Happy New Year
New Year’s Resolutions: Bryan - Lose 15 pounds and become
more active. More walks for the dogs, maybe getting up
earlier to get some exercise in before work. Trying to be
less exhausted after the work day! Closer relationships with
relatives. Boys - Help Maxwell begin to read and help Calvin
to adjust to life at a new school. They both have goals to
become better skateboarders! Anette: Determined to get in
shape this year and is contemplating a vegan-inspired diet.
Ringing in the New Year: “We don’t really do anything at all! Most times, we won’t even make it up to see the ball drop! We usually
try to stay out of the chaos and chill out at home! Would love to see some more snow!”
New Year’s Day Feast: Although this family doesn’t have a traditional meal on New Year’s Day, they have enjoyed a hearty meal of
pork and sauerkraut for a few years but haven’t continued that trend since being in Texas.
New Year, All The Feels: “I think we all appreciate the calendar giving us an opportunity to start over from something if we wish. Of
course we can make resolutions at any time, but when you do it in January, you know that there are tons of other people that are
doing the same thing so you don’t feel so alone. You can choose to fix something, start something new or just strengthen something
about yourself and you have an opportunity for a fresh start simply because of the calendar.”
2017 Reflections: “Probably the importance of family. Both our actual family and our church/neighborhood family. We›ve got family
in Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Florida and here. The opportunities we get to visit with those families are the best. Whether it is a trip to
Florida or visits from the Ohio and Indiana peoples, those are the times that stand out the most in our minds. We moved to a new
house in 2017 which was a big change for us and the process of selling our house, finding a new one and moving is certainly a
huge event for us from 2017 that we will not forget. The help we received from family and friends during that time was amazing to
us and the ability to provide something better for our kids and our future was a blessing.”
2018 Predictions: “Binge watching Netflix shows will actually become a diagnosed disease recognized by the American Medical
Association. Someone will invent a pair of pants made entirely out of bacon and the Houston Zoo will be closed for a week due to
an unfortunate event involving said pants and a curious badger.”
2018 Plans: With Anette’s entrepreneurial spirit, she is always finding new business opportunities. Although they don’t have anything
specific nailed down, there will surely be plenty of new adventures ahead for this dynamic family. Of course, they might take a trip
or two over to Florida to visit relatives. And how cool is this – the kids would love to start training to be American Ninja Warriors!

Mom: Anette - Licensed Veterinary Technician, pet
sitter and self-taught dog groomer. Loves to watch her
boys play sports and develop into little men, clean the
house and pretty much anything to do with animals.
Dad: Bryan – Works in the County Permits Department.
Enjoys building things, woodworking, aspires to be a
good provider for the family and raise his children to
be respectful, hard-working young men.
Calvin: 7 YO 2 nd grader. Loves to skateboard, play
basketball and soccer. Great at drawing, very
resourceful and creative .
Maxwell: 5 YO preschooler. Very social, loves to
skateboard and swim, play with his friends. Has a great
imagination and loves pretending to destroy things...
sometimes actually destroying them by accident!
Favorite Family Pastimes
Going to the pool, walking to the park and
playground area. Playing outside and working
around the house also keeps this family pleasantly
occupied. Exploring nearby restaurants is another
favorite activity this family enjoys, who are happy
to have a wide array of dining, shopping and
entertainment options close by.

HOW DO WE LOOK?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is
not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand
back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover.
Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown,
covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure
the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed
or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook
things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars that are parked in
the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the
driveway. It looks better and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

The Volume of letters sent regarding Violations continues to be an increasing
expense for the Copper Grove Home Owners Association. All expenses
incurred including postage to mail out fines, weigh seriously on the
assessments paid by each homeowner. We request your compliance to help
keep cost to a minimum and to keep our community as attractive as possible.

PET OWNERS
Please be mindful to keep all dogs on a leash when walking them, to keep
the community safe. Also please be respectful of your neighbors and
clean up after your dog. First Service Residential gets a lot of complaints
regarding these issues.

Please DO NOT TAPE FLIERS of any kind to our metal fencing. It removes
the paint when the tape is pulled off. Thus they we need to be painted
before they start to rust.

Although criminal scams occur at all times of the year, the spring and summer
months seem to have an increase in scams related to unneeded home repairs.
Beware of this type of criminal activity, as it is often perpetrated by individuals
who travel from one community to another - here today, gone tomorrow. Home
repair scams often occur in daylight hours, in which a suspect will walk right into
a resident’s home for the purpose of stealing valuables. Often the victimized
homeowner is either in or near the home. T
he best way to keep these individuals from victimizing you is to simply keep your
home locked, even if you are just working in the yard. Remember, anytime you
are outside your home, you cannot possibly see every door that a would-be thief
might enter. Traveling home improvement workers have been known to go doorto-door
offering to pave or seal driveways, replace roofing or other unnecessary
home repairs at a very cheap price.
The criminal will request payment upfront and prefer cash, but may also
accept a check. The perpetrators of this type of criminal behavior will often tell
homeowners they have materials left over from a previous job and will give them
a discount if they act now. It is recommended to check references and go through
the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to determine the credibility of the company.

The new food plate unveiled by the Department of Agriculture sends a
clear message: eat more fruits and vegetables. Here are easy ways to get
more of these important foods into your diet:
Start early: Get in the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables
a day by eating them early with your morning meal. Add a banana to your
cereal, berries to your yogurt, veggies to your omelet.
Make them visible: Set out a fruit bowl in the kitchen or have carrot
sticks available for snacking. Take some time to prepare the fruits or
vegetables, so they are ready to eat.
Frozen is good: Frozen vegetables, such as peas and carrots, are a great
way to make sure you always have vegetables in the house.
At mealtime, think of the veggies first, not the protein: Half of your plate
needs to be filled with fruits and vegetables. Base your meals on what
vegetables you’ll have and then think of the grains and protein to go with it.
Have fruit with your sweets: Fruits are nature’s natural candy. Puree
berries and adding them as a sauce to desserts, such as ice cream.

National Compliment Day
What a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day or to give credit for a
job well done! Give an extra compliment on National Compliment Day,
which is observed annually on January 24 th .
A compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child
or validate someone’s hard work. A compliment not only improves the
receiver’s mood, but it also says something about the giver. It tells them
you noticed. Whether we recognize someone’s achievement or their
classic style, a compliment can go a long way.
To give a great compliment, first be sincere. People have a way of
knowing when we are fake. If you don’t mean it, it’s worse than getting a
thoughtless birthday gift.
Complimenting character versus a new haircut are different rewards.
The first says you respect the person and the other tells them you paid
attention. Sometimes the receiver needs to hear one or the other or both.
Human beings like to be unique, original. Strive to compliment what
makes a person stand out above the rest. Take the time to reflect on what

Recipes
CROISSANT FRENCH TOAST
You could make this on National Cheese Day January 30 th !
INGREDIENTS:
Cooking spray
3 eggs
2 cups half-and-half
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch ground cinnamon
6 croissants, split
1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat griddle to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Spray the griddle with cooking spray.
Whisk eggs together in a bowl until smooth. Add half-and-half, vanilla
extract and cinnamon to eggs and whisk until frothy. Dunk croissants, 1
at a time, into egg mixture just until both sides are coated.
Cook croissants on the hot griddle, split-side down, until golden brown,
2 to 3 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until second side is golden
brown, about 1 minute. Repeat with remaining croissants. Sprinkle
confectioners’ sugar over croissants.

CURRIED CHICKEN
You could make this on National Cream Puff Day January 12 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1 whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces and skin removed
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 tablespoon paprika or to taste
1 tablespoon butter
1 apple, cored and chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 tablespoon curry powder or more to taste
1 (10.75 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup half-and-half cream
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Arrange the
chicken pieces in a single layer in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Season
the chicken liberally with salt, pepper and the paprika, set aside.
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the apple and
onion to the melted butter, season with the curry powder and
cook and stir until the apple and onion are tender, 7 to 10 minutes.
Stir the mushroom soup and half-and-half into the mixture
until completely combined, spoon over the chicken pieces.
Bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink at the bone and
the juices run clear, about 75 minutes. An instant-read thermometer
inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone
should read 180 degrees F (82 degrees C).Source: allrecipes.com

Cfisd Mentor Program
The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from
businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community
and the school district designed to encourage students (elementary
through high school) to finish school and focus on future education and
career goals. A mentor is a suitable role model committed to helping a
student with his/her academic and social development. Mentors meet
with students one-on-one for approximately 30 minutes each week.
Currently, over 700 mentors are matched with students. Mentors must

be 18 years or older. To become a mentor, you must attend a training
session (REGISTER), complete a global volunteer/mentor application
and consent to a criminal history record check.
Training Sessions - Registration is REQUIRED.
• Register for a training session.
• If you would like to schedule mentor training at your place of business,
please contact the Community Engagement department, Leslie Francis,
Director of Marketing and Business Relations at 281-894-3950.
• A volunteer portal account will be created for you in Raptor once
you have been approved as a mentor (this is the system that the front
desk will use at the school in order to give you a nametag). Your login
information will then be sent to you by Raptor via email.
Cy-Fair High School head football coach Ed Pustejovsky (center) is
joined by his fellow winners at the annual Touchdown club of Houston
UIL awards dinner. Pustejovsky received the John Kelley Coach of the
Year Award, as he led the Bobcats to the Class 6A Division II semifinals.
Offensive Player of the Year was Fort Bend Ridge Point tight end Mustapha

Touchdown Club Coach Of The Year
Cy-Fair High School head football coach Ed Pustejovsky earned the top
coaching award by the Touchdown Club of Houston, as he received the
John Kelley Coach of the Year Award at the 38 th annual awards dinner,
held December 13 th at the JW Marriott. Pustejovsky’s win is the first for
CFISD since former Bobcats head coach Ronny Peacock was named
Coach of the Year in 1999.
“Coach Pustejovsky is very deserving of the Houston Touchdown Club’s
Coach of the Year award,” said Ray Zepeda, director of athletics. “He and
his staff have been a model of excellence and consistency over the course
of many seasons.”
Langham Creek head coach Todd Thompson was a finalist for the
coaching award after he lead the Lobos to an 11-2 season and berth
in the Class 6A Division II Region III final. They met Cy-Fair in a historic
all-CFISD regional championship game. CFISD also had finalists for the
two player awards. Cy-Fair senior linebacker Jace Bobo was nominated
for the Clark Nealon Defensive Player of the Year Award, while Cypress
Ranch senior offensive lineman Colten Blanton was a finalist for the Dick
Peebles Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Boy Scout Troop 61
Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy
Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community
Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will
get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the
opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more
about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.
Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun
shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service,
citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more.

The West Houston Thunder is a baseball program for homeschool boys

Northwest Flyers Youth Track
Club Holds Registration
The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club will celebrate its 31 st Anniversary
Season by hosting its annual free Registration/Orientation breakfast on
Saturday, February 3, 2018, for all boys and girls who are interested in
joining for the 2018 track season. The breakfast starts promptly at 8:30
AM at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at
6823 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, TX, 77379.
The event is an opportunity for youth athletes to register for the 2018
spring/summer track season and to meet the Northwest Flyers coaches,
staff and other new and returning athletes. The event will be highlighted
by a special presentation from a member of the USA Track &Field
Olympic organization (USATF). All athletes and parents who wish to join
the Northwest Flyers must attend the orientation.

Call For Artists: Bayou City Art
Festival Memorial Park 2018
Bayou City Art Festival, produced by Art Colony Association, Inc. (ACA),
is inviting artists from around the country to submit applications and
have the opportunity to showcase their art at the nation’s premier spring
outdoor fine art event Friday-Sunday, March 23-25, 2018.
ACA produces Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park in the spring and
Bayou City Art Festival Downtown in the fall. Now entering its 47 th year,
ACA has provided a venue for over 20,000 artists to showcase their work
to thousands of art lovers from all over the world. Patrons have the
opportunity to personally meet the artist, view original works and purchase
world class art. The festival benefits local non-profits and features music,
food, beverages, entertainment, a Children’s Creative Zone and much
more for people of all ages to come and enjoy the city and the festival.
Twice a year, over 1,000 qualified applicants from 19 different disciples
submit their applications to be reviewed by the ACA jurors. For each
festival, a new juror panel is invited and consists of artists, collectors
and industry professionals. The panel of five to seven jurors are selected
based on their specific interests, professional knowledge and background
with the festival. Only 300 artists will be selected to exhibit at the 2018
Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park. Cash Prizes are awarded for “Best
in Show,” second and third, as selected by on-site judges. Ribbons are
awarded for “Best Booth” and all winners receive jury exempt status for
two years as well as priority booth placement.

Mass on 10:30 on Sundays and rehearses every Wednesday from 3:45-5
PM. Unique in the area, the choir focuses on singing music from the rich
Catholic tradition, including chant and polyphony, as well as the finest
modern church music. Time is devoted to building the children’s skills of

English Gateway is a program designed to teach conversational English. The
vision and desire of English Gateway is to assist international families in
learning and improving English skills to help them live and be successful here
in the United States. We offer 6 different levels and have open registration

Epiphany Bingo has been conducting bingo games on the west side since
February 14, 1986. Epiphany conducts their bingo games every Friday night

The Thomas A. Glazier Senior Education Center is located at 16600 Pine
Forest Lane, 77084; one block south of the intersection of HWY. 6 and Clay
Road. All classes/programs are FREE for Harris County residents aged
55+. Must register in person with photo ID in order to participate in the
program and attend all future classes. You may register Monday-Friday
from 8 AM – 3:30 PM. If you have questions or need directions please call
us at 713-274-3250. Volunteer Opportunities are available; please call to
speak to us about teaching your own cooking, language or other class.
The center is closed due to flooding. We are diligently working on getting
the building back up and running soon!

The Katherine Tyra Bear Creek popup libraries include storytime, crafts
for children, laptops with internet access for public use and several
types of books for all ages are available to checkout. Patrons can also
return materials that they’ve borrowed. There will be a late afternoon

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope
and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through
his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service
that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday,
we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that
empowered his revolutionary spirit.
Dr. King knew that it wasn’t enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk for his
words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of action, who put
his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who braved threats and jail
and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make democracy a reality for all
Americans.
On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation united in
justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for children of every
race and room at the inn for every needy child. It is a day of interracial and intercultural
cooperation and sharing. No other day of the year brings so many peoples from different
cultural backgrounds together in such a vibrant spirit of brother and sisterhood. Whether
you are African-American, Hispanic or Native American, whether you are Caucasian or Asian-
American, you are part of the great dream Martin Luther King, Jr. had for America. This is not
a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday.
We commemorate on this holiday the ecumenical leader and visionary who embraced
the unity of all faiths in love and truth. And though we take patriotic pride that Dr. King
was an American, on this holiday we must also commemorate the global leader who
inspired nonviolent liberation movements around the world. Indeed, on this day, programs
commemorating my husband’s birthday are being observed in more than 100 nations.
The Holiday commemorates America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence - the man who
taught by his example that nonviolent action is the most powerful, revolutionary force for
social change available to oppressed people in their struggles for liberation.
This holiday honors the courage of a man who endured harassment, threats and beatings
and even bombings. We commemorate the man who went to jail 29 times to achieve freedom
for others and who knew he would pay the ultimate price for his leadership, but kept on
marching and protesting and organizing anyway.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and
tribute, but above all a day of service. All across America on the Holiday, his followers perform
service in hospitals and shelters and prisons and wherever people need some help. It is a
day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can’t read,
mentoring at-risk youngsters, consoling the broken-hearted and a thousand other projects
for building the beloved community of his dream.
We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment to serve humanity
with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest strength and which empowered
all of the great victories of his leadership. And with our hearts open to this spirit of unconditional
love, we can indeed achieve the Beloved Community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream.
