Our Great Victory
2017 saw The Weekly Times win the fight to
stop the state government's forced mergers
of Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and the City of
Ryde Councils alongside the forced merger of
the City of Canada Bay with Burwood and
Strathfield.
A community victory celebration in Woolwich
acclaimed this newspaper's fight to save local
democracy which was declared to be the
greatest campaign run by a local, independent
newspaper in Australian history.
Abuse of The Weekly Times by former Ryde
Mayor Cl r Bi II Pickering backfired spectacu I arly
when he and Deputy Mayor Jane Stott were
dumped by the Liberal Party days before last
September's local government elections.
The election resulted in Labor's Jerome Laxale
elected Mayor of the City of Ryde with the
vote of two new councillors from The Greens.
In Hunters Hill, Mark Bennett (Ind) was lected
Mayor.
The Liberal Party fared better in the December
by-election in Bennelong with John Alexander
re-elected after he resigned in the wake of the
citizenship affair.
THE YEAR IN REVIEW will continue over the next
three weeks as The Weekly Times looks back on
the news that defined our community and the
triumphs of our sporting men, women and
children.
