Fair Housing Makes US Stronger.<br />

<strong>2018</strong> is the 50th Anniversary of the<br />

Fair Housing Act<br />

In <strong>2018</strong> the National Association of REAL-<br />

TORS® will join with our partners and allies<br />

in a year-long commemoration of the<br />

50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act.<br />

The commemoration will focus on three<br />

key elements of Fair Housing:<br />

Fair housing is more than a list of dos and<br />

don’ts, rights and penalties, and mandatory<br />

continuing education. As stewards of<br />

the right to own, use and transfer private<br />

property, fair housing protects our livelihood<br />

and business as REALTORS® and<br />

depends on a free, open market that embraces<br />

equal opportunity.<br />

• Acknowledging the organization’s<br />

past role in the fight for fair housing<br />

• Understanding how we as a nation<br />

are constantly improving our commitment<br />

to fair housing; and<br />

• Embracing REALTORS®’ role at the<br />

Welcome to <strong>2018</strong><br />

Happy New Year!!<br />

Years come and<br />

years go. During<br />

2017 we saw the<br />

inauguration of the<br />

45th US President,<br />

devastatingly deadly<br />

hurricanes and<br />

flooding, California<br />

wildfires, record breaking opioids overdoses,<br />

historic stock market economic<br />

highs, increased listings and sales and the<br />

abuse of women spotlighted and powerful<br />

men held accountable for misuse of<br />

their authority to name a few.<br />

During the first week of <strong>January</strong> <strong>2018</strong>, we<br />

experienced record breaking cold and between<br />

5” to 15” of snowfall in our region.<br />

According to local news reports much of<br />

the snow fell in the Hampton Roads region.<br />

The snow and ice caused businesses,<br />

schools to close and activities to be cancelled.<br />

The snowy conditions saw a rise in<br />

people helping other people in need and<br />

the best of man was demonstrated.<br />

In the first week of <strong>2018</strong>, we observed a<br />

Virginia Delegate’s political race decided<br />

by a drawing, because the November<br />

vote total ended in a tie. This election<br />

reminded us of the importance of political<br />

participation and that every vote matters.<br />

I have often said if you don’t vote, don’t<br />

complain.<br />

We’ll find <strong>2018</strong> will present different challenges<br />

to each of us. How will you handle<br />

challenges you will face during this year?<br />

Many people resolve to discontinue undesirable<br />

habits or change behavior. We<br />

set goals and establish objectives for the<br />

New Year. We move from the old of 2017<br />

to the new of <strong>2018</strong> with renewed attitude,<br />

<strong>Peninsula</strong> <strong>REALTOR®</strong> page 6<br />

energy and vigor.<br />

The <strong>2018</strong> Virginia <strong>Peninsula</strong> Association<br />

of Realtors Board of Directors are dedicated<br />

to providing the best possible service<br />

to all VPAR members. As <strong>2018</strong> VPAR<br />

President I am committed to continuing<br />

the leadership excellence we are accustomed<br />

to receiving. Your input is welcomed<br />

and appreciated. I look forwarding<br />

to hearing from the membership. If there<br />

are areas you feel we could provide better<br />

service, I only ask that with any concerns<br />

submitted, that you also submit possible<br />

solutions to the concerns presented.<br />

Our <strong>January</strong> 4, <strong>2018</strong> General Membership<br />

meeting was cancelled because of snow<br />

and icy road conditions. The General<br />

Membership meeting will be rescheduled.<br />

During the VPAR Board December 2017<br />

meeting the <strong>2018</strong> Committee Chairs<br />

and C-Chairs were approved. Chairs and<br />

Co-Chairs Committee leaders and VPAR<br />

Board training is scheduled for <strong>January</strong><br />

18, <strong>2018</strong>.<br />

Virginia <strong>Peninsula</strong> Association of Realtors<br />

regularly develops and conducts new<br />

member orientation and training for the<br />

membership. A round table discussion<br />

allows class interaction with various leaders<br />

including the VPAR President, President<br />

Elect and CEO.<br />

As the temperature rises and the snow<br />

melts we will return to our normal activities.<br />

Be careful traveling on those snow<br />

covered icy roads and sidewalks. Happy<br />

New Year!!<br />

Happy New Year from your VPAR Charitable<br />

Foundation! As we look back at 2017, your<br />

Foundation did some amazing things.<br />

Some of our successes in 2017 were to:<br />

1. Reform the Charitable Foundation<br />

Board of Directors into a group that meets<br />

regularly and has a defined mission and more<br />

importantly, a defined plan to help housing<br />

related charities in our area.<br />

2. All of our legal documentation pertaining<br />

to a nonprofit organization has been<br />

updated, completed, and approved by all<br />

required state and federal authorities.<br />

3. In November, we donated $32,500<br />

to several charities on the <strong>Peninsula</strong>. Thank<br />

YOU!<br />

4. Established <strong>2018</strong> fundraising events<br />

that will include the highly successful annual<br />

golf tournament in May, a Bowlathon in July,<br />

Casino Night in October and a Movie Theater<br />

night on <strong>January</strong> 16th. A Silent Auction will be<br />

added to the Movie Night.<br />

5. As mentioned, the Movie Theatre<br />

night will be on <strong>January</strong> 16th for a REALTOR/<br />

guest private viewing of the new Star Wars<br />

movie at the City Center Paragon Theater.<br />

Presale tickets are $25 and include a ticket<br />

to the movie, food and non-alcoholic beverages.<br />

Tickets are available at VPAR, and the<br />

Newport News branches of Liz Moore & Associates,<br />

Century 21 Nachman, and Berkshire<br />

Hathaway Towne Realty.<br />

6. We also picked out 4 non-fundraising<br />

months to conduct our hands-on assistance to<br />

these housing related charities. For example,<br />

we could be helping Habitat for Humanity<br />

with a home construction project or LINK and<br />

their winter homeless shelter program. Our<br />

first event will be working with the Food Bank<br />

in Poquoson on <strong>January</strong> 23rd at 9 AM. Come<br />

on out to support a great cause and wear<br />

clothes suitable for getting dirty.<br />
