Spanish 5 - Border Studies and<br />

Special Topics in Latin American<br />

Culture<br />

Grade 12<br />

This class explores the concept of creating<br />

and negotiating borders between countries,<br />

cultures, and languages. Students engage<br />

in a series of readings related to the history<br />

and politics of immigration between<br />

Latin America and the United States.<br />

Students interview an immigrant, prepare<br />

a transcript, and then present it to the<br />

class. Students travel to the border at El<br />

Paso, where they have the opportunity to<br />

speak with advocates for the immigrant<br />

community, immigration agents, and<br />

hear powerful testimony from people<br />

who have been deported back to Mexico.<br />

Students develop a broader understanding<br />

of all of the social, cultural, economic,<br />

and political complexities immigration<br />

presents. Students also participate in<br />

Modelo Naciones Unidas Version en<br />

Español (Spanish Model United Nations).<br />

This is one of the first of its kind conducted<br />

in the United States and includes a diverse<br />

group of schools in a conference hosted<br />

at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.<br />

Students learn the language of diplomacy<br />

to advocate for countries and policies with<br />

Spanish speakers.<br />

independent and confident skills as a<br />

learner and user of Chinese in a Chinese<br />

speaking environment. Students will read<br />

authentic texts covering various aspects of<br />

Chinese society, culture, politics, literature,<br />

students’ knowledge of grammar and<br />

vocabulary and will develop skills in both<br />

written and spoken Chinese.<br />

Mandarin 4<br />

Prerequisite: Mandarin Chinese III or<br />

equivalent experience<br />

Mandarin Chinese 4 builds on the<br />

knowledge students have gained over the<br />
