Soul path journey
Maps for the journey
In every moment, there are cycles and spirals,
beginnings and endings. Throughout the day, we pay
little attention to the path of the sun, the shadows, and
the stars but they are a constant reminder of the ever
flowing, every changing pattern of life. Some cycles are
greater than a day - seasons change, the moon waxes
and wanes, and our own life unfolds before our eyes.
The natural patterns that happen around us are obvious
but our own journey through life is not charted, and nor
does it follow a linear, logical line. There are still cycles
that occur and once we recognise that there is a map,
albeit sometimes it's vague and dusty, we can
understand our beautiful, strange existence a little
better.
When you stop thinking linearly and look at life in cycles
and spirals, you can see that you are never on a single
journey but simultaneously on many journeys and each
one can be at different points of the journey map.
Hero's journey
One such map is the hero's journey. It's a monomyth by
American mythologist Joseph Campbell who suggests
that myths are all a variation on a single, great story.
The steps taken by the hero can be seen in ancient
mythologies as well as the plots behind some of
Hollywood's greatest blockbusters. The hero's journey is
not isolated to literature of the movies, it is also a map
that can be applied to our own lives. It charts the ups
and downs we face when we have an idea, flash of
inspiration, or calling to the end point of the journey
where we bring the 'elixir' home.
If you're not familiar with the hero's journey, the steps
are broken down into three acts (which makes things
Dare of Dreaming Page 5
super easy for novelists and screenwriters). The structure is:
Act 1: Departure
• The call to adventure
• Refusal of the call
• Supernatural aid
• Crossing the threshold
• Belly of the whale
Act 2: Initiation
Act 3:
• The road of trials
• The meeting with the goddess
• Woman as temptress
• Atonement with the father
• Apotheosis
• The ultimate boon
• Refusal of the return
• The magic flight
• Rescue from without
• The crossing of the return threshold
• Master of two worlds
• Freedom to live
Screenwriter Gordon Napier explains the hero's journey in relation to
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark:
Dare of Dreaming Page 6
Ordinary world: Indiana Jones is an archaeologist, adventurer and a
Professor.
Call to adventure: He’s contacted by Government Agents to retrieve the
Ark of the covenant. Hitler is also after it and he has a head start.
Refusal of the call: The refusal comes in the form of a warning by Brody.
Supernatural aid: Indy is an experienced hero, he doesn’t need a
mentor. His code of honour is his guide.
Belly of the whale: Rescuing Marion and fighting the Nazis for the first
time in her bar as it burns to the ground. Although he was nearly killed
at the start, this is his first taste of death on this adventure.
Crossing the threshold: Going to Egypt
The road of the trials: Indy teams up with Sallah and the Nazis come
after them. They abduct Marion and Indy thinks she’s killed.
Meeting with the goddess: It’s easy just to call Marion the Goddess as
she’s his love interest but I don’t think she really inspires him to be any
more heroic than he would be if she was in the story or not. Indy is more
dedicated to the noble aspirations of his profession.
Woman as temptress: When Indy finds Marion alive, his first thought is
to rescue her and get out of there. But he doesn’t do this because if he did
the Nazis would search for her and destroy any chance he has of
recovering the Ark. So he resists this temptation and leaves Marion tied
up so he can continue on the journey.
Apotheosis: Indy learns the secret location of the Well of souls and the
location of the Ark of the covenant. He’s gained a new level of
knowledge. A gift from the Gods
Atonement with the father: He has a fear of snakes; he must overcome
this fear in order to recover the Ark. Atonement often is a section where
the hero has to overcome fear.
Ultimate boon: Indy has recovered the Ark of the Covenant.
Dare of Dreaming Page 7
The magic flight: The chase sequence, which starts on horseback and
then trucks, then dragged behind the truck. He recovers the Ark but then
the Nazis capture the Ark again and Indy hitches a ride on the periscope
on the submarine.
Rescue from without: The Ark is opened and all the bad guys are killed.
Crossing of the return threshold: Back in America.
Master of two worlds: He’s defeated the Nazis, his nemesis and
recovered the Ark.
Freedom to live: He lost the Ark to his own government but he’s got the
girl.
I know that our everyday lives aren't quite as epic as Indy's but if you
look at the structure of the hero's journey, you'll find similarities to
quests you've embarked on (hopefully less thwart with danger and
Nazis).
The hero's journey has variations with some steps omitted and with
name changes.
Fool's journey
When we move into tarot, we find the Fool's Journey. This is the journey
we will follow at the Soul Path Journey programme.
The major arcana (the first 22 cards in a deck, numbered zero to twentyone)
tell a procession through life, situations or events. We experience a
growth cycle. The Fool begins the journey and along his or her path, she
encounters the remaining 21-cards of the major arcana. The sequence
ends with The World and The Fool begins her journey again.
Like the hero's journey, The Fool's journey can be used as a guideline to
map where you are on your own path. For example, you might be at the
initial stage of starting a business – nothing concrete but an idea
bubbling under the surface. In your love life, you might have just found
out your partner has been having an affair. You would identify with the
Fool and the Tower respectively.
Dare of Dreaming Page 8
You don't have to have knowledge or understanding of the tarot as we'll
look at the journey and the archetypes. However, if you have a tarot
deck then you will gain deeper understanding of your deck and yourself
in the process. I recommend a Rider Waite deck or a Rider Waite clone
if you want to use it in conjunction with the Soul Path Journey
programme.
Your 3G network
If you have followed my work at the Inner Goddess Circle, you will know
that in previous years, I have presented a different goddess for each
month. The Soul Path Journey deepens your connection to spirit but to
do that, you need to find your spiritual allies that walk by your side.
Your 3G network is discovered in the first 3-lessons through guided
meditation and you will find your guide (in whichever guise that comes
to you - human, animal, plant, other planetary etc.), your god, and your
goddess.
You will be able to build a deeper connection with your spiritual allies,
and you'll learn how to listen to them and work with them.
Connection
My own journey that started back in 2012, and after a few years of being
lost in the wilderness, has taken me back to the foundation of why I do
what I do. It's all about connection. As humans, we have a desire to
connect and I believe we have a duty to be of service (this is what makes
our time on earth meaningful).
The Soul Path Journey is an invitation to find connection to yourself,
your community, Mother Earth and your spirit.
Connection to self
You are the most important person in your world. Not many people
reflect on how amazing and beautiful they are because our modern world
discourages it. We all have to go through trials and tribulations in this
human experience but it makes us stronger, sharpens our character, and
opens our hearts. You deserve your compassion and understanding.
Dare of Dreaming Page 9
Connection to community
If we don't help one another our existence becomes shallow. We're wired
to belong to a tribe and reaching out to our community (whether that's in
person or online) gives us a sense of belonging. Also, if you commit to be
of service to a community, you are giving something back (which
ultimately means you are also receiving).
Connection to Mother Earth
We all have a responsibility to Mother Earth. Without her, we have
nothing but this knowledge seems to escape a large percentage of people.
By deepening your connection to Mother Earth, you'll be helping current
and future generations to continue experiencing this beautiful, abundant
planet we call home.
Connection to spirit
Walk your own spiritual path and commit to finding out more about
what spirituality means to you. Ask questions, explore, try new things
and connect in ways that are meaningful for you.
"Sometimes it's the journey that teaches you a
lot about the destination" ~ Drake
Dare of Dreaming Page 10
Dare of Dreaming
I wonder how many people are afraid of dreaming.
When we're kids, we are encouraged to think about the
future with adults bombarding us with: "so, what do you
want to be when you grow up?". I remember having
wonderful dreams when I was little. I wanted to be a
nurse so I could walk down corridors feeling important
(inspired by an annual I got my hands on featuring a
nurse). I then forgot about nursing because I loved
drawing much more than walking in corridors. I
designed shoes and then dresses and thought that I'd be
a fashion designer. These dreams of the future flowed
and morphed over the years, becoming far less soulful
and more practical as I approached those turbulent
teenage years.
When you reach adulthood, nobody bothers to ask you
what you want to be when you grow up anymore because
they figure you're an adult so you must have it covered.
They assume you know what you're doing and you know
what your dreams are. For most of us, we forget our
dreams and we settle for a life that revolves more around
what society and other people expect from us than what
is in our hearts. We don't dare to dream any more. We
don't ask ourselves what we want to be.
Do you know what you want to be?
The answer to this question doesn't come from pursuing
the answer. It's a bit like the Muses in that respect; if
you actively chase then you'll find the answer becoming
more elusive. It's through creating space to dream so
you can listen to your soul. It's easier to do when we're
young because we're just starting out on our journey
through life and there is more exploration and play. We
never lose the curiosity and sense that anything is
possible but we bury it deep because sensible, adult
values creep into our lives and slowly strangle our
dreams.
Dare of Dreaming Page 11
Be or do?
Who we are and what we do are, at least in the modern world, tied
together. The question of what do you want to be implies a career or job
rather than values you want to express. Once we start going to school,
our education is geared towards finding a job and becoming a tax-paying
member of society so it's no wonder we expect our jobs to fulfil our
dreams. There's nothing wrong than that because it's how most of us
know how to be of service and it's how we hope to find our soul path or
purpose.
But are you really what you do? If that identity was taken away from
you, who would you be? The labels we wear through our life help define
us but they are not who we are. Underneath, we are still that beautiful
bundle of amazing potential that can be anything we choose. It takes
great courage to peel back the layers so you can dream again.
Where will you be without dreaming?
A friend read out a poem about autumn at a croning ceremony and we
were all asked afterwards which part of the poem was most significant to
us. Not everyone made the connection that the poem was written about
the autumn of one's life and strictly not the season. What caught my
attention was the line that went something like 'now the days are
shortening'. Ouch! Whatever stage of life you may be in, your days are
shortening and who knows how many more you or I have?
As you take the next step on your Soul's Journey, isn't it wise to keep in
mind that the clock is ticking down and we have only a limited time to
fulfil what's in our hearts, spirits and souls on this earthy plane. Isn't it
better to dare to dream a better way of being than feel the touch of death
at your shoulder and know that there is still so much more that should
have been realised? As the late Wayne Dyer said: 'Don't die with the
music still in you'.
Creating space to dream
Dreaming happens in its own time, as you well know from your nighttime
visions, and while it can be encouraged, it can't be forced into being.
The first step to creating space to dream is to be open and to invite your
Dare of Dreaming Page 12
dreams to come to you. Then you have to listen to the wisdom that your
soul whispers to you. The hardest part is to ignore your ego and logical
mind that will, and they will, tell you that what you dream of being is
absurd, too difficult, impossible and a million other reasons why you're
losing the plot.
"The higher self is whispering to you softly in the
silence between your thoughts." ~ Deepak
Chopra
The invitation
Create a ritual to invite the wisdom of your higher self to enlighten you
within the month on what your soul truly desires to experience and
create. Make it as sacred as you wish – light candles, light incense – it is
holy communion. Make sure it at a time and place where you have a few
moments of quietness and say something along the lines of:
"Dear higher self, guide me within the next month to rediscover my
dreams, purpose and passion through life. Please steer me in a way I can
understand and that I'll notice. I am ready to take the next step along
my soul path."
The listening
It's the quiet voice inside that guides you to greatness and steers you on
your soul path. You may have vivid dreams (keep a dream journal) or
you might find synchronicities everywhere you look. Sometimes, you
will have a deep knowing and a sense of direction.
In whichever ways your higher self communicates, keep being open to
the wisdom and for greater information to be channelled to you.
The refusal
We are so reliant on our logical mind and ego that when we become open
to the intuitive, wild flow of life, we face resistance from ourselves. The
Dare of Dreaming Page 13
Dare of Dreaming is allowing all the possibilities of your being to sit
within your space and for your soul to guide you towards your dreams.
Resistance comes because the ego wants to keep you safe and that place
outside your current reality is taking a leap of faith. Who knows what
danger lurks? So your ego will try its best to keep you within your
existing boundaries.
While being very annoying, the refusals that come up can show areas
that need healing so pay attention to the doubts and resistance as much
as you do with the positive guidance.
What to do with the refusals? Work on them with energy therapy such
as EFT, place them in a Reiki box or seek evidence to the contrary (find
examples of how the refusal is just not true).
Direction of your dreaming
Throughout the Soul Path Journey programme, there are four areas for
you to focus on: self, community, Mother Earth and spirit.
These areas will help you transform and grow. Throughout the
programme, we'll come back to look at the direction and progress on
these areas
The Dare of Dreaming is an invitation to find out:
• Who you want to be for yourself
• Who you want to be to your community
• Who you want to be to Mother Earth
• Who you want to be to your spirit
As you take this part of your journey, make sure you record the wisdom
given to you by your higher self and the refusals that follow. You can use
the space below to keep track of what information is given to you and
how it manifests, along with worries or reasons why you're dreaming the
impossible.
Meeting The Fool
The first character we meet on
the Fool's Journey is The Fool.
The card is numbered zero and
that is important in itself
because it contains nothing
(and everything
simultaneously). The Fool is
pure potential and she (or he) is
ready to take a step into the
unknown for no other reason
that it feels good and adventure
is calling.
The Fool knows the importance of daring to dream
because it feels unnatural for her not to do so. She
hasn't reached a point in her journey yet where
disappointment, rejection or other people's opinions
have seeped into the subconscious. She's not weighted
down and she doesn't know what's possible or
impossible. The wonder of life hasn't left her and she's
ready to go where her spirit calls.
Her companion on the journey is a little dog who runs by
her heels. The dog is either playing along or trying to
warn its mistress that there is a cliff edge looming. The
Fool is oblivious because she's looking up and not really
paying much attention to what's going on beneath her.
Acting like a fool or being foolish isn't held in high
regard in our society but that wasn't always the case.
The court jester (some decks label The Fool as The
Jester) occupied a position in between sovereignty and
the people. The jester could get away with telling the
ruling class hard truths without fear of having his head
lobbed off as long as it was wrapped up in jest. If you
wanted to survive the harsh politics and petty squabbles
in the court, you'd need to be a wise jester.
A fool is often the hero in many fairy tales. There is a pattern of a king
having three sons with the youngest lacking the brains and looks
departments. When a quest presents itself, the elder sons fail and the
fool, the underdog, comes home victorious. Not seeing the world
through tainted eyes or thinking in the 'usual' pattern is a bonus and
eventually turns the fool into the hero.
The fool is the divine child within us all.
Embrace the energy of the The Fool by:
• Being curious
• Being playful
• Forgetting what you 'know' and exploring what feels good
• Connecting with your inner child
• Finding joy
• Gathering experiences
I must learn to love the fool in me - the one
who feels too much, talks too much, takes too
many chances, wins sometimes and loses often,
lacks self-control, loves and hates, hurts and
gets hurt, promises and breaks promises,
laughs and cries" ~ Theodore Isaac Rubin
Fool's journey soul writing
The Fool
"Fabulous, you're here. Ready for the adventure to
begin?" The Fool asks.
"Adventure?" you stutter. "I'm not sure I've packed the
right shoes for an adventure."
The Fool throws his head back and laughs. He's already
moving forward, the little dog running at his heels.
"Don't worry. I've packed enough for you," he shouts as
you struggle to catch up with him. You silently wish you
weren't wearing your not-very-sensible shoes.
How could he have packed for me?, you wonder after
noticing he carries only a teensy-tiny knapsack.
"Wait up!" you yell. "Where are we going?"
The Fool takes a step forward and turns his head to look
back at you.
"That is completely up to you."
_________________________________
The Fool chooses second by second to write his own
story. He's a blank page in perpetual forward motion.
Write about the journey you want to take in life,
what adventures you'd like along the way and
where your final destination might be.
Self care pack
Let's be honest: life is not going to go exactly to plan
during the course of the Soul Path Journey programme.
I hold the intention for you that it will be more amazing
than you can imagine but I'm also realistic that there will
be challenges along the way. That's life. It's the ebb and
flow.
The Fool carries with him a knapsack for his adventure.
We don't really know what's in it until we meet the next
character of the tarot major arcana: The Magician. So,
let's assume that the Fool is carrying a self-care pack for
her journey ahead – something she can return to when
times get a little difficult and she needs a pick-me-up.
Your challenge is to make your own self-care pack.
It doesn't have to be big or fancy, but it should contain
things that are meaningful to you and have a positive,
uplifting effect. It's your happy box.
What you need:
• A box
• Items that make you happy and are nonperishable
(or have a long shelf-life)
What to do:
Fill your box with things that make you happy and put it
somewhere safe (and by safe, I mean somewhere safe
and where you'll remember you put it).
Here are some suggestions for your self-care box:
• A love letter you to yourself
• Chocolate
Dare of Dreaming Page 24
• Speciality tea-bags
• A special essential oil blend
• Bath salts or bubble bath
• A favourite book
Quiet rebellion against the ordinary
"Behold, a sacred voice is calling you.
All over the sky a sacred voice is
calling you." ~ Black Elk
Joy: the greatest rebellion
The dare of dreaming requires you to get out of your
own way so your inner, divine child can look at the world
through fresh eyes.
I know it's difficult to do when the responsibilities of
adulating fall squarely on your shoulders but what if you
could be lighter? What if you could look at the world
through the eyes of a child? What if you chose to be
joyful no matter what?
Let's try this. Let's be the light in our own lives. Let's
shine for others. Let's choose joy.
A fool for a day
The energy of the Fool is about not being ordinary - it's
about shaking things up and doing things differently.
Embrace this energy by committing to spend at least one
day avoiding your normal routine. Here are some
suggestions:
• Take a different route to the office or shops
• Wear something daring
• Try something new on a menu
• Cook a meal from a recipe that you've never tried
before
• Talk to strangers
• Laugh more!
Tarot Spread
The divine child
The divine child reminds us to have innocence, wonder,
and openness to the full spiritual, emotional, and
physical aspects of life. It's easy to lose that connection
to the inner child but our lives would be richer if we
healed the hurts that stop us from embracing our divine
essence.
This tarot spread helps you to communicate to the
divine child archetype within.
Guided visualisation
Discover your spirit house & meet
your guide
If you take a look at The
Fool in tarot, you'll see
that most cards depict
the fool with a
companion dog.
Although our path is ours
alone to take, we do have
allies that walk alongside
us for all or part of our
journey.
As you take the Soul Path Journey, you will meet your
3G network: your spiritual allies that walk beside you for
this journey. The first ally you meet is your guide.
In this guided visualisation, you will also find your spirit
house. This is a safe place in meditation you can go back
to time and again. Your spirit house can be any type of
house or apartment - allow your imagination to create it.
In this meditation, I will take you to find this safe place.
You can download the Meet Your Guide mp3 through
this link.
There is no set form your guide should take. You might
meet an ancestor, a designated human spirit guide, an
animal, a being from a different realm or even a plant.
Listen to the mp3 with an open mind and know that
whoever, or whatever you meet, is exactly the guide you
need for this journey.
After you have listened to the guided visualisation,
record details of your spirit house and the meeting with
your guide. You can use the prompts below:
Sacred altar space
Your sacred altar space is your dedication to you, your
path, your spirit, and your spiritual allies as you take this
journey. An altar can be anywhere, any size and can
even be portable or virtual. It's an area outside of space
and time to feel connection and devotion.
You will first need a place to create your altar: a shelf or
a window ledge is ideal.
Clean your space so give it a good dusting or wipe over.
You could even use an herbal wash to cleanse the area or
add a few drops of essential oils to your washcloth.
You can add to your altar over time but first add the
basics. As this journey is about you, find a photo of
yourself looking happy and add that to your altar. You
are the hero of your journey and often we forget that we
should have a starring role in all pursuits, including
communing with the spiritual realm.
There is no set formula for an altar, you can add
whatever makes you feel good or what is meaningful for
you. Finding inspiration from the seasons can keep you
balanced with mother earth (and the altar looks quite
magical as the colours and items change throughout the
year).
If you a pagan inclined, you might like to keep items that
represent the elements of earth, fire, water ,and air.
Often, particularly in witchcraft circles, these are a
pentacle, candle, chalice, and incense respectively.
Have fun with this space and create it as you wish. If
you don’t have enough room to make a permanent altar,
create one that can be taken down and stored away.
