This is a good way to spend 20 bucks. It’s a lively

basically fruit-driven, ripe and bright... Just good 

drinking in a medium-weight manner. Just enough 

‘interest’ too.

2015 

...herb-infused red-black cherries, a trace of 

graphite, and both a suppleness to the palate and 

a crunchiness to the finish. You can sink into it, and 

you can chew on it. The core of fruit is good but 

savouriness is where it’s at. Everything here feels 

authentic. It’s excellent buying/drinking but then. 

when Fourth Wave is involved, we almost always 

conclude that.

That said, this 2015 release is one out of the box. They’ve nailed 

this release. It’s jubey and berried and has a good bit of chew 

to the finish. It’s a generous style with a good sense of shape. 

There’s a nod to savouriness but no more than that: it’s all berried 

goodness, and beautifully well crafted at that.

The oldest cellars in Rioja, Condes de los Andes has been 

painstakingly restored by the Murua family. In addition to 

kilometres of tunnels and over one hundred thousand bottles 

under cellar, Condes de los Andes has a purpose built boutique 

winery dedicated to small batch hand crafted wines. 

Condes de Los Andes 2013: There’s Rioja and there’s Rioja. Much 

of it is overblown with oak; this one isn’t. It’s grown on 50-year-old 

vines. Power and finesse. Depth and a certain lightness of touch. 

Sweetness but a coffee-bean, almost rustic savouriness. You can 

describe it in many ways but the end conclusion is that this wine 

is blessed with tannin and flavour while remaining perfumed, 

juicy and immediately appealing. Indeed it’s charming. It’s 

simultaneously fresh, complex and persistent. It’s a beauty.

don’t really matter: it’s frisky and fruity and has enough length to satisfy. The 

score doesn’t really matter but the take home does: it’s hard to go wrong here.

Hootenanny Sauvignon Blanc 2016 

Tartan-decked wine label; a sure 

conversation starter. Plenty of punchy fruit 

but dry and gravelly to finish. It’s a pretty 

easy wine to both admire and enjoy. Tropical 

fruit meets lemongrass, anise and assorted 

gravelly/smoky notes. The finish is taut in a 

juicy way. There’s very good drinking to be 

had here.

The Payada is a competitive composing and 

singing of verses native to Argentina, usually 

accompanied by guitar. The performer is called 

a Payador and in performances two or more 

payadores will compete to produce the most 

eloquent verse, each answering questions 

posed by the other, often insulting. 

El Payador is a contemporary and fruit driven 

Argentinian Malbec created in partnership 

with third generation Mendoza winemaker 

Jorge Daniel Falasco. The wine is sourced from 

a single high altitude vineyard at over twelve 

hundred metres above sea level and primarily 

matured in season French oak.
