debt but are scared to open
unpaid bills and see just how much you owe. Perhaps
enlist the help of a trusted friend or mentor to sit
with you and support you. Or maybe there is a local
free debt advice charity you could contact.
Ask, “Am I willing to do make sacrifices?” – Be
honest. If the answer is no you’re setting yourself up
for failure. Maybe now is not the right time for you.
Work your plan – Check in with your plan on a daily
basis and ask, ‘What am I going to do today to move
towards my goal? You’ll need resolve and discipline
because some days you won’t feel like doing it. If this
happens don’t beat yourself up, just get back on the
plan the next day.
Hold yourself accountable – This is the number
one key to success and it’s the one that trips most
people up. It’s your life and your goal. Hold yourself
accountable to working your plan, and refuse to
make excuses.
Enjoy the journey – Encourage yourself daily as
you might encourage your best friend. Congratulate
yourself when you do things that challenge you or
you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone. As you
reach each micro goal, reward yourself.
Remember success isn’t a destination; it’s a journey.
Happy travelling.
Sky High Trampoline & DMT Club, based at the Fun
Abounds Trampoline Centre in Uckfield, continues to go
from strength to strength with some brilliant recent results.
In the National Development Plan Finals held in Telford in
July, Daniel Bradford and Alex Oakley struck gold in their
categories, whilst Darcie Lacey and Katie Goldsmith each
won bronze medals.
Also in July, Erifilly Heonos returned from representing
Great Britain at the Scalabiscup in Portugal with an
amazing 4th place. In September, the Club looks forward
to the culmination of the competition year at the British
Championships at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Both
Daniel Bradford and Erifilly Heonos have qualified to
represent the Club, so we wish them both the very best of
success.
ACTIVE UCKFIELD
A DAY OF TWO HALVES
By Jeremy Hallett
Spirits were undampened by the rain at Uckfield’s
summer ‘Festival of sports’, with people trying their
hands (and feet) at a range of different activities.
It was all looking good. Representatives of Uckfield
Grasshoppers, Uckfield Rugby Club, LeTennis, Uckfield
Judo, England Stoolball and Uckfield Runners along with
Town Councillor Donna French with her target throwing
hosted challenges for all ages. The crowd was there
and we’d even got professional catering for them (our
thanks to Russell Catering for this support). Individuals
started having a go at the sports and The Highlands Inn
Team Challenge began. Then the rains came down. It
all stopped. After a while, I encouraged a mother and
son to head for the tennis as he was keen to try that.
The rain poured down! My apologies to the mum and
boy concerned – it really had looked like the rain had
stopped!
The Highlands Inn Challenge was won by Uckfield
Rugby Club members with Grasshoppers as runners up
showing that trying different “skills” is fun and any age
can do it!
So a good time was had by all the early attendees, but
for the first time our time was cut short by the British
summer. Should we go back to a bit earlier in the year?
We’re thinking of inviting fitness organisations in addition
to sports ones – what do you think?
If you want to find out when the next event is to be
please contact Jeremy at activeuckfield@gmail.com or if
you want to get involved in any sport as participant or
supporter, again contact
Jeremy and he’ll put you
in touch with the right
person.
Locally the chance to play
table tennis and 5 a-side
football were asked about
so if you’re interested in
either or can offer that
let me know and we’ll see
what can be put together.
Outside Uckfield it’s
been a good summer
for English women
footballers, and their
rugby team is working
its way along in the
World Cup as we go to
press – are more people
in Uckfield interested
in these as options are
available locally to play or
watch. If you want more
information again please
get in touch.
TOUGH START FOR AFC UCKFIELD TOWN
The fixtures computer was not too kind for AFC Uckfield
Town in their new campaign in the Premier Division of the
Southern Combination League, as it pitted Uckfield against
two of the title favourites in their opening matches. Despite
going down 2-1 to Three Bridges and 2-0 to Haywards Heath
(the latter’s second goal coming right at the end), Uckfield
put in creditable performances against tough opposition.
Photo: Richie Welch, AFC Uckfield Town captain (right), with Club mascot
Rebecca Sullivan, prior to kick-off of the FA Cup tie with Colliers Wood United.
Prior to the league campaign getting underway, Uckfield’s
hopes of a run in this season’s FA Cup came to an end at
the Extra Preliminary Round stage. A 92nd minute penalty
equaliser gave Colliers Wood United a 2-2 draw in the first
match, before Uckfield lost the replay at the Oaks 2-0.
With a number of 17 and 18 year olds featuring in the
starting eleven, and this season’s captain Richie Welch only
in his early twenties, there are signs that Anthony Storey’s
new youthful team is starting to gel. Uckfield will be hoping
that the pace and energy being shown by the younger
players will have an impact when they play the teams who
are around them in the league table.
Meanwhile, Uckfield got off the mark with their first win of
the season in fine style, coming back from 2-0 down to beat
Hassocks 4-2 in the Sussex RUR Charity Cup.
BUXTED PARK CRICKET WEEK
Sadly, rain severely disrupted most of the matches which
were planned for Buxted Park’s special Cricket Week at the
end of July to mark the Club’s 150th anniversary.
The highspot of the Week, a match against a Sussex
County eleven, was one of the games badly affected, with a
shortened match played in persistent drizzle. The Club was
however able to take the opportunity on the day to unveil
its new electronic scoreboard. There was also a Presidents’
dinner, which was attended by Rob Andrew, Chief Executive
of Sussex County Cricket Club.
UCKFIELD ANDERIDA STILL
EYEING PROMOTION
Uckfield Anderida remain on course for promotion, despite
a narrow defeat in their showdown match with fellow titlechasers
Iden. The highlight of last month was a crushing
197-run win over Newick’s second team, in which Ed Watson
scored 159.
At the time of going to press, Uckfield have two matches
remaining, both at the Victoria Ground, including a possible
final day decider against Lewes St Michaels.
Another showpiece match which did make a start, against an
MCC eleven, was also abandoned. But, the weather did allow
a number of enjoyable boys’ and girls’ matches to be played
during the Week, which demonstrated the thriving juniors
set-up at Buxted Park.
If you or your local sporting club would like to be featured in a future issue of Uckfield Matters, or on Uckfield
