The France-based water specialist can also advise<br />

companies that specialise in developing new eco-friendly<br />

solutions for disinfecting water and other fluids to help<br />

them identify the most active compounds and determine<br />

dose-response curves for managing biological<br />

contamination.<br />

The UK P&I Club’s Madlene Wangrau has raised the<br />

emergent issue of biofouling, providing an explanation as to<br />

how shipowners and crew can benefit by reducing the risk<br />

of transferring alien aquatic species by way of the ship’s<br />

hull.<br />

“The introduction of invasive aquatic species (IAS)<br />

associated with global shipping has been identified as a<br />

significant threat to the world’s oceans and coastal<br />

ecosystems. Research suggests that 70-80% of IAS<br />

introductions occur through biofouling, and new areas are<br />

constantly being invaded.”<br />

Wangrau added: “Biofouling is undesirable<br />

accumulation of various aquatic organisms<br />

(microorganisms, plants, algae and animals) on submerged<br />

structures like ships’ hulls. This process can lead to the<br />

introduction of invasive aquatic species (IAS) into new<br />

environments.”<br />

Marine species establish a reproductive population in<br />

the host environment, becoming invasive, out-competing<br />

native species and multiplying into pest proportion. The<br />

problem has intensified over the last few decades due to<br />

increasing volume of traffic on our seas and represents a<br />
