Project Independence Hopes to
Preserve 2017 in Time Capsule
By Katie Moritz
The American short story writer
Katherine Anne Porter once wrote:
“The past is never where you think you
left it.” This is particularly true for time capsules.
But Project Independence, an adult day
health service center located in downtown
Barre, is determined to remember.
At 2PM on a Friday afternoon, December
29, 2017, staff and Project Independence
participants gathered items they deemed
important symbols of currents times and
placed them in a time capsule, which they
then buried in the basement of their building,
located at 81 North Main Street, Suite #1.
They do not intend to open it until 2PM,
December 29, 2018. Many participants wondered
how different the world and the local
area would become over 365 days. One participant
commented that “It will be interesting
to see how many businesses on our list of
businesses have changed in a year.”
Items in the time capsule included a Project
Independence business card, a current list of
employees, a December Project Independence
calendar, a current Times Argus newspaper
article, a piece of granite from Rock of Ages,
a listing of Silly Vermont Laws still on the
books in Barre, a list of businesses located on
Main Street, a blessing for future participants
and staff, a Bingo card, some current photos
of participants, and even a copy of the
WORLD’s Year in Review.
Also included was a bible, which, as one
participant stated, “was very important” to
many folks, and a photo of Donna Moran, a
regular volunteer and performer who keeps
the front windows decorated according to the
seasons. Even Moran’s guitar pick made it
in.
Although Project Independence’s time
capsule, which will be registered with the
International Time Capsule Society, is in
many ways ordinary, it also represents larger
themes. Bingo, which is the most popular
game played at the center, brings folks
together in a shared sense of fun; photos of
staff, volunteers, and participants offer a
visual reminder of connection; a piece of
granite symbolizes the strength and endurance
of Barre; newspaper articles offer
glimpses into community.
Time capsules in general are an interesting
phenomenon and often the history surrounding
the capsule itself can be just as intriguing
as what is actually inside. When going over
the list of the ten most wanted time capsules
according to the International Time Capsule
Society at Oglethorpe University in Georgia,
it may be a surprise to find that Vermont
makes the list.
In 1891, the town of Lyndon celebrated its
100th anniversary. According to an article
published on July 10th, 1891 in The Vermont
Journal, the town of Lyndon decided to commemorate
it with a time capsule that was not
to be opened for another one hundred years.
When 1991 came around, the Lyndon
Bicentennial Commission went looking.
According to a New York Times article titled
“Search for Piece of Past Offers Lesson for
Future,” the author states that the commission
“looked in attics and basements, bank
vaults and file cabinets. And still no time
capsule.”
There are several explanations: perhaps it
was left in a house or location that, due to
fire, or change in ownership, was relocated
and lost in the shuffle; perhaps someone simply
took the contents from it; or perhaps it
was never buried at all, as the weather was
harsh on that day, and according to records,
several planned activities has been canceled.
As 2018 takes off, it’s easy to think back to
the past year and wonder where bits and
pieces of one’s life have gone. As things
change, and as we ourselves change, we may
look back in hopes of finding something in its
original form. Something to remind us.
Something to mark how far we have come.
Or at least a good story to explain why we
can’t find it at all.
Project Independence plans to skip all that
drama though, and keep close tabs on their
time capsule. It’ll be interesting to see what
has changed and what has remained the
same.
