IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
CPV Crime Watch Committee was being represented by Linsey Pilkinton for
many years. She is moving out of state and the Board will be needing a new
Representative. Please contact S C S if you are interested in representing
our Village. We greatly appreciate Lindsey’s dedication through the years
and she will be missed!!!!
Panhandlers and solicitation is becoming a more frequent issue through
out Copperfield and surrounding neighborhoods! It is important that you
keep safe by locking your doors and vehicles to prevent any theft or breakins!
You can put a “no trespassing” sign in front of your home so the law
can enforce it on your property.
(CPV) DEED RESTRICTIONS VIOLATIONS
IMPORTANT!!!! DO NOT PARK YOUR VEHICLE WHERE IT BLOCKS THE
SIDEWALK. The Harris County Sheriff’s Department is monitoring
this violation throughout the neighborhood and repeated violators
can be ticketed! Illegal parking in the streets are being monitored
by HCSD and tickets are being issued. For more information enroll
in Copperfieldbuzzclub.Nextdoor.com. Sgt. Adam Lightfoot puts out
important information on various laws and issues.
MILDEW: Mildew on the sides of homes have been cited, as well as painting
needed on some homes. We would like to think you care and are proud
about your neighborhood. Get a copy of the deed restrictions if you do not
have one by going into the Copperfield website, www.copperfield.org and
tag on Copperfield Place Village.
FENCING: Check your fencing and repair if boards are loose or missing!
Animals can either come in or out of your yard if boards are missing on to
the street or green belt.
GARBAGE CANS MUST BE STORED OUT OF SIGHT! Garbage pick up is
scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays. In the evening, please remove
trashcans from the street after pickup! Put trash out the night before and
not 2-3 days prior to pickup! If you have issues or questions as to why your
trash is not being picked up, contact Terrie @ SCS.
No boats, trailers, commercial trucks or inoperable vehicles are allowed
in driveways or street and are against deed restriction violations! You
will be charged a fee if you have been cited before for the same offense
or for repeated violations. This offense creates emergency vehicles access
ability at times and therefore considered a serious violation. There a few
residents that have been cited on many occasions for the same violations.
Please be considerate of your neighbors who have a hard time getting
around your illegally parked trailer or boats!!
(CPV) DO NOT DISREGARD
DEED RESTRICTION LETTERS!
Important that you read and act accordingly. If you think you received
this in error, please contact SCS immediately. The deed restriction drive
through is done once a month and violators will be cited. Repeated cites
will automatically be charged against your account.
Easton Commons Village
(EC) 2018 ANNUAL ASSESSMENTS
services to our village; specifically in landscaping. Assessments are due by
January 1, 2018. Payments received after January 31 st will incur a $100
late fee and interest.
(NM) NEW YEARS QUOTE
“Write it on your heart that every day is the
best day in the year.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
We wish all Northmead Village residents a Happy and prosperous New Year and hope that
one of your New Year’s Resolutions will be to meet one new neighbor and make them your
friend in this coming year!
Snow!
Our Neighborhood experienced unexpected weather event in December, SNOW! Some
neighbors shared their pictures with us…. Thanks to Ivan Amancio, Charles Silva and
David Huezo for the aerial shots!
We know that this time of year it may be hard to
pay your assessment all at once. Therefore, the
association offers payment plans up to 4 months.
Please contact SCS Management at 281-463-1777
to learn more about payment plans.
(MG) A MESSAGE FROM
THE BIRD COMMITTEE
As a community, we homeowners must be vigilant
to discourage migratory birds from nesting in
trees on our personal property. Depending on
the weather and the birds migration activity, now
through February should be our months to take
action. We should trim our trees and remove
deadwood. If we see nests left from last season’s
herons and egrets, we should remove those too. We
should thin tree canopy to allow sunlight between
limbs and other trees. This is the best deterrent to
the birds.
This past spring and summer, trees at several
homes in Middlegate became a temporary home
and breeding site for herons, cattle egrets and
other migratory birds. These nesting birds created
noise, odor and significant amounts of excrement.
It is impossible to predict where the birds will
nest next. But once they nest, they must be left
alone. During nesting season, the birds cannot be
disturbed. International treaties, federal law and
state law protect them.
The bird committee remains active year round
to keep current on new developments. Watch
this column and the official Middlegate site
(NM) VOLUNTEERS - IT’S A GREAT TIME TO
START A NEW YEAR AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS!
I know it’s cold now but we are thinking ahead…We are putting together the
Easter Egg Hunt Event for the Spring so sign up for that committee if you want to
get involved. We all had so much fun last year and we hope to make it even better
this year. It’s a fun new year in the neighborhood and a great time to get involved
and make new friends. Please contact grahammanagement@sbcglobal.net if you
can volunteer to help with planning and/or at the events.
(NM) JOIN THE CROWD ON NEXTDOOR.COM
Register at www.nextdoor.com. It only takes a few seconds to get up to date
and checking out what is going on in the neighborhood. You can sell items, find
lost pets, read a weekly share from Sgt. Lightfoot at the Sheriff’s office and get
recommendations. It’s a great way to stay in touch. Join us!
(NM) BRRRRR…. YOUR PETS GET COLD TOO!
Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your
animals inside. From the American Veterinary Association:
• Smaller pets should be kept inside as much as possible.
• Large or small, if your pet is shivering, you should bring them in immediately.
• Owners of senior or arthritic pets should use extra care in cold weather.
• Short haired breeds will do better with a sweater on walks and even longer
haired breeds can benefit if the walk is a long one.
• Warm cars are inviting to animals looking for a warm place in the cold. Make
noise on your car before starting it to scare them away.
• A cold car can act like a refrigerator by keeping cold in and intensifying it. When
it’s cold outside, don’t leave pets in a car for more than a few minutes.
• Clean up any spills from anti-freeze, it’s a sweet temptation to pets.
• Check out what the Humane Society says about keeping your pet safe in cold
weather. www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/protect_pets_winter.
html.
• Lost Pets! - It’s even more important to help lost pets find their way home in the
cold weather. If you see or find a pet that is lost make sure it’s is safe and warm if
you can do so safely, then snap a picture and put it on Nextdoor Neighborhood
and remember to mention the location! We see beloved pets returned to their
families every week on the message board. Remember all pets must be leashed
when out and about in the neighborhood.
COPPERFIELD CRIME WATCH
Crime Watch Meeting - January 16, 2018 at 6:30 PM in the
Copperfield Community Center.
(NM) MIGRATORY BIRD WATCH
AND PREVENTION - JANUARY &
FEBRUARY IS WATCH TIME!
It’s time to begin work on the prevention of nesting Egrets and
Herons in Northmead Village. The city of Ft. Worth has a great
website full of prevention information and pictures of all the birds
at http://fortworthtexas.gov/migratorybirds.
October-January
• Remove any old, abandoned nests.
• Trim your trees. Remove deadwood, thin tree canopy to allow
sunlight between limbs and other trees.
January
• Familiarize yourself with “sentry” birds. They are the first to
arrive, looking for good nesting places.
February-March
• Watch for “sentry” birds and report sightings to your neighbors.
• Each species has a different breeding period. Be on the lookout
for these birds beginning at these times:
February - Yellow-Crowned Night Heron
March - Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Little Blue
Heron, Snowy Egret
Check daily for birds and nesting material in your trees.
• Begin scare tactics as soon as you see birds on or near your
property.
• Use noisemakers, water spray or shine lights at night.
• Hang “scare eye” balloons or other moving objects in trees.
• Use long poles, tennis balls or water hoses to disturb early
nesting material.
Do not harm birds or eggs. Migratory birds are protected by
international treaty. Once birds begin sitting on nests, eggs are
probably present. You cannot kill, harass, move or disturb the
birds during nesting season.
(NM) 2018 NORTHMEAD
must be picked up from the curb by 6 PM, the day of pickup. So… you
cannot have trash on the curb until Monday and Thursday nights until 6
PM and everything must be removed from the curb by 6 PM on Tuesdays
and Fridays. This includes any bags that contain lawn clippings. If you
have a lawn service, have them place the bags behind your fence and
not leave the clippings on the curb.
Our recycling day is Tuesday. Please have your recycling bin at the curb by
7 AM on Tuesdays. Please pick up your recycling by 6 PM on Tuesdays to
comply with our deed restrictions.
(SD) HARRIS COUNTY FLOOD CONTROL
DISTRICT TO LAUNCH STORM DRAIN REPAIR
PROJECT AT SOUTHDOWN CREEK
Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) has provided an update, following
earlier communication with the Association, and site inspections.
HCFCD will be performing a repair project at various locations throughout the
drainage channel U106-08-00 (the creek running along Lowery Elementary). The
project includes work on outfalls (the end sections at the creek of the corrugated iron
pipes, that originate from the storm drains in our streets). Multiple sections of the
concrete hike and bike trail will be removed in order for HCFCD to properly repair the
failed drainage structures. Construction is tentatively scheduled for January 2018.
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
Please add the following to your list of resolutions to make 2018 the best
year possible for our community:
• Be extra vigilant throughout the year but especially in January because
trends indicate a rise in crime during this month.
•Lock doors, windows, garages and vehicles at all times.
• Remove all valuables - purses, cell phones, briefcases, computers,
passports, navigation devices - from vehicles. Never leave guns in your
vehicle.
• Park vehicles in the garage or driveway, not on the street, to help with
traffic flow and to keep our kids safe. There are some cul-de-sacs an
emergency vehicle such as a fire truck cannot access because of the
vehicles parked on the street blocking entry.
• Record serial numbers on electronics, bikes, lawn equipment & tools.
Etch name and address on items targeted by thieves.
• Take photos of expensive items and jewelry. This can help with the
recovery of stolen items brought to pawn shops.
• Westcreek Village is a no solicitation neighborhood so to report
suspicious individuals, vehicles or activity call the nonemergency
number 713-221-6000 option #6. When possible, write down license plate
numbers and a description of the vehicle. Program the non-emergency
Sheriff Department’s number in the cell phone of all family members. See
something suspicious, say something.
• Join the WCCW Committee for its monthly meeting the 3 rd Monday of
the month at the Forest Heights poolroom at 6 PM. The meeting lasts less
than an hour and is a good way to discuss crime prevention tips which
apply to our neighborhood. For more information contact our chairperson
at lberger@comcast.net.
WESTCREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Meetings - 2 nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM
Location - Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room
The Westcreek Landscape Committee meets on the 2 nd Monday
every month. If you are interested in helping make a difference in our
neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome
and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is
always room for you!
Comments, suggestions or questions regarding common areas or
other landscape topics are always welcome. Please contact Graham
Management at 713-334-8000 - they will forward your message, request
or information to the committee. A member will then get back with you to
answer your questions or concerns.
Also, you may have noticed a new service provider performing the
community maintenance work. LMS has replaced Pampered Lawns
effective back in November. We welcome LMS as a partner in making our
neighborhood a better place to call home.
2018 SCHEDULE
If you haven’t started a feeding calendar or outdoor care schedule or have
not transferred previous schedules to this years’ calendar then now would
be a good time to do so. A great lawn and garden fertilization schedule
(either conventional or organic) can be obtained online at: www.ktrh.com/
articles/gardenline-fertilizer-schedule-478564. This can be used as a basis
for scheduling garden feedings as well as planting events or even vegetable
harvests that you can then record/track and ensure timely completion of.
MONARCH BUTTERFLIES
If you have spent any time outdoors over the past several weeks surely you
will have noticed many beautiful butterflies, Monarch as well as others,
that are on their way south for the cooler months. We as homeowners
need to take care and not allow these visitors to become too comfortable
as they pass through - many species of butterflies are attracted to
milkweed, which can be harmful to them. If you have planted a tropical
variety of milkweed to attract these visitors, unfortunately it does not die
off when temperatures grow cooler and a parasite can be passed on to
the butterflies that stay around our area due to the milkweed that is still
available to them. Please cut back any milkweed you may have growing
in your garden areas. The Monarchs will be encouraged to continue their
journey southward for the winter if they cannot find a plentiful food source.
More information can be found via the following link: www.sciencemag.
org/news/2015/01/plan-save-monarch-butterflies-backfires.
LAWN/GARDEN CARE
Reminder, cold nights will surely be upon us in January - so please be
prepared! If you have tropical plants or specimens that are sensitive to
temperatures near or below freezing, they will require special attention if
you intend to enjoy their presence come next spring and summer.
• Obtain or create frost covers or sheets (made of fabric, NOT plastic).
• Have the covers readily available to avoid delays if coverage is needed.
The very cold weather usually roars in with little warning.
• Be sure the root ball area of all plants is thoroughly protected with mulch.
• Water plants thoroughly the night prior of cold weather, the moisture
actually protects the roots.
• Avoid anti-siphon valve damage! If you can, it pays to turn off the
water supply to your irrigation system completely when sub-freezing
temperatures threaten without having to interrupt supply to your entire
home. Adequate irrigation this time of year can usually be performed
manually only once weekly.
CLEAN-UP/PRUNING
• The ideal time to begin shrub/bush pruning is in late February. Early to
mid-February for Crape Myrtles, White Oaks and Azaleas is the ideal time.
Heavy pruning on Roses is also best in February, not January.
• Dead ground cover like Lantana if not already pruned back can be pruned
all the way to its base now as its root ball is still alive and will not be spurred
into new growth until mid-spring. Dead flowers in bedding areas must be
removed now if not already.
• Heavy tree trimming of Live Oaks, Pear or Elm trees should be performed
NOW, before mid-March, after the threat of freeze has left the area for the
season.
• DO NOT “TOP” cut the tree!
• Remember that if you know a large tree is dead due to disease or age
and will NOT be coming back come springtime, immediate removal is
recommended, regardless of the time of year.
COOL WEATHER PLANTING AND WORK
• Enrich soil in bedding areas now where new plants will be placed come
spring, before the plants and mulch are laid down in these areas.
• The cooler months are perfect for planting herbs that are best suited for
cooler months. Ideal herbs include Cilantro, Rosemary, French Sorrel, all
parsleys, Creeping winter savory or Chervil. Basil will NOT do well at all in
these cooler months!
• Cyclamen are great-looking flowers that do really well in the colder
months and can be found now until early February. These flowers
even do well in hot spring months in shaded areas, as long as they are
adequately watered. Pansies may also do well as long as they are covered
during a freeze.
• Quince (chaenomeles) are a hedge-type bush that provide beautiful
flowers, although they are like roses and come with thorns, so beware!
Calendula, Candytuft (iberis), English daisy (Bellis perennis), Heath (don’t
over-water these!) ornamental Kale, Snapdragons, Stock and Viola are
wonderful for the bedding and garden areas and all do well in the cooler
months.
• Heavy landscape work such as tree removal, lawn leveling, irrigation
installation or excavation work should be performed now before it gets
hot again.
CFISD MENTOR PROGRAM
The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers
from businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations,
the community and the school district designed to encourage
students (elementary through high school) to finish school and
focus on future education and career goals. A mentor is a suitable
role model committed to helping a student with his/her academic
and social development. Mentors meet with students one-onone
for approximately 30 minutes each week. Currently, over 700
mentors are matched with students. Mentors must be 18 years or
older.
To become a mentor, you must attend a training session
(REGISTER), complete a global volunteer/mentor application and
consent to a criminal history record check.
Training Sessions - Registration is REQUIRED.
• Register for a training session.
• If you would like to schedule mentor training at your place
of business, please contact the Community Engagement
department, Leslie Francis, Director of Marketing and Business
Relations at 281-894-3950.
• A volunteer portal account will be created for you in Raptor once
you have been approved as a mentor (this is the system that the
front desk will use at the school in order to give you a nametag).
Your login information will then be sent to you by Raptor via email.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.
FREE MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOP
Cypress Historical Society at Cypress Top Historic Park beginning January 18 th
and running through February 22 nd from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. Everyone has a story
and everyone has memories. Some of them are good. Others are not so good. But,
all of them are valuable. This workshop is about preserving your family history,
one memory at a time. With the help of your teacher, coach and mentor you will
learn to jar those faded memories loose, then compose, organize, preserve and
share them electronically for future generations. Jackie Devine loves working
with active writers and people who have never tried to write! This course will help
you understand the memoir writing process: story structure, scenes, dialogue,
character development, tone and voice. You’ll learn that you are creating a legacy.
If desired, stories will be recorded and saved online where family and friends can
enjoy them for years to come. Located behind Juergen’s Hall Community Center,
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives
with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see
January Is
National Blood Donor Month
Blood donors are ordinary people - high school students, factory
and office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents
and people from every walk of life. But they share one thing - a
generous spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help
others. Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern
healthcare. Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures
involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a
safe and reliable blood supply.
The Red Cross is also a leader in research and testing to protect the
safety of the blood supply. They were among the first to develop
and implement testing for many infectious diseases including, HIV,
hepatitis B and C viruses, West Nile virus and more recently the
agent of Chagas disease.
If you already donate blood, thank you! You are making a lifesaving
contribution that benefits accident victims, cancer patients,
surgical candidates, children with blood disorders and many
others. If you have never donated blood, please consider doing so.
Your donations are always in constant demand.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope
and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through
his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service
that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday,
we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that
empowered his revolutionary spirit.
Dr. King knew that it wasn’t enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk for his
words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of action, who put
his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who braved threats and jail
and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make democracy a reality for all
Americans.
On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation united in
justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for children of every
race and room at the inn for every needy child. It is a day of interracial and intercultural
cooperation and sharing. No other day of the year brings so many peoples from different
cultural backgrounds together in such a vibrant spirit of brother and sisterhood. Whether
you are African-American, Hispanic or Native American, whether you are Caucasian or Asian-
American, you are part of the great dream Martin Luther King, Jr. had for America. This is not
a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday.
We commemorate on this holiday the ecumenical leader and visionary who embraced the
unity of all faiths in love and truth. And though we take patriotic pride that Dr. King was
an American, on this holiday we must also commemorate the global leader who inspired
nonviolent liberation movements around the world. Indeed, on this day, programs
commemorating my husband’s birthday are being observed in more than 100 nations.
The Holiday commemorates America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence - the man who
taught by his example that nonviolent action is the most powerful, revolutionary force for
social change available to oppressed people in their struggles for liberation.
This holiday honors the courage of a man who endured harassment, threats and beatings and
even bombings. We commemorate the man who went to jail 29 times to achieve freedom for
others and who knew he would pay the ultimate price for his leadership, but kept on marching
and protesting and organizing anyway.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and
tribute, but above all a day of service. All across America on the Holiday, his followers perform
service in hospitals and shelters and prisons and wherever people need some help. It is a
day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can’t read,
mentoring at-risk youngsters, consoling the broken-hearted and a thousand other projects
for building the beloved community of his dream.
We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment to serve humanity
with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest strength and which empowered
all of the great victories of his leadership. And with our hearts open to this spirit of unconditional
love, we can indeed achieve the Beloved Community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream.
