WE NEVER LEARN: THE GUNK
PUNK UNDERGUT, 1988-2001
Backbeat Books (New York, NY, 2010)
“Nirvana,” the “White Stripes,” “Hole,” the “Hives”
- all sprang from an underground music scene where
similarly raw bands, enjoying various degrees of
success and hard luck, played for throngs of fans in
venues ranging from dive bars to massive festivals,
but were mostly ignored by a music industry
focused on mega-bands and shiny pop stars. “We
Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001”
tracks the inspiration and beautiful destruction of
this largely undocumented movement. What they
took, they fought for, every night. They reveled in
50s rock ‘n’ roll and 60s garage rock while creating
their own wave of gut-busting riffs and rhythm.
FOREVER CHANGES
Arthur Lee and the Book of Love
Jawbone Press (Berkeley, CA, 2010)
“Forever Changes - Arthur Lee and the Book of Love”
tells the life story of an incredible contemporary
musical talent who died tragically of leukemia.
Fronting the first ever fully integrated rock band, Lee
emerged from the nascent L.A. folk-rock scene on the
Sunset Strip in 1965 with the band “Love” to become
the prince of the Strip. “Love’s” first three albums
were groundbreaking, combining elements of folkrock,
garage-punk, jazz, blues, flamenco, and classical
music. Through exclusive interviews with those
closest to Lee, “Forever Changes” paints a portrait of
this intriguing, remarkable cult figure. The book also
includes Lee’s own voice throughout, drawn from his
personal writings, letting both dedicated fans and
newcomers discover this singular artist like never
before. Paperback, 336 p.
MUSIC, THEATER, AND
CULTURAL TRANSFER
University of Chicago Press (Chicago, IL, 2009)
Opera and musical theater dominated French culture
in the 1800s, and the influential stage music that
emerged from this period helped make Paris, as
Walter Benjamin put it, the “capital of the nineteenth
century.” The fullest account available of this artistic
ferment and its international impact, “Music, Theater,
and Cultural Transfer” explores the diverse
institutions that shaped Parisian music and extended
its influence across Europe, the Americas, and
Australia. Hardcover book, 456 p.
SONGS OF HOLLYWOOD, THE
Oxford University Press (Cary, NC, 2010)
From Over the Rainbow to Moon River and from Al Jolson
to Barbara Streisand, “The Songs of Hollywood”
traces the fascinating history of song in film, both in
musicals and in dramatic movies such as “High
Noon.” Extremely well-illustrated with 200 film stills,
this delightful book sheds much light on some of
Hollywood’s best known and loved repertoire,
explaining how the film industry made certain songs
memorable, and highlighting important moments of
film history along the way. The book focuses on how
the songs were presented in the movies, from early
talkies where actors portrayed singers “performing”
the songs, to the Golden Age in which characters burst
into expressive, integral song - not as a “performance”
but as a spontaneous outpouring of feeling. Hardback,
RETURN OF THE KING
Elvis Presley’s Great Comeback
Jawbone Press (Berkeley, CA, 2010)
On January 1, 1967, a contract between “Colonel” Tom
Parker and his sole client, Elvis Presley, gave Parker a
50 percent cut of profits that Presley generated. It was
a shameless grab for a bigger piece of a pie that had
actually been shrinking for some time. Though
Parker’s plan to re-establish Presley as a star after he
left the army proved successful at first (with the
triumph of films like “G.I. Blues” and “Blue Hawaii”),
by 1967 Presley’s singles struggled to break the top 20,
and he hadn’t hit number one for six years.
Amazingly, by the end of 1968 he was artistically
revitalized, re-emerging in a TV comeback special and
slimmed down for the now-iconic black leather suit. It
was the pivotal moment of the second great period of
Presley’s career, which lasted through to the end of
1970, during which he recorded some of his most
enduring records, including Suspicious Minds and In the
Ghetto. “Return of the King” document’s Presley
reclamation of his crown, making an extraordinary
transition from fading balladeer to engaged, vital
artist. Paperback, 272 p.
