Message From
GMD
Welcome to the December Issue
of the Ali & Sons Access Point
Magazine.
For our year ender newsletter, I
can say this a very interesting
issue. It features many activities
and updates of Ali & Sons
business units with various photos
in the following pages.
One of the highlights of this
newsletter is the introduction of
the company’s E-learning
Program. The program was
introduced to an initial number of
employees. The HR team carefully
evaluated the participants who
can join as well as the different
modules that they can enroll in for
a period of one year. I am quite
happy that in the end it gained
good results. Despite of the
participants’ busy schedule, 14 of
them managed to finish the 40
modules and that is something
quite impressive.
In another subject, I would say
that the market in the Middle
East is challenging but that did
not stop the Ali & Sons
Management and Staff to work
harder than usual to achieve
their targets. I am talking about
the contracts being awarded,
strategic partnerships, successful
completion of projects, on track
project timelines and new
project initiatives. Even the
implementation of the Value
Added Tax in 2018 did not stop
the Ali & Sons team in
accomplishing their goals.
I am inviting you to read this
quarter’s issue of our newsletter.
I assure you that it will be worth
your time reading it.
In this regard, I would like to
extend my appreciation to all
who contributed in making this
an interesting copy to read.
Wish you all a Happy New Year.
Ali & Sons introduces E-Career
Learning, 160 personnel handpicked
to take the program
The Ali & Sons management believes that successful business comes from competent and knowledgeable
workforce hence it introduced the E-Career Program.
160 personnel from head office and other business units/subsidiaries were carefully evaluated and
handpicked by the supervisors and managers to participate and take part in the program. The initiative
was available for one year up to August 2017. It has 40 courses in different modules. Included in the
NEWS & UPDATES
modules as supplements are online books of top-selling leadership and management books, engaging,
interactive courseware, hands-on simulations and a multitude of other solutions. The program is
designed to every user’s adaptability and busy lifestyle. The users can access the modules where and
when it is convenient for them, even at the comfort of their own homes at their own pace within a year.
Modules are also accessible on mobile phones and laptops 24/7.
Among all the subsidiaries and head office departments who participated, AS Motors – Volkswagen
has the most number of participants who completed the 40 courses of the program. It has been a
truly remarkable achievement! Mr. Ammar Johmani shared how he was able to encourage his team in
completing the E-learning Program.
“I have selected the most enthusiastic, eager-to-learn people from among my team to join this program.
I didn’t have to push them because they were already proactive in completing the courses. My only
contribution was encouraging them to check each and every course and complete them even if it’s not
their expertise. I also gave advices such as trying to learn something different and getting out of their
comfort zones, test and check a different environment - in this case different courses. I guess it all paid
off since AS Motors – Volkswagen has the most number of participants who completed the 40 courses
of the program”, said Mr. Ammar Johmani, GM – Volkswagen.
“Ali & Sons always looks after the welfare of its employees and committed to its well-being. The E-Career
Academy is an instrument in helping the employees develop their skills, knowledge and talent. I want to
thank all the participants who joined and completed the program. I value their enthusiasm in taking part
in this company’s initiative. Additionally, I want to especially thank the Top Achievers of this program.
They are the group who completed the 40 courses offered in the program. Congratulations! There will
be more programs lined up on the E-Career Academy in the future. I’m encouraging everyone to take
proactive steps in ensuring their participation on these activities of the company. I want every employee
to grow and develop with the company and one way of achieving it is through active participation”,
said Mr. Shamis Al Dhaheri, GMD- Ali & Sons Holding.
Cash Management Solutions Successful Implementation in
Ali & Sons
Ali & Sons prepares for the VAT
starting January 2018
The first phase of the Cash Management
Solutions Module was recently implemented
successfully and currently operational following
the signing of the agreement between Ali &
Sons Holding Management (ASH) and Abu
Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) Team in the
3rd quarter of 2017.
“Congratulations and well done for being
able to complete the project in a timely
manner. This is certainly a recognizable
achievement for all. It is a great milestone
for the company as well especially for
Ali & Sons Motors Division. The cutting
edge technology of the module will make
transactions a breeze for everyone including
Ali & Sons’ clients. I would like to thank all
the members of the team that helped make
this happen. The completion and execution
of the project would have not been made
possible without each member taking time
and proactively working for its success.”
said Mr. Shamis Al Dhaheri, Ali & Sons
Group Managing Director.
The features of the systems that makes it unique
and innovative are: Online international and
local credit transfers | Liquidity Management |
Multi bank Reporting System | Cash & Cheque
Pick Up Service | Post-Date Cheque Management
| Cheque Scanning | Payment Gateway | Cheque
Printing with Digital Signature.
Having the system up and running will make
the bank processing for Ali & Sons and its
customers more convenient. The initiative was
led by Mr. Farhan Ahmed, Project Manager of
the Cash Management Module with the full
support of the Ali & Sons Steering Committee
(Mr. Shamis Al Dhaheri & Mr. Atef Ashour), IT
Team (Mr. Amuthan, Mr. Tariq and Mr. Vijay)
and Business Process Owner (Mr. Abraham - AS
Motors). They were all instrumental in making
the first phase of the project successful.
The Value Added Tax (VAT) is a very broad based Tax that applies to supplies of both goods and
services that consumers and commercial business pay to their suppliers. The business units must
also collect VAT on their supply of goods and services to others. In most cases the businesses
will be able to reclaim the tax paid on supplies and offset that tax against VAT that is collected
from its customer.
The training was focused on specific provisions of the law and rules in the UAE to properly
comply with the new laws. Deloitte kindly assisted Ali & Sons and its business units through
four separate VAT Awareness Training Sessions conducted during the week of 10 December 2017
so everyone involved will be ready for the new VAT in the UAE effective for transactions occurring
on 1 January 2018 and thereafter. Other member states within the UAE will also be required to
implement the VAT system. The VAT in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was also carried out starting
1 January 2018 while the remaining Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members must implement
VAT prior to 1 January 2019.
All the VAT sessions were well attended by the representatives throughout the Ali & Sons and its
subsidiaries. Everyone was interested to learn how VAT can impacts the different businesses of
the company.
Marine Engineering Factory (ASMEF)
ASMEF gets Petrofac contract in SAJAA Plant for site
construction works
Petrofac awarded a contract to Ali & Sons Marine Engineering (ASMEF) for site works in Sajaa Gas
Plant operated by Sharjah National Oil Company (SNOC).
The Sajaa Gas Plant, operated by Sharjah National Oil Company (SNOC) is located at the Sajaa
capacity of 700 MMSCFD with associated condensate and water is situated.
The project entails the design and construction of all facilities related to the storage of LPG in bullet
tanks and blending facility of LPG. The blended LPG product will be finally exported by loading them
to trucks and transporting it by land to SEWA and local markets.
SNOC’s main EPC contractor Petrofac appointed ASMEF as the construction contractor for the
complete project for the civil, structural, piping, heavy mechanical equipment installation, electrical
& instrumentation, demolition/relocation/modification works, HSSE installations, pre-commissioning
and commissioning.
Gulf Navigation has announced a potential strategic partnership with Ali & Sons Marine Engineering
Factory (ASMEF) in Abu Dhabi on 25 October 2017 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The said potential
partnership is for Oil & Gas, Offshore Services, Ship Repairs and Marine Services which aims to expand
and develop business and help strengthen the national maritime economy.
Construction works has already commenced. It is expected that project will be handed over after
commissioning within the 8 month project duration. The project executed in a brownfield where
there is zero tolerance for international HSE standards.
According to HE Khamis Juma Buamin, Board Member, Managing Director and Group CEO of Gulf
Navigation Holding, “Our new strategy targets collaborating with the leading national companies in
the UAE, in line with our wise leadership’s vision to establish a national maritime industrial cluster that
will position the UAE amongst the world’s most important maritime centers. We are proud with our
partnership with “Ali & Sons Marine Engineering Factory” that is considered one of the leading oil and
gas and maritime services companies in the region.”
Shamis Al Dhaheri, Group Managing Director of Ali & Sons Holding highlighted the importance of this
partnership, “After we have witnessed the outstanding financial and the administrative performance
of “Gulf Navigation Holding” over the past two years, we have selected this company to inaugurate
a partnership specialized in oil and gas and maritime services. We have considered Gulf Navigation’s
international reach and its management expertise in facing the challenges and transforming them into
opportunities in the maritime sectors.”
Al Dhaheri added, at Ali & Sons, we are looking for this kind of efficiency to proceed with our success
and develop the business we started since decades. We believe that gathering the national companies’
capabilities is our guarantee to expand globally and to
strengthen the UAE’s position as a key player in the oil and gas
industry and the international maritime services.”
Moreover, “Gulf Navigation Holding” is launching this
partnership with “Ali & Sons Marine Engineering Factory”
concurrently with issuing Sukuk according to the Islamic law
with a total value of 250 million dollar, in order to finance its
expansion plans, diversify its investments portfolio and upsurge
profits. This step will position the maritime sector as one of
the prime investments sectors that surpasses the traditional
investment sectors such as, Real Estate and services. - Marasi News
MANHOURS WITHOUT LTI & ZERO TRIR
Ali & Sons Marine Engineering Factory (ASMEF) ended year 2017 with a
Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0. Coincidentally, around the same
time ASMEF had also reached a significant milestone of THREE MILLION
manhours without any Lost Time Incident (LTI).
The two important achievements were accomplished by the commitment
to HSE of each and every team member of ASMEF. These people have
been the key to this success. Mohsen El Sherif, ASMEF Acting General
Manager stated, “I want to acknowledge the efforts of the ASMEF team.
Reaching this number is not easy but it was made possible because of
everyone’s discipline and hard work, and ensuring safety is at the forefront
of everything we do. Well done! Let’s continue this excellent attitude
and putting into practice and thinking Safety First in everything we do.
Congratulations to all of us.”
The aim of both ASMEF and Lifecare Hospital is to ensure continued good health among its
For the first time, Ruwaya took part in one of the
biggest Art Exhibition in the Middle East “Dubai
Design Week” in November 2017 at the Dubai
Design District, Dubai UAE.
It was a collaboration between a mother (Fatima
Al Dhaheri) & a daughter (Shamsa Al Dhaheri) to
create an exceptional installation piece “The
Fronds of Our Remains.”
Both Fatima and Shamsa having the same
connection and appreciation, each one of them
translated their vison to the palm tree in a different
way, Fatima through jewellery and Shamsa through
art.
Inspired by one another, their pieces converse with
each other in the same space creating an interesting
dialogue.
The palm tree is a rich symbol for commenting on
transformations in the UAE. It was once a tool of
survival and living, now transformed into a
decorative prop or ornament and is not what it is
used for today.
A vital material that symbolizes the significant
progression in UAE, and stands in stark contrast
to the palm, is plastics and metallic elements.
Using wood acrylic plastic and yarn sourced from
palm trees, Shamsa created her piece using light
resulting in abstract and organic shadows on the
floor allowing visitor to interact with the piece.
The Palm Tree Experience allows the visitor to feel
as if they are walking under palm trees being
comforted by its shadows.
The installation is a synthetic interpretation of a
palm tree that feels as much like a sleek building
as it does an organic form. Buildings and
skyscrapers have been mass-produced in the
UAE, springing up almost overnight. The UAE
was able to achieve what many countries took
hundreds of years to realize within a short
timespan. Although the dramatic change in an
extremely short period of time is undeniably
amazing. The piece emphasizes the struggle we
are facing as a community, which is finding a
new balance in this clash of old and new.
The installation revolves around the conversations
between the parallel identities of the self and of
the culture in relation to modernization. It leads
one to question whether there is a possibility of
these two concepts living harmoniously together.
