HERB GARDENS
The calendar says it is winter but in Houston that means that spring is
peeking around the corner of our gardens. The Landscape Committee is
still looking for a chair or co-chairs to manage the herb garden at Desert
Ivy Park. A volunteer has stepped forward to oversee the garden at Park
Cypress. Carole Yard will still advise as needed. The beds at Park Cypress
will be a combination of summer herbs and sensory plants to attract
butterflies, birds and bees. This type of planting at Desert Ivy provided
children and adults the opportunity to watch nature close up.
Can’t wait until spring to plant the new crop of delicious herbs.
PARK MONITORS NEEDED
We are in need of park monitors for a few of our parks. It takes 15 minutes,
once a month to check the park and report back any issues. Please contact
Kristie Poldervaart at poldervaartk@gmail.com or 281-647-9483 if you are
interested in volunteering.
VACATION WATCH FORM
Don’t forget when you are going on vacation to fill out a vacation watch
form with the constables. You can find the form at www.constablepct5.
com/vacation-watch.
MOSQUITO CONTROL
Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito
Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program
includes removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these
problem areas:
1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths which can hold
dampness or water
2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters
3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles
around house.
4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes
after watering, you are over watering.
5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray
under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain.
Plastic under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.
FIREWORKS PROHIBITED IN GREEN TRAILS PHASE II
Fireworks are a violation of the deed restrictions for the Association of
Green Trails Phase II. You may report violations of this deed restriction
to Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or Heather.Esteban@crestmanagement.com.
When reporting a violation of the deed restrictions
you must provide a description of the violation and the address of the
home where the violation exist.
SECURITY TIPS
If you see something suspicious, call the constable at 281-463-6666.
Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert
neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it.
Park your cars in your driveway and lock them.
Keep doors and windows locked (including garages) and alarms set. Trim
shrubs so windows are visible. If you are going to be out of town, turn in a
Vacation Watch Form. Use timers on lights. See our website for other tips.
SHORT TERM RENTALS NOT ALLOWED
Please be aware that short-term rentals of rooms or entire properties are
a violation of deed restrictions.
HAVE A DESIRE TO BE PART OF SOMETHING BIG?
The Green Trails HOA has an amazing opportunity for volunteers to be
part of the newly developing I-10 and Fry Rd. beautification project.
Come be a part of this great adventure to help keep our community a
thriving, beautiful, top place to live in the Katy area. This volunteer team
will help an already chosen landscape architect develop and maintain
the landscaping framework for the I-10 and Fry Rd intersection and turn
this area into a beautiful entry point into the surrounding community
that leads into the Green Trails subdivision. The landscape architect
has completed the plans and work will begin this fall. Future projects
are expected at the intersections of I-10 and Green House as well as I-10
and Barker Cypress; future dates are TBD based on the success of the
first intersection. If you are interested, please
contact Heather Esteban at Crest management,
281-579-0761 or heather.esteban@crestmanagement.com,
to apply for this position.
You will be contacted by the responsible Green
Trails Board member in charge of this project for
a briefing of the first scheduled meeting for this
committee.
DON’T MISS THIS HUGE COMMUNITY UPLIFTING!
DOGGIE DON’TS
Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a
leash and picking up after your pets. We thank
you!
HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog
owners allowing their dogs to defecate and
urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in
high-traffic areas near park entrances. Be aware
that it is not just your dog. Once a yard has
been “used,” other dogs want to do so as well.
A resident should not have to pick up after even
one dog, much less ten. In addition, runners
and walkers in our parks don’t enjoy dodging
excrement. Please carry a bag and pick up after
your pet.
Remember also, that even the sweetest dog
may seem intimidating to some people. Respect
their rights and comply with leash laws.
TRASH PICKUP REMINDER
This is a reminder that Green Trails offers back
door trash pickup. Please put your household
garbage in front of your garage door for pickup
outside of the breezeway fence. Heavy trash and
recyclables must be taken to the curb for pickup.
Do Not Put Trash Out the Night Before Pickup
Please put your trash out the morning of trash
pickup. If you put your trash out the night before
trash pickup this allows cats and other animals
to be able to get into your trash causing a mess
on the street for the trash collection workers or
yourself to deal with.
STREET LIGHT OUTAGES
Please note that the association pays electrical
charges for a streetlight whether the bulb is
functioning or not. To report street light outages
you can contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-
2222 or www.centerpointenergy.com. Be sure to
note the pole number and the street address.
HOME IMPROVEMENT REMINDER
Remember, ALL exterior changes made to your
home or yard [including your fence] require
Architectural Review Committee approval first.
In need of an Exterior Modification Request
form? Go to www.greentrailstwo.com our
neighborhood website.
NO CALL IS TOO SMALL
Call the Constable to report any suspicious
activity. The fastest dispatch for Green Trails is
via their direct line at 281-463-6666. If something
“doesn’t seem right,” don’t wait to be sure. Trust
your intuition, call it in and let them decide. You
are our best defense.
Hats off to the lifeguard staff at Park Cypress
Pool who received honors during A Beautiful
Pools emergency testing week. Lifeguards were
surprised with a real life scenario with real
people being “victims.” While all teams did well
and were “rescue ready,” the Park Cypress team
was cited as a top performer.
CONTRACTOR COMMUNICATION
Too many bosses - not a good idea. Our
contractors have instructions to take direction
from our management company, Board and
committee chairs only. If you see something
you think is a problem, please contact Crest
Management. We will resolve it as quickly as
possible.
REMOVE VALUABLES, LOCK CARS
Thanks to a resident’s timely call, the constables
made an arrest in connection to car burglaries.
However we need to continue common
sense security practices. Note that 90% of
the car burglaries in the neighborhood were
of unlocked cars. Lock your cars and remove
valuables. Report any burglaries, even if only
items of minimal value were taken.
PAINTED CONCRETE
No concrete that is visible from any street,
whether a driveway, sidewalk, patio or other
improvement, shall be painted or stained any
color.
Concrete that is not visible from any street may
be painted or stained only with ARC approval.
PAVILION RELEASE FORM
To reserve a park pavilion, please contact Crest
Management at 281-579-7061.
REMINDER FOR GATED SECTIONS
Please remember that entry codes are for the
use of residents ONLY. Please ask guests and / or
contractors to utilize the gate directory to obtain
access. If contact information in the directory
needs to be updated, please contact Crest
Management and provide information.
WEBSITE AND EBLAST INFO
The Website for Green Trails Phase II (www.
greentrailstwo.com) has a “blast email” function.
This feature allows the Association to send
news to residents on a mass basis. The Board of
Directors intends to start utilizing this function
more frequently to disseminate important
information, particularly in emergencies like
Hurricane Ike. If you have not registered and
would like to do so, please go to the “Join Our
Mailing List” section of the Website. The only
information that you need to enter is your email
address. Each of the other items is optional,
including your name. None of the information
will be distributed to third parties.
HOME SECURITY INSPECTIONS
Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is
offering free home inspections.
Why is this beneficial? You can save 5-10% on
your homeowner’s insurance, depending on
your carrier.
How does it work? You schedule a time for our
officers to come by and make simple suggestions
on how to better secure your home.
To participate contact Deputy John Jerome
Kovar. Call one of two direct lines: 281-642-8814
or 979-733-7734. Or email him at john.kovar@
cn5.hctx.net.
To reach our dispatch call 281-463-6666. Visit
GREEN TRAILS
NEW LIGHTS
We have installed a new timer switch on the Crescent Green courts on the
south side of court 1. The timer has a button, which cycles through 15,
30, 45, 60 & 120 minutes and OFF. The lights on the pole on the south side
between courts 1 and 2 will act as a safety light. There is a timer switch on
the light pole as you enter the court on Park Cypress.
The lights will remain off until you activate these switches. The lights will
come on instantly.
COURT RESERVATIONS
Court Reservation signup sheets are posted on the bulletin boards at
both the Crescent Green and Park Cypress courts. Residents must use
last names only. Residents may reserve a court no sooner than 48 hours
in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period only by writing their last name
on 3 blocks of the signup sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes). If
your match extends beyond your reserved time period and no one else is
waiting to use the court, you are free to continue playing. These rules are
posted on the bulletin boards and are designed to allow maximum court
usage for all residents.
For safety reasons, tennis activities using a basket of balls are not permitted
during prime time on the Crescent Green courts. Multiple balls lying on the
courts is a safety hazard for others using the courts. Prime hours are every
day, 8-10:30 AM and 6-9 PM. The court on Park Cypress is a single court on
which multiple balls lying on the ground is not a hazard to others. If you
want to use a basket of balls, reserve the court on Park Cypress.
Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time
or to reserve the courts for a SPECIAL event in advance, must contact the
tennis committee for approval through Greg Kubala, 281-507-6343 or Jim
Haylett, 281-795-3552.
These policies are in place to ensure safe, fair and equal access for all
residents desiring to use of our courts. Individuals not adhering to this
signup policy can have their names removed from the signup sheet by
members of the tennis committee. In addition, FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH
AND ADHERE TO THE POSTED GREEN TRAILS TENNIS COURT POLICIES
CAN RESULT IN DEACTIVATION OF YOUR CARD KEY FOR ONE MONTH. If a
committee member speaks to you about a violation and you still do not
comply with these guidelines, your access card could be deactivated for
one month.
LEAGUE TENNIS:
Ladies HLTA and WHLTA tennis leagues are approved to play on Mondays
and Wednesdays in the Fall and Spring from 9 AM-12 PM. Currently there
is a A-2 team playing on Monday and Championship and a A-3 teams
playing on Wednesday. Our league rosters are currently full but if you are
interested in playing ladies league tennis contact Elaine Kearney to get on
a wait list for the following season, 281-492-6848.
MISCELLANOUS
ACCESS CARDS: New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can
contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents
only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used
and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the
gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card.
MAGNETIC GATE: Please do not keep the gate open by hindering its
closure with an item. This causes the automatic lock to malfunction.
VANDALISM: Your yearly maintenance fees directly pay for vandalism on
the courts. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice
amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children
know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment,
the Constable will be called to escort them home. Anyone can report
vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep
our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition.
Engagement Stories
featuring your neighbors!
Chelsea & William
What was supposed to be a family vacation to Las Vegas/the Grand Canyon
the week before Thanksgiving, ended up turning into the most picture
perfect proposal. The morning we were supposed to leave for the Grand
Canyon, I wasn’t feeling well, and said I would stay back. However, William
was very insistent that I come. I took some medicine, got ready really
quickly, and we hopped into the car for our grand excursion. When we got
to the Grand Canyon, it was freezing outside (to Texans of course!) and
there was even some snow on the ground. It looked so magical (especially
considering I have only seen snow a couple of times)! As I was getting out
of the car, I noticed that one of my fake nails had fallen off (I had gotten my
nails done the week prior) ON MY LEFT HAND! William’s mother had
asked, “what hand did the nail fall off from?”, which I thought was a funny
question to ask. When we got to the Grand Canyon, we stopped to take
pictures (and get me a jacket because I did NOT plan for freezing weather).
During one picture, William had bent down to sit for the picture, but in
my head I was thinking “THIS IS IT! THERE IS WHERE WE GET EN-
GAGED!” My heart started racing and I was so excited. But....all that was said was, “Chelsea, sit down so we can take the picture.” I was slightly disappointed,
but I wouldn’t let it ruin my time. We went to go grab a bite to eat, and William and his family were asking when sunset was so we could go to one final stop:
Yavapai Point. By the time we got there, I was freezing and felt like my hands and legs were going numb and was apprehensive to take more pictures. Then, in
the most perfect spot, right as we were posing for a picture, William got down on one knee and showed me the most beautiful ring that he picked out himself.
I didn’t even let him talk I was so in shock that I just went in for a giant hug. When his family asked what I said, I responded with, “oh he never asked!” He
officially asked, I said “YES!!!!!!!”, and the rest of our “grand” love story is history!
Lisa & Matt
My wife and I met on a blind date – we were immediately attracted
to each other. Later, when the time came, I wanted to have the
perfect way to propose to her, so I conspired with my mother to
create the ‘perfect day’. First, my sister, Rachel, took a picture
of me at our favorite place – Castlewood State Park outside of St.
Louis, Missouri. From this picture, a wooden jigsaw puzzle was
created – the largest piece in the center being a sign with my special
message… ‘Lisa, Will You Marry Me?’. The remaining pieces
of the puzzle were randomly divided into handmade velvet bags
that each had a handwritten calligraphy poem on them created
by me describing a new location for the ‘Treasure Hunt’. Each location
has some significance since it was a place where we had
experienced something special together. At the last location, I
presented her with the final piece and the diamond ring. My wife
is a very special person who has given me so much…I love her.
12
Violet & TJ
"They" say that after a storm, comes a rainbow....it turns out that "they"
are correct. I met my fiancé, TJ, about 20 years ago. Nothing became
of it, except seeing the familiar face from time to time throughout the
years. On July 15, I ran into the familiar face, yet once again. Except this
time, it was God's timing and we were engaged on September 16. He is
the biggest teddy bear with the kindest soul. He is the happily ever after
that me & daughters needed for so long.... We will say "I do" on 2/11/18.
FEBRUARY IS CREATIVE ROMANCE MONTH
February is being Creative Romance Month and many of you may feel like
that is a lot of pressure! Don’t worry though because we’ve put together a
list of romantic, yet creative ideas to make the month of February full of
romance.
Go On A Surprise Trip. What better way to spend time together than
by going on a surprise trip? Instead of just telling your partner that you
planned a getaway, make them work to figure out what their Valentine’s
present is. Write the name of the destination on a piece of paper and cut it
up into pieces that they have to put together. If you want to really build up
the anticipation, you can always give them one piece of the puzzle a day
leading up to Valentine’s Day.
Kidnap Them For A Day. If your partner is into fun gags, put a blindfold on
him or her and drive them to your chosen destination before you take the
blindfold off. It can be something as simple as a romantic dinner to their
favorite restaurant or a visit to their favorite museum. Tell them little clues
along the way to see if they can actually guess where they are going.
Act Like A Tourist. Just because you have lived in a city for a while it
doesn’t mean that you’ve visited everywhere there is to go. For Valentine’s
Day, do a little bit of research about restaurants or attractions that you
and your partner have never been to before. Then on Valentine’s Day, act
like tourists at the place you end up going too. Don’t just rush through the
experience. Really soak it all in, spend a lot of time there and just have a
good time overall.
Can’t Get Away For A Few Days? Book A Hotel Room. If you and your
partner want to go on a vacation, but don’t have the time, consider
booking a really nice hotel room for 1-2 nights. Even though you won’t
actually be leaving your city, it might feel like it if you choose the right
hotel. Not only should the hotel you choose have plenty of activities and
amenities, but it should be in a location that will allow you to easily enjoy
restaurants and shops within walking distance.
Share The Romance. If you and your partner are the kind of couple that
likes to outdo one another, consider trading off. On even days you could
plan romantic activities and on odd days it’s your partner’s turn. This can
last for only a few days, a week or the entire month of February! If you
really want to wow them consider going on a day cruise on your day or
going camping for the night.
TAX CUTS AND JOBS ACT
After years of Congress tinkering with the tax code, we have the
most sweeping set of tax law changes since 1986. The “postcard”
tax return we were promised still eludes us.
This does not change what you need to do to prepare your 2017
tax return. The new tax rules don’t take effect until 2018 or
later.
As I meet with my clients this tax season, we will be discussing
how the changes will apply. Far fewer individuals will itemize
deductions, but with the new lower tax rates, most really will find
that they will pay less tax than before.
For non-clients, I offer a one-time phone consultation to discuss
the tax changes and how they are likely to affect you. The cost is
$
95; to schedule one, just text, call, or email me.
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to
Lighter Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo
You could make this on National Fettuccine Alfredo Day February 7 th !
INGREDIENTS:
2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
4 cloves garlic, minced
ground black pepper to taste
2 cups heavy cream
2 egg yolks
salt to taste
1 pound fettuccine
1 sprig chopped fresh parsley
2 cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, divided
DIRECTIONS:
Combine chicken breasts and chicken broth in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to
a boil, cover and reduce heat to low; simmer for 5 minutes. Turn breasts, cover and simmer
another 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit with the cover on for 15 minutes.
Remove chicken breasts from the broth and set aside to cool, reserving the broth in the
saucepan. Once the chicken is cool enough to handle, cut into bite-size slices. Return the
chicken broth to medium heat and cook until reduced to 1 cup. Stir garlic, black pepper and
heavy cream into the reduced broth; bring to a simmer and remove from heat.
Whisk egg yolks in a bowl until smooth. Beat 1 tablespoon of the warm cream mixture
into the eggs until thoroughly incorporated; repeat until about 1/2 cup of the warm cream
mixture is used. Whisk the warm cream and egg mixture back into the saucepan with the
remaining cream mixture. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until the
mixture almost comes to a simmer and thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and
black pepper to taste.
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook fettuccine in boiling water, stirring
occasionally, until nearly cooked through, about 7 minutes. Drain.
Stir parsley, 1 cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano and cream mixture into the pasta. Remove from
heat, cover and let sit for a few minutes until thick.
Fold chicken and 1 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano into the pasta mixture to serve.
Family
Focus
Why They Love Living in Katy
“Our family has lived in Katy for over 30 years and we couldn’t imagine
our children growing up in a better city. Katy has the hometown feel of
the both small towns that Patrick and Melissa were born in. Patrick is
originally from Lumberton, Texas and Melissa was born in Hardinsburg,
Kentucky. People in Katy are friendly and always willing to lend a
helping hand to their neighbors. Katy is “country” with all the amenities
of the city and Houston is close enough that if you want to see a major
sporting event, concert, theater, etc., you are able to. We love the
people and pride in Tigerland!”
What They Love to Do
This family most enjoys the local parks
in Katy, feeding ducks and being in
the outdoors. They love to explore the
local businesses in Old Katy, especially
antique and resale shops where hidden
treasures are often found. The Katy
Rice Harvest Festival is one of their most
anticipated events of the year, as well
as the parade and the Katy Rodeo.
Love is in the Air
How They Express It: “Something you will hear many times a day in our home is one person will say
‘Love y’all’ and you will hear all the other family members reply with ‘Love y’all.’ Levi is usually the first
one to prompt this but we all do it when we want to. I think this makes our family unique because we
do remind each other through our love language of what we mean to each other, daily.”
Celebrating Valentine’s Day: The family gets in the spirit of this holiday by enjoying mom’s decorating
in a special part of their home, and indulging in a nice meal together at home or at a restaurant.
They give each other special tokens of their admiration for each other and of course, enjoy creating,
crafting and delivering their Valentines.
What Makes It Tick: They love reminding their family and friends about how much they mean to them,
which is what Valentine’s Day is all about for this tribe. Keeping in mind how much Jesus loves them
and how He asks them to love one another is also an important reflection on this holiday.
Family Roster
Dad: Patrick, Machine Shop
Supervisor (Precision-Hayes,
Sugar Land). Machinist for
over 25 years, learned the
trade in his dad’s machine
shop in Beaumont, TX.
Avid gun collector, enjoys
spending time on the gun
range.
Mom: Melissa, Accounting (Linco
Construction, Katy). Loves crafting,
decorating, traveling and supporting
her boys in all they do. World traveler
and especially fond of Germany and
German culture (spent many summers
with grandparents there). Aspires
to own a farm one day with cows,
chickens lambs and lots of dogs.
Koen: 11 YO boy. Loves to ride his hoverboard,
bike and go-kart. An avid gamer, enjoys building
things on his computer. Member of the National
Junior Honor Society, loves joining various clubs
at his school. Has played soccer with FFPS since
he was four years old, has been a great way for
the family to spend time together cheering him on.
Aspires to be a singer and will be starting music
and voice lessons in 2018!
Levi: 8 YO boy. Enjoys playing outside, on
his computer, and with friends. Greatest past
time is spent building Lego sets. Has also
played soccer with FFPS since he was four
and the family loves cheering him on. Straight
A student, made it to the finals at his school’s
spelling bee this year. Wants to own a farm
with mom one day and help raise all the
animals, family calls him the “animal whisperer.”
Atlas: 3 month old fur
boy (mini schnauzer).
Although he is a
fur baby, he is most
definitely one of the
family – he fills their
hearts with such joy.
