CICM Law Conference 2017

THE event was hosted by Neil
Jinks, Client Development
Director of DWF and David
Scottow, Senior Director and
National Head of Recoveries
who also chaired.
The conference brought together
expert speakers from DWF and other
firms covering advocacy, data protection,
insolvency and other areas who explained
how the legal landscape has changed over
the last 12 months and the impact on credit
managers.
The theme for the conference was “All
Change” focusing on recent changes and
topics covered included:
• The Pre Action Protocol for Debt
Claims
• Advocacy and Civil Court Updates
• Debt Recovery through the Scottish
Courts
• Proposed fixed costs regime for debt
litigation
• General Data Protection Regulations
(GDPR)
• New Rules for starting insolvency
processes
David Scottow welcomed the members
attending and gave an introduction to set
the scene.
Jeff Gledhill, Legal & Operations
Manager of DWF covered the Pre-Action
Protocol for Debt Claims, 2 months in.
Michael Javaherian of LPC Law and his
colleague presented a mock trial involving
the Pre-Action Protocol for Debt Claims,
which was well received by the audience
and also gave an insight into working in the
civil courts.
Susan McGinlay, Lead Paralegal of DWF
Recoveries in Scotland covered the new
simple procedure in Scotland and took
questions on debt litigation in Scotland.
James Perry, Director Technical of the
DWF Recoveries team covered Lord Justice
Jackson's proposed fixed-costs regime in
such an entertaining way to make the
subject matter easier for the audience to
digest.
DWF Partner, John Benjamin, an expert
in privacy and data protection laws, gave
an update on GDPR which was very well
received by the audience.
The final speaker of the day was Jeremy
Willmont of Moore Stephens who covered
the new rules for starting insolvency
processes. Moore Stephens is also a
Corporate Partner to CICM.
The conference ended with a question
and answer session involving all speakers
and a conclusion by David Scottow. The
event was very well received by the
delegates who showed a lot of interest and
enthusiasm and raised many questions.

hopefully more members will join us at
the 2018 conference.

My own conclusion having listened to
all of the speakers is that there is always
room for professional support when
it comes to such matters. Instructing
professionals can reduce the risk of things
going wrong and help to achieve the
desired result in the most efficient way.
Using the right professionals will ensure
that you can do so cost effectively and
compliantly.
