Have you ever wondered who invented 3D imaging? Or when it was
invented? When we think of 3D imaging we see that as a very modern, very
late 20th or 21st century advancement. Nothing as modern and new as 3D
imaging could have been invented before then, right? Wrong. The first ever
three-dimensional (3D) imaging device was invented in 1838 by Sir Charles
Wheatstone, and was called a stereoscope. This means that 3D imaging has
been around for over one hundred and seventy-five years. By looking through
the stereoscope the pictures, or slides, appear to be three dimensional, the
same way 3D glasses work today.
Pictures are mounted on slides to be viewed by the stereoscope. To
create a slide, first two cameras have to be set up slightly apart, so that they
work like our eyes. Next they have to photograph the same image, at the
same time. Then the photographs are developed and mounted onto a slide,
side-by-side. When the images are viewed through the stereoscope, using a
combination of lenses and prisms, the two views become one, which appears
to be three dimensional.
Over the years a number of modifications have been made to the stereoscope.
For example here at the Museum of the Albemarle, we have currently
on display in the Our Story exhibit a stereoscope that dates to 1903.
This stereoscope looks considerably different than the one invented by Sir
Wheatstone. The model at the Museum is a Holmes Model, invented by Oliver
Wendell Holmes.
So, the next time you are wondering about modern technology, stop and
think just how modern it is, because all modern technology might be older
than you think.

Your healthy immune system usually recognizes when something is amiss. In my May article ( See
www.albemarletradewinds.com.) I talked about antibiotics in the food chain and how it compromises
your immune system.
Connecting the dots. The government allowable contamination standard for raw poultry is 25% or
less. That’s 1 in 4 birds. What with chicken parts and cross-contamination, well, you do the math.
There isn’t a “no zero tolerance policy”, and the USDA doesn’t have recall authority. So, if a packer
or processor exceeds the standard, you probably won’t know until it’s consumed. That means your
immune system is always working, and poultry is probably a better option than red meat, or shellfish.
Knowing what we know about how the immune system is trained by the bacteria in the gut, and how
antibiotics indiscriminately kills bacteria, some of whose job is to protect you from carcinogenics and
anything else that might be underlying like shingles (measles virus), its easy to reason that what you
consume might be killing the trainers.
We now have the phenomena of antibiotic resistance as a result of antibiotic overuse. What do you do
if an exotic organism such as MERS enters the country? What does the Healthcare/Medical community
have in its arsenal to address a potential epidemic/pandemic if antibiotics are not effective?
Now a little politics. I am a retired federal bureaucrat, and a free market advocate. In the aforementioned
I described how government policy, by not requiring identification of antibiotics in our food, is
complicit in the harm that’s being done to the consuming public. Consequently, if government policy
is making you ill, its criminal to make you pay to get well. Fifty percent of the healthcare in the United
States is single payer (Medicare,Medicaid, Tricare, and C.H.I.P.S.) and rising. The other 50% is a bureaucratic
nightmare, authored by special interest. Consider this, the IRS will be scrutinizing anyone
who’s healthcare has been subsidized by the ACA/Obamacare. How can that dual system possibly be
managed? Just saying.
Finally, a shout out to the Diagnostic Imaging Department of Sentara Albemarle Medical Center.
As a cancer survivor and advocate, I frequent a lot of facilities for various services and treatment. I
was very impressed with their professionalism and courtesy.
Orthodox Christianity
The following talk was delivered by the author in 2014 to an
Orthodox group at a federal prison in North Carolina. I want to say
a few words, share a few thoughts on these very deep matters, on sin
and the Fall. I want to talk about how we understand these in the
Way, in Orthodoxy. Firstly, let me ask, what do we mean by “sin?”
You know, in the West they mean something different than what we
mean in Orthodoxy. A lot of people think that the Catholics and the
Orthodox are similar—in fact, this is what the Catholics think—even
the Pope! But the Orthodox say that the Catholics and the Protestants
are, in very important ways, similar to each other, and quite different
from us. The understanding of sin is one important example of this.
In the West, where the thinking is so legalistic, as if God were a lawyer or an executioner, the idea
of sin is deeply tied up with the notions of intent and culpability. While Orthodoxy recognizes that
these factors are important, it sees the whole matter in a much deeper and more comprehensive way.
The Greek word for sin is hamartia, meaning, “to miss the mark.” While hamartia may involve
wrong intent and culpability, it has much wider connotations. It also speaks to all the unintended
consequences of acts. Clearly, from all our acts there ripple out into the universe a vast array of
consequences, most unintended and unforeseeable. Before the Fall, such was not the case: all wills
moved in full participation in the Divine will, which included and understood and contained all
things. Nothing was unintended or unforeseen or at cross-purposes.
And—more importantly for us, I think—hamartia also speaks to our interior dispositions: our proclivities,
our tendencies, our inclinations; what I would call our inner landscape.
In the Orthodox understanding, before the Fall, Adam’s will was always fully in accord with God’s
will. Adam had a will, but it always chose to be in accord with God’s will and so, maybe it wasn’t
even apparent that Adam had a separate will. But at some point Adam chose something other than
God’s will; his will diverged from God’s will, and this opened a window, a tear, a crack, a wound in
the fabric of the universe; and through this aperture darkness flowed into the world. And now the
universe is a battlefield, where the Light and the darkness contend. The darkness has infiltrated,
insinuated itself into all the fibers of the creation; into the atoms and the people and into their hearts
and thoughts and intentions that, in the primordial, natural state, were all light. Now in all the fibers
of the cosmos, and in our hearts, there’s war between Light and darkness. The psalmist
speaks of this hidden darkness; he speaks of “the lion that lurks in secret places…and would
consume much flesh.”
Lifted Trucks On The Outer Banks
By Robert Heikens
Life on the Outer Banks has many activities for all to enjoy, but some require the use of a four wheel drive vehicle. From viewing the wild horses
in Carova to fishing on the beach in Hatteras a four wheel drive vehicle is essential and makes the journey fun and enjoyable.
Lifted trucks with bigger than stock tires and rims have become the popular vehicle of choice for many of the locals. Business and independent
enthusiasts have built some of the safest and best looking trucks in area. Johnny Heilig of Rebel Rides and Tommy Ayers of TMX Motorsports
are some of the professional that are able to do anything from lift kits to total custom truck builds. Amateur builders such as Eddie Wissman of
Spare Parts Racing Team build their trucks to race at the local Muddy Motor Sports and Morgan’s Corner race venues.
The storms that the Outer Banks encounters sometimes make the roads in the area impassable. Lifted trucks are the only way for some residents
to get to grocery stores, take loved ones to the doctor and get essential goods to the areas cut off from any other regular forms of transportation.
The lifted truck community, whether it be the professional builder or the amateur have made the Outer Banks easily accessible for all to enjoy!
Keep on wheeling folks and stay safe!

Happy 4th of July!
By Rosie Hawthorne
Kitchensaremonkeybusiness.com
I have a special dish I make for any type of celebration - Memorial Day picnics, Labor Day parties, Neighborhood Block Parties, and, of course,
the Fourth of July. It’s a layered tortilla dish with black beans, corn, and cheeses and it’s always a hit with everyone. If you want to make a
quicker version of this, you could use canned corn instead of fresh, but when corn is in season, I go with fresh. As for beans, I always use dried
beans – I don’t like canned. I must present this particular dish with a caveat: If you make this for an occasion, you will be expected to make it
forever for subsequent occasions. Consider yourself forewarned.
Rosie’s Corn And Black Bean Tortilla Pie
2 cups black beans, cooked
(That’s one cup of dried beans.)
2 cups fresh corn
(That’s about 3 ears.)
1 cup chopped onion
1⁄2 cup diced multicolored sweet peppers
3 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese
3 cups pepper Jack cheese
3 cups grated cheddar cheese
(One can never have too much cheese.)
2 TB unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp cayenne powder
1 jalapeño, finely chopped
1 package extra large flour tortillas
Whenever I cook beans, I don’t bother soaking them overnight. I pour the beans into boiling water, then reduce to simmer. Simmer about 25
minutes, drain and rinse the beans, refresh the water, return the beans to the pot, and simmer until just tender. According to Julia Child,
refreshing the beans will help cut down on “intestinal motility.” I like my beans al dente, so about 25 more minutes of simmering. Taste test.
Season with Kosher salt. Drain. For the corn, scrape the kernels off and sauté a couple of minutes in 1 TB unsalted butter and 1 TB oil over medium-high
heat. Season with Kosher salt.
In a bowl, combine beans, corn, onion, and peppers. Now you’re going to layer tortillas with the corn/bean mixture and cheese. Place a tortilla
on a greased baking sheet and sprinkle cheese on it. Next, add a cup or so of the corn/bean mixture and top with more cheese. The cheese is the
glue holding it together, so don’t be stingy. Add the next tortilla and repeat with the layers until you run out of everything. I always reserve
some of the corn/bean mixture and cheese for sprinkling on the top layer. Here’s a tip for layering: Add a little extra filling around the outside
of each layer. This helps to avoid “doming” when the pie cooks. When you get to the last layer, brush melted butter on top and sides. Dust top
and sides with cayenne and cumin. Sprinkle reserved corn/bean mixture and grated cheese and jalapeño on top. I used 7 tortillas in all for this
particular pie. Bake in a 325° oven for about 30 minutes or until it’s nicely browned on top. Check after 20 minutes, in case you need to tent it.
Let rest about twenty minutes before slicing. Note: If there’s any left, it’s even better the second day.
For more recipes, gardening shots, travelogues, and fun, please visit with Rosie at KitchensAreMonkeyBusiness.com. It’s a
Southern front porch type of visit.

Dr Crime - Legalizing Pot
Dear Dr. Crime: What is going on with the legalization of pot??!! What should we do here in NC? What do I tell my young son and daughter after
President Obama and Clinton admitted publically they smoked pot? What is the effect of pot? Help!! Confused and Angry Mother.
Dear Mother:
You have asked a lot and I will address first what for most parents is the most important question, “what do I tell my kid?”. My advice is to tell children
they must stay away from pot and other drugs as well. A good reason is that research shows that the kid’s brain will be maturing and changing into their
20s, and can be damaged by drugs in ways they would not want. The issues you raise go back a long way. See the May 2014 issue of Newsmax for a
review of the history of pot, including a discussion of the use of pot in our early colonial days. It was used for rope, clothing and for medicine. Pot was
recognized in the US as a dangerous drug as early 1906 with the federal Pure Food and Drug act. Yet use of pot for the medical use of cancer, epilepsy
and multiple sclerosis patients was and is difficult to reject. An October 2013 Gallup Poll found a majority of Americans favor decriminalization. Some
of that support came from the economists pointing out the inefficiency of spending over $40 billion on the “war on drugs”. Cleanly, Mother, it is confusing
for us as parents and as voters. I suggest you look at the current issue of Science News for as objective and research based review of the issues
as is current. That report cites the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s arguments that pot destroys memory, reduces IQ scores, and causes psychosis,
effects that are especially damaging for teens. Strong research shows the developing neural connections in the teen’s brain are damaged by pot. The
research is clear that as the teen use goes up, intelligence goes down. Also the studies of the states legalizing pot show that for children under 12, admission
to ERs for acute pot intoxication has gone up, and we know that the packaging of the legal pot looks like candy. A final research finding you should
know is that today’s pot is higher in THC (stronger) than past pot. So the dilemma facing you probably is not how to get rid of pot entirely, but how
to control it. For example, proper labeling could be required. For more information on this very important subject see http://bit.ly/SNpotNIDA and
Letting Go of What You
Want and Embrace What
You Deserve
Sometimes you have to forget
what you want to remember
what you deserve.
Sometimes life is about forgetting
what you want to remember
what you really deserve. There
are too many people who settle
for less, and don’t get from a
relationship what they deserve
because they think that they can
change someone into someone
who they want them to be.

Instead of trying to fix someone
else, and their skewed views of
life, you sometimes have to take
it upon yourself to be who you
want to be.
Your life is your own. Don’t
waste it trying to be hat others
expect you to be. Don’t sacrifice
your happiness to make
everybody happy. Don’t give up
on your dreams to build other
people’s dreams. Be who you
want to be.
Remember that it is important
to respect yourself first in any
relationship. If you aren’t getting
the respect that you deserve
then it may be time to take
yourself out of the predicament
that you are in, so that you can
receive the respect you deserve.
If a person doesn’t appreciate
you, a lot of times they don’t
deserve you.
