What are the aims of this course?<br />

Design & Technology is part of our everyday life and it’s constantly evolving. This D&T GCSE will prepare<br />

students to participate confidently and successfully in this increasingly technological world. The course<br />

focuses on developing practical skills within a particular material area, allowing students to manufacture high<br />

quality outcomes. The new GCSE places great emphasis on understanding and applying the design processes.<br />

Students will use their creativity & imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant<br />

problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.<br />

Design & Technology can set you up for a career in a wide variety of industries such as Construction Trade,<br />

Advertising, Media, Engineering, Architecture, IT and even Education.<br />

Popular careers for people with design & technology qualifications include: carpentry and joinery product or<br />

graphic designer, architect.<br />

What will I study?<br />

Students will study and learn from wider influences on Design & Technology including historical, social,<br />

cultural, environmental and economic factors. They will get the opportunity to work creatively when<br />

designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise to timbers or polymers.<br />

They’ll gain an understanding of commercial processes and careers in related industries, as well as<br />

developing core transferable skills, such as teamwork and communication.<br />

How will I be assessed?<br />

The GCSE course is split into a final 2 hour examination (50%) and a non-examined project<br />

The Exam will assess:<br />

Core technical principles<br />

Specialist technical principles<br />

Designing and making principles<br />

Non-Exam assessment will include a design and make task which will assess:<br />

Identifying and investigating design possibilities<br />

Producing a design brief and specification<br />

Generating design ideas<br />

Developing design ideas<br />

Realising design ideas<br />

Analysing & evaluating<br />

Students will produce a prototype product and a portfolio of evidence.<br />
