Panaji: An Olive Ridley turtle arrived
at Morjim beach in Pernem on Sunday
morning, a visit that provided some
relief to lovers of the flippered visitors
in the state. The female turtle landed at
4am and crawled straight towards the
interpretation centre overlooking the
mouth of the river Chapora.
"The eggs laid did not have to be
relocated as the nest was dug within
the turtle nesting site," a source said.
While the beach stretch from the
river mouth till almost the first shack
towards north at Temb in Morjim has
been demarcated as turtle nesting site,
the turtles often surface in the area
beyond the shacks.
The eggs then have to be buried in a
pit within the safe zone. With this nest
laid at Morjim on Sunday, the tally has
crawled to three.
Project Goa as Gateway to India for Foreign
Tourists, says US Consul General
PANAJI: Edgard Kagan, the United
States consul-general in Mumbai, today
said that marketing Goa to Americans as
a stand-alone tourism hot-spot may not
work, as many other beach destinations
are closer for them.
Mr Kagan was speaking to reporters
after meeting Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar in Panaji.
"Because of the distance and travel
time, marketing Goa as a stand-alone
tourism destination is not possible.
"If you want a beach vacation, there are
many destinations which are closer to
Organizers & Directors for the show David De Souza and Ricardo Joseph De Souza along with the Winners
Angelo Sandri (Italy) & Dzhamilia Shakirova (Russia) at Tito's, Baga. Behind the Scenes on Page 2.
the US," Mr Kagan said, responding to a
question on promoting Goa as a tourism
destination for the US citizens.
"Goa is a world-class tourist destination
with incredible beaches, incredible
culture but that is also a place that
gives an access to so many incredible
destinations in India," he said.
"In my view...Goa should project that
coming here will give you an opportunity
to travel to other incredible destinations
of India," he said.
Over five lakh foreign tourists visit
Goa's beaches every year, with those from
Russia and the UK topping the list. On his
meeting with Mr Parrikar, Mr Kagan said
they had "very productive conversation".
"We talked about the relationship
between US and India. As a minister of
defence he did make serious efforts to
strengthen our relationship," Mr Kagan
said.
"There is tremendous opportunity in
Goa and we are happy with the existence
of number of American industries here,
we are happy that Goa is a very famous
tourist destination in the US. And we
want to see that it increases," he said.
Time to meet King
Momo at Goa soon
Between Feb 10 and 13, the sunshine
state of India will celebrate the
annual Goa Carnaval, a legacy of its
Portuguese era. Held in different cities
of Goa, the festival includes colourful
parades with huge floats, the dances
and the Goan traditional music among
other things.
While the float parade winds down
the street, with the mythical King
Momo accompanied by his queen and
entourage leading the procession,
visitors—some gaily attired—too join
in the merriment, singing and dancing
with passing floats.
Perched on a hilltop,
overlooking the magnificent
Arabian Sea and picturesque
small Vagator beach lies
Thalassa. Not just a Greek
taverna in Goa, but a place
where the warmth and sheer
happiness of Greek hospitality
amalgamates instinctively with
the laid back, free and tranquil
atmosphere and vibe of Goa.
Foreign Tourist arrivals in India hit new high
of 1 crore, earnings cross $27-billion mark
NEW DELHI: In happy tidings for
India's tourism sector, the year 2017
ended on a high with the number of
foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) crossing
the 10-million mark, which pushed the
country's earnings to over 27 billion
dollars.
The sector is looking to ramp up
tourist arrivals this year+ with new
and niche projects. "I think our sector
is doing very well. But am I happy with
the numbers? I want these numbers to
increase dramatically because India
is an incredible place and we have
everything for everybody. So we are
trying to bring in lot more people,"
Union tourism minister KJ Alphons
said in Kochi on Tuesday.
The minister also said the sector is
contributing 6.88 per cent to India's
GDP and had a 12 per cent share of jobs
in the total employment figures in 2017.
The increase in numbers has helped
India ramp up its overall ranking on
the Tourism Competitiveness Index,
2017. It jumped 25 places from 65 in 2013
to 40 in 2017.
Sources in the ministry also said the
government is 'Looking East' in the
tourism sector to promote India's northeastern
states. As part of the efforts
to introduce new concepts to engage
the larger world, India's golf courses
have found mention in the ministry's
'Incredible India' campaign alongside
the heritage monuments. Ministry
sources attributed the improvement
to the government's renewed focus
on developing infrastructure besides
promoting theme-based and religious
circuits under the Swadesh Darshan
scheme. "Eleven projects have been
sanctioned under this scheme in
2017-18 alone, taking the total number
up to 67 projects. The plan is for
holistic development of pilgrimage
destinations, the Buddhist circuit being
a case in point," a ministry official said.
The Indian market is one of the fastest
growing in the world with travellers
from the country among the worlds
highest spenders, says Trust Lin,
Director of Taiwan Tourism Board.
"Indian tourists are among the world's
highest-spending globetrotters. Their
spending power has been estimated to
be four times that of the Chinese and
Japanese," Lin told IANS in an e-mail
interview from Singapore.
"Today, the Indian market is one of
the fastest growing in the world and
the Indian traveller is now among the
world's highest spender. We are very
keen to get our share of this potential
market and Indian agencies are also
very eager to know about the Taiwan
market," he added.
Lin said India is indeed a growing
market for Taiwan tourism.
"Taiwan has received a good response
from the Indian travellers over the
last few years, especially since our
Group Visa policy was introduced.
Also, tourism from India to Taiwan
has increased largely due to consistent
efforts in building awareness and
perception about the destination," he
said.
With 'Brand India' being an important
market for many countries, Taiwan also
eyes Indian market.
"Brand India is extremely important
for us. It's economy is one of the fastest
growing in the world, With a population
of about 1.33 billion and GDP- seventh
largest in the world, growing by 7
percent + yearly till 2020, the country
offers enormous potential for future
growth in outbound travel.
"India's population is expected to
overtake China as the world's largest
in the next five years, and it's young,
tech-savvy, educated middle class will
double in size to 547 million shortly
thereafter," he said.
"We are confident that with the newly
evolving Indian traveller will find a
unique appeal for Taiwan," added Lin.
So how Taiwan plans to build it's
place in India?
"Taiwan is blessed with natural
beauty, scenic areas, great food,
astonishing history and culture
and Taipei 101, this makes it a great
destination for the Indian traveller.
We are anticipating a high number of
arrivals to Taiwan from India," he said.
"We are promoting Taiwan as Asia's
best kept secret and promoting seven
major verticals- adventure, MICE
(Meetings, Incentives, Conferences,
Events), Family fun, golf, romance,
wellness and women only. We are
continuously doing lots of destination
awareness programs in India.
"The new Visa norm for leisure, which
talks about expired and valid visas,
has helped to grow leisure traffic from
India. Indian Nationals are now entitled
to free Taiwan visa which can be
applied online -- so it's now even easier
to plan a leisure holiday or MICE event
for a visa to travel to Taiwan," he added.

Dr. Con Slobodchikoff, a professor at
Northern Arizona University who has
spent more than 30 years studying how
animals communicate, is now working
on an instrument that will use AI to
learn and translate animal noises and
facial expressions into simple English.
First noting that prairie dogs warn
others of predators using high-pitched
wails, Slobodchikoff then mapped
the complex series of patterns that
prairie dog calls take on. Different
combinations of calls can indicate
incredibly nuanced things, he found,
including colors and appearances.
"I thought, if we can do this with
prairie dogs, we can certainly do it
with dogs and cats," Slobodchikoff told
NBC news. Hence, he's working on an
algorithm that turns the noises made
by dogs and cats into English. Last
year, he founded a company called
Zoolingua that is solely focused on
developing an instrument to translate
body movements. Their website, active
as of October 2017, has yet to publish
any additional reports or findings.
Revealed at Apple's Worldwide
Developers Conference (WWDC) in
June 2017, the HomePod smart speaker
is keeping fans waiting. However,
recent approval from the US telecoms
regulator, the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC), should bring it a
step closer to release, expected Q1 2018,
in the USA, the UK and Australia.
Apple's HomePod is billed as a Siripowered
smart speaker, similar to
the Amazon Echo and Google Home
speaker lines. Initially expected late
2017, its release has been delayed,
letting competitors get a head start in
this fast-growing consumer tech sector.
Indeed, research from Canalys suggests
that smart speaker sales could top 50
million in 2018.
Apple has a few things up its sleeve
to stand out from competitors. On the
audio front, Apple promises 360-degree
sound quality, with a woofer for
bass plus seven tweeters for higher
frequencies. Moreover, the speaker
uses spatial awareness technology
to determine its location in the room
and adjust the sound automatically.
The HomePod has no less than six
built-in microphones to help it "hear"
and "understand" user requests.
Powered by Apple's voice assistant
Siri, the speaker lets users search for
information or send messages and
offers access to more than 40 million
songs when paired with an Apple
Music subscription. HomePod can also
be used a veritable nerve center for the
smart home, interacting with the user's
smartphone to control accessories
connected via HomeKit, for example,
from lighting to blinds.
Scientists have created 'real' artificial human blood - and it
could 'revolutionise the treatment of trauma patients'
A British firm is developing what could
be the world’s most pioneering liquid
invention - ‘real’ artificial human blood.
Like real blood, the liquid acts as a
haemoglobin-based oxygen carrier and
can be added to the patient’s own blood
supply in transfusions.
SpheriTech claims its synthetic blood
‘SpheriSome Hb’ could revolutionise the
treatment of trauma patients. And unlike
donated human blood it will never have
the risk of containing diseases.
For years scientists have been researching
possible human blood substitutes.
One, based on bovine haemoglobin, is
being trialled in the US while the NHS
is developing lab-generated red blood
when the same political party stays in
power for more number of years.
cells made from human stem cells.
Dr Don Wellings, founder and MD
of SpheriTech based in Runcorn,
Cheshire, said: “The use of donated
blood in transfusion therapy, while
effective in restoring an adequate
supply of oxygen in the body of the
recipient, has several limitations.
“Although testing procedures exist to
detect the presence of certain diseases in
blood, these procedures cannot eliminate
completely the risk of blood-borne
disease.”/ Transfused blood can be used
only in recipients having a blood type
compatible with that of the donor.
“Blood typing and handling
procedures as well as specific storage
requirements, limit the feasibility of
using donated blood in many cases.
Dr Wellings says in addition to its unique
properties, SpheriSome Hb also has the
ability to be fully excreted from the body.
Also it will not accumulate in various
tissues, and is non-toxic, non-immunogenic,
non-antigenic and non-carcinogenic.

Hijab Model Amena Khan Pulls Out Of
L'Oreal Campaign Over Israel Tweets
British model Amena Khan, who had
been chosen by L'Oreal to appear in an
advertising campaign in Britain, has
pulled out over accusations she made
anti-Israeli comments in a series of old
Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan,
Hollywood star Cate Blanchett and
singer-songwriter Elton John received
awards at the World Economic Forum in
tweets.
The French cosmetics giant last week
selected her to be the first woman in
a hijab for a mainstream shampoo
campaign.
SRK honoured with Crystal Award
by World Economic Forum
Shah Rukh Khan shares a perfect fan moment with Elton John and Cate Blanchett.
Davos on Monday for their work raising
awareness about human rights issues.
Shah Rukh, one of Hindi cinema’s most
globally known faces, has been feted as
Khan's messages, posted on Twitter
in 2014, have since been deleted.
"I deeply regret the content of the
tweets I made in 2014, and sincerely
apologise for the upset and hurt
that they have caused," she said
on Twitter on Monday. "With deep
regret, I've decided to step down from
this campaign because the current
conversations surrounding it detract
from the positive and inclusive
sentiment that it set out to deliver."
L'Oreal group, contacted by AFP, said
it "approved" her decision.
"We appreciate the fact that Amena
has apologised for the content of her
tweets and for the reactions they may
have aroused," it said.
It is not the first time a L'Oreal
advertising campaign to promote
diversity has foundered because of
controversial social media comments
by a model. Last summer the group
dropped British black transgender
model Munroe Bergdorf over Facebook
comments she made accusing all
whites of racial violence.
he is a founder of the non-profit Meer
Foundation, which provides support
to female victims of acid attacks and
major burn injuries through medical
treatment, legal aid, vocational training,
rehabilitation and livelihood support.
Talking about receiving the honour,
SRK quipped, “Extremely charged that
I’ve had this amazing opportunity, this
award, being recognized like this for
minuscule work that I did, I’d like to do
it with even more fervor. What is even
more pleasant is that India is here in full
power.”
He has also been responsible for
the creation of specialised children’s
hospital wards and has supported child
care centres with free boarding for kids
undergoing cancer treatment.
On the stage, he thanked the ladies of
his life for his values. He said, “I want to
thank my sister, my wife and my little
daughter for bringing me up well and
teaching me the value of requesting,
sometimes imploring and begging a yes
from a woman, instead of forcing it upon
her.”
Kashmiri Chilli
Chicken Filled
Samosa Wins
Contest In
South Africa
Popular Indian snack samosa with
Kashmiri chilli chicken fillings has
beaten chocolate, cashew nuts and
other exotic entries in a first such
contest in South Africa. The contest
was organised by the largest national
newspaper for the Indian community
in South Africa.
Among the various entries in the
competition were samosas that
featured almonds and cashews drizzled
with chocolate; chocolate covered in
edible glitter; Margherita pizza filling
and chicken jalapeno.
The South African Indian specialty
samosa (also referred to as samosa) is a
deep-fried flat version of the traditional
Punjabi snack, filled with a variety
of savoury or sweet treats in a crispy
pastry. Salma Agjee won the contest
organised by the weekly Post, after her
daughter submitted her recipe. "I love
cooking and always believe in taking a
recipe a step further by adding a twist
to it," Agjee was quoted as saying by
the newspaper.
"My filling was my own invention
based on what I had initially made as
a chicken sandwich for my children.
The chicken was cooked with Kashmiri
chilli powder, then I added two types
of cheese, mozzarella and gouda, and
mayonnaise," she said.

Relief for
Indian workers
as Kuwait
announces
amnesty
Indian workers in Kuwait happy after the
announcement of amnesty.
HYDERABAD: In a relief for thousands
of Indian workers forced to illegally
extend their stay in Kuwait due to
non-payment of salaries, the Kuwaiti
government on Tuesday announced that
it won't impose any penalty on them.
The amnesty has been granted from
January 29 to February 22. "This comes
as a great relief for the Indian workers,"
said social worker Shaheen Sayyed who
had taken up their cause.
The penalty for overstaying in Kuwait
is two Kuwaiti Dinars, i.e. Rs 424, per
day. The unpaid workers, who had
overstayed by several months, could not
afford to pay the fine.
The amnesty granted by the Kuwaiti
government comes in the wake of
Union minister of state for external
affairs VK Singh's recent visit to the
country. Singh had taken up the issue
of the workers who had not been paid
by Kharafi National Company. He also
spoke to a Kuwaiti minister to waive
penalty for those who wanted to return
to India. The amnesty also means that
the workers can once again go back to
Kuwait legally to take up jobs.
Haj Subsidy ends, funds to
go into Minority Education
NEW DELHI: In keeping with Supreme
Court orders and its own political
plank, the Modi government will no
longer provide subsidy to Haj pilgrims
and has pledged that funds saved will
be used for the education of minorities,
particularly girl children.
"There will be no subsidy for Haj from
this year," minority affairs minister
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told the media
on Tuesday during an interaction at
the BJP headquarters and said that the
move is part of an effort to "empower
minorities without appeasement".
The government will invest what it
saves for minority education. It had spent
over Rs 250 crore last year on subsidising
the travel to Saudi Arabia, he said.
Restrictions on pilgrims having to
take flights from their place of stay
or nearest airports have been relaxed
and this will lead to cheaper air travel,
Naqvi said. It will also allow Haj
travellers to take advantage of bulk
PM Modi in Davos: India set sights on
India is working toward a five trillion
China bans Hip-Hop
Singers, Actors with
Tattoos from TV
China has banned hip-hop singers, and
actors with tattoos from appearing
on television shows, according to
reports. The country's media regulator
issued orders to ban actors whose
"heart and morality" did not match
the Communist Party's values. The
crackdown is reportedly part of a
broader attempt by the Communist
Party to close potential platforms for
dissent by the youth.
bookings while the government will
continue to spend on medical expenses.
Naqvi said allowing choice of
embarkation port gives pilgrims the
option of cheaper travel. A pilgrim
from Gaya would pay Rs 1,20,000 but if
he or she travels from Kolkata, the cost
would be Rs 70,000. Similarly, it would
cost Rs 1,10,000 from Srinagar but the
cost would come down to Rs 60,000 from
Delhi. The cost would be Rs 1 lakh from
Indore and Rs 58,000 from Mumbai,
respectively, the minister said. These
are figures according to 2017 rates.
The Saudi Arabian government has
agreed to allow Indians to go on Haj by the
sea route and officials of the two countries
will work out the modalities, he said. Haj
pilgrims from certain regions will have
an additional option to choose from where
they want to fly to Saudi Arabia for the
annual pilgrimage, he said and claimed
that this would bring down the cost by up
to 70 per cent on some routes.
have been opened to foreign direct
investment," said Modi, the first Indian
prime minister in two decades to
attend the forum of global business and
political leaders.
"More than 1400 archaic laws that
were an obstacle to doing business"
have been abolished in the last three
years, he said.
"India is removing the red tape and
laying out the red carpet," he said.
Modi also listed climate change,
terrorism and inward-looking focus of
some nations as the greatest threats to
the world.
Modi is spearheading efforts to
attract foreign investment to kick
start growth in the Asia's third-largest
economy which is forecast to expand at
a three-year low.
Sweeping policy changes, including
a ban of high denomination currency
bills and a botched good and services
tax roll out, have imperiled revenues
and placed further strain on the
region's widest budget deficit.
On the promise of cutting graft and
creating jobs, Modi was voted to power
in 2014 with the biggest mandate in
three decades. He got a shot in arm
when Moody's upgraded India for the
first time in 14 years and was further
buoyed when India made it into the top
100 in the World Bank's Doing Business
rankings last year, narrowing gap with
competitor China. The annual budget
on February 1 is his next opportunity
to revive growth.
First 2019 Mustang Bullitt
auctioned for a good cause
The limited-edition 2019 Mustang Bullitt
commemorates the 50th anniversary
of the iconic action movie of the same
name, starring the King of Cool, Steve
McQueen and a highland green Ford
Mustang GT390 in a 10-minute car chase
up and down the hills of San Francisco
that is still regarded as the gold
standard of the genre.
Presented for auction by Ford North
America president Raj Nair and the
Steve McQueen estate, the car hasn’t
even been built yet, so McQueen’s son
Chad drove the pre-production prototype
that was shown at the recent world
launch of the model at the Detroit Motor
Show up onto the block for the sale.
It went for a massive $300 000 (R3.63
million), every cent of which went to
the Boys Republic school, a private,
non-profit, non-denominational school
and treatment community for troubled
youngsters based in Chino Hills,
California.
It’s well known that Steve McQueen
was remanded there by his stepfather
at age 14 for being ‘incorrigible’ after
being caught by police stealing hubcaps,
and stayed at Boys Republic until he
was 16, eventually becoming a member
of the Boys Council.
What’s not so well known is that
McQueen often demanded large
numbers of electric razors and pairs
of jeans in the studio contracts for his
films, to be delivered to Boys Republic,
and regularly went back there to talk to
the boys, hang out and play pool.

Scientists go Ape after Indian Minister dubs Darwin Theory ‘Wrong’
Union Minister Satyapal Singh
Three Indian science academies
have rebuked the country’s human
resource development minister after he
questioned Darwin theory, saying that
no one ever saw “a man turning into
an ape.”
Satyapal Singh caused quite a
stir last week after challenging
Charles Darwin’s evolution theory as
“scientifically wrong.”
“Since man is seen on Earth, he
has always been a man,” claimed the
minister, who has a PhD in chemistry.
Given that “nobody saw a man turning
into an ape,” Singh suggested a change
in the curriculum.
The scientific community didn’t
find his arguments appealing, and
said there was “no scientific basis”
behind Singh’s claims. “Evolutionary
theory, to which Darwin made seminal
contributions, is well established.
There is no scientific dispute about
the basic facts of evolution,” the
joint statement reads. It would be
“a retrograde step to remove the
teaching” of Darwin’s theory, which
has been “confirmed by experiments
and observations.”
Camels disqualified from Beauty
Contest for using Botox
Twelve camels have been disqualified
from Saudi Arabia's annual camel
beauty contest because their owners
resorted to giving them botox injections.
The judges look at many traits in the
beasts, including the size of the lips, and
some owners have been tempted to use
botox to give their camels a fuller pout.
The month-long festival attracts tens of
thousands of participants, with millions
of dollars in prize money at stake.
Organisers of the month-long annual
camel festival aim to reflect traditional
aspects of Saudi cultural heritage.
And for the Bedouin of Arabia, nothing
is more essential than the camel, used
for centuries for food, transport, as a
war machine and as a companion.
Chairman of the King Abdulaziz
Foundation Fahd al-Semmari said the
contest aimed to highlight the camel's
importance.
Events at the festival include races and
show competitions with combined purses
of 213 million riyals ($70.3 million).
The pavilion features an auction where
top camels can fetch millions of riyals.
There are food stalls and souvenir
shops, a petting zoo featuring the
world's tallest and shortest camels, a
museum with life-size sand sculptures
of camels, tents for tasting camel's milk
and viewing camel-hair textiles, and a
planetarium showing how Arabs rode
camels through the desert guided by the
stars.
[abc.net.au]
More than 3,000 scientists and
“scientist oriented members of
public” also spoke up against the
“overly simplistic and misleading
representation of evolution” in an
online petition, calling on Singh to
retract his remarks, according to
NDTV.
The minister has remained adamant,
however. "I absolutely stand by my
comment that Charles Darwin's theory
of evolution is not scientific. There is
hardly any evidence to substantiate
the theory,” he reiterated on Monday,
citing “great scientists of the world.”
Singh even suggested that his ministry
would sponsor a global conference “to
decide what is true and factual and that
must be taught in schools and colleges."
Meanwhile, Singh doesn’t stand alone
in his disbelief of the theory, first set
out in the 1859 book ‘On the Origin of
Species’, in which Darwin argues that
organisms evolve through natural
selection.
According to last year’s Pew Research
Center survey, some 34 percent of
US adults said that humans have
existed in their present form since the
beginning of time, while four in ten
residents in several Latin American
countries shared their views. [rt.com]
