And not only cruiseships of course; similar issues exist in many other sectors of the industry.” MOORING ASIA’S FIRST E-FERRY PLUGS INTO CAVOTEC Cavotec’s ship charging technology has connected Asia’s first e-ferry to electrical power, eliminating emissions and dramatically reducing operating costs. The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, entered service last year. The battery powered vessel follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. Cavotec supplied a charging solution to ensure safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth. The solution included a cable reel, cable and plug, and a socket box onboard the ferry. The Kaohsiung city municipality plans to retrofit the rest of its diesel fleet to “reduce pollution levels around Taiwan’s largest harbour. “We’re seeing growing interest in plug-in and charging technologies for e-ferries and hybrids in Asia and beyond, together with a high demand for our shore power equipment at major ports, which clearly indicates a strong trend on emissions reduction initiatives,” said Gustavo Miller, President of Cavotec’s Ports & Maritime division. ROPES LANKONECT TRANSFORMS TOWING Maritime ropes supplier Lankhorst Ropes has introduced a new synthetic fibre rope connection for the main tow line that replaces a conventional cow hitch, shackle or similar hardware, providing tug operators with a quicker and safer connection during towing. A typical tow line configuration comprises a main towing line with a forerunner, and perhaps a stretcher, as well as a cow hitch or connector hardware. This arrangement risks a break in the costly main line and forerunner from overpulling, according to the manufacturer of the new Lankonect system. 12
This enables a new approach to tow line assembly by removing the need for a cow hitch knot or hardware. It also allows tug operators to set a calculated breaking force for the tow line configuration. Lankonect is also claimed to result in minimal chance of damage to other components such as the towing bit and winch onboard the tug boat or ship bollard. By allowing a variable calculated breaking force to be set for the tow line – the Lankonect can be either the strongest connection or a calculated weak link in a towing configuration. During development, the Lankonect was subjected to rigorous field trials. "In the short time that we have been using the Lankonect, the benefits are clearly visible to us. The ease of use and thus indirectly the safety for the crew is striking," said Jan Busscher, Group procurement manager, Smit Lamnalco. The Lankonect connection works with a wide range of synthetic materials including lightweight, high strength Dyneema (Lankoforce) and polyester (Strongline). It offers a greater range of connection options than for traditional tow line configurations. “It is a significant breakthrough in the way in which tug operators can now configure their tow line configuration to maximise the tow, yet reduce the risks of costly damage to the line itself,” said Hans-Pieter Baaij, commercial director, Lankhorst Ropes. CABLES NEW FIRESTOP FOR CABLE BUNDLES In order to meet demand for efficient firestops for entire cable bundles, cable and pipe transit specialist Roxtec has introduced the GK Multi-cable fire collar. “This fire collar is designed for use in entries with high cable density in decks and bulkheads in fire rated divisions above the waterline,” said Roger Johansson, Executive Vice President and Business Area Manager Marine & Offshore at Roxtec. “It is certified to A-60 marine fire rating and easy to use when you want to ensure protection onboard ships and vessels.” The GK Multi-cable fire collar is tested according to type approval test guidelines as well as to SOLAS/IMO regulations, and it is both RoHs and REACH compliant. It is quick, easy and safe to use with multiple cables, entire cable bundles and busbars. “It is cost-efficient thanks to its great fill ratio and since you do not have to separate any bundled cables,” said Johansson. VALVES COMPACT GAS VALVE TRAIN FOR SAFER PROPULSION For a long time, the use of natural gas for ship propulsion was considered very impractical compared to heavy fuel oil. The risks of leakage and lack of space for the required infrastructure seemed too great. In the meantime, shipowners and operators of tankers, FPSO systems, cruise giants and other ships with dual-fuel boilers are now increasingly investing in the clean fuel. On the one hand, this is attributable to tightened emission guidelines, and on the other hand to falling prices and increasingly intelligent technical solutions for 13
