John Feehan, Executive Director of the Newburyport YWCA will outline the results of the 2017 homeless count which showed 467 homeless in the Newburyport and surrounding towns, including 334 children. Russell Green, executive director of Family Promise North Shore, will join the panel to highlight their efforts to return newly homeless families to economic self-sufficiency. Since May of 2013, Family Promise North Shore Boston has worked with local faith groups, dedicated staff and hundreds of volunteers to further their mission of housing families and helping them get back on their feet. The meeting will take place Wednesday, January 10, from 7-8 pm at the FRS Parish Hall located at 26 Pleasant Street in Newburyport. LECTURE: WINTER RAPTORS Joppa Flats Education Center offers a monthly lecture series on natural history topics that is free to Mass Audubon members. Children ages 8 and up are welcome. At the end of each of the past 12 years, I have used this space to publish these 21 Suggestions for Success authored by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. It is the perfect time to reflect on the year past and prepare for any changes we need to make for the year to come. How was 2017 for you? While reflecting on the past year is important, thinking forward to the year to come is even more important. The past is in the past. I thought last year might be the final year for posting this list. However, knowing that readership continues to grow for The Town Common, and realizing how powerful these words can be, I decided to republish. So, cut this out and put it on the refrigerator. Read this list often and take these Long gone are the days when our 15-year-old coffee pot died and we could confidently run to the store and buy another just like it. Things are different now. That coffee pot (or any other older appliance) might not be manufactured anymore, or at least not in any recognizable format. The brand names we used to trust either don’t exist or have been bought and sold so many times that they’re the same in name only. Today we have to hunt for simple machines that aren’t programmable to do a dozen functions that we don’t want. This one decision will determine 90% of your happiness or misery. 2. Work at something you enjoy and that’s worthy of your time and talent. 3. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully. 4. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. 5. Be forgiving of yourself and others. Be generous. Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated. Commit yourself to constant improvement. Commit yourself to quality. Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, power or prestige, but on steel, now we get plastic, which we have to research for BPA, a carcinogen. The life expectancy of small appliances has been cut to a mere few years. Large appliances are no different. Generally, your central air conditioners will last approximately 15 years, freezers 11 years, refrigerators 13 years and a washing machine 10 years. It used to be that you could add at least 10 years to those numbers. Nowadays before you buy, there are questions you need to ask yourself, often having to do with size and function rather than expectation of value and how long it will last. Do you really need a 12-cup coffee maker now, or will a small 4-cup model be enough? Do you need an oversize washing machine, or will a smaller one be enough for the 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. Senior Scene relationships with people you love and respect. Be loyal. Be honest. Be a self-starter. Be decisive even if it means you’ll sometimes be wrong. Stop blaming others if it means you’ll sometimes be wrong. Be loyal and courageous. When you look back on your life, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do more than the ones you did.
