There’s plenty to keep the 

kids busy indoors and out 

with the National Trust 

this half-term. Here’s just some 

of what you can do in North 

Yorkshire during the school 

holidays: 

Beningbrough Hall, Gallery

10 – 18 February

Go on an adventure to look 

out for different kinds of owl 

sculptures in the garden – pick 

up an owl mask when you arrive 

and follow the family trail. 

On 13 and 15 February join 

Artrageous from 1 – 3pm to 

have a go at making origami 

owls. There’s also magical tales 

told by professional story teller, 

Eden, from Stories Alive on 11 

and 14 February. 

Fountains Abbey & Studley 

Royal, near Ripon

Have a creative day at Fountains 

Abbey and Studley Royal during 

February half-term. Make 

a medieval candle-holder at 

Swanley Grange every day from 

11am – 4pm or make a lantern 

to brighten up the winter months

Take a walk around the abbey 

and into the water garden to 

see if you can see snowdrops 

appearing on the banks along 

the river and under the trees. 

Join a snowdrop walk on 17 

February at 2pm to take a closer 

look and have a helping hand at 

finding them. 

Drop by Studley Lakeside 

on 24 February to take a peek 

through a telescope to see the 

water-loving birds dipping and 

diving across the lake. The 

wildlife team will be on hand 

to help identify birds and give 

fascinating facts about why 

they’ve come to live at Fountains 

Abbey and Studley Royal for the 

winter.

the variety of jobs servants

Welcome to 2018 and the latest issue of Primary Times. We hope 

you’ve had a wonderful start to the New Year. 

The temptation at this time of year is to stay indoors, find something 

entertaining on the TV and relax on the sofa under a blanket until 

the weather starts to turn distinctly more summery. Whilst this might 

sound like a good plan (and it does) there’s always plenty to see and 

do once you venture from the sofa and out of the front door.

and if you fancy swapping your sofa for a comfy seat for a while, 

then you could always head to the theatre. You’ll find the best shows 

in your area in the Box Office section. Whether you want to gaze 

at the stars at Dark Skies Festival, indulge in the madcap Aardman

all about, there are loads of opportunities for memorable days out.

Harrogate Stagecoach has just had 

some exciting news 

This year Stagecoach Performing Arts is celebrating its 30th Anniversary and part of the celebrations is the performance of 

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Musical by over 250 Stagecoach Schools at the same time, on July 1st, for a Guinness Book of 

Records attempt at the most simultaneous performances of a musical by any group. The main event will be a performance 

at the prestigious Birmingham Symphony Hall, for which Harrogate Stagecoach has successfully auditioned. We heard

Dark Skies Festival 2018 

Join us this February for Dark Skies Festival 2018! Once again we’ve teamed up with the 

Yorkshire Dales National Park to celebrate all things celestial. For 17 days, the National 

Park will be filled with over 50 events and awe-inspiring adventures to get you out and 

exploring our night sky. The stellar line-up includes stargazing events, star-domes, 

ghost walks, owl prowls and for adrenaline junkies – a pitch black night zip! For little 

stargazers, as well as watching the Dark Skies’ star-studded cast, youngsters will be able 

to get crafty making rockets, telescopes and planet lanterns.

The RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch – which takes 

place during the first half of the spring term (2 

Jan – 23 Feb) – is a chance for children to put 

down their books and get outside to experience 

and learn about the nature that lives in their local 

community. The Birdwatch involves children 

spending an hour watching and counting the birds 

that visit their outdoor space, before sending the 

results to the RSPB. The Big Schools Birdwatch is a 

free activity and only takes an hour to complete. 

Teachers can pick any day during the first half of 

the spring term to take part, with the flexibility 

to run it as a one off or as the centre piece of a 

cross-curricular study, project work or a way for the 

children to improve their outdoor space.

Duracell’s The Big Battery Hunt 

Hundreds of schools have registered their interest in Duracell’s Big Battery Hunt and 

you can too!

The Burton Agnes Orchid Festival this March 

is a celebration of the beauty and diversity of 

orchids. There will be magnificent displays of 

vibrantly coloured and gently fragrant flowers, 

and expert advice available. After marvelling at 

the displays of orchids, visitors can wander in 

the woodland walk to catch the final days of the 

snowdrop opening (included in the admission 

price). Visitors are also welcomed to the 

courtyard, where the shops will be stocked with 

new season’s stock, home grown plants will be 

sold and the café will serve home cooked meals 

and delicious treats throughout the weekend.
