Ash Wednesday Feb. 14
The act of marking ourselves with ashes at the
beginning of Lent is an ancient tradition. It invites
us to recall our beginnings and our humility in
relationship with God. This outward sign is not
worn to brag to the world of our faithfulness but
quite the opposite to say to the world we recognize
our humanity and give thanks for God’s unending
forgiveness.
Wednesday morning, our ministers will be in the
Community Park at 7:30 am, offering ashes to our
community as they begin the day. Wednesday
evening, there will be a worship service in the
sanctuary at 7 p.m.
Our scriptures for that day are:
Joel 2:1-17
Psalm 51:1-17
Matthew 6:1-6; 16-24
THE MESSENGER | WORSHIP
SEASON OF LENT COOK'S CORNER
The season of Lent reflects the times in our lives when we are shaken to the core, thinking even God
has abandoned us, and yet somehow a glimmer of hope shines through. Through the deadest of times,
there is hope for resurrection and new life.
Like Advent, we call Lent a season of preparation. Both seasons contain a call to repentance, strengthening our
awareness that we need God. By honest reflection upon who we are and an embracing of God’s forgiving love,
we are preparing for the joy of Easter and resurrection. Our Lenten experiences of darkness and grief call
us to appreciate the glimmer of light even more. These six weeks are not ends in themselves. They offer the
vision to see God’s amazing gift of life beyond death, wholeness out of brokenness and hope beyond despair.
The Lenten Journey opens our eyes to that pinprick of Holy Light through our grief, through our sacrifices,
through our struggles, through our sadness, and through our frustrations – both personal and corporate.
The Sundays of Lent are often called mini-Easters, for if one is fasting, Sunday is a day to receive the
nourishment you need to continue the fast. Sundays in Lent remind us of what is coming – resurrection and
hope. These Lenten Sundays do not hide from the Lenten journey, rather they are to sustain us as we explore
deeper and deeper into our relationship with God.
Our Wednesday evening gatherings for a light supper and program will provide us opportunities for
fellowship, spiritual growth and discussion. Holy Week concludes our Lenten journey and through the
transition to Easter morning step into the last days of Jesus and into the mystery of Easter morning.
Grace and Peace,
Dottie
On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Brite Divinity School and Texas Christian
University, we invite you to campus for three days of inspiring worship, thoughtprovoking
lectures, enriching workshops and an uplifting organ recital and hymn
sing. This year, in the midst of uncertainty and social division, we reflect on the call of
Jeremiah to seek the shalom of the place in which we find ourselves for in its shalom, we
find our own (Jeremiah 29:7). Our preacher is Rev. Fredrick Haynes and plenary speakers
are Andrew Root, Scott Bader-Saye, and Shelly Matthews.
As this event is a gift from Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University and University Christian Church
there is no general registration fee; however, pre-registration is encouraged.
We look forward to seeing you at Ministers Week 2018!
FASTING ROB LANEY
"Fasting makes our lives ripe for surprise..."
Dear Worshiping Community, the month of February marks
our annual shift into Lent and a new mindfulness. Our choral
anthems and service music reflect this change of vision:
How do we sing into a place of intentional hunger? How do
we make a music of nagging detoxification that helps our
soul come clean? Fasting makes our lives ripe for surprise.
The discipline of putting aside pleasure prepares our hearts
for growth. As we do each Lenten season we will speak and
not sing the Lord’s Prayer. We again join our voices together
through this time of sacrifice and prayer
JOIN THE "INN" CROWD IN FEBRUARY
During the 4 weeks left in our winter Room in the Inn
season, we have plenty of opportunities in which to
practice offering hospitality, intentional listening & being
present.
It can be as simple as: Preparing a side dish or picking
up ice cream to complete a dinner; setting tables; making
beds; sitting down to a community meal; picking up or
dropping off a few of our guests; spending a night on
a comfy twin bed (thanks to our new bed platforms);
preparing a part of breakfast before heading off into your
day energized; folding a load of clean laundry as a quiet
evening meditation! — all ordinary, everyday tasks, when
done with love, allow us to experience the blessings of
being in community.
Online sign up is always available on the SHCC website @
