The SHC Sukkur bench
had granted a stay order
against the balloting on a
Abdul Majid approached the
court, contending that some
of conditions of the new Hajj
policy were un-Islamic and
not in line with Sharia. He
explained that the New Hajj
policy prevented people
from performing the pilgrimage
more than one time within
a certain period of time,
which was against the
Sharia. The ministry in a
SBP finds no bank account
of Zainab's murderer
Shahid Masood made baseless allegations: Punjab govt spokesman
LAHORE: Imran Ali, the prime suspect
in Zainab Amin rape and murder case, has
no commercial bank accounts, confirmed
State Bank of Pakistan.
In a letter to the Joint Investigation Team,
constituted to probe the rape and murder of
seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur, the SBP
said, “All commercial banks have informed
that they have searched their databases and
found no account of the accused against the
said CNIC of Imran Ali s/o Arshad.”
On Thursday a private TV anchor person
had claimed that culprit Imran involved in
Zainab’s murder had about 37 local and foreign
bank accounts, whereas allegedly two
influential persons were backing him.
Imran was arrested in the rape and killing
of a 7-year-old girl Zainab in Kasur and has
confessed to her and at least seven other
child killings.
Meanwhile, The Punjab government on
Friday said that allegations by anchor Dr.
Shahid Masood were completely baseless,
and a mischievous attempt to detrack from
the original investigation.
ISLAMABAD: Police
on Friday submitted to
Supreme Court an investigative
report on January 13
'encounter' in which
Naqeebullah Mehsud and
three others were killed in
Karachi.
The report was prepared
by a police committee, headed
by Additional IGP Sindh
C o u n t e r - T e r r o r i s m
Department Dr Sanaullah
Abbasi, comprising DIG
East SultanAli Khowaja and
DIG South Azad Khan.
According to our correspondent,
the report says the
so-called encounter was a
one-sided and staged shooting
in which Naqeebullah
and three others were killed.
In the report, Rao Anwar
and his team has been held
responsible.
It says Mehsud and two
others were picked from
Sohrab Goth on January 3,
although the other two were
later released by Anwar and
Punjab government spokesman Malik
Ahmed Khan addressing a press conference
said that the anchor made certain revelations
in the Zainab rape-murder case, and subsequently
an investigation team was formed to
probe them.
He said that it was alleged that the main
suspect, Imran Ali, had several bank
accounts including foreign currency
accounts, and certain documents were even
submitted in the Supreme Court.
He said that a notice was sent to anchor
Shahid Masood to appear before the Joint
Investigation Team formed by the Punjab
government, but he did turn up and no contact
could be established with him.
“The anchor did not appear before the
JIT and now his mobile phone is swithced,”
he said.
He said that the documents submitted by
Dr. Shahid Masood were unverified and
bogus. This has been proved by the State
Bank of Pakistan which has stated that are
no bank accounts in the name of the main
suspect in Zainab murder case.
encounter was staged by the
police team.
Rao Anwar had claimed
that Mehsud was a Tehreeke-Taliban
Pakistan (TTP)
militant, but so far, no evidence
has emerged.
Mehsud’s family also disputed
Anwar's claim.
Banning narrow-bodied
minibuses prerequisite to
improve commuting system
KARACHI: Government
of Sindh has been reluctant
to ban narrow-bodied public
transport minibuses and
coaches in Karachi, despite
fully knowing that the widebodied
buses are the only
solution to poor commuting
system in the port city.
Experts and transport
engineers for years have
been opining that thousands
of narrow-bodied public
transport minibuses and
coaches plying on the city
streets are the main cause
of traffic congestion and to
improve the situation the
Sindh transport department
should cancel route permits
of these low passenger
capacity vehicles and issue
public transport route permits
only to the wide-bodied
buses.
Introduction of widebodied
buses on all public
transport routes of the city
would result in catering
more passengers on every
bus route trip, which means
less congestion of traffic on
busy roads. In fact in no
other mega urban city in the
world saving Karachi these
small low-capacity minibuses
are given public transport
route permits.
IDEOLOGY of Pakistan's foundation was based
on, but later grossly violated, Islamic principles and
orders of Allah, Prophet (S) and glorious Quran, proclaimed
since centuries as a complete way of life and
final class of divine religious education through last
religion of Islam that Muslims believe was expected
to be followed by all human beings and jinn etc.
PRESERVATION or downfall thereof depends
on properly following or forsaking of basics, composition,
laws, morals, character, aims and objectives,
principles and purpose of any human or material
existence, meaning all those ingredients and
composition, moral or physical, for reasonable survival
of a nation or a country.
DOWNFALL of those life sustaining values for
upholding a true spirit and living of Pakistan and
Pakistani nation is all too evident. More commonly,
people are comparing other countries having almost
insurmountable crisis of so many languages, races,
cultures and among most populated states each so
different from each other, but having morality rule
over immorality in general and law does justice too.
Though, people are viewing Pakistan having faced
conspiracies and destabilizing plots from so many
sides but still miraculously surviving: In the end,
however, an overall public opinion tends to express
that other countries is overall better off than
Pakistan.
IF not accepted or resolved, that is a greatest
quality of a nation's life and living which, with due
care or reforms, may lead to a very survival problem
mainly consisting of Pakistanis being better human
beings or otherwise, with or without interference or
domination of either small or big powers whatsoever.
ABSENCE of unity, faith and discipline, those
three pillars repeatedly emphasized upon serving as
protection of a nation, calls for strengthening these
qualities. Pakistanis like most other Muslim or non
Muslim nations, do follow religion in verbal and
superficial ways without practicing set orders of
their religions. Aside religion, humanity of humans,
morality of people in character and actions, measuring
their reasonability of survival with other nations
is also duly considered. Lawlessness is rampant,
without due overall justice, accountability and legal
punishments. It was turning morality in Pakistanis
into immorality in words and deeds, spreading a
massive corruption from governmental and leadership
levels down to a national scale that was corrupting
an entire nation to the core.
PEOPLE with goodness were left high and dry,
hopeless with a dark future. Evil was making
inroads into almost everyone and everything. Load
shedding or frequent 6 to 12 hours daily breakdowns
of power supplies have closed many arteries
of economic lifeline and destroyed major parts of
manufacturing industries and human living. Strict
rule of law and enforcing of accountability stood
waiting for action that was not forthcoming. It must.
All this needed electoral reforms, opposed by ruling
governments in different tenures in power, and
reform movements were thus blocked, shattered,
subdued and defeated, but can be followed to make
a physically deprived and mentally inadequate society
alive and kicking again.
Why ‘America First’ is a
hard sell in Davos
Despite Trump’s nativist agenda and protectionist policies, there is a
realisation that global problems are also American problems
By Ishaan Tharoor
There is no bigger story at the World
Economic Forum than the first appearance
of an American leader since
2000. United States President Donald Trump
talks about the glories of his “America First”
domestic and foreign policy, touting the supposed
roaring success of the US economy
under his watch and reaffirming the nativist
tenets that underline his worldview. He is
extending a hand to a wary audience, pitching
America as open for business and investment.
“This is about an America First agenda.
But America First does mean working with
the rest of the world,” said US Treasury
Secretary Steve Mnuchin at a press conference.
Mnuchin’s counterpart at the
Commerce Department, Wilbur Ross, was
more hawkish, gesturing to China’s supposedly
unfair trade practices. “Trade wars are
fought every single day,” Ross said when
asked about the Trump administration’s
apparent protectionism.
But at Davos, it’s not just the US that’s
manning the barricades. Both French
President Emmanuel Macron and German
Chancellor Angela Merkel launched thinly
veiled attacks on Trump’s agenda and used
their platforms to hail the potential emergence
of a more independent and more integrated
Europe. “We need to take more
responsibility; we need to take our destiny
into our own hands,” Merkel said, issuing
what’s now become a familiar refrain in the
age of Trump. She also said protectionism
was not the answer and lamented the poison
of right-wing populism, which, among other
things, threatens her own hold on power as
Germany struggles to form a new government.
“We think that shutting ourselves off, isolating
ourselves, will not lead us into a good
future,” Merkel said, echoing what a number
of other world leaders had already voiced in
Davos. Like them, she argued that collaboration,
cooperation and multilateral solutions
— instead of, say, the unilateral bluster of
Trump — are what’s needed.
That was a call explicitly made by Macron,
as well. His remarks would be familiar to
anyone who has listened to his earlier major
speeches, bullish on France’s role at the core
of the European Union and rife with calls for
innovation and huge investments in education
and research to revitalise the French economy.
He also used the occasion to mock at
Trump’s climate denial.
“With this snow, it’s hard to believe in
global warming,” Macron joked, referring to
the walls of ice and slush built up around the
forum’s venues. “Obviously and thankfully,
you didn’t invite anyone sceptical about global
warming this year.”
Jokes aside, the attendees at Davos are
genuinely curious about Trump. There’s nothing
unusual about a nation prioritising its
own interests — indeed, that’s how every
nation-state functions. The main difference
with Trump, suggested Luis Almagro, the
secretary-general of the Organisation of
American States, is that of rhetoric, not necessarily
policy. He pointed out that former
president Barack Obama employed none of
the racially charged anti-immigration tactics
of the Trump administration, yet huge numbers
of deportations still took place under
Obama’s watch.
Almagro was speaking at a panel co-hosted
by the Washington Post and moderated by
Washington Post executive editor Martin
Baron. The real question is, do “America
First” policies really put America First? said
Keyu Jin, a professor at the London School of
Economics, speaking at the same event. We
blame a lot on globalisation and trade, where
in fact job losses are known to be much more
associated with technology.
Senator Bob Corker, who clashed with
Trump a few times over the course of 2017,
urged the president to offer an explanation of
“America First” in a way that doesn’t make it
look that it’s about America being alone.
Despite the entreaties of administration officials,
though, “America alone” is the conclusion
drawn by many analysts of Trump’s foreign
policy. Trump, through his tweeted
attacks on allies and oft-muddled messaging,
has burnt some goodwill that built up over
many years overseas, argued Corker, “and it’s
going to take some time rebuild that”.
Others are simply looking for a real plan.
Gassan Hasbani, the Deputy Prime Minister
of Lebanon, applauded Trump’s willingness
to engage the Middle East. But he failed to
see how Trump’s decision to recognise occupied
Jerusalem as Israel’s capital — without
extracting any concessions on behalf of the
Palestinians — played into an “America
First” narrative. And as Daesh (the self-proclaimed
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant)
is in retreat in Syria and Iraq, he said, the
post-Daesh period needs a clear strategy —
one that includes a substantive commitment
to building peace in the region and not just
prosecuting war.
Ultimately, despite the scepticism, Trump
may have found in Davos a global community
that would prefer to be his friend. It’s great
that the American president came here and
faced people who might have differed with
his views, said Erna Solberg, the Prime
Minister of Norway. “I don’t think there’s a
place to hide in this world.” Global problems
are also American problems.
Despite sanctions, North Korea exported
PARIS/LONDON/MOS
COW: North Korea shipped
coal to Russia last year
which was then delivered to
South Korea and Japan in a
likely violation of U.N.
European intelligence
The U.N. Security
Britain sets out EU transition
plans as Brexiteers cry foul
LONDON: Britain will
on Friday demand the freedom
to sign trade deals during
its post-Brexit transition
period, as Prime Minster
Theresa May seeks to quell
a mounting dispute in her
party over future ties with
Europe.
Brexit minister David
Davis will set out the government’s
position on a
transition period in a
speech, looking to offer
something for both those
who want to keep close ties
with the EU after leaving
and those who want a more
radical break.
The balancing act
designed to appease both
business and Brexiteers is a
taste of things to come for a
weakened May after internal
divisions in her party
spilled out into the open.
On Thursday, finance
minister Philip Hammond
was rebuked by May’s
office after he said he hoped
Britain would diverge from
the EU only “very modestly”
after Brexit. He spoke
hours before the head of a
hardline group of Brexiteer
lawmakers urged May to
stop accepting negotiating
terms set by the EU.
“Of course maintaining
access to each other’s markets
on current terms means
we will replicate the effects
of the EU customs union
during the implementation
period,” Davis will say in a
speech in northeastern
England.
“But participating in a
customs union should not
preclude us from formally
negotiating - or indeed
signing - trade agreements,”
he will say, while
adding that any such deals
could not enter into force
until the transition period
has ended.
DAVOS, Switzerland:
U.S. President Donald
Trump is expected to use
his maiden speech to the
World Economic Forum on
Friday to promote his tax
cuts, deregulation and
trade policies to chief
executives, bankers and
political leaders.
Trump, who flew into the
sanctum of the global elite at
the Swiss ski resort of
Davos on Thursday, will
deliver the event’s main
closing address after a week
of veiled criticism of his
America First agenda by
several world leaders here.
The first sitting U.S.
president to visit the annual
summit since Bill Clinton in
2000, Trump was greeted on
arrival by hundreds of curious
delegates who snapped
pictures as he entered the
congress center.
He made an immediate
impression: he talked up the
dollar, going against the
grain of previous remarks
made by his treasury secretary
at Davos, and threatened
to withhold aid to
Palestinians unless they pursued
peace with Israel.
BERLIN: German
Chancellor Angela
Merkel’s conservatives
opened coalition talks with
their Social Democrat
(SPD) partners on Friday,
promising swift progress
in negotiations aimed at
ending four months of
political limbo in Europe’s
largest economy.
Arriving at her
Christian Democrat
(CDU) party’s headquarters,
Merkel said she was
optimistic and determined
about the discussions
aimed at renewing the
“grand coalition” that governed
for the past four
years.
“People expect us to
move towards forming a
government and that’s
why I‘m very optimistic
and very determined,” she
spokesman Dmitry Peskov,
asked about allegations that
Russia is re-exporting North
Korean coal, said on Friday
that Russia abides by norms
said. The talks are her best
hope of securing a fourth
term after the failure of an
earlier attempt to form a
three-way coalition.
“I believe it is achievable
within a reasonable
timeframe,” she added.
While most experts
expect talks to succeed,
many in the SPD are
reluctant, seeing a repeat
of international law.
“Russia is a responsible
member of the international
community,” he told
reporters at a conference
call. Reuters reported earlier
coalition as at best a
painful sacrifice by their
party for the sake of stability
in Europe’s economic
and political behemoth.
Appealing to them,
leader Martin Schulz
stressed their party’s global
responsibility.
“Given the challenges
from China and the U.S.,
the European Union needs
that North Korea had
shipped coal to Russia last
year which was then delivered
to South Korea and
Japan in a likely violation of
U.N. sanctions.
Leaders promise swift end to Germany's four-month limbo
a strong, pro-European
Germany,” he said. “And
that you will only get if
the SPD is in government.”
Underlining the stakes
for the SPD, one of two
“people’s parties” that
dominated post-war
German history, a poll for
ARD television showed
only 19 percent would
vote for it in repeat elections,
placing it just seven
points ahead of the farright
Alternative for
Germany (AfD).
Riven by division over
whether it would not be
better to rebuild in opposition,
the SPD’s leadership
is under pressure from its
radical youth wing to win
concessions from the conservatives,
in particular.
HEAVY POLICE AROUND MELBOURNE RALLIES
‘Australia does not deserve any National Day’
SJA Jafri
Bureau Chief
Australia
MELBOURNE/CAN-
BERRA: Invasion Day protesters
have been told
Australia “does not
deserve” a national day, as
thousands of people
marched on state
Parliament.
Elder Tony Birch told
several thousand people
gathered in Spring St that
the country was “not mature
enough” to celebrate on any
day, not just January 26.
“This country does not
deserve a day of national
celebration in any capacity,”
he said.
Rally organizer Tarneen
Onus-Williams said “f***
Australia, hope it burns to
the ground”.
Thousands of people
converged on the intersection
of Spring and Collins
streets to protest against
Australia Day, with a heavy
police presence on standby
in case of violent clashes.
They loudly chanted
“always was, always will be
Aboriginal land”.
The crowd then marched
down Bourke St.
Victoria Police yesterday
issued calls for calm with
left and right-wing rallies
scheduled.
Police, including mounted
and public order teams,
blocked the steps of state
Parliament.
Greens Leader Richard
Di Natale spoke to supporters
before the protest rally
began.
He said he did not fear
for his safety from rightwing
groups and urged all
Australians to support
changing the date.
“It’s a day I want to celebrate
because I am proud of
this country but I will never
be able to celebrate
Australia Day in January 26
when it brings so much hurt
and suffering to Aboriginal
people,” he said.
The True Blue Crew and
United Patriots Front are
holding a “beach party” in
St Kilda, where police
expected to have a heavy
presence, while
Melbourne’s CBD will also
be an area of focus throughout
the day.
Authorities yesterday
said intelligence did not
suggest any terror threats.
Meanwhile, right-wing
activists took their cause to
Moreland City Council to
protest outside a citizenship
ceremony.
Six men wearing
Australian flags were handing
out flyers to the new citizens
at Coburg Town Hall.
“We are protesting the
council’s decision to not
refer to the phrase ‘Australia
Day’ in the official ceremony,”
Neil Erikson told
media.

State Bank of Pakistan
raises interest rate to 6%
KARACHI: State Bank
of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday
announced to raise the policy
rate by 25 bps to 6.00 percent.
A monetary police
release by the SBP said
Pakistan’s economic growth
is on track to achieve its
highest level in the last
eleven years. Average headline
inflation remains within
the forecast range of SBP,
but core inflation has continued
to increase. Fiscal
deficit for H1-FY18 is
expected to fall close to the
last year’s 2.5 percent.
There has been visible
improvement in export
growth and remittances are
marginally higher.
However, largely due to
high level of imports the current
account deficit remains
under pressure. The
exchange rate adjustment in
December 2017 is expected
to help ease the pressure on
the external front.
The progress in the real
sector indicates that agriculture
sector is set to perform
better for the second year in
a row. Production of all
major Kharif crops, except
LONDON: Oil paused
on Friday after hitting fresh
three-year highs in the previous
session, but weakness
in the dollar continued to
underpin prices.
Brent crude futures
stood at $70.21 per barrel at
1441 GMT, 21 cents below
maize, has surpassed the
level of FY17. Similarly,
large scale manufacturing
(LSM) recorded a healthy
broad-based growth of 7.2
percent during Jul-Nov
FY18 as compared to 3.2
percent during the same
period last year. While there
could be some deceleration
in LSM growth due to sector
specific issues such as sugar,
POL and fertilizer, overall
industrial activity is likely to
their last close. On
Thursday, the contract
climbed to as high as
$71.28 per barrel, its highest
since 2014.
U.S. West Texas
Intermediate (WTI) crude
futures were at $65.61 a
barrel, 10 cents higher. On
remain strong. Benefiting
from both infrastructure and
CPEC related investments,
construction and its allied
industries are expected to
maintain their higher growth
momentum. After incorporating
the impact of commodity
sector dynamics on
the services sector, the real
GDP growth is projected to
be around 5.8 percent, significantly
higher than FY17,
but marginally lower than
the annual target of 6 percent
for FY18. This is largely due
to expectations of a belowtarget
wheat crop because of
a reduction in area under
cultivation.
Average headline inflation
for H1-FY18 stands at
3.8 percent. Meanwhile,
core inflation (non-foodnon-energy)
continued to
maintain its higher trajectory,
and clocked in at 5.5 percent
during the first half of
the year as compared to 4.9
percent last year. This
together with a lagged
impact of PKR depreciation
and rising international oil
prices are likely to increase
inflation in the coming
months. Taking into account
the impact of all these developments,
while the average
inflation for FY18 is still
projected to fall in the range
of 4.5 to 5.5 percent, end of
fiscal year YoY inflation is
likely to inch towards the
annual target of 6 percent.
Broad money supply
grew marginally by 1.9 percent
during 1st Jul-12th Jan
FY18.. This is a reflection
Thursday, they also reached
their highest since
December 2014, at $66.66
per barrel.
Both contracts were set
for weekly gains after support
from a weakening dollar,
which on Friday hit new
three-year lows against a
of the decline in NFA and
government efforts to contain
expenditures. Higher
tax collection and proceeds
from the issuance of Sukuk
and Eurobond have led to
reduction in net budgetary
borrowing which stood at
Rs. 401.9 billion during 1st
Jul-12th Jan FY18 as compared
to Rs. 470.4 billion in
the corresponding period of
the previous year.
Moreover, the delay in the
sugar crushing season also
contributed to a moderation
of demand in private sector
credit.
On the external front,
export receipts posted the
highest growth in the last
seven years of 10.8 percent
in H1-FY18 against a reduction
of 1.4 percent in H1-
FY17. Worker’s remittances
also recorded growth (2.5
percent) during the first half
of the year as compared to a
decline in the same period
last year. However, favorable
impact of these positives
was overshadowed by
the continuation of strong
growth in imports of goods
and services. The current
account deficit widened to
was 1.6 times of the deficit
financial accounts show that
one-fifth of this deficit was
financed by healthy foreign
and the rest was managed by
the official flows and the
a result, SBP’s liquid foreign
Mr. Ali Sarfraz, Chief Executive Officer, Karandaaz Pakistan and Mr. Yasir Ashfaq
Chief Executive Officer PMIC in a ceremony held in Islamabad.
This agreement is envisaged to play an important role towards achievement of
PMIC to raise more funds to meet the needs of the Microfinance Banks (MFBs) and
Non-Bank Microfinance Institutions (NBMFIs) for larger funding lines with longer
tenors. The sub loan will also increase the per party exposure limit of PMIC and
shall allow PMIC to lend more funds to its microfinance borrowers.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ali Sarfraz, CEOKarandaaz Pakistanstressed on
the importance of microfinance for the success of Pakistan’s National Financial
Inclusion Strategy. “We are delighted of our role in establishing PMIC in 2016 with
the financial support from UK’s Department of International Development and now
to be further strengthening it through this subordinated loan for on-lending to microfinance
institutions and microfinance banks. This additional capital that focuses on
specific lending programmes will help PMIC in supporting more unserved and
underserved microenterprises. We are hopeful that by increasing the access of
finance to businesses, we will be able to achieve our development targets of more
jobs and better incomes at household level.”
Mr. YasirAshfaq, CEO PMIC commented “As sector developer for the microfinance
sector in Pakistan, PMIC is committed to meet the demand for financial services
in the country especially for the marginalized and underserved segment of the
society. We believe that this subordinate loan agreement with Karandaaz Pakistan
will enable PMIC to focus on product innovation, especially for micro and small
enterprises and job creation through our borrowing institutions (Microfinance
Institutions and Microfinance Banks) and would accelerate financial inclusion in the
country.”
Karandaaz Pakistan is supporting micro, small and medium enterprise sector in
Pakistan and increasing access to finance for unbanked populations by leveraging
digital technologies, developing and disseminating evidence based insights, and
encouraging innovation in financial space. Karandaaz Pakistan has received funding
from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).
PCB takes U-turn on 5-year
deal with Cricket West Indies
LAHORE: PCB and
Cricket West Indies (CWI)
had signed a five-year deal
on November 2017 that
mentioned they will be
playing three-match T20I
Pakistan and triangular
However, looks like PCB
Chairman Najam Sethi has
taken a U-turn from his
say that the first series
between the two nations
was very much on to take
games were to be played in
KARACHI: Famous
British auctioneer Richard
Madley is on his way to
Bangalore (was scheduled
to reach there on
Thursday) to play off the
field in IPL in front of an
audience this weekend.
Speaking exclusively,
he said, "just like the last
ten years I am equally
excited by the prospect of
conducting the eleventh
IPL auction. Back in 2008
I had no idea that this
would become a permanent
fixtures on the world
cricket calendar. No one
foresaw how big this event
would become -with the
tour was postponed.
Pakistan have successfully
held the matches
against World XI and Sri
Lanka so far. However, the
West Indies Players
Association (WIPA) had
sought a security and risk
assessment from Eastern
Star International (ESI), an
cricketing world following
the bidding with interest
and excitement".
"This year's auction
will be the biggest yet
with the purse rising ever
higher due to new broadcasting
rights.We can
therefore expect some
high prices to be paid.
The bidders have
become more savvy over
the years and it is noticeable
how their bidding
strategies have developed.
", he believes.
"There will be highs
and lows - surprises and
disappointments- in this
auction -just like in previous
years. In this weekend's
auction "Right to
match" will be an important
aspect which will
keep me alert throughout".
Madley returned to
watch IPL games on three
occasions -including
South Africa in IPL 2. He
watches many games live
on TV in the UK.
His reputation as the
IPL auctioneer means that
he is less likely to work in
rival leagues.
"The most memorable
auction will always be the
first in 2008. No one had
any idea what was going to
happen that day - including
the franchise holders, players,
organisers and the auc-
independent security firm
owned by security expert
Reg Dickason. They gave
a green signal after the
security check and the
Defending champion Roger
Federer strolled into the
Australian Open final in a
bitter-sweet win after Chung
Hyeon's retired injured in
their semi-final on Friday.
The Swiss star was leading
6-1, 5-2 when the South
Korean called it quits with
foot blisters and will now
face Marin Cilic in Sunday's
final.
Chung, the first South
Korean man or woman to
play in a Grand Slam semifinal,
was treated in a medical
timeout for the left foot
problem two games earlier.
But it came as a big surprise
when the 21-year-old
walked to the net at 30-30
and trailing 2-5 after 1hr
concede defeat.
It put Federer into his
seventh Australian final as
he chases his sixth
played professionally in
before the Morocco tournament
has worked to their
concept was created by
Lalit Modi all those years
'Dangerous' pitch
stops S.Africa v
India Test
JOHANNESBURG:
Play was called off
because of a dangerous
pitch at Wanderers
Stadium on Friday after
South African batsman
Dean Elgar was hit on the
grille of his helmet by a
short ball.
Umpires Aleem Dar and
Ian Gould had consulted
earlier because of unusual
bounce and deviation on a
pitch which former Indian
captain Sunil Gavaskar
described as "dangerous".
After Elgar was struck
late in the afternoon by a
sharply lifting delivery
from India's Jasprit
Bumrah, match referee
Andy Pycroft joined the
umpires on the field and
the third day of the third
and final Test was halted.
South Africa, set 241 to
win, were 17 for one.
Only two Test matches
have previously been abandoned
because of dangerous
conditions.
In January 1998,
England were 17 for three
against the West Indies at
Sabina Park in Jamaica
when the umpires stopped
play because of a hazardous
pitch.
MELBOURNE: India's
defeated the Spanish-
Brazilian duo of Maria Jose
In the final, the Indo-
Brazilian duo will face
Canada's Gabriela
Bopanna won the French
Open last year, and Croatia's
Mate Pavic. Dabrowski and
book their place in the title
tournament will be held as
per schedule. In a press
conference, Sethi confirmed
the series for this
year and even mentioned
about the triangular series
that will be held at Florida.
“It’s on so far, and by
that, I mean even the dates
are final. Earlier, we had a
plan that West Indies
would come here every
single year and we would
go to America to play a
triangular series. But
when we did our calculations,
we found out that
matches here are lossmaking
and they (West
Indies) thought it would
be a profit-making. The
reason is the high production
cost and player cost.”
