Video Wall Solution Delivers
Creative Canvas for Calgary Girls’ School

A
n all-female public charter school in Calgary, Alberta for grades
4 to 9, Calgary Girls’ School (CGS) was looking to upgrade
the aesthetics of a large, centrally located open space in the
approximately 57-year-old school building. Initial plans called for a
dynamic colored light display behind glass. While appealing to look
at, this approach fell short of the school’s forward-thinking focus
on research-driven best practices and providing a collaborative,
inquiry-based learning environment. This prompted Director of
Technology, Joel Melashenko, to recommend a display-based option
for this prominent hallway.
“Most of the student population walks through this area every
day,” said Melashenko. “We realized that we could be a bit more
innovative by using the dynamic power of displays to show student
work, art, projects and so much more, while still accomplishing the
aesthetic goals.”
Back-to-School
Shopping for New Video Wall
Melashenko reached out to the school’s reseller partner of over 15
years for recommendations for the video wall, as well as to fulfill
the school’s need for a few large interactive classroom displays.
The reseller brought ViewSonic to the table as an outstanding
source for both.
“He recommended ViewSonic CDE4600-L 46-inch displays for the
wall and two CDE7051-TL 70-inch ViewSonic ViewBoard ® interactive
displays (mounted on the LB-STND-003 & WMK-047) for the
classrooms,” said Melashenko. “We haven’t looked back since. We’re
very happy with all our ViewSonic products.”
Generously funded by the CGS Parent Counsel, the dramatic 2x6
matrix was deployed with each monitor connected to Raspberry Pi
and Apple TV, seamlessly networked for phenomenal flexibility.
“With this configuration, we can use the displays individually or
spread one HD image or content stream across four displays at a
time,” said Melashenko.

Engage Students and Teachers
Shortly after launching the wall, the school hosted a conference for
Alberta charter schools, attended by some 600 teachers. The wall
was a hot topic of conversation.
“We displayed student content as well as a school floor map
and conference schedule, and received an incredible amount of
positive feedback,” said Melashenko. “It was the first time most
of them had seen something like that in a school and people were
just mesmerized.”

Concurrent with the successful installation of the ViewSonic
video wall, CGS found the 70-inch ViewBoard interactive displays to
be an ideal solution to meet the school’s need for large, interactive
displays that could be cart-mounted for mobile convenience.
