PERSONAL STATEMENT 

Creativity is a powerful skill, an intriguing 

ability evolving from our originalities and 

personal perspective. 

Winston Churchill once mentioned, “we 

shape our building, thereafter, they shape 

us”. Personally, I strongly believed that 

these buildings personify and embody the 

diverse cultures that exist today in the society, 

reflecting the power and endless potential 

of man’s creation. 

It is my passion for architecture that acts as 

a catalyst for inspiration and therefore provides 

me with a prominent sense of ambition 

and desire. 

Pursuing architecture studies has given me 

the opportunity to learn to appreciate the 

aesthetic beauty of buildings in the world 

today. The insightful demonstration has allowed 

my passion to evolve further, hence 

determining my ambition to be an architect. 

I believe that as an architect, my creative 

potential will be challenged. As an effect, 

architecture is a potent, influential force in 

my life that has given me a sense of living 

meaning. I agree with the ideology that an 

individual will rarely exceed his own expectation, 

however, architecture installs in me 

a belief that I can achieve and reach higher 

target, therefore acting as a foundation for 

my success and fulfilment in the future.

The given site is located at the central of Chow Kit, in 

close proximity to the Chow Kit Monorial Staion. Chow Kit 

is a district in central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, known for 

its vibrant community, markets, as well as a famous 

tourist area due to its rich history. However, it is still 

infamous for prostitution, drug addicts and homelessness. 

The architectural programme proposed aim to create a 

safe haven for the people who need a helping hand in their 

living.

The proposed programme for this Architectural Design Project 

is a Women Shelter names Chow Kit Women Empowering 

Centre, which aims to give a helping hand to the women 

around Chow Kit, as well as those that needs help outside 

Chow Kit area. This programme is to help the women who are 

intend to get away from being a sex worker, drug addicts, or 

even being abused, physically or mentally, by people around 

them.

The word “Empowering” is used as the name of the centre, 

representing that the programme is helping the women 

by providing them a place to stay, skills learning and 

job opportunities - equip, prepare and lead them back 

to the path of a healthy life and get rid of the painful 

experience of the past. 

This programme is proposed with the aim to change the 

community of Chow Kit, as well as the perception of the 

public towards women who are in the sex workers field. 

Being infamous of prostitution, drug addicts and homelessness, 

Chow Kit is a strategic location to set up such 

programme so that it can maximise the out-reach of the public.

Building block nearer to noise source can be lower down as the noise 

comes from the top 

Prevailing Wind Direction 

Building orientation to face the prevailing wind at the same time allows 

permeability of wind across the building 

Exposed To Sun 

Building upper floors to be elevated as a shading to lower floor, orientation 

of building to decrease exposed facade to West sun 

Social Psychology Of Target Users 

Private entrances prodives for women users to approach or enter the 

building in a convenient and safe way

Spatial Zoning 

Ground floor are designed as the public 

space, while the upper floors are only for 

the women. This allows easy control of 

circulation in the building.

be away from Monorail Station to 

reduce noise.

right block of the building. 

Private entrances are 

created for women users in 

order to protect their safetiness.

By creating landscape in the middle of 

the site, that makes the building a node 

in the intersection of Chow Kit.

according to the main road circulation 

which allows the vehicle to be able to

With the site located in the central of Kuala Lumpur 

heritage zone, the concept of Straits Shophouses is 

reinterpreted into regenerating the urban live of the site. 

Bringing the backlane and street culture into the building, 

conserving the burned facade, it is aimed to create a 

traditional versus contemporary architecture in this 

project.

It can be seen that although there is a diversity of activities 

around the site, there is no urban market available for 

the people on site. Furthermore, the people around the 

site are mostly hawker and office staffs, it is a potential 

idea for a fusion or urban market and daily product supply 

for them.

SHOPHOUSE TYPOLOGY 

Referencing from the surrounding 

buildings on site, the old shophouses are 

well maintained and it serves the sense 

of place along Jalan Tun HS Lee. 

Therefore, the building elements of 

shophouses are reinterpreted and are 

recreated in a modern way for the 

building design.


BACKLANE, ACCESSIBLE TO MARKET STALL


Preparation Circulation 

During the night, the market area is in the preparation for business 

for the next morning. The backlane and the front door will 

be used as the entrance for the vendors, while the side entrance 

will be oppened for public to access the upper levels. 

Interior Circulation 

The circulation remains as a circular direction that surrounds 

the central courtyard. This is intended to provide more permeability 

to all spaces inside the building instead of having a 

straight linear pathway. 

Old & New (Symbolism by materials) 

Brick masonary wall and expended wire mesh is used in order 

to create the sense of old and new in the building. 

Shophouse Typology 

The courtyard element in the traditional chinese shophouses is 

reinterpreted and is applied into the building design. The courtyard 

with large skylight also provides natural sunlight into the 

building. 

Connectivity of 

Street to Backlane 

The side part of the building connects the front street directly 

to the backlane, in order to create permeability.

Usage of Backlane 

The market activity is designed to extend out the backlane so 

that people can still access the building from the backlane. 

Market stalls are designed to open towards the backlane in order 

to bring the deadly backlane some vibrancy. 

Connectivity in the Building 

The central courtyard allows the users to interact and be 

connected visually no matter which part of the building 

they are at. 

Morning - Night Activities 

The space are arrange according to the time-lapse of the activities 

carried out in each space. The market will be operating 

during the day, while the food stalls shall act as the supporting 

programme so that the building will also be used during the 

evening. 

Ventilation 

Stack ventilations is applied in the building, as the hot air 

will rise and escape through the open skylight above the 

central courtyard. 

Cleaning & Drainage System 

Building cleaning and waste water drainage is crucial in the 

design of an urban market. Therefore, drainage is properly arranged 

in order to make sure that the building will not smell 

unpleasant and is easy to be cleaned after operating hours. 

Building Skyline 

The upper floor of the building is set back in order to not disturb 

the front facade of the building. Also, the building height 

follow the decend increase in height as it goes from left to 

right of the street.

Given the selected site in Porto Di Mare, Milano, 

a masterplan layout is designed according to the site 

condition which is diversified between urban development 

as well as argicultural land used in Milano. 

Taking the history of the site as a port, river source 

is reintroduced to the site and the urban 

living is designed.
