Outer Banks Jubilee to Host Local Band and Music Competition
By Derek Baker
In Kitty Hawk, among shops including AT&T, Daniel’s Homeport and Soundfeet Shoes, there is a
theater. Once housing one of the original R/C Theaters on the Outer Banks, locals will remember
the E.T. fi gure that occupied the lobby, and the two small theaters that brought entertainment to
locals for many years. The days of movies are over for this theater, but the entertainment is still
alive and well.
support Relay for Life to help end
cancer. There will also be a fun
Kid Glo-Run starting at 6 PM on
the church grounds. The 7 PM 5K
Glo-Run weaves through parts of
the Grandy community. Glo-strips
Now the theater-front reads “Outer Banks Jubilee,” and much to the credit of the Owners
Ronnie and Nancy Swaim, this little theater hosts variety shows that rival the entertainment of
Myrtle Beach and Branson. Departing from the standard show schedule, the “Jubilee” will host a
competition for local and regional bands on March 8.
Labeled “Battle of the Bands,” the competition welcomes bands from all across the east coast,
and will be excited to host talented musicians from all walks of life. Registration is $15.00, and
will end on March 6th. According to the Jubilee website, “winning band[s] will get the Jubilee
for one night for their show with all gate proceeds and promotion going to them, along with other
prizes to be announced!” Individuals and bands can register at the theater’s website, www.outerbanksjubilee.com,
or stop by the box office for more information.
The theater is not limiting itself to bands, though. On March 22, they will host a talent competition,
aptly named “1st Annual Outer Banks Jubilee Talent Show. Registration for the show will
end on March 20, and the fee to enter will be $10.00. All talents are welcomed to complete.
The Outer Banks Jubilee houses a complete concession stand and serves wine and beer. The
Theater seats 266, so patrons are encouraged to get their tickets in advance. In addition to theater
services, the building is also a full-service music store. For more information on upcoming shows,
the shows mentioned above, or inquiries into the music store, call the theater at (252) 261-7464.
Historic Whalehead and Mr. Knight’s Wild Knight
Currituck County is revered for a long tradition of waterfowl hunting. One of the more colorful stories about Currituck’s
hunting heritage revolves around a truly iconic structure on the Outer Banks, Whalehead in Historic Corolla. Whalehead did
not start out as a club; in fact it was not even called Whalehead. As legend has it, in 1922 a wealthy northern industrialist
named Edward Collings Knight, Jr. married his second wife Marie Louis LeBel Bonat. It is believed that Mr. Knight
brought his new bride to Corolla where they honeymooned. The new Mrs. Knight was an avid outdoors woman and
apparently loved the wild natural landscape as much as her husband. At the time the northern Outer Banks were populated
largely by gentlemen’s hunt clubs and small fishing villages. The gentlemen’s hunt clubs did not allow women to be
members, so apparently Mr. Knight purchased the Lighthouse Hunt Club and started building his new wife a hunting retreat
of her own. The original track of land encompassed four and a half miles from ocean to sound. Upon this massive plot the
Knights constructed their winter residence which is now often called the “Crown Jewel” of the Outer Banks.
The Knights named their new home Corolla Island.
The structure took three years to build and is an Art Nouveau masterpiece. The curving lines and natural elements carried
out in the woodwork and architectural details are rare in the U.S. Equally rare are the hand signed and numbered Louis
Comfort Tiffany light fixtures throughout the home. The five-story, 21,000 square foot structure was fitted out with every
state of the art amenity of the 1920s. The house had electricity, hot and cold running water, numerous bathrooms, an elevator,
wine cellar, refrigerators and even dish washers. Sadly the Knights only used the home through 1934 and both died in 1936.
The second owner Mr. Ray Adams renamed the house the Whalehead Club and used it primarily as a hunting lodge. During
WWII it housed the mounted Coast Guard who protected the northern shores. After Mr. Adams’ death in 1957 the house was
owned by numerous groups, it was used by a school and even rented out for various uses. By the 1980s the house was in
terrible disrepair and in the early 1990s was sold on the Courthouse steps. Thankfully Currituck County bought the property,
restoration efforts began in the latter1990s and now Whalehead is fully restored and open to the public.
To commemorate the Knights’ love of hunting and entertaining, Whalehead in Historic Corolla will host the second annual
Mr. Knight’s Wild Night. Mr. Knight’s Wild Night is part of the Outer Banks Restaurant Association’s 2014 Taste of the
Beach. It is scheduled to be held under the stars on the north lawn on Saturday, March 15.
of dinner, dancing and wine tasting. Chef Wes Stepp of Red Sky Cafe in Duck, NC will prepare a three course wild game
dinner featuring meat and fish native to the Outer Banks. Selections such as venison, quail, duck, boar will be served
with seafood favorites, oysters, rock fish, shrimp and scallops rounding out the menu. The meal will be accompanied
by a selection of NC wines from the Whalehead Gallery. The dress code is strictly Corolla hunter casual; Eddie Bauer
inspired outdoor wear is encouraged. For those attending Mr. Knight’s Wild Night who wish to spend the night in Corolla,
discounted rooms are available at the Inn at Corolla Light. Details about events, tours and tickets may be found online at
www.visitwhalehead.com.

ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY
AN INTRODUCTION
(Part 2 Continued from Feb 2014)
Doctrinally, theologically, and liturgically, Orthodoxy is united. While the various national churches have
characteristic musical traditions, and praxis may vary in minor ways among jurisdictions, there are no
doctrinal and no meaningful liturgical differences whatever among them. As an Orthodox Christian, I
can attend and understand the services, and receive the sacraments, and trust the fidelity of the
Teaching professed at any canonical Orthodox church in the world.
Orthodoxy is characterized particularly by its experience of suffering. As early as the fourth century, St.
Gregory Nazianzen spoke of “suffering Orthodoxy.” Consider the Roman persecutions, and then the
horrors inflicted on North Africa and the Middle East (Christian lands from the fourth century to the
seventh) at the spread of Mohammedanism by the sword; consider the horrors and persecution of the
Greeks and Slavs at the hands of the Ottomans, and the massacre at Smyrna; the horrors of Russia in
the centuries of the Tatar yoke, and then the vicious suppression of the Church by the Nazis and their
allies in the Balkans, and the oppression and gulags of Russia and Eastern Europe under
Communism. More Orthodox have been martyred than any other Christian group, and this history of
oppression and grief has done much to keep pure the Orthodox understanding of the truth of the
human condition. And as many western Christian churches fall increasingly under the narcotic
influence of the mind of this aberrant and reprobate time, one senses them diverging ever further from
the ancient and Orthodox understanding of the faith.
It is important, I think, to say a word about what Orthodoxy is not. It is not Protestantism, Roman
Catholicism, a philosophy, a code of rules, or Eastern mysticism—though any of these may share
something with her.
Most important for us, I believe, is the Orthodox Church’s firm understanding that she is a hospital: in
the words of Fr. David Moser:
… what is [Orthodoxy]? First, Orthodoxy
is a course of therapy or treatment for our spiritual illness. We are
all infected with the disease of sin, which results in death (that is,
alienation from God); and God, in His infinite mercy and love, has given
us a treatment for that illness. He gives us the medicine of His grace,
which counteracts the corruption of sin. He then also gives us a course
of rehabilitation, by which we overcome the effects of sin in us … and
which restores us to communion with God. Thus we have the rhythm of our
spiritual life: the feasts and fasts, the services of the Church, the
prayer rules, the daily remembrances of God’s mercy and provision for
us. The more fully we participate in this “course of treatment,” the more
frequently we avail ourselves of the medicine of grace in the
sacraments, the more effective it is for our cure.
“Devotion to the truth is the hallmark
of morality; there is no greater,
nobler, more heroic form of devotion
than the act of a man who assumes
the responsibility of thinking.”
― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged
BY KATIE BEDARD-GOYTOWSKI
Women’s mastermind, networking and referral group, the Outer Banks Entrepreneurs, has taken the region
by storm in the last two years, creating a unique opportunity for female small business owners, entrepreneurs,
service providers and direct sales vendors to work together to grow their businesses.
Founded by Kim Twiddy in 2012, the group has grown to three chapters - Outer Banks Entrepreneurs (the
main chapter, Currituck and Dare county area), Outer Banks - Tidewater (Chesapeake/Virginia Beach area)
and Outer Banks Entrepreneurs - of the Albemarle (Elizabeth City area).
The Outer Banks Entrepreneurs - of the Albemarle will be hosting its first-ever OBE Spring Expo on March
29, and while they have an extensive list of vendors and small business owners already signed up to participate,
there is still room for more.
Current confirmed booths include local businesses, crafters and direct sales like Charming Lockets, Send-
OutCards, Jamberry Nails, OBX Vintage Gifts, Damsel in Defense and Monkey Business, a create-yourown
stuffed animal shop, just to name a few, Anderson said.
But there are still spots available, she added - the space will hold 73 vendors, and local artists, crafters,
direct sales vendors, services providers, businesses and nonprofit organizations are welcome.
“This show is a great way to connect with the area and the community,” Anderson said.
The booth fee of $100 includes “one 8-foot by 2-foot table, two chairs, a tablecloth and wastebasket,”
Anderson said. “Each booth is tastefully separated by pipe and drapes to create a beautiful and professional
look.”
Access to electricity at the site is an additional $10, and all vendors are asked to provide an item of for the
raffle giveaways that will occur throughout the day.
Anderson, along with the expo team, has extensive experience in planning such events. They have already
started implementing heavy advertising for the show, including radio announcements, advertisements in
print publications, printed flyers and marketing via social media sites like Facebook.
For businesses, the exposure will be unprecedented - visitors to the event are promised a fun experience and
great deals, as well as live music and great giveaways from popular businesses.
“We organize these events to help serve the community,” Anderson said. In addition to being a great day of
shopping, proceeds will benefit two organizations, she said - the United States Equine Rescue League, Inc.
and the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina. The SPCA will even have pets available for adoption at the
event, she added.
Edenton, NC – The month of April brings with it lovely spring weather and some of the most beautiful blooms throughout the town
and county for all to enjoy. The Pilgrimage of Historic Homes has taken place on odd years since 1946 and with it being such a
wonderful event, it finally occurred to the Cupola House Association to showcase their beloved gardens on the even numbered
years with the first Easels in the Gardens event taking place in April of 2012.
Artists, Music and Gardens in the spring are the ingredients for making this weekend one not to be missed on April 25 – 26, 2014
from 1 – 5 pm. The combination of beautiful gardens, a wide array of wonderful artists demonstrating their beloved Plein Air work
and strolling violinists creates an ambience beyond compare. There will also be 3 – 4 workshops each afternoon related to gardening
whether planting, pruning or clipping to floral design and outdoor entertaining. As you walk the walk from garden to garden,
make sure to see what is taking place on the porches as an added delight.
Don’t miss the Family-Friendly Street Dance on South Broad on Friday, April 25th from 7 – 10 pm. Come Boogie to The Embers,
widely considered a musical MARVEL, this band is responsible for laying the groundwork for Beach Music in the Carolinas, Virginia,
the gulf coast region of North America and every beach in between.
A special Saturday evening gathering in the Cupola House Gardens from 5 – 7 pm with complimentary food and beverage will be
a great way to view and purchase the art that has been created over the weekend. So whether you are heading off to a dinner or a
wedding party, plan on spending from 5 – 7 pm to look at the beautiful art – a wonderful way to end a perfect spring weekend in
Edenton.
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
By Rosie Hawthorne
St. Patrick’s Day is coming up and I’m celebrating
with a traditional meal of corned beef brisket and
colcannon, which is a potato and cabbage dish. I’ll
be making a special spicy rub for the meat and a
sweet/hot glaze to finish it off.
Corned Beef Brisket
I usually get a 6-7 pound piece of meat, since there
will be shrinkage. A brisket comes in a flat cut and
a point cut and I prefer the flat cut. Rinse the meat
under cold water to wash off any curing salts. Pat
dry with paper towels.
Ingredients for the rub:
4 TB brown sugar
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp ground cloves
2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
½ tsp cayenne pepper
Mix all ingredients together.
Sprinkle the spice mixture/rub over the meat and
massage it in.
Heat oven to 350°.
I use a clay pot for my briskets, but you could use
a Dutch oven or any baking dish that you can cover
and get a tight seal.
Place spice-rubbed brisket into your baking dish
and pour 2 cups cold water down the side of the
pan, being careful not to wash off any of the rub.
Cover tightly and bake for 1 hour.
After one hour, remove from oven, and pour out
braising liquid. Pour another 2 cups of cold water
down the side of the pan. (If you’re using a glass
baking dish, let it cool a bit before you pour the
cold water in it.) Cover and bake another hour.
After the second hour, remove from oven, pour out
liquid, and add two more cups of water down the
side of the pan. Return to oven for the final (third)
hour of baking.
After the third hour, remove from oven, pour off
liquid, and increase oven temperature to 450°.
Prepare the glaze:
½ cup brown sugar, packed
4 TB soy sauce
2 TB Dijon mustard
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp ground ginger
Mix all ingredients and brush the sweet-hot glaze
over the corned beef. Return to 450° oven and
bake for 15 more minutes.
Let meat rest 10 minutes before slicing.
Colcannon
½ small cabbage, shredded
2 medium potatoes, diced
½ large onion, chopped
2 TB unsalted butter, melted
½ cup heavy cream
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
6 pieces bacon, fried and crumbled
Fresh parsley
Sliced scallions
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste.
Shred cabbage. Drop into boiling
salted water. Reduce to simmer.
Cover and cook until tender. About
10 minutes. Drain cabbage, cover,
and keep warm. Reserve the cooking
liquid for the potatoes.
Dice the potatoes and cook until
tender.
Combine the chopped onions with
the heavy cream. Bring to a boil.
Turn off heat and let steep for 15
minutes.
When potatoes are tender, drain,
then mash. Add the cream and onion
mixture to the potatoes, mashing,
and then stir in the cabbage.
Season to taste.
When plating the colcannon, make
a small well in the center and pour
in some melted butter. Add the
bacon crumbles and sprinkle scallions
and parsley over top. If you
notice in my picture, I added a few
shamrock leaves. They’re edible
and have a delicate citrus flavor.
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! I’ll
guarantee you, if you make this, all
eyes will be smiling, not just the
Irish.
Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long
NTCAPL/Apostolic Oneness is A Ministry that listens, engages and support efforts
to improve the quality of life for families and their communities of local
and surrounding counties through educational and training programs, economic
development, social outreach and housing equality that empowers individuals to
become self sufficient, self reliant and economically independent.
We believe that the Church is called to duty and service, maintaining the standard
set through biblical principle and applied Faith, manifested in our lives daily.
When we continue to persistently work at life, we find that we have a greater
chance at acquiring what we desire. The more that we apply ourselves in becoming
the best at what we do, the more that we will find success in everything that
we do, perseverance is the key to conquering any dream imaginable.
In this life there are many people who are given many different sets of resources,
but in life the reality is the ones who make it the farthest, are the ones who are
willing to stay motivated and ambitious through every single situation. What you
only you limiting your beliefs will stop you from getting where you need to be.
Cash advance, what to look for…
and what to run from.
Cash advances are, in most cases agreements that allow merchants to receive money for a percentage of future
receivables. It’s quite simple really.
Small businesses that cannot get funding or can not get it in a timely fashion from traditional financial institutions
will look to cash advance companies like Ally Merchant Funding, to supply them the capital they need.
Smart business people that need capital will of course be looking at the terms of the deal, like the factor rate,
time frame and the remit percentage. This is pretty ordinary and I would expect everyone to do this type of
due diligence.
Pretty simple so far, right?
What many merchants fail to look at though is the new credit card processing agreement that often goes with a
merchant cash advance. And that’s the got’cha. At AMF we’ve seen $1,000 dollar cancellation fees or tiered
credit card pricing structure that were 3 times the norm.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that the only numbers you need to look at are the terms of the cash advance.
Those are very important. There is no question about that. But there are a set of other numbers that must also
be studied before any contract is signed. And those are the credit card processing numbers. They are just as
important.
Work with reliable, professional companies that will NOT put your business into an exorbitant merchant service
contract when you sign up for their cash advance program. If they try to…run!
Run to Ally Merchant Funding today.
Dear Dr. Crime: My daughter, a
young teenager, and I have ongoing
fusses about her risk of harm when
she dates. She says I am foolish,
no one is hurt by going on a date
and I say she must be more critical
and careful. What is the risk for
girls? Angry Dad
Dear Angry: You have a right to
be concerned. A national survey
found that 10% of teenagers had
been a victim of physical violence
from a “date”. Psychological assaults
are higher. Other studies
show almost half of the kids in
local studies were victims. This
month is National Teen Dating
Dr. Ed Houser: A Man with a Dream
For 42 years he served in dentistry from his roots in the US Public Health Service; serving from the San Francisco US Public Health Hospital to the US
Coast Guard in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and later completing a distinguished professional career in Ohio. While recovering from injuries incurred
during an accident he paused to reflect upon his life. Looking back at his career he realized that his most satisfying times were those serving the disadvantaged,
people in need of help. Thus began his seeking to find missions in which to use his gift of dentistry.
During this time of pondering he moved to Grandy in Currituck County to be near his daughter’s family, including cherished moments of time with his
grandsons. Initially as there were no established free dental clinics in which to volunteer, he traveled with Missions of Mercy throughout NE North
Carolina. However, he soon felt strongly the need to open a local free dental clinic. He prayed and talked to colleagues, church members, local organizations
and government for support to provide the dental health care. Eager promises of future support were shared, enough for him to make a leap of
faith and purchase a mobile unit to begin his ministry adjacent to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Grandy, North Carolina.
Next, with his family’s help, he financed the start up. During this process, he contacted his friends and acquaintances from his 40 plus years in dentistry
for donations of supplies and equipment. He also discovered the importance of applying for grants and gratefully several critical grants and other donations
arrived just in time. Initial equipment and dentistry necessities flowed in and “Dr. Ed” as called by his clients, was able to open his doors and begin
to serve people in desperate need of dental care.
As word spread throughout NE North Carolina including the Hampton Roads, Virginia area, the list of persons in need of care grew exponentially. Working
two days a week, in the two years his door has been opened, Dr. Ed has served over 1,200 patients and performed thousands of dental procedures for
people who could not afford dental care. Patients have come from over 9 different counties in eastern North Carolina and from Virginia. Some adults received
their first ever dental care. In the two plus years the clinic has been operational the donated dollar value of his care has exceeded $350,000. Now
his pay is tearful hugs and handshakes. Dr. Ed states that he has never been happier, “My life is rich and I am the one who is blessed.”
However, as the need for dental care help has grown, it has become obvious that a larger facility is desperately needed. Currently his two dental chairs
are occupied in the small 10 X 30 foot trailer with no privacy for consultations while the small cramped waiting reception area only seats 2 persons at a
time. The AC and heat may or may not work on a given day and there are no restrooms.
While driving in the community looking at abandoned stores in a local shopping center, a dream took hold to construct a solid dental clinic capable of
serving more people per day with dignity inside rooms with more privacy. He realizes this would also open an opportunity for other dentists and dental
technicians to volunteer their time. For with the overwhelming numbers of people in need, he currently cannot adequately serve them in a timely way.
Perhaps a new clinic could also serve as an avenue for training new dentist from one of the local university dental schools. He believes emphatically that
those whom volunteer to serve will discover through their efforts of mercy, a satisfaction beyond their daily dental routines. A service of giving back
with gratitude for all they have been blessed to receive in life.
If you would like to contact Dr. Ed Houser, DDS, you may call the Currituck Free Dental Clinic at 252-599-7776 or email FreeDentalClinic@aol.com.
He may also be reached at PO Box 770, Grandy, NC 27939.
Respectfully submitted by a fan of Dr. Ed,
