Georgetown Police Chief to Head County Association
By stewart Lytle, reporter
–––––––––––––––––
REGIONAL – Georgetown Police Chief
Donald C. Cudmore has been sworn in as
president of the Essex County Police Chief
Association during a year when the county law
enforcement leadership faces several critical
issues.
District Attorney Jonathan Blodget swore
Cudmore in as president and other officers
on Dec. 6 at the Black Swan Country Club in
Georgetown. Also serving on the association
executive committee are Merrimac Police Chief
Eric Shears as vice president, North Andover
Chief Charles Gray as secretary and Peabody
Chief Tom Griffin as the association’s treasurer.
Membership in the association includes the
34 police chiefs in the county, the Essex County
Sheriff Evan Coppinger, representatives of the
District Attorney’s office and the state police in
the county. The association also has about 100
associate members.
Cudmore, who has been a Georgetown police
officer since 1985 and chief since 2013, said
he is honored “to represent the Essex County
Chiefs of Police Association and its members.
in the Commonwealth when it comes to
issues surrounding legislation and charitable
organizations.”
The issues facing the association include
opposition to the proposed federal Concealed
Carry Reciprocity Act, help for the mentally ill
and the opioid crisis with almost 300 overdose
deaths this year in the county.
Cudmore listed the Concealed Carry
Reciprocity Act as the top concern after the
U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation
that would allow a gun owner with a permit in
another state to carry a concealed weapon in
Massachusetts.
Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., who sponsored
the bill, said, “Our Second Amendment right
doesn’t disappear when we cross state lines, and
this legislation guarantees that. It will provide
law-abiding citizens the right to conceal carry
and travel freely between states without worrying
about conflicting state codes or onerous civil
suits.”
The major gun rights organizations have
consistently said that a national reciprocity law
AMESBURY – This city plans to roll out the red carpet on Jan. 24 and 25 when a team from the on-line show, Small Business
Revolution – Main Street, arrives to learn why this old, New England mill town should be one of the top five communities that
compete for a $500,000 prize, plus expert marketing advice and worldwide exposure.
Amesbury was selected as one of the top 10 communities for the third season of the show, which attracted the interest and investment
of entrepreneur and Shark Tank host Robert Herjavec. The city is competing against communities across the country, including Exeter,
NH.
“We’re going to win,” said
The
Kassandra Gove, executive
Town
director of the Amesbury Chamber
Common
of Commerce.
The show, sponsored by the Deluxe Corp., one of the nation’s largest printers of checks, brings a production crew and team of
business marketing experts to help revitalize the city itself and several small businesses located there.
With expert branding advice from Herjavec and Deluxe’s “marketing gurus,” being the winner of the show will “bring business and
marketing expertise that will The change Region’s their lives forever,” Largest the show’s Independent web site declares. Community Newspaper
Gove, who helped manage the city’s involvement with the Fireball Run on-line show, found this show on social media when it first
launched. She nominated
This year, she mobilized the city and chamber leaders, who organized a nominating campaign. On the last day that nominations were
being accepted, the Amesbury advocates sent in hundreds of nominations.
“It caught their attention,”
Gove said.
The staff for the show followed
up with surveys and phone
calls to Amesbury, gaining
information and answering the
question: Why should Amesbury
be the winner this year?
Those who nominated
Amesbury suggested the show
could help Amesbury become
a more walkable city. Located
near major interstate highways,
Amesbury is highly accessible to
a large population, but is not a
tourist destination, city leaders
told the show.
They would also like help in
promoting the city as both a retail
and manufacturing community.
Mayor Ken Gray is backing
the campaign. In an email,
the mayor wrote: “Downtown
Amesbury is the heart of our city
and in many ways reflective of
our identity as a community. The
growth of our downtown, fueled
by committed small business
owners and the overwhelming
support and patronage of the
community, remains critical to
Amesbury’s overall success.”
Continued from page 1
is among their top priorities.
Massachusetts Attorney
General Maura Healy was joined
by local district attorneys and
police chiefs in opposition. “In
the aftermath of so many mass
shootings, it would be tragic
for this (legislation) to become
the next deadly loophole in
our nation’s gun laws. This
legislation is dangerous for the
state of Massachusetts, our law
enforcement officers and our
residents. We are disappointed
in the House for passing this
reckless legislation, and we urge
the (U.S.) Senate to respect state
laws, to protect the safety of
communities and to reject this
bill.”
Healy is one of 17 attorney
‘We’re Going to Win’
He noted that the Retailers
Association of Massachusetts
selected a downtown Amesbury
business as the Rookie of the
Year award winner in 2017. That
selection, he wrote, “further
solidified downtown Amesbury
as a model downtown in the
region.”
Being the winner of the
Small Business Revolution
– Main Street, he wrote would
help Amesbury by receiving
“invaluable tools and resources
allowing them to aggressively
compete in an increasingly
competitive retail market,
growing our downtown and
strengthening our community.”
In its first two seasons, the
show focused on Wabash,
IN, and Bristol Borough, PA,
two towns more remote than
Amesbury.
Gove is planning a red
carpet reception for the crew
of six or seven production
staff, plus Amanda Brickman,
Deluxe’s Chief Brand and
Communications Officer, who
hosts the show along with
Herjavec. The crew will spend a
The police chief association
meets once a month in rotating
communities, which Cudmore
said “gets us out, engaged.”
He said being a part of the
association is also good for
networking within the county
law enforcement leadership.
“When would I get to sit down
ROWLEY BOOK CLUB
The Rowley Book Club will be
reading The Throwback Special
by Chris Bachelder, winner of
the Paris Review’s Terry Southern
Prize for Humor. We join twentytwo
men who gather every fall
to reenact what ESPN called
“the most shocking play in NFL
history”: the November 1985
play in which the Redskins’ Joe
Theismann had his leg horribly
broken by Lawrence Taylor of
the New York Giants live on
Monday Night Football. Over
the course of a weekend, through
mishaps, misunderstandings, and
grievances, the men choose roles
and finally enact their bizarre
ritual for what may be the last
time in this moving and comic
tale about manhood, marriage,
and middle age. Join us for a
discussion on Thursday, January
SNOWY OWL PROWL
Saturday, January 6 | 10AM-
12Noon - Wide-open coastal
sites are the location of choice for
wintering Snowy Owls; common
perches are dunes and salt hay
staddles. In winters past, the
owls have been frequent visitors
to the Crane Wildlife Refuge.
Join us as we hike the dunes in
search of these magnificent birds.
Unlike most owls, snowy owls are
diurnal—they hunt and are active
both day and night – so we have
a good chance of sighting one
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It’s
a good time for reunions with those
very special people from your past. You
could be pleasantly surprised by what
comes to light during one of these gettogethers.
(c) 2017 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The
new year gets off to an encouraging start for the Bold Bovine who
takes that demanding workplace challenge by the horns and steers
it in the right direction.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The clever Gemini will be quick to
spot the telltale signs of workplace changes that could open up new
opportunities for the right person. (And that’s you, isn’t it?)
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child’s post-holiday
letdown soon lifts as you begin to get back into your comfortable
routine. Someone from your past extends a surprise bid to
reconnect.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’ve been the ultimate social Lion
over the holidays. Now it’s time to relax and recharge your energy
so you can be at your best when you pounce on that new project.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship could be
moving in a direction you might not want to follow. Step back for
a better overview of the situation. You might be surprised at what
you see.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Emotions rule at the start
of the week, affecting your perception about a decision. Best advice:
Avoid commitments until that good Libran sense kicks back in.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A longtime friendship
could take a romantic turn early in the new year. While this pleases
your passionate side, your logical self might want to go slow.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone
might make a surprising disclosure about a trusted friend or
workplace colleague. Stay cool and reserve judgment until you get
more facts.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think
you’ve found what you’ve been looking for. But appearances can
be deceiving. Don’t act on your discovery until you know more
about it.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re no doubt
anxious for that confusing situation to be cleared up. But don’t
press for a quick resolution or you might overlook some vital
facts.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Now that your holiday
distractions are easing, you need to apply yourself to getting those
unfinished tasks done so you can begin a new project with a clean
slate.
BORN THIS WEEK: People respect both your wisdom and your
deep sense of loyalty and compassion.

Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Thanks again to the The Town
Common for another great year.
At the end of each of the past 12
years, I have used this space to
publish these 21 Suggestions for
Success authored by H. Jackson
Brown, Jr. It is the perfect time
to reflect on the year past and
prepare for any changes we need
to make for the year to come.
How was 2017 for you? While
reflecting on the past year is
important, thinking forward to
the year to come is even more
important. The past is in the
past.
I thought last year might be
the final year for posting this list.
However, knowing that readership
continues to grow for The Town
Common, and realizing how
powerful these words can be, I
decided to republish. So, cut this
out and put it on the refrigerator.
Read this list often and take these
Long gone are the days when
our 15-year-old coffee pot died
and we could confidently run to
the store and buy another just
like it. Things are different now.
That coffee pot (or any other
older appliance) might not be
manufactured anymore, or at
least not in any recognizable
format. The brand names we
used to trust either don’t exist
or have been bought and sold so
many times that they’re the same
in name only.
Today we have to hunt for
simple machines that aren’t
programmable to do a dozen
functions that we don’t want.
Where we used to get stainless
This one decision will
2. Work at something you
3. Give people more than
Commit yourself to
Understand that happiness
is not based on possessions,
power or prestige, but on
steel, now we get plastic, which
we have to research for BPA, a
carcinogen.
The life expectancy of small
appliances has been cut to a mere
few years.
Large appliances are no
different. Generally, your
central air conditioners will last
approximately 15 years, freezers
11 years, refrigerators 13 years
and a washing machine 10 years.
It used to be that you could add at
least 10 years to those numbers.
Nowadays before you buy,
there are questions you need to
ask yourself, often having to do
with size and function rather
than expectation of value and
how long it will last.
Do you really need a 12-cup
coffee maker now, or will a small
4-cup model be enough?
Do you need an oversize
washing machine, or will a
smaller one be enough for the
