with libretto by the Neapolitan-based Abbate
Francesco Maria Paglia. Ten years later, during a year
of intense activity by Scarlatti in Rome, an updated
version of the same work was made, in which
references to Naples are replaced by Roman
references. This edition contains both versions of the
work. Score, 139 p.
COMPLETE PIANO WORKS
G. Henle Verlag (Munich, Germany, 2010)
6 volume set of study scores. For solo piano. Urtext
Edition. On the 200th anniversary of Robert
Schumann’s birth, an ambitious project is coming to a
close: for the first time since Clara Schumann’s
Complete Edition of 1879-93, all of the works for piano
solo are appearing as one editorial project. Spanning
almost ten years of painstaking work, all of the
Schumann titles published by G. Henle Publishers
have undergone a careful revision. Ernst Herttrich has
closely examined each edition and also dedicated
himself to those works that were previously missing
from the catalogue. Arranged clearly according to
opus numbers, it includes not only all of Schumann’s
piano works, revised to reflect the latest scholarly
findings, but also informative accompanying texts,
alternative versions and much more besides. Study
score set in a slipcase.
MASSES FOR THE SISTINE CHAPEL
University of Chicago Press (Chicago, IL, 2010)
Edited by Bonnie J. Blackburn. From the series,
Monuments of Renaissance Music, Vol. 13. Donated in the
late fifteenth century to the papal choir, the musical
manuscript Cappella Sistina 14 reflects a new style of
Mass composition used by some of the era’s most
noted composers. Masses for the Sistine Chapel makes the
complete contents of the Cappella Sistina 14- held in the
Vatican Library - available for the first time. Featuring
fifteen masses and four mass fragments, this volume
includes works by such composers as Guillaume Du
Fay, Johannes Ockeghem, and Antoine Busnoys. In a
comprehensive introduction and critical commentary
on each work, Richard Sherr places the choirbook in
its historical context, describing its physical makeup
as well as the repertory. Sherr’s critical edition of this
celebrated manuscript finally provides the insight
necessary to inform future performances and
recordings of its influential contents. Hardcover book,
