Activity name: Mental mapping
Aim of the activity: To show
how youngster live cities and
Materials: Papers post-it, pens,
felt pens, pencils
Methods step by step: The activity is very easy and does not require any specific prior knowledge.
It can be divided in 3 moments.
1. Introduction. The methodology is explained. Participants are asked to draw a map of their
city/neighborhood according to their personal life as youngsters. They do not have to
follow any physical element or cardinal points, but only express their subjectivity. They
can use colors, post-its and various types of paper and they can also use their smartphone
if they wish.
2. Activity. Participants draw their map individually or in small groups (2/3 people). It would
be best to have a facilitator per each group.
Discussion. Participants discuss their maps together with the facilitators and try to describe what
they depicted. It might be useful to arrive to a general conclusion which includes the most
important elements of each map.
Tangible results: Mental mapping would help youngsters to understand what advantages and
drawbacks mark their life in the city and how to solve them.
