2018 is the 50th Anniversary of the
Fair Housing Act
In 2018 the National Association of REAL-
TORS® will join with our partners and allies
in a year-long commemoration of the
50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act.
The commemoration will focus on three
key elements of Fair Housing:
Fair housing is more than a list of dos and
don’ts, rights and penalties, and mandatory
continuing education. As stewards of
the right to own, use and transfer private
property, fair housing protects our livelihood
and business as REALTORS® and
depends on a free, open market that embraces
equal opportunity.
• Acknowledging the organization’s
past role in the fight for fair housing
• Understanding how we as a nation
are constantly improving our commitment
to fair housing; and

Presidents Message

Welcome to 2018
Happy New Year!!
Years come and
years go. During
2017 we saw the
inauguration of the
45th US President,
devastatingly deadly
hurricanes and
flooding, California
wildfires, record breaking opioids overdoses,
historic stock market economic
highs, increased listings and sales and the
abuse of women spotlighted and powerful
men held accountable for misuse of
their authority to name a few.
During the first week of January 2018, we
experienced record breaking cold and between
5” to 15” of snowfall in our region.
According to local news reports much of
the snow fell in the Hampton Roads region.
The snow and ice caused businesses,
schools to close and activities to be cancelled.
The snowy conditions saw a rise in
people helping other people in need and
the best of man was demonstrated.
In the first week of 2018, we observed a
Virginia Delegate’s political race decided
by a drawing, because the November
vote total ended in a tie. This election
reminded us of the importance of political
participation and that every vote matters.
I have often said if you don’t vote, don’t
complain.
We’ll find 2018 will present different challenges
to each of us. How will you handle
challenges you will face during this year?
Many people resolve to discontinue undesirable
habits or change behavior. We
set goals and establish objectives for the
New Year. We move from the old of 2017
to the new of 2018 with renewed attitude,

energy and vigor.
The 2018 Virginia Peninsula Association
of Realtors Board of Directors are dedicated
to providing the best possible service
to all VPAR members. As 2018 VPAR
President I am committed to continuing
the leadership excellence we are accustomed
to receiving. Your input is welcomed
and appreciated. I look forwarding
to hearing from the membership. If there
are areas you feel we could provide better
service, I only ask that with any concerns
submitted, that you also submit possible
solutions to the concerns presented.
Our January 4, 2018 General Membership
meeting was cancelled because of snow
and icy road conditions. The General
Membership meeting will be rescheduled.
During the VPAR Board December 2017
meeting the 2018 Committee Chairs
and C-Chairs were approved. Chairs and
Co-Chairs Committee leaders and VPAR
Board training is scheduled for January
18, 2018.
Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors
regularly develops and conducts new
member orientation and training for the
membership. A round table discussion
allows class interaction with various leaders
including the VPAR President, President
Elect and CEO.
As the temperature rises and the snow
melts we will return to our normal activities.
Be careful traveling on those snow
covered icy roads and sidewalks. Happy
New Year!!

Happy New Year from your VPAR Charitable
Foundation! As we look back at 2017, your
Foundation did some amazing things.
Some of our successes in 2017 were to:
1. Reform the Charitable Foundation
Board of Directors into a group that meets
regularly and has a defined mission and more
importantly, a defined plan to help housing
related charities in our area.
2. All of our legal documentation pertaining
to a nonprofit organization has been
updated, completed, and approved by all
required state and federal authorities.
3. In November, we donated $32,500
to several charities on the Peninsula. Thank
YOU!
4. Established 2018 fundraising events
that will include the highly successful annual
golf tournament in May, a Bowlathon in July,
Casino Night in October and a Movie Theater
night on January 16th. A Silent Auction will be
added to the Movie Night.
5. As mentioned, the Movie Theatre
night will be on January 16th for a REALTOR/
guest private viewing of the new Star Wars
movie at the City Center Paragon Theater.
Presale tickets are $25 and include a ticket
to the movie, food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Tickets are available at VPAR, and the
Newport News branches of Liz Moore & Associates,
Century 21 Nachman, and Berkshire
Hathaway Towne Realty.
6. We also picked out 4 non-fundraising
months to conduct our hands-on assistance to
these housing related charities. For example,
we could be helping Habitat for Humanity
with a home construction project or LINK and
their winter homeless shelter program. Our
first event will be working with the Food Bank
in Poquoson on January 23rd at 9 AM. Come
on out to support a great cause and wear
clothes suitable for getting dirty.
