The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to Woodstock.
Welcome to the players, Officials and
Supporters of East Grinstead Town and also
this afternoons match officials and representatives
from our main sponsors, ArrivaClick and
Drakes Plumbing. Todays match is sponsored
by the Carpet Centre so welcome and thanks
to them also.
After postponements at South Park and here
versus Ramsgate and Walton Casuals, its
great to be back!
Obviously, the big news is that Nick Davis, our
manager for the past three seasons, has, along
with Tony Cornwell, resigned. Nick and Tony
worked really hard during that time and the
committee are very grateful for all they have
done. In particular, having to build a complete
new team this season after losing most of the
players from the previous season. Unfortunately
Nick and Tony felt that they could not
live within our budget, a budget that has been
set to avoid us being in the red at the end of
the season therefore safeguarding our future.
Anyway, we move on and I would like to welcome
Aslan Odev as our interim manager. Obviously,
football is a results business and Aslan
knows that, but we were all impressed with
Aslan’s vision for the club and sincerely wish
him success. I know that you will welcome him
and give him your full support.
Literally, within minutes of Nick’s resignation
being announced, we had our first application
(despite us never advertising the post.) By the
next day we had had over twenty applications.
As a committee though, we felt that with only a
couple of months of the season to go, we wanted
minimum disruption, so we all felt that giving
Aslan the opportunity was the right thing to do
Appointing Aslan continues our tradition of giving
a chance for someone to manage at this
level for the first time. You will remember many
of them, Steve Lovell, now of course Gillingham
Manager (Steve was actually our manager
3 times!.) Richard Brady, now chairman of
Leatherhead), Gary Abbott, Mark Beeney,
(Now a youth coach at Chelsea) , Matt Wyatt,
Nick Davis himself and others. OK some were
more successful than others but generally we
have never regretted it.
Just an explanation now why budgets must be
tightly controlled . We have to find money for
the dressing room renovation that has to be
completed by March 2019 because of FA rules.
—they have to be a minimum of 18 square metres.
We are very grateful to have been awarded
grants from the KCC and Swale Council to
help with this but we still have to find a significant
sum ourselves.
Also we want to improve facilities for our wonderful
fans and that money has to come from
somewhere!
Next match for us is next Saturday when we
are away to Corinthian-Casuals, directions to
the ground are in this programme.
Hello Everyone.
Phew, what a couple of weeks! Manager resigns, New Manager appointed, Kane Rowland
signing a contract, Miles Cornwell leaving!
Its great that the majority of players have stayed and I like
to think that this is because of respect for Aslan and the
club in general, and especially respect for the supporters.
I hope that you all like the new web site. I had to start
from scratch with it as there have been problems in gaining
complete access to the old one. The address had
changed slightly but is now back at
www.sittingbournefc.co.uk, although
www.sittingbourne.uk and www.sittingbournefc.com all
work! The reason for the change is that after 3 years of
the “new” site and free hosting courtesy of Thermal Printer
Services Ltd the web master at TPS has parted ways
with the company, and I didn't have 100% control over the
site so I had to keep on asking him to add and delete
some content himself. This was not ideal as it introduced
a delay in updates. Also TPS wants to stop using the
server that was hosting the site so I made the decision to
completely revamp the site so that I have 100% control
and can put other innovations on it such as streaming. I
know its not as swish or modern looking as the old site
but I believe it does include a lot more information and is
easy to use. One downside is that the match reports from
the last 3 years are lost on the site, however they are not
completely lost as I have copies, but it will take some time
to put all of the links back. The links to the matchday programmes should all still work though!
The postponements of home games causes a lot of time wasted and expense with wasted
printing, so for some of the midweek rearranged games in April I will, where possible, be producing
joint Saturday / Tuesday programmes. Finally I am including in this programme an excellent
explanation of the promotions and relegations for this season at steps 3 to 5 (we are
step 4) and how non league at those levels will look next season.
East Grinstead Town —A Brief History
East Grinstead Town Football Club was formed on May 8, 1890 although it was another ten
years before they played their first competitive matches as founder members of the Mid Sussex
Football League. In those early days the club played in blue and white with the town's coat of
arms on the breast pocket. It was some years before they adopted their current colours of amber
and black and were nicknamed 'The Wasps,' both of which survive to this day.
They won the Mid Sussex League in 1902 and their first major honour followed seven years later
when they shared the Sussex Junior Cup with Arundel. In 1909 they were awarded senior status
which they have held ever since apart from two seasons when they were relegated to the intermediate
third division of the Sussex County League in 1989.
In 1912 Grinstead reached the Sussex Senior Cup final for the only time in their history but lost 4-
1 to St Leonards Amateurs in a ferocious snowstorm.
The Wasps were original members of the Sussex County League when it was founded in 1920,
but they struggled to make any impact and after finishing bottom in 1927 and replaced by Horsham,
they were not re-elected.
Rather than returning to the Mid Sussex League, they had four successful seasons in the Brighton
League before stepping up to the Southern Amateur League. A fresh challenge reinvigorated
the club and they won the Division Three title in 1932 with 15 victories out of 18. Three years later
they played on the Test match cricket ground at Trent Bridge in Nottingham when they defeated
Nottinghamshire Amateurs 6-0 in the old FA Amateur Cup.
Determined to regain their place in the Sussex County League, they were re-elected back in
1937 after winning the Mid Sussex League again and finished fifth in their first season.
In those halcyon days either side of the Second World War, four-figure crowds were the norm at
their old ground in West Street, East Grinstead, which they shared with the town's cricketers. The
club's record attendance is 2,006 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Lancing in November, 1947.
Success eluded Grinstead until 1952 when they won the Baldwin Cup, the forerunner of the Sussex
County League Cup. That team is reckoned by many to be the finest the club has ever produced.
It was certainly the most entertaining - 42 games that season in league and cup produced
222 goals!
Grinstead were third in 1955, but their fortunes began to decline along with crowd numbers after
that. They left West Street in 1959 but it wasn't until 1967 that they finally moved to their current
home at East Court after a protracted battle to get the ground, which was prone to waterlogging,
fit for football. In the meantime they had a spell at King Georges Field in the town centre.
The club again finished third in 1973 but that was as good as it got for another 30 years although
Grinstead did reach their first cup final since 1952 when they lost 4-1 to Haywards Heath in the
RUR Cup in 1974 despite taking the lead. During the 1980s the club regularly hosted Crystal Palace
and Brighton in charity fixtures watched by crowds of over 2,000 spectators.
Wasps found themselves in Division Two for the first time in 1979 and even had two seasons in
Division Three before regaining senior status. They were promoted back to Division One in 1993,
but lasted just two years.
Bob Smith led Wasps back to Division One in 2003 and they also won their first trophy for 52
years, beating Three Bridges 4-0 in the final of the RUR Cup.
Unfortunately, the club were relegated back to Division Two on the final day of the 2004-05 season
and in October 2006 Smith, the longest-serving manager in the club's history, was replaced
by former player Steve Norris.
In his second season Wasps romped to the Second Division title by a massive 18 points, losing
just twice all season. Their winning run of 14 successive league games at the start of the season
meant they became the last senior non-league team in the country to drop points.
East Grinstead Town —A Brief History cont
Since then the club has established itself in the top flight, most recently under former Brighton
striker Simon Funnell and their progress on the field has been matched off it.
Floodlights were installed in 1997 and a new drainage system laid in 2003 that has transformed
the playing surface, which is now one of the best in Sussex.
In 2008 two new stands and a pitch perimeter barrier were erected and in 2014 with the GAC
Stadium already meeting the requirements of the Ryman Football League after installing additional
seating, the club began work on a new dressing room and hospitality complex, a new turnstile
block and entrance and a resurfaced car park. Part of the 2014 funding included a £50,000
grant from FA Cup sponsors Budweiser, £100,000 from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund,
£40,000 from Mid Sussex District Council and £35,000 from SITA Trust.
Funnell’s side finished the season in second place, their highest ever County League position,
and in May 2014, the club were accepted into the Ryman League for the first time in our history.
In October 2014, Simon left the club and was replaced by Tony Beckingham, who returned for a
second spell having previously been in charge between February 2010 – October 2011. Tony
managed to keep the club in the Ryman League for a second season despite finishing in 23 rd
place in the table, but left to join Hythe Town in September 2015. Matt Longhurst was appointed
new manager in October 2015 and after a difficult start he led the club to a 20 th place finish, their
highest in senior football.
Last season Grinstead improved still further to finish 18 th . Longhurst briefly left the club to become
No.2 at Hastings United but was re-appointed after two weeks away and has strengthened
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 20th January 2018
Bostik League South
VCD Athletic 3 Sittingbourne 1 Att 80
To be harsh, Sittingbourne made too many mistakes
on the day and VCD were able to rather
easily pick up their first points since before
Christmas.
The game featured what was probably the
Brickies' worst 10 minutes of the season during
which they conceded two goals and also had
Kane Phillip sent off, along with a home player.
Apart from that, and a ghastly error which gifted
the home side their first goal, Sittingbourne
controlled much of this match without ever
reaching anywhere near their best form.
All in all this was a disappointing follow-up to
two home wins that had seemed to put them
back on track and allowed them to return to the
top half of the Bostik South League.
With Chris Elliott and Lex Allan ruled out, Sittingbourne
recalled Laurence Ball to their defence
and also had Tom Loynes available again
as substitute, following his hernia operation.
In dismal, rainy conditions on a rather forlorn
and deserted-looking VCD ground, Sittingbourne
dominated the opening period without
being able to break down a determined
home defence. The closest they got in this period
was when a VCD defender headed narrowly
over his own bar.
VCD, beaten 3-2 at Sittingbourne earlier in the
season, hadn’t threatened at all but still took the
lead on 37 minutes. Keeper Harry Brooks
called for a back pass from Ball but waited for it
to roll across his body onto his favoured left foot
and, rather embarrassingly, that gave Mfula the
chance to get close enough to block the attempted
clearance so that it just went straight in
the goal.
Sittingbourne don’t have the greatest of records
in recent times of hitting back from behind but I
really thought they had enough about them to
turn it round against these particular opponents.
But their passing was occasionally sloppy, they
lost just one too many
50-50 challenges, they didn’t get as many second
balls as they should have, and the usually
immaculate John Coker had a funny little period
where he couldn’t get a thing right.
VCD still hadn’t done much in the game, though
they fought determinedly and with commitment,
but they went two-up on 56 minutes when defender
Baker got in a free header from a freekick
and steered it home.
Worse followed for Sittingbourne a few minutes
later as they managed to stop an attack on the
edge of their area only for El-Moyhalbel to hit a
speculative shot that took a horrible deflection
on its way past Brooks.
The game hadn’t restarted when Sittingbourne
sub Phillip, who had only been on the pitch a
few minutes, got involved in a squabble with the
home team’s Awotwi. It looked something and
nothing, possibly a yellow card at most, but on
the advice of his assistant, the referee sent
both players off.
Sittingbourne took the attack to VCD for the
rest of the game, but top scorer Kane Rowland
was well marshalled, Miles Cornwell blazed
over when he did get a chance, and the energetic
Sal Kisitu had his shot deflected wide.
They did pull one back after 80 minutes when a
corner was only half-cleared and Ben Davisson,
probably Sittingbourne’s best player on the day,
got his first goal for the club with an excellent
instinctive left-footed finish into the corner of the
goal.
But it was too little too late as Sittingbourne
slumped to a seventh successive away defeat.
Sittingbourne: Harry Brooks, Chris Webber,
Salvyn Kisitu, Dan Parkinson (Tom Loynes, 53
min), Laurence Ball, John Coker, Bola Dawodu
(David Smith, 76 min), Ben Davisson (Yellow
card), Kane Rowland, Miles Cornwell, Rhys
Bartlett (Kane Phillip, 54 min). Subs not used:
Tyrone Guthrie, Nick Davis.
Non League Structure Next Season
I am reproducing a succinct explanation that appeared in http://northkentnonleague.co.uk/ of the
changes at our level and step 3 next season.
*A new League will be added at Step 3, it will be run by the Southern League and will be based
around the Midlands.
*The four new Leagues will consist of 22 clubs each, previously it was 3 Leagues of 24 clubs.
There will now be 88 clubs at Step 3 instead of 72.
*This season only one team will be relegated from each of the three current Step 3 Leagues.
*Promotion is the same from Step 3 this season, 2 go up from each of the three Leagues and 3
come down from the two National Leagues. So it is a straight 6 for 6 team swap.
*More teams will come up from Step 4 to help fill the extra League. Champions, runners-up and
play-off winners from each of the 6 Step 4 Leagues.
*A third-placed Step 4 team with the highest points per game average across the six Leagues will
also gain automatic promotion. Their play-off place will go to the 7th place team in that League.
*Teams will be regionalised into the four new divisions at Step 3 once all the promotions and relegations
have been settled.
*A new League will be created at Step 4 pushing the number to 7. It will be run by the Isthmian
League and be based around the Midlands. Each League will contain 20 teams.
*This season only the team finishing bottom of the six Step 4 Leagues will be relegated.
*26 teams will be promoted from Step 5 rather than the usual 14 to help fill the New League. So
aswell as the champions it will be 12 second place teams with the highest Points Per Game average
across the 14 divisions.
So in short summary there will be an extra League at Steps 3 and 4 meaning better regionalisation,
less travel costs and all Leagues will contain a reduced number of teams.
One interesting point that is worth looking at at this stage of the season is where the best performing
third place team from Step 4 can also gain automatic promotion.
As of 07th February 2018 the highest average points per game standings from the teams in third
place only are….
BS: Carshalton Ath: 65pts from 32 games= 2.03
BN: Potters Bar; 59 pts from 30 games= 1.97
SE: Dunstable; 55 points from 28 games= 1.96
SW: Bristol MF; 49 points from 28 games= 1.75
NN: Hyde United; 55 pts from 25 games= 2.20
NS:Bedworth Utd; 53 points from 29 games= 1.83
Hyde United in the Northern Premier North with the current advantage so in this case they would
get promoted and their play-off position would go to 7th placed Trafford. It is worth noting that at
this stage there are teams in the play-off zones that may have a better PPG yet as they have
played less games and have less points but they are not in third place so are not in my table.
In step 5 only two second place teams will not get promoted due to having the worst Points Per
Game from all the 14 second place teams. Currently those two teams are…
Beckenham Town and Horsham YM
(Results taken from 02/02/18)
As with all Promotions and Relegations between Leagues the FA will have final say and will confirm
all movements at the end of the Season

Saturday 27th January 2018
Bostik League South
Sittingbourne 1 Horsham 3, Att 159
For the second successive week, Sittingbourne
played a team they’d beaten in September at a
time they were up in second place in Bostik
League South. And they’ve lost both 3-1.
It’s been quite a turn-around, this season, Sittingbourne
having outclassed Horsham in that
previous encounter as they sauntered to a 5-1
win down in Sussex.
But now they’re finding wins altogether harder
to come by, and this was another frustrating
afternoon as they pounded forwards in the wind
and rain only to come up short.
Interestingly, five of this Horsham team were
on the losing side that sunny day in Sussex, yet
exactly the same number remain from the Sittingbourne
team that won so comfortably then.
For this match they were without two players
injured in the previous week’s defeat at VCD,
captain John Coker and midfielder Dan Parkinson,
allowing the return of Lex Allan and Tom
Loynes (his first full game since a hernia operation
before Christmas).
Sittingbourne began confidently enough in horrible
conditions but it was Horsham who
grabbed a surprise lead after 11 minutes in
what was virtually their first attack. A soft goal,
too, as a left-wing cross was simply flicked past
advancing keeper Harry Brooks by Nwachukwu
with everyone else standing around watching.
Nice celebration, the striker bravely pulling off
an athletic cartwheel on the slippery grass.
Not especially known for his defending, Loynes
saved another attempt on goal with a tremendous
block while at the other end the Horsham
keeper made a good save as captain Miles
Cornwell got clean through on goal.
Sittingbourne hesitated fatally again in the 31st
minute when a hopeful punt forward fell behind
the defenders and in front of Brooks, and
House ran into the space to score with a welljudged
lob from outside the box.
It needed a quick reply, and that’s what Sittingbourne
got, pulling back a goal just three
minutes later. Cornwell provided the pass and
Loynes the finish, showing how much he’s
been missed with a classy well-placed shot that
went in off the far post.
Just a goal down, Sittingbourne were very
much in with a chance and the half finished
with Chris Webber lashing a shot narrowly
wide.
The previous week at VCD I didn’t think Sittingbourne’s
response to falling behind was
that impressive, but this time they kept battling
and chasing and trying to get forward.
No faulting the effort, though sometimes the
end product of moves wasn’t incisive enough,
and Horsham, to be fair, defended well and
have an excellent keeper in Pelling, with very
safe hands in very testing conditions.
By far the closest Sittingbourne got to an equaliser
was in the 81st minute when Pelling picked
up a back pass. No good him arguing about it,
the decision was clear and correct. But Horsham,
of course, lined up the whole team across
their goal and managed to keep out Kane Rowland’s
driven shot from just five yards. It probably
needed something lifted to head height as a
low shot was almost certain to connect with
one of 22 legs guarding the goal.
And just as Sittingbourne must have been concluding
that they just weren’t going to equalise
on the day, Horsham added an injury time third.
A poor attempted clearance conceded possession,
and sub Landais had space and time to
place his shot past Brooks.
A disappointing result for Sittingbourne, which
sees them slipping into the wrong half of the
table, but I for one thought they played with
plenty of commitment and energy and were unlucky
not to get something from the game.
