I can’t quite believe that my first term at Wilnecote has finished. It has gone by
in a flash and I am pretty sure that our Year 11s, looking forward to their exams,
will agree with my perception of time. May I take this opportunity to thank all our
staff, students, parents, carers and the Wilnecote community in general for the
warm welcome I have received. I know that there are many more people I have yet
to meet who contribute to The Wilnecote School in one way or another and I am
looking forward to extending my reach into the community over the coming weeks
and months.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to another edition of the Wilnecote
Warbler. It is packed with the exciting things which have happened this half term
and I am in awe of the range and depth of some of the experiences and activities
our students have been involved in. The German Exchange was a very significant event for me, guardian as I now
am of a tradition which dates back over thirty years. I was made aware by those involved of just how many strong
international friendships have arisen as they told me stories which demonstrated the longevity and strength of
the relationships they have built. I know many people are looking forward to the return trip in September.
Thank you once again for your support in the education of our children. The Wilnecote School is well on it’s way to
becoming an outstanding school in the future. This journey would not be possible without your vital support and
mandate for change.
Best wishes
Two terms down, one to go! Thoughts have to be with our current Year 11 as they enter the most important
term of their time at Wilnecote; make sure you spend your time productively and constructively over
Easter, but also, having put in the hours of revision, that you have a well-earned and deserved break. “Well
done’s” are in order to all students at school, as you continue to impress with consistently fantastic behaviour
and attitudes to learning.
On the topic of fantastic students... The Student Voice have been hard at work focusing on a range of different
areas of school improvement. They have already put forward a house competition set to be completed
in the last two weeks of term involving creating a likeness of a celebrity from plastic eggs, egg-cellent
work!
The Student Voice’s overall objective is to give students a real input on how we as a school function
putting across a range of different ways we can be a better school for our students. They take this duty very
seriously and are working extremely hard to help make the school reflective of our students thoughts and
feelings.
There will definitely be more to come from these groups and hopefully you will notice the growing presence
of the student voice within the school.
Have a very happy Easter and see you back here for the summer term!

Year 9 Careers Fair
The whole of Year 9 visited the Tamworth Schools
Careers Fair on Thursday 15th March. The students
were challenged to ‘engage and seek out
information’ from employers and further education
providers as they began to explore what is involved
in seeking out opportunities for their future. Each
Year 9 student was provided with a prompt sheet
to give them some sample questions to ask each
of the exhibitors and they were asked to record
the answers they gave.
The event itself was attended by over 1,200 students
from each of the Tamworth schools.
Feedback from the students was very positive
and they very much enjoyed the event.
Athletics Champion
Year 7, Brooke Burton has just won three awards for athletics.
She is no stranger to picking up awards - having done so
before, but over the past two weeks she has added three more
to her growing collection. Having competed recently at her club,
Birchfield Harriers, Brooke won the awards for her sprinting,
having put in over two years of hard training (since she began
in 2016) she is now seeing the rewards from all her hard work.
Congratulations to Brooke for all that she has achieved.
School Library
The library is now open to students every
morning from 8.15am. Students can
come in and quiz on Accelerated Reader or
do homework and print it out.
Don’t forget the library is also open every
lunchtime for Year 7 students and Monday,
Wednesday and Thursday for all other year
groups.

German Exchange
Tuesday 13th March we welcomed our German Exchange
On pupils and teachers from Bad Laasphe. There was an excellent
atmosphere as pupils greeted their partners with many older pupils
excited to see their friends from Germany and younger pupils ready
to form new friendships with their new partners. Following this was a
very successful project day where both German and English students
demonstrated fantastic team work, creativity and language skills as
they designed and presented apps that they would like to have to
help with exchanges like ours. It was Natalie Davis, Rosie Reeves,
Elizabeth Edwards and their German partners who showed strength in
all areas throughout the
day and won the overall
prize! In addition, pupils
were then given the
chance to experience
some British history and
culture together with a
trip to Warwick Castle.
Pupils took the time
not only to learn about
the history of Warwick
Castle but used the
day as an opportunity
to form bonds between
themselves and their
partners. It was a fantastic day and all pupils were a credit to their schools. Our German visitors also had
the chance to experience a day in the life of a Wilnecote pupil taking part in various different lessons. At
the weekend our exchange pupils had the chance to experience family life in Britain and see the different
things our country has to offer. As always it was an emotional goodbye for some as we waved our visitors
off on Sunday afternoon.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, students and their families who took part in and
supported the exchange this year – it has been greatly appreciated!
Miss Neville
Wilnecote Wolves are formed and training has
Wolves on the RunThe begun.
In June, 12 of us are going to be taking on the
challenging 10K Wolf Run course. For many of the
team it will be their first time ever entering an obstacle
course race. It will push most to their physical limits
and it will be a challenge like nothing they have done
before.
To ensure we all finish the course, we have all started
doing varying levels of training. One part of this is a
weekly outdoor session in the school grounds. We
have not let the recent extreme weather conditions
put us off either. A wolf run will go ahead despite the
weather and so the Wilnecote Wolves will train!

Willkommen im Deutschunterricht
Students from Mrs. Whiffin’s year 7 German class spent a lesson interviewing 4 German students from
Bad Laasphe. Their super cool German skills meant that they were able to ask the
questions in German and understand the responses they were given. Our students
have typed up those responses. Have a read. Even if you have no knowledge of
German, you may be pleasantly surprised with how much you understand. Can you
work out what 10 questions the German students were asked?
As well as training, we are also raising money ahead
of our race day as a team. We chose Birmingham
Children’s Hospital as our chosen charity and we have
already raised £100 which is fantastic. We chose the
hospital as it has been vital to some of our students
and the families in our local community and, whilst we
hope it wont be the case, we know other students
and families may need to rely on their services in the
future.
Lord of the Flies
The Actors
LLord of the Flies is a play based on William Golding’s 1954
novel. The play is set sometime in the future when all the
children have been evacuated because of the war in England.
After the plane crashes on a desert island and all the adults
have died the children are stranded fighting for survival.
The island’s leader Rachel was played by Lucy Taylor who is in Year 9. This was Lucy’s first main role in a school play
and she did an excellent job in portraying the struggles of Rachel trying to keep the group together.
‘
When I found out I had the role I did some research into the story and the characters, so I watched the film and read the
book so I knew what Rachel was like and how to portray her.’ Commented Lucy.
The other leader – who is much meaner – is Jackie, who was played by Bryony Watts in Year 8. Bryony previously
played the Red Queen in last year’s Alice in Wonderland and throughout the play kept up Jackie’s cruel and nasty streak.
‘It was so much fun to play a character who’s so different from me (in the real world) and you can do so much with an evil
character.’ Said Bryony.
The innocent Piggy was played by Jack Johnson in Year 11. Jack has been in the school show for the past three
years and played the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland last year. For the whole of his performance, Jack played Piggy
excellently by keeping his down to earth characteristics throughout the whole show.Jack said, ‘It was a great experience
to work together with such a fantastic cast.’
Other Characters included Lucy Williams (Year 11) as the shy and sensitive Simone, Maisie Hudson (Year 11) as
Jackie’s sidekick Riley, Brett Hawkes (Year 8) as the young and curious Percival, Sam Martin (Year 8) and Erin Shingler
(Year 9) as twins Sam and Erin, Keeley Brown (Year 11) and Mia McAnenny as Jackie’s followers Billie and Hayley.
The cast started rehearsing in September and spent the past six months pulling the show together. Erin Shingler
(Year 9) who played Erin said ‘I really enjoyed rehearsals. It was quite daunting to begin with but after getting to know
everyone it was amazing!’
Rehearsals
The cast spent two to three hours every week in rehearsals and even more for the main cast who then spent
their spare time learning lines at home. Lucy Taylor (Year 9) who played Rachel said ‘I spent a lot of time learning my lines
because a lot of the interactions throughout the play are with my character.’ After Christmas the cast started rehearsing
without their scripts to help them learn their lines and prepare for performing the play. The cast also started having late
night rehearsals on Friday nights and all day rehearsals on Saturday to get in some extra practice before opening night.
While all of this was happening Mr Thomas was hard at work with his students designing and pulling the set together. The
set was amazing and really reflected the show as it was designed so the audience could tell what parts of the island the
cast were on at different times during the show. Abbie Edwards (Year 10) who worked on the set said ‘I loved working on
the set because I helped with it last year and it was so much fun.’
On Monday 12th February the cast started their tech runs. The tech runs were when the cast could figure out
where to be when the lighting changed and gave them more of a real feel to how the show would be when they performed
it that week. The tech runs also gave Carl Savage and his tech team an opportunity to take photos and videos of the
cast in action. They only had a day and a half to finish the lighting and sound until the dress rehearsal when the Year 5
children from Wilnecote Junior School came up to watch the show. This was the first time the cast performed in front of
an audience and the primary school children really enjoyed it.
Highlights
The show ran for three nights, Keeley Brown (Year 11) said ‘As it was my finale year it was great to get a speaking
role and I was nervous at the start but once we started the performance you forgot about the audience and just played
your role.’
Every night the cast would open and close the show with the same amount of effort and passion for what they
were performing even though the plot was dark and scary. The portrayal of the children on this island was so realistic and
watching it you could really see the time and effort that went into the show.
Some highlights from the show include Simone’s monologue in Act Two when she has a breakdown. Lucy Williams
(Year 11) who played Simone said ‘Seeing as my monologue is quite creepy it felt really good to give a realistic performance
and to scare the audience.’ Other highlights were Simone’s tragic death at the end of Act Two when she is killed by the
rest of the children believing that she is the beast, Piggy’s death in Act Three when Jackie and her gang push Piggy off a
cliff, and the dramatic end of the play when the Naval Officer (played by Mr Adams) rescues the children.
Mr Adams (Deputy Head) said; “It was really enjoyable to have the opportunity to work with students that I
wouldn’t normally get to interact with; it was such a fantastic experience. The drama department, led by Miss Julius and
all the staff and students involved in the show should be congratulated on such a superb effort this year. The material is
very intense and they all applied themselves superbly. A very big ‘well done’ to everyone”

Resilience and persistence
Athletics is a physical and mental challenge that puts
an individual against other individuals; Sportshall athletics
is different. There are no individual titles to be won,
instead a team competes against other teams to score
more points in a series of indoor track and field events.
The Wilnecote School Year 7 Girls have been training as
a team since October, attending club sessions regularly
with everyone learning every event. With fitness levels
rising and experience being gained they successfully negotiated
the District round winning through to the County
Championships in Stoke to represent Tamworth.
The squad of 8 athletes prepared themselves for the
challenge, by competing against the boys and other year
groups. Encouraged by their success confidence was
growing as the finals drew closer.
Experience has taught the team, that they all needed to
perform at their full potential, to gain as many points as
possible in all 12 events; but after the news that illness
meant a team member was unable to compete, nerves
and doubts were starting to creep in.
Using their training session results, a quick re-jig of the
team meant that several members had to fill the gaps and
compete in less familiar events.
The girls showed their true talent across each event

creates County Champions
and scored the highest points in the county; resulting in
winning the county title, a stunning trophy and an individual
medal for each athlete. The girls truly deserved this
success and have proved that it is true … practice does
make perfect.
What was the secret to their success? Everyone in the
team was as important as the next. The girls worked with
resilience, digging in hard when training got tough and
showed persistence to master technique and apply the
appropriate race tactics.
This is a team that showed that hard work and dedication
does pay off and that supporting each other does
lead to success. We are very proud of their achievement
and can’t wait to see what these girls can do over the
next few months as athletics competitions restart after
Easter. Resilience and persistence creates County Champions
Are they proud? Oh yes, most of them still carry their
medals around in their school bag!
Well done to the whole squad and congratulations from
everyone at The Wilnecote School.
Team Members: Chloe Bishop, Lydia-Grace Blaney,
Brooke Burton, Kaitlyn Childs, Elizabeth Edwards, Lottie
McLaren, Millie Watton.

GCSE French Trip
From the 14th – 17th February, a group of 39 students together with Mrs Hill, Mrs Day and Mr Beck had a
fantastic trip to the Château de Grand Romaine in France.
The trip, which was intended to give students the opportunity to use and improve their language skills as
well as experience the culture, was a huge success.
Though we only had 4 days, we certainly made the most of them, participating in a variety of activities
(we even sneaked in a visit to a chocolate factory on the outward journey). Amongst the highlights was the
visit to the Palace of Versailles, which we all really enjoyed and even a bit of cold weather could not take
away from such a beautiful place.
We were particularly proud of the students on the day of the ‘Preparez à manger’ task. This involved students
going to a local market town and buying the ingredients for a meal that they had to prepare and then
present in French. The chef at the centre, who judged the competition, said that our school was one of the
best he had ever seen and the students really took the opportunity to speak the language, not just in the
presentation, but when buying the ingredients too.
On the last day we had a visit to Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, which gave us all the opportunity to take some
beautiful photos.
In the evenings, students took part in a variety of activities ranging from a photo competition to some
very memorable party games, including a bin bag fashion show – where again the students took the opportunity
to practise their French.
Mrs Hill would like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs Day and Mr Beck for their support with the trip
but the biggest thank you goes to our year 10 and 11 students, who were truly a credit to themselves and
the Wilnecote School.

Year 7 and Year 8 Doddle is a new innovation at The Wilnecote School this year and we are excited
about how it can be used to help students make real progress. It also allows you, as parents, to support
your child more fully in their learning. We hope that you will use Doddle on a regular basis and, for more
information or if you have any comments or queries or a reminder on your Parent Key, please visit our
Performing Arts
This half term GCSE Drama students have been fortunate enough to go on not one but two trips.
Year 10 and 11 students travelled down to Fallow Cross, the home of Theatre Company Punchdrunk
where they participated in a workshop led by a member of the company. Punchdrunk specialise in immersive,
site-specific theatre and as such students entered the world of Fallow Cross, a unique performance venue
designed especially for the company. During the two and a half hour workshop students participated in warmups
and movement exercises before working in pairs to devise their own short performance sequence. It
was a fantastic experience, which all the students enjoyed and learnt a lot from.
The students also had the opertunity to go to The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry where they watched a
production of the acclaimed play “The Play That Goes Wrong”. The play, which is a comedy about an amateur
dramatic society who put on a production which goes terribly and hilariously wrong, was really entertaining. It
also had so many things that students can write about in their upcoming exam, from the set which fell apart
to the audience interaction before we had even taken our seats. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon
and students behaved brilliantly, proving themselves to be excellent ambassadors for the school.

Please look carefully over the Information for Candidates form which you received on
the Year 11 Conference day and which is also available on the school website. This form
outlines all the rules and regulations of the exams.
Good luck in your exams!!!
Miss Brolan

The Year 11 Boy’s football team booked their place in The
Good Friday Fazeley Shield football final with a comfortable
4-0 victory over local district rival LFA QEMS.
Wilnecote began the game much ‘the brighter’ and this was
evident as they retained and dominated possession in the
early stages and also matched LFA QEMS physically.
The breakthrough and opening goal came midway through
the first half. After much possession, Wilnecote increased
the tempo of their play and a quicker ball forward from midfield
to Will Kerley saw a good attacking combination of play and
culminated in a key pass being made behind the LFA QEMS
defence for Hector Williams to finish coolly past the opposition goalkeeper
to make it 1-0.
Wilnecote’s second goal saw provider Will Kerley become goal scorer and
a similar build-up of play moved the LFA QEMS defence across the pitch to
cause space for a through ball for Will Kerley to latch onto as he lashed the
ball home from inside the penalty area to make it 2-0.
The game wasn’t without LFA QEMS attacks though and Tom Hickey made
a goal line clearance from a QEMS corner to keep the score at 2-0 which it
remained until half time.
The second half was a repeat of the first with Wilnecote again dominating
possession and you had the feeling they could have scored more on the
night if they engaged in more forward passing. After good periods of
retaining and building play, Will Kerley combined with Kieran Whelan in an
intricate move to out fox the LFA QEMS defence and make it 3-0.
Wilnecote’s fourth came from a world class strike from Will Kerley 10 minutes from time. After another
lengthy period of Wilnecote possession, Will picked the ball up 25 yards out from goal near the corner of the
18 yard box and with no real imminent danger to the QEMS goal he quickly cut inside an opposition player and
rifled an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the goal and crowned off the evening with the goal of the
game to firmly book Wilnecote’s place in the Fazeley Shield Final to be played on Good Friday.
Up next for Wilnecote, in the Good Friday’s final is Rawlett. The game will be played at New Mill Lane,
home of Coton Green FC with a kick off time 10:30am. Its £3 to get in and we’d love to have as much
support as possible!!

Focus on Girls P.E.
This term has seen record numbers of girls attending extra curricular
clubs, and despite the weather, competing against other schools
in the District and across the county.
The last of the netball fixtures are set to be played after the Easter
break and should see all teams beating their previous year’s results
with increased number of wins and more goals being scored.
Numbers attending badminton club are at record levels with the
Tuesday training session now being split into two to allow all students
to get enough court time!
Key Stage 3 girls became District Badminton champions again
and faced the best of Staffordshire in the County Finals and proved
themselves to be more than able to play at County level despite
half the team being a year younger than most of the competitors.
Congratulations again girls - next season is looking really exciting with
the target to return to the County finals again as District Champions.
Year 11 girls finished their last ever season representing The
Wilnecote School as District Badminton Champions and reaching
the County finals for the fourth year running. This group of girls have
shown exactly how dedication and mental toughness helps you to
achieve success. The consistency that they have shown over the
past four years is a reflection of the commitment they have given to
training and the outstanding teamwork of all the players.
The squad of players is large, they compete hard against each
other to make a strong squad from which to select a team. We are
extremely proud of their achievements over the years - it really is the
end of an era!
Fortunately the team is forward thinking and in a bid to maintain
the quality of badminton and the dominance of The Wilnecote School
within the District have been working with our younger students to
help shape our teams for next year. A big thank you to Beth Harriott
who has been operating ‘master classes’ for our KS3 students,
fingers crossed it will make the difference for further success next
year.
Congratulations to all players involved since the early days to today
namely Beth Harriott (Captain) Holly Lawton, Maddison Lee, Eve
Rowley, Isabelle Smith, Megan Bamsey, Jodie Beasley & Abby Worrall.
We shall miss your energy and commitment to badminton and hope
that you continue to play in the future. Not so sure that we will miss
some of the drama’s, injuries or your terrible top volume singing all
way to Stoke and back again but we’ll definitely miss our celebratory
meals and the gossip!
