BALD EAGLES, BISCOTTI, & HOT
CHOCOLATE
Date: Sunday, February 25th Time: 2:30
pm – dusk Fee: $15. Meeting Location:
Cashman Park Boat Ramp at the end of
Sally Snyder Way off Merrimac Street in
Newburyport.
Each winter, Bald Eagles from northern
New England move south to the lower
Merrimack River which provides
perfect, winter habitat for these majestic
birds. These spectacular birds soar
high over the water and then stoop to
secure prey with their sharp talons. Join
Newburyport Birders for biscotti & hot
chocolate as we discuss the Merrimack
River’s protected islands and the field
marks of the Bald Eagle. We’ll begin our
search for our national symbol on foot;
then we’ll carpool to several sites along
the river. Dress in layers and wear warm,
waterproof boots.
FOCUS ON SEABIRDS
Cape Ann, which projects far out into
the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the best
locations along the New England coast
to see seabirds during the winter. Many
species of sea ducks, loons, grebes,
and gulls feed and seek shelter in the
cape’s many coves and inlets and in
the protected harbors. We expect to
see a good variety of ducks as well as
the Iceland gull, red-necked grebe,
and red-throated loon in Gloucester
Harbor and at Eastern Point. Alcids,
such as razorbill and black guillemot,
can often be seen along Atlantic Road
or flying past Andrews Point. Andrews
Point is also one of the best places to
see the spectacular harlequin duck, and
for the past several years a king eider
has been present. Northern gannets
are relatively common, especially after
storms, and can be observed plunge
diving for fish. The purple sandpiper,
our hardiest shorebird, feeds on the surfsplashed
rocks. Cape Ann is magnificent
in winter! We hope that you can join
us. Sun, Feb 25, 2018 9:00 am - 12:30
pm, Meet at the Fishermen’s Memorial
on Western Avenue, Gloucester. Fee:
members: $25/nonmembers: $30. For
MEET BACKYARD BIRDS
Drop in at Joppa Flats for an up-close
winter wildlife experience! On select
weekend and school vacation days, Joppa
Flats volunteer Deb La Roy presents
demonstrations on bird research and
banding. After capturing wild birds in
the Joppa backyard, Deb brings them
inside to measure, weigh, examine, and
then release them. The unique band that
Deb places carefully on each bird’s leg
connects other bird researchers with the
data she’s collected. You’ll learn about
your own backyard birds and why they’re
here while watching scientific research in
action. All ages welcome. Since bird safety
is dependent on weather conditions, this
program will not be held in inclement
weather. If in doubt, please call ahead
to confirm that the program is on for
the day. Sun, Feb 25, 2018 10:00 am -
1:30 pm, Meet at Joppa Flats Education
Center, One Plum Island Turnpike,
OUR BOY: NEWBURYPORT’S FIRST
WWI CASUALTY FINDS HIS WAY
HOME
Bethany Groff Dorau first encountered
Marine Corps Private Eben Bradbury in
2014, when a strange coincidence brought
them together. They were neighbors, he
had a wonderful shy smile, and they had
a similar sense of humor. She learned his
nickname, met his family, read his mail,
and discovered that they were distant
cousins. The catch to this love story?
Eben has been dead for a century, killed
on June 12, 1918, in the blood-soaked
wheat fields of Belleau Wood in France.
Sunday, February 25th from 2-3pm.
Newburyport Public Library, 94 State
St, Newburyport, (978) 465-4428 www.
newburyportpl.org/ Follow the journey
of Eben “Bunny” Bradbury from his
doorstep on Bromfield Street to the
battlefields of France, and how the love
and support of his hometown, a century
later, helped to bring the story of “our
boy” to life.
