WE’VE MADE
ONE BIG STEP.
WHAT’S YOURS?
Angela O’Neill
Editor
Recently media coverage on environmental matters has
stepped up. From the ban on microbeads in cosmetics to
the PM’s pledge to eradicate ‘avoidable plastic’ - for many
it’s been a lightbulb moment.
And we’re doing our bit: We’ve brought our printing
locally, to Pureprint on the Bellbrook Industrial Estate.
Turn to page 9 for information on the printer’s impressive
environmental credentials.
On page 38 Claire shares more about her mission to
reduce the use of unnecessary packaging. I’ve learned
a lot from her already and am changing my habits. We
have author Ellie Jackson on page 7. Ellie has written
two children’s books about the harm plastic does to the
world’s oceans. We have copies of her books to be won,
too.
editors notes
On page 30 is Bex Maini, whose blog follows her family’s
love affair with great food and all things local. And Sue
Edwards joins us on page 8 to look at how businesses can
think green.
With our favourite columnists writing about sport, family
life and wellbeing, plus contributions from the Town
Council, Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Rotary, Volunteer
Centre and Brighter Uckfield there’s plenty of familiarity
ONE SMALL SPARK IGNITES CHANGE
Change your mindset and change your habits to help save the planet
by Angela O’Neill
Ellie Jackson is a former Uckfield resident and author of books ‘Duffy’s Lucky
Escape’ and ‘Marli’s Tangled Tale’. Since they were published last year, 2000 copies
have been sold. The tales of Duffy the turtle and Marli the puffin are written to
educate children about the perils of plastics in our seas, and how, by making
changes to our habits now, we can make changes in the future. A generous donor
has arranged for five Uckfield primary schools to receive copies of the books and
help to raise awareness.
8
EASY CHANGES:
Having lived in Uckfield nearly 30 years, I
then moved first to Australia and now live
in Cornwall. I do regularly come back to
Uckfield as I still have family there.
My brother
Dom
Jackson,
who sadly
drowned in
a sea kayak
accident
last year,
was also
from
Uckfield
and he was
a huge part
of the books
both before he died and after. He edited
my first book for me and gave me huge
encouragement, and since he has died,
he very kindly left me some money in his
will which has now gone to pay for the
books to be illustrated and published.
The first book is also dedicated to him.
We both grew up and lived in Uckfield
from 1979 until 2008, and for me, my
background in Environmental Science
and becoming a Geography teacher was
very much influenced by my Geography
teacher, Mr Wild, at Uckfield Community
College - he is still there teaching
Geography now - 28 years later!! He
truly is one of the
most inspiring
teachers amongst
my peer group
and is even talked
about today
amongst us all!
Since publishing
the book four
months ago, I
have now sold
over 2000. They
are now being sold
internationally
and nationally and
are being used by schools, preschools
and charities around the world to share
the important message about the dangers
of ocean plastics.
The fantastic series ‘Blue Planet II’ has
raised the issue of plastic pollution in the
oceans into the public consciousness and
many, many people are desperate to do
something to help.
By having my book in schools and
preschools, we are making sure that the

next generation is growing up knowing
how to tackle this issue so that it becomes
normal behaviour for them to reduce,
reuse and recycle. The books are also
being translated into many different
languages and will be either low cost
or free for schools in countries such as
Indonesia, India and Kenya.
I have secured my first anonymous
donation for five sets of the two stories
to go into five schools in Uckfield so
I will be sending those out to my old
primary school St Phillips, Harlands,
Rocks Park, Manor Park and Holy Cross.
I also have teaching resources to back up
the message from the books and ideas
for how the teachers can now use the
enthusiasm for the books by the children
to make a difference.
So far I have seen schools use the books as
a springboard into working towards Eco-
School status, to doing litter picks, setting
up recycling, writing to local businesses
asking them to stop serving plastic straws,
writing to the government to ask them to
change their policy on single-use plastic.
The chance for a significant impact from
a simple storybook and the motivation of
the children, their families, the teachers
and the broader community is huge, and I
see excellent results!
You can find out more about the books
and buy your own by visiting www.
ideas to get you started: ‘Say no to
straws’, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’, ‘Stop
ocean plastic pollution’, ‘Say NO to
plastic’.
Please send your entries – with name,
age, address and parent’s email
to display and help spread the word.
YOUR BUSINESS MATTERS
How to help your business help the environment
by Sue Edwards
If you run a business, however large or small, you may not naturally think of ways
to help the environment. But there is a lot that you can do.
ELLIE IN HER OWN WORDS:
A search for online data led me to a
website called ‘Carbon Brief’, who
specialise in the understanding of climate
change. They predict that global CO2
emissions were likely to increase by 2% in
2017, after plateauing for three years.
So, there are lots of things those of us
who run businesses can do to help the
environment.
Don’t print anything if you don’t need
to. Keep documents on your computer,
rather than in a filing cabinet. Go
one step further and use an online
service like Dropbox or Google Drive
to file documents. This will keep your
computer’s memory space free to a
maximum and means you can access
documents on the go.
Reduce paper waste by emailing clients
instead of writing letters. Shred waste
paper and donate it to a charity for reuse,
such as the horse rescue.
THE PROBLEM WITH TRANSPORT
Not surprisingly, the change which has
the most impact is methods of transport.
Keep car journeys to a minimum. Take
a bus or train. Try to do more than
one errand in a trip. If you have five
car journeys for five different errands
(starting with a cold engine), you will use
twice as much fuel than if you did it all in
one trip. Regarding efficiency, from worst
to best, transport options are plane, lone
car journeys, train and bus. According to
the RAC Foundation, transport is the UK’s
second largest source of CO2.
And of course, some good habits for all
of us - recycle your mobile phone rather
than dumping it, and correctly recycle
your office or business waste.
So there we have it. Food for thought and
perhaps this will help to remind us to
consider the environment more in the
future.
based in Uckfield since 1989 offering a wide
range of printing and print-related services
and a social commitment to sustainable
printing.
Our magazine is printed on a massive
NEWS IN BRIEF
BUSINESS CHANGE
AHEAD
There is more space
available to let to
businesses in Uckfield,
following the closure of
a couple of businesses.
Carpetright, which
occupies units 6/7 on Bell
Lane has announced that
it will shortly be leaving
the town. Chris Lawson
of Lawson Commercial
says that the units have
new owners an that they
‘intend to refurbish the
units and will be seeking
a new occupier. These two
intercommunicating units
offer just over 8,000 sq ft
of handy retail space with
a good size customer car
park in the front’.
Meanwhile, on the High
Street, the unit formerly
known as ‘Cuckoo’ at
number 75 is once again
available. Says Chris ‘It
was perhaps unfortunate
that the gentleman
concerned appeared to be
a bit under capitalised and
didn’t get his marketing
strategy quite right. I still
believe that this would be
a good facility to have in
the town, but the premises
do offer good retail
accommodation and could
easily revert to a shop. The
premises comprise some
700 sq ft on the ground
floor with a useful 1st
floor of just under 400 sq
ft all available on a new
lease at £16,500 pa.’ For
PICTURE HOUSE
SYSTEMS AID HEARING
AND VISUALLY
IMPAIRED
The award-winning
cinema recently installed
a digital wireless system
to assist with hearingimpaired
customers
and audio description
for visually impaired
customers (where it is
available for a film),
through the use of a
headset. Most main
release films have an
audio description track
available, although not
all smaller release films
do. Most ‘Arts on Screen’
events, unfortunately, will
not have this functionality.
Rachel Tout from the
cinema said: “As this
is a digital system, and
we lend you a headset
to use to hear the audio
description track, we are
not limited to specific
screenings – you can come
along to pretty much any
screening. Just explain to
a member of staff at the
counter that you require
the audio description
track on a headset. If you
want to check in advance
whether a film has an
audio description track,
then please feel free to
email me in advance, and
I can check this for you.”
The system is very new, so
the cinema advises calling
ahead in advance to make
sure there is someone
on hand to introduce the
system to you.
WEALDEN RESIDENTS
A Wealden District
Council survey has
revealed that nine out of
ten Wealden residents
like living here, and three
quarters are satisfied
with the way the District
Councillor Nick Collinson,
Cabinet member for
Community Leadership,
said “I’m pleased to see
that we are doing very well
newsinbrief
[and] we have decided to
commission the survey
every two years to better
monitor how we can
continue to improve
customer satisfaction. The
survey – which involved a
statistically representative
sample of 1,000 Wealden
residents chosen at
random - also includes
locally specific questions
about Council services.”
When asked How satisfied
are you with your local
area as a place to live?
90% of people responded
positively. 67% of people
think Wealden District
Council acts on the
concerns of residents, and
81% of people feel safe
outside after dark (the
national average is 79%).
The survey showed that
85% of residents were
satisfied with their waste
and recycling collection,
up 6% compared to the
last poll in 2014.
HEALTHIER SNACKING
Families are being
encouraged to reduce
the amount of sugar
they consume. East
Sussex Public Health
is supporting the latest
Change4Life campaign,
helping families choose
healthier snacks. Half the
sugar children consume
comes from snacks and
sugary drinks.
To help families
reduce the amount
of sugar children are
consuming and choose
healthier snacks while
shopping, Change4Life
is encouraging people
to remember the simple
tip – Look for 100 calorie
snacks, two a day max.
In East Sussex, more than
a third of 10 to 11-yearolds
and more than a
quarter of four to fiveyear-olds
are overweight,
while 20 percent of fiveyear-olds
in the county
have tooth decay.
The Change4Life ‘Food
Scanner’ app can bring
labels to life and show
how much sugar, salt
and saturated fat is in
everyday snacks, foods
and drinks. The free app
can be downloaded from
iTunes store or Google
WHY CHARITY PARTNERSHIPS ARE SO IMPORTANT
LAURA MANTON, SOLICITOR AND DIRECTOR
Four years ago we decided to formalise our partnership with charities by naming one charity
each year that we would fundraise for. In 2017 we raised money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in
Eastbourne. With great support from the all the staff at Dawson Hart and the local community
we raised over £6,000 and had a fantastic time in doing so!
We have seen so many benefits
of charity partnerships here at
Dawson Hart. The opportunities
for team building have been
fantastic – with people pulling
together to put on an event,
teams having the opportunity to
get together outside of the work
environment, and a real sense of
achievement and pride across the
firm at what we have achieved.
Everyone has wanted to be
involved and everyone has done
their bit. Every year our staff go
the extra mile to help these local
charities.
We ask our staff to get involved in
choosing our charity means that
everyone feels connected to the
cause and is keen to support our
fundraising events throughout
the year.
Events varied throughout the
year from hunting Easter Eggs
with the Easter Bunny, enjoying
a night of comedy hosted by
Oi Oi Comedy to dancing the
night away at the Barn Dance!
Colleagues took part in the St
Wilfrid’s Starlight Stroll and we
also held Dress Down Days in the
office to raise extra money for the
charity pot!
We were also thrilled to be
nominated for the Uckfield FM
Give Back to the Community
Award in November. It was
fantastic to be recognised for
charity fundraising work and
we had a wonderful time at
the Awards Evening hosted by
Uckfield FM.
Our Christmas Drinks Event in
December ended a successful
year of fundraising and guests
joined us to enjoy wine tasting,
nibbles and an impressive
Christmas cake!
We also announced that our
Charity of the Year for 2018 is The
Children’s Respite Trust. Please
keep an eye on our website for
details of upcoming events!
NEW MEMBER BOOST
Brighter Uckfield welcomes new volunteers
to tackle the town’s tricky spots
by Dorothy Sparks
In the month up to 14 January, the work of Brighter Uckfield volunteers has of
course been affected by the Christmas and New Year holidays. But we do not let
the grass grow under our feet. A hardcore of volunteers were out picking up litter
throughout.
LIME TREE AVENUE
At the start of the new year, apart from
litter-picking duties, our volunteers
joined up with the Lime Aid voluntary
group to trim the ‘suckers’ from the base
of each tree in Lime Tree Avenue, that’s
100 trees! We then swept the pathway
along the length of the Avenue and
tackled some overgrowing bramble
bushes at the southern end.
FENCE POSTS
We have had several new members join
us in our work, and we are usually able
to cover a wide variety of tasks every
weekend. Recently we reinstalled fence
posts around the scrap of land at the
southern end of the Applegreen garage.
NEW PROJECTS
There are some exciting projects to come
in the next few months when we will be
working with scout groups, volunteers
from UCTC, and volunteers from local
business.
We are most grateful for the continued
support of Uckfield residents and,
through this article. Let us know of any
messy spots or if you would like to help.
OVER £7000 RAISED
Uckfield Lions celebrate a
successful December
by Ellie Thackway
After a successful 2017, Uckfield Lions finished off the year with Santa’s Sleigh
visiting houses around Uckfield, our annual Waitrose raffle and a party for the
elderly in the community.
In December, Uckfield Lions once again
had a hectic month. We started the month
bringing Santa to the Uckfield Late Night
Shopping, and then with our annual party
for the elderly in the community. Groups
from around the community enjoyed
lunch, games, music and a visit from
Santa.
Throughout December, Santa visited
homes across Uckfield in his sleigh. He
gave presents and spoke to children, while
Lions collected your generous donations.
We raised over £4600, which will be
donated to local charities and good causes.
Once again Waitrose Uckfield sponsored
the Lions Christmas raffle & allowed us
to sell raffle tickets in the store for one
week leading up to Christmas. Our chosen
charity this year was the Rockinghorse
Charity & the total raised was £2575.
Waitrose & Uckfield Lions provided the
prizes. The winners were:- 1st prize - £200
Waitrose vouchers - Annette, Chailey
2nd prize - £100 Waitrose vouchers - Mrs
Ovens, Buxted 3rd prize - £50 Waitrose
vouchers - Mr Fenn, Buxted.
Uckfield Lions would like to thank the
people of Uckfield and the surrounding
villages for their support, throughout 2017
and particularly in December. Without
you, our fundraising efforts could not be
the success they are.
RIBBONS RAISE £4,000
Rotary Club’s Christmas collection provides
welcome boost to charity fund
communitymatters
by Jeff Holman
Since 1951, Uckfield’s Rotary Club has had a Christmas tree at the centre
of Uckfield. This year the collection boxes at the tree and the purchase of
commemorative ribbons raised over £4,000 – huge thanks goes to the people of
Uckfield for their generosity.
Our Charity Fund was boosted by £582.80
from the sale of the ribbons and £3,468.46
from our collecting boxes. We thank all
who donated, as well as Fuller and Scott
and Allsorts, who sold ribbons for us,
and CJ Thorne, who have donated the
tree every year since 1951, and were very
helpful this year erecting and taking
down the tree. We can’t do what we do
without this community support, and we
appreciate it.
We have already started spending the
Charity Fund: we held our annual
Seniors’ Party at Uckfield College last
month when some 100 ladies and
gentlemen enjoyed an afternoon of tea,
cakes and entertainment.
Once again we are offering £1,000 to a
local person aged between 16 and 25, in
our Making Dreams Come True award.
The aim is to help a local young adult
realise an ambition. What the money can
be used for is not defined, but we invite
young people to make a bid and convince
us that their dream is the one worth
supporting. More details can be found on
our website, along with the application
form and information sheet – read the
latter, fill in the former, and who knows
where it might end.
The next social event we have planned is
a Race Night on 24 March. Details will
shortly be available, and we look forward
to seeing you there.
IT HELP AT HAND
Stephen joins the team to offer i help!
by Sophie Whelpton
Stephen Evans is a new face at the Uckfield Volunteer Centre; offering help got
those wanting to get to grips and get the most out of their iPhone or iPad.
“Hello. My name is Stephen Evans, and I
am a volunteer at the Uckfield Volunteer
Centre. I am 16 years old and studying
IT level 3 extended diploma at West
Kent College in Tonbridge. The course
has units that will help me with IT in all
aspects, including networking, website
design, Excel and basic programming. I
have a good deal of knowledge with IT,
which includes phones and tablets. My
dad got me into IT at a very young age
because he builds and fixes computers
- I was fascinated by this and wanted to
follow in his footsteps.
Contact the Volunteer Centre
Phone 01825 760019, or email
uckfieldvolunteer@gmail.com
We asked Stephen to tell us about himself
and how he came to join the team at
the Uckfield Volunteer Centre. Stephen
wanted to volunteer somewhere close to
home and, as he lives in Crowborough,
our centre in Uckfield is ideal.
He firstly looked at the Do-It website and
found all the opportunities called for
someone over 18. He then discovered
that there was a need for IT help at the
Uckfield Volunteer Centre, so gave us
a call. We are delighted to welcome
Stephen with his knowledge of Apple
devices.
“I am offering help for anyone with
an Apple iPhone or iPad, so this is an
excellent opportunity for you to come
in if you have any questions about these
devices. You could ask anything you
like, no matter how simple it might be.
You may have got an iPad or iPhone
for Christmas and are sitting there not
knowing what to do with it.
“Some of the most common questions I
hear are ‘how can I send an email’, ‘how
do I add an email account’ and ‘how can I
add apps and use them’?”
Stephen is at the Volunteer Centre
on Wednesdays from 10 am until 1
pm. Contact them for a free of charge
appointment.
GET IN TOUCH AND GET ACTIVE
Active Uckfield wants to hear from your organisation
by Jeremy Hallett
On 22 February, Active Uckfield will be hosting a meeting with organisers from a
variety of different sport and activity groups from around the town to kick off a
coordinated approach to 2018.
We have already had 19 sports and
physical activity organisers in and around
Uckfield commit to meet us to see how
together we can better promote exercise
locally.
If you organise exercise type activities
and haven’t been contacted (or haven’t
replied yet), please get in touch as we
want as broad a range of people together
as possible on 22 February when we meet,
and we are sure that we will have missed
some people out as contact details can
quickly become out of date.
Recently it has been great to hear about
so many young people getting involved
with Grasshoppers football, Uckfield
Rugby Club and LeTennis.
Local triathlete Jamie Bedwell has said
about the accident he suffered in 2016
that “It’s made me live every day to the
maximum and I’m more determined than
ever to work hard and achieve my dream
of reaching the Olympics”.
So, while we might not achieve Jamie’s
fitness, little steps all help towards
achieving personal goals and those New
Year resolutions to take part in more
healthy activity, whatever your age or
physical condition, can be made.
If you can’t find the activity you want
locally, please get in touch with me on
07876 275031 or jeremyhallett59@gmail.
com, and I’ll see if there’s anyone that we
know of who you can join.
The ultimate way to reduce
and reuse - pass it on
SPREAD
by Angela O’Neill
Generosity of communities makes
the Kids Count Project work
The explosion in the availability of cheap clothing has meant more
and more garments are going to landfill or sold the ‘rag trade'
(literally). But what if the items you've got to get rid of are barely
used? What if you could find a home for them that meant they
were appreciated, and went somewhere they were needed? That's
where the Kids Count Project can come in.
When I was looking at a way of ‘getting rid' of our children's much
loved (but barely used) baby items, I was adamant that I didn't
want to sell ‘bundles' on eBay, or send to charity shops. I wanted
to pass on the kindness that had been shown to us by trying to
find someone who needed and would appreciate all of their (what
I thought were) lovely things. By chance - and thanks to Facebook
group ‘Uckfield Supermums' - I found the Kids Count Project.
They’re based in Hailsham, but their work reaches across Sussex -
as far as Bognor Regis.
STARTING SMALL
After contacting Mary Laxton - the founder of the project - I found
out lots more about it. It began life by chance in early 2017 after
being linked to Hailsham Foodbank, matching donated items to
families in need. It quickly became it's own project and is now
based at Mary's home - she has converted a bedroom and lined it
with shelving to store and sort donations. Mary runs the project
with the help of her daughter, Helen Deehan, who has a young
family of her own.
continued on next page
#lov
In the whole of
2017 45 bundles
were given out.
So far, in just
the first month
of 2018, 20
bundles have
already been
donated.
communitymatters
HOW IT WORKS
Families receive ‘bundles' - which are
bespoke to each situation - after Mary
receives a referral from food banks,
ESCC Children's Services, Healthcare
Professionals and related charities. Each
referral is unique, and the Kids Count
Project tries hard to make sure each
bundle has as much as is needed for the
given situation.
WHAT THEY NEED
Donations are mainly clothes and toys -
though often there are requests for larger
items such as stair gates, buggies and
baby bouncers. The Hailsham Lions and
Rotary Club also support the project by
providing supermarket vouchers meaning
that Mary can add nappies, wipes, bottles,
formula and weaning kits as required.
Usually, bundles are prepared for
children under the age of two, but they
will sometimes receive a request for items
for an older child.
SHOUT OUTS
Mary rallies the project's supporters
through the Kids Count Project's Facebook
page - putting out shout-outs for items
and welcoming new members. No details
are ever given of the recipient - but who
cares, as long as someone in need is being
helped?
28
HOW YOU CAN HELP
SUPPORT THE PROJECT
Join the Kids Count Project Facebook
Hailsham Facebook page. Donations
can be dropped off on Wednesdays from
8.30am-4.30pm.
toys should be washed before being
passed on. The project welcomes the
GET CONNECTED WITH THE
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
As I write, we are well into January, and we’ve reached that point when people
have stopped wishing each other a ‘Happy New Year!’ But a New Year often
provides a fresh impetus to do something different! The usual suspects are always
there; join a gym and attend regularly (Anytime Fitness 24/7 would be a good
option), lose weight (can personally recommend Uckfield’s Slimming World!) or
give-up drinking, smoking… fill in the blank!
For business owners, a New Year allows
an opportunity to reflect on business
plans and establish targets and goals for
the year ahead. One of those might be
to ensure that your business is visible
and noticed within the Uckfield business
community. Earlier in January I was
interviewed on Uckfield FM and spoke
about the opportunities to ‘network’
within our town.
One of our objectives as a Chamber of
Commerce is to bring Uckfield businesses
together on a regular basis – we have 70
local business people booked in for our
January meeting next week and have
bi-monthly meetings planned at various
venues around the town. While there
is both a business and social element
to these meetings, the savvy Chamber
member will ensure that they get to
meet those business connections that
32

UCKFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2018
can benefit their own business. While
networking probably best helps those
B2B type organisations (business to
business) there is still a place to b2c firms
too – remembering that every business
owner/manager attending a networking
event is a consumer also, not forgetting
their family, friends and other personal
connections.
One other event that I mentioned last
month is a unique ‘one-off’ event for
Uckfield. Together with our MP Nus
Ghani, the Chamber will bring local
businesses the opportunity to become
‘Disability Confident’. Please email me
(address below in the red box) if you
would like an invitation to attend this
important event on Friday 9 March 7.30-
9.15am. More details can be found on the
Chamber website.
We welcome half a dozen new members
to the Chamber this month: Moving Down
Limited (a personal moving service); Net
XP (B2B tradeshow / expo organisers);
Off The Wall Entertainment (children’s
entertainment for events); Quality
Solutions (internet security specialists);
Uckfield Yoga (classes in their new high
street premises), and W.E.Clark & Son
(newly opened jewellers in the high
street).
Finally, we are working on our Chamber
members’ directory for 2018 – we wanted
to include our new members – but this
will be a bit different to previously with
an improved design. It will be available
to pick up at various locations around the
town. Until, next time…
ROAST REVIEW
© Bex Maini
By Bex Maini
As part of my Local Roasts series
of reviews, I went along to
check out Sunday lunch at The
Crown Inn in Newick with Nik,
the twins and my in-laws. It had been
recommended by a friend and didn’t
disappoint! We arrived for our booking at
1:45 pm and were seated in a little snug
area by the main door. They explained
when we arrived that they could only fit
the six of us across the two tables in there
so we had four of us on one table and two
on another as they needed space to get
through to serve, so Priya and Ma had a
table to themselves.
We had a choice of three mains; turkey,
beef or nut roast, each served with
roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings
and vegetables. I chose the mustard
glazed beef and I’m so glad I did, it was
delicious! I received two thick slices of
tender beef, and the rest of the portion
size was generous too. I loved the range
of veg; we had cabbage, broccoli, purple
carrot, parsnip, swede & carrot mash,
charred baby gem lettuce and three roast
potatoes, all of which were perfectly
cooked as well as a lovely Yorkshire pud.
A lovely addition was when they came
out to ask if we’d also like any cauliflower
cheese (a favourite of mine), served hot
from the dish. This was also lovely; I
think there might have been lemon zest
in it as it had a very fresh citrus tang to it.
We all had plenty of gravy and the
horseradish sauce had a good kick to it.
Nik and the twins enjoyed their turkey
too, it was nice and moist and the kids’
portion (£7) was huge, we got them one
to share and they had plenty. The turkey
main was £13.50 and the beef was £14.50
so on the pricier end of the scale as roast
dinners go but worth it in my eyes, as the
quality was amazing.
We didn’t see much of the rest of the pub
as we were in our snug corner which was
nice enough but had little atmosphere,
just being us and a fan heater in front of
the unlit fire. From what I did notice of
the pub though, it had more of a modern
feel to it but with some traditional
discovered a bookcase filled with games
and toys after dinner which kept them
amused while we digested our meals. The
kids’ meal came with ice-cream included
so they were offered a scoop each, but we
declined as we didn’t want to give them
sugar right before their nap. (Us grownups
did get a cheeky sugar hit though as
our bill came in a cute little espresso cup
full of jelly beans.)
Overall, we had a lovely time, and we
all enjoyed our food. Nik’s parents both
thought it was the best roast they’d had
around here, we definitely recommend it
if you’re after something a bit special. The
staff were friendly, polite and efficient.
We plan to go back; I’d like to try some of
their other food too.
Bex will be back every month with something different
to share, be it her latest foodie find, craft project, home
inspiration or latest family adventure. Keep up with all of
Bex’s escapades at www.olivedragonfly.com and listen out
for her on Uckfield FM on the first Thursday every month.
Nik and I have become quite addicted to
these Virgin Marys (and the occasional
Bloody version). They’re easily adapted to
your own personal taste as well as being
simple to mix and actually pretty healthy, all
that vitamin C!
Serves 2
INGREDIENTS:
250ml tomato juice
100ml vodka (optional - leave out for a Virgin
Mary)
20ml Worcestershire sauce
Juice of 1 lemon (keep a slice to garnish - we
found this makes a difference as you smell it
as you drink)
1/4 tsp celery salt
2-3 dashes Tabasco
Ice & Sprig of rosemary - to garnish
METHOD:
Fill a tall glass with ice. Mix all the
ingredients in a jug and pour over the ice,
garnish with slice of lemon and rosemary.
Of course, you can adapt it to your own
tastes, we like it with a bit of a kick but not
too fiery. Enjoy!
BAD WEATHER
DOESN’T STOP US
by Zoe Holland
The words of Alfred Wainwright ‘There’s
no such thing as bad weather, only
unsuitable clothing,’ have run through my
thoughts many times over recent weeks.
As I’ve fought to get toddlers dressed
in multiple layers and tried to reason
with teenagers (for the third time that
week) as to why
they need to wear
more than just a
T-Shirt when it’s
sub-zero outside
these words have
reassured me
that the twenty minute performance it
takes our family to leave the house is all
worthwhile. It is. We live in a beautiful
part of the country, and even when it’s
cold, wet and grey, I find getting outside
as a family the perfect remedy for cabin
fever.
We loved exploring the new Highway Rat
trail at Bedgebury Pinetum. The new trail
has been opened in perfect timing to tie in
with the BBC Christmas adaptation of the
Julia Donaldson tale. The children loved
racing around the woodland following the
Highway Rat clues, discovering a number
of exciting new play areas in the process!
year. Best of all the cafe sells a good hot
chocolate to warm up with afterwards.
We did enjoy a bit of indoor fun last
month too! The kids thoroughly enjoyed
Party hosted by the ever-enthusiastic
Gemma. Daisy
through the craft
table while Logan
We started the year with good intentions
to do our bit to look after the environment
and help the planet. With this in mind,
we joined Zero Waste Maman, at her
beach clean in Seaford. The children
were hugely motivated to collect as much
were all reminded of the importance of
recycling and to be aware of wasteful
packaging.
This month we look forward to joining
Oast Farm in Buxted for their Wassailing
celebration! This will be our first
experience of Wassailing, but we are told
to expect Morris Dancers and torchlight
processions doing their best to scare
away the evil spirits from the orchard for
a good harvest!
we hope to visit the Legoland Hotel
for their Junior Build Week. Although
Legoland itself isn’t open you get to stay
in the hotel, meet some Lego characters
and swim in the pirate cove pool.
So yes, it may still be cold and
occasionally wet at this time of year - but
be sure to pull on your boots and get
your cosiest coat on because there’s still
a lot to discover out there - whatever the
weather!
FIVE
TIPS FOR
living with
LESS PLASTIC
By Claire Sumner
Single-use plastic or disposable plastics are everywhere from coffee cups to packaging
on nearly all items of food. It’s astounding to see how much damage they are doing to
the planet, but you can make changes or swaps that mean you are stopping being part
of the throwaway culture. All of the plastic you throw away ends up somewhere; it
doesn’t stay in a bin to go to landfill, it also ends up in the ocean.
40

Simple changes that
you make NOW can
literally save the
world
environmentmatters
1
2
3
Take your own shopping bags. You can
buy little foldaway bags everywhere, even
Waitrose, or a fabric tote, string woven
bag that will quickly fold up in your bag
or pocket for when you need it.
Carry a reusable water bottle; you need
never buy a plastic bottled drink again!
The stainless steel ones are best in my
opinion. Water, juice, whatever is your
cold drink of choice fill up at home. With
any luck in the future, there will be water
fountains available throughout Sussex to
refill for free!
Carry your own coffee cup. A staggering
2.5 billion single-use coffee cups are
thrown away in the U.K. each year, filling
up near to capacity landfill sites. Enjoy
your coffee from the comfort of your own
cup.
4
5
Stop using the top two single-use plastics;
straws and plastic cutlery. When you
enjoy your drink, don’t take the straw
that comes with it, refuse! If you have
children or grandchildren that love to
drink through straws, you can buy super
stainless steel ones to take with you
whenever you go out.
Stop using plastic produce bags. Take
your own reusable cotton bags, either
make them or buy them there is plenty
of choice for the consumer, or take the
produce like apples, pears, oranges,
peppers loose to the Supermarket
conveyor belt. They don’t need to be
bagged!
THE INVISIBE KILLER
AT THE SCHOOL GATES
by Dr Kirsty Smalbone
Do you ever think about the air that you breathe? No, well you are not alone. Although
we don’t have the thick ‘pea-souper’ smogs of the early 1900’s, caused by burning coal
that some people will remember, we still have the invisible killer on our streets.
Every year, air pollution from our
cars, buses and lorries kills over
50,000 people1. It also reduces our
life expectancy by around eight
months according to the World Health
Organisation and can cause heart attacks,
strokes, cancers and respiratory diseases.
It has recently been linked to the onset
of asthma and with causing dementia.
Those most at risk of the effects of air
pollution are the elderly, children and
those with pre-existing heart and lung
conditions.
Air pollution such as nitrogen dioxide,
an odourless, colourless gas, is rising in
Uckfield town centre but is still below
the National Air Quality Limits, can
also impact on our environment and
the ecology that makes this area so
special. So what can we do about it, well
little things can make a big difference,
choosing to make the small journeys on
foot or by bus will make a difference. If
you are dropping children at school, ask
yourself if you have to drive, can you
walk? Talk to the council about setting
up a walking bus, and if you do have
to drive, please turn off your engine,
don’t sit there idling as children are
vulnerable to air pollution. If you are
thinking of buying a new car, can you
afford a hybrid, if that’s not to your taste,
consider about swapping a gas guzzler
for a low emissions vehicle, especially if
you are a business. If you do have caring
responsibilities, or suffer from a heart
or lung condition, you may want to sign
up to airalert http://www.airalert.info/
Sussex/Default.aspx – which is a free
services, run by the Local Authorities in
East and West Sussex, plus Brighton and
Hove to predict and warn you of the air
quality in your area.
FALLING FOUL OF DOG MESS
BY CLLR.PAUL MEAKIN
There is a growing concern amongst residents and the great many responsible dog owners about
dog waste being left on our streets, particularly on our sports fields, public green spaces and the
nature reserves. It is not only very unpleasant and offensive but also can be a serious health risk,
especially to young children, and may eventually get into our water supply.
The council has recognised this
concern. The Environment and
Leisure Committee has agreed
to run a campaign throughout
2018 to re-educate the few
irresponsible dog owners who
Please bag
the poo!
Any
bin will
do
fail to pick up their dog’s mess
and dispose of it correctly.
I am a dog owner and walk in
many of the areas that are of
major concern which is why
I am keen to champion this
much needed proposal. It is
clearly not right that dog mess
has to be cleared away from our
sports pitches and recreational
areas before games and events
can begin.
The campaign will seek
to remind people of the
importance of bagging and
disposing of their dog’s mess
in the town’s many litter bins,
to explain why this is important
to so many people and to
influence the few irresponsible
dog owners to change their
anti-social habits.
One part of the campaign will
involve siting dog poo bag
dispensers to provide free bags
at the locations where we have
serious dog fouling.
There is more information
about this campaign on the
WHAT’S INSIDE
• Greening the Civic Centre
• Priorities for 2018/19
• Last month in your council
• 2019 calendar competition

44 UCKFIELDVOICE
GREENING THE CIVIC CENTRE
Over eight years ago your council decided to find ways to make their properties more
environmentally-friendly and also reduce their annual running costs. This would be good for the
environment and good for the council taxpayers. A great deal of work was carried out by councillors
and consultants resulting in the council agreeing to changes being made to the Civic Centre
including installing a new biomass boiler for space heating, a better water heating boiler for the
kitchen, photovoltaics (PV) solar panels on the roof, sensor controlled lighting and changes in the
electricity management systems.
BIOMASS BOILER
The Civic Centre also has a
biomass boiler installed to
provide heating and hot water
for the building. A biomass
boiler burns wood pellets to
produce the heating and lower
carbon emissions.
We spend around £10,000 in
heating costs per year (£7,000
of which is for the biomass
boiler system). However, we
receive income back from the
UK government’s Renewable
Heat Incentive (RHI). In
2016/2017, the money we
received almost covered these
costs; making a valuable
contribution to our utility bills.
SOLAR PANELS
The photovoltaics (PV) solar
panels on the roof of the
Civic Centre capture the sun’s
energy using photovoltaic
cells. The cells convert sunlight
into electricity and can still
generate some electricity on a
cloudy day.
The Civic Centre and Luxfords
Restaurant spends around
£10,000 a year in electricity
costs. However, we receive
income back from the UK
government’s ‘Feed-in Tariff’
scheme for the electricity
generated by our solar panels
and in 2016/2017 this was just
over £4,500. Therefore, this
investment almost halves our
annual electricity bill.
WATERLESS URINALS
The Civic Centre has also
installed waterless urinals in
the gentlemen’s facilities. This
significantly reduces the water
consumption of the building
and consequently saves
money. The urinals are also
easier to clean, won’t cause
flooding problems and better
to maintain.
The council continues to
review all areas of expenditure
to reduce its costs to make
it as efficiently funded and
environmentally friendly as
possible.
LAST MONTH IN
YOUR COUNCIL
Whilst setting the future priorities
of the council, members have
been considering a number of
new initiatives.
Environment and Leisure Committee
looked into the possibility of
introducing a shelter at Victoria
Pleasure Ground and the most
appropriate materials to use outside.
However the two most suitable
locations identified on the periphery of
the sports field posed risks to safety
(close proximity to the beacon and to
the roof and pavilion building). And, if
placed to the east of the car park, the
shelter would be too close to nearby
properties. Members were keen to
keep investigating and agreed in
principle, to provide a shelter subject
to a suitable location being found.
A report was returned to committee
on the pedestrian access between
Victoria Pleasure Ground car park and
the entrance to St Philips Catholic
Primary School. Members considered
the detailed information provided
and agreed to make this temporary
access, permanent for school pupils
and their parents. This decision was
based on the gate being locked when
school had finished; that the access
arrangements be formally reviewed
each year; the school keeping an eye
on parking behaviour and the Town
Council giving notice to rescind the
agreement if the terms were not met.
Successful start
for town’s clubs
2018 gets underway with things looking on the up
By David Eggleston
Fortunes have improved for both AFC Uckfield and Uckfield Rugby
Club since the New Year. Two local gymnasts are keeping their
fingers crossed as the English championships approach. And
accessible swimming is now on offer at the leisure centre.
RESURGENT AFC UCKFIELD TOWN
After a string of disappointing results,
the tide turned for AFC Uckfield Town
during December, with Anthony Storey’s
resurgent team, strengthened by the
signing of a number of talented young
players, recording an impressive three
wins and a draw in the month.
In easily their most outstanding
performance of the season, Uckfield
came from behind to win 2-1 at the
high-flying league leaders Haywards
Heath. There was also a rare victory over
Newhaven on Boxing Day.
Uckfield climbed up towards mid-table
in the Southern Combination Premier
Division on the back of their good
December. But, the chance of further
progress up the table was hampered by a
lack of fixtures in January due primarily
to the weather. Uckfield face a run of
away fixtures in February, prior to a home
clash with Crawley Down Gatwick on 3
March.
With further disruption possible in the
coming weeks, you can keep up-to-date
with AFC Uckfield Town fixture news via
their Twitter feed @afcuckfieldtown.
Meanwhile, looking ahead, the Club
will be renewing its first team playing
kits next season. Any local companies
who would be interested in having their
name proudly emblazoned on Uckfield’s
home or away shirts are asked to contact
committee member Graham Sullivan on
LOCAL GYMNASTS GEARING UP FOR
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Georgina Moors and Abigail Brooker, who
both train at the Uckfield Gymnastics
Club, have been preparing for the English
Championships, which take place on the
weekend of 10 February. Both gymnasts
are hoping to do well enough at these
Championships to be called up into the
England squad. Good luck to Georgina
and Abigail.
UCKFIELD RUGBY CLUB ON A ROLL
Uckfield Rugby Club have started off the
New Year in the same positive way as they
ended 2017. Victories over Barns Green
and Eastbourne made it a run of four
straight wins either side of Christmas,
which lifted Uckfield up to third place in
the table.
Whilst Uckfield are some way behind
the runaway leaders Hellingly, they can
look forward with confidence to the
second phase of the season, which sees
the division split, with the top four teams
playing each other.
If you or your local sports club would like to
appear in a future issue of Uckfield Matters,
or if you would be interested in having an
interview on Uckfield FM’s Saturday Sport
programme, then please contact David
16 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE TRADE

WHAT CROCHET TAUGHT MY SON
Simple pastimes bring generations together
pastimesmatter
by Tracey Anderson
Two years ago my mother decided to
teach my son (aged eight at the time) how
to crochet and recently it occurred to me
just how much more it taught him.
Intergenerational communication skills
- My mother is clueless about Minecraft,
Manga, and mobile phone technology,
so conversing with Lucas could be stilted
and awkward, but crocheting gives them
a task in common and makes talking
easier. By teaching him in small steps like
a game, she made it seem achievable.
That you don't always need to be 'plugged
in' - A ball of wool and a crochet pin are
the only tools required. He no longer asks
for 'computer time' or complains that he's
bored when we visit Grandma
That failure is ok - of course he dropped
stitches and tangled his wool, but
Grandma told him it was ok to stop, and
start again, and encouraged him not to
give up at the hurdles.
The sense of achievement - When he
presented me with his first little coaster
he was proud and thrilled. He loved that
I put it on my desk and that my coffee
cup sits on it while I write. Every time
he comes in, even two years later, he
mentions it. For the Christmas just gone
I received a lovely crocheted hat made by
him, with help from his Grandma. When
I wore it out on Christmas Day he nearly
burst with pride.
I don't know if he will continue to crochet
but even if stops he will retain the other
life skills his Grandmother has imparted,
and I may well have another natty hat by
then too.
Time
By Michelle Pierce
to
TALK
We all have times when there’s nothing we need more than to sit down
with a friend or loved one and have a cup of tea and a good chat.
Modern life is challenging
at the best of times, and
sometimes it does not
take much for every-day
stresses to tip the apple
cart, leaving us feeling
anxious, alone or even
depressed.
Even those who are
fortunate enough to have
a regular counsel within
their circle of family or
friends may feel that
the problems they are
experiencing go beyond
the scope of the kitchen
table or the bar-stool.
Relationship issues can
be testing when the very
person we might expect to
turn to for support is part
of the problem itself.
Many people’s first port
of call is the NHS, so if
you think you need some
time to talk, contact your
GP to find out what is on
offer. Initially you may
be offered computerised
cognitive behavioural
therapy (CCBT), followed
by face-to-face CBT
sessions. If you prefer not
to go through a GP, Health
in Mind is an NHS selfreferral
service - www.
healthinmind.org.uk/
There are charities which
support specific issues:
Relate (relationships),
Cruse (bereavement) and
Mind (mental health), and
many offer a sliding scale
of fees. Some employers
and schools, colleges and
universities provide free
therapy, so ask what is on
offer.
Cognitive and
behavioural therapies
(CBT) - based on the
way we think and the
way we behave. These
therapies recognise that
it is possible to change
or recondition our
thoughts and behaviour
to overcome specific
problems.
58

Psychoanalytical
and psychodynamic
therapies - based on
unconscious thoughts and
perceptions developed
during childhood, and
exploring how these affect
current thoughts and
behaviour. They include
Dynamic interpersonal
therapy, Jungian
therapy, Psychoanalysis,
Psychoanalytic therapy
and Psychodynamic
therapy.
Humanistic therapies
- focus on selfdevelopment,
growth and
responsibilities. They
seek to help us recognise
our strengths, creativity
and choice in the ‘here
and now’, and include
Existential therapy,
Gestalt therapy, Human
Givens psychotherapy,
Person / Client-centred
therapy, Psychosynthesis,
Reality therapy, Solutionfocused
brief therapy,
Transactional analysis and
Transpersonal psychology.
Arts therapies - use
creative arts such as
writing, music, art, drama
and dance in a therapeutic
environment.
Couples counselling
- aims to aid
communication and
facilitate change within an
intimate relationship.
Other therapies include
Compassion-focused
therapy, Equine-assisted
therapy, Eye movement
desensitisation and
reprocessing (EMDR),
Family/Systemic
therapy, Group therapy,
Integrative, Interpersonal
therapy, Mindfulness, Play
therapy, Psychosexual
therapy, Psychodrama ad
Schema therapy.
If you would like to find
out more try http://www.
counselling-directory.org.
uk/
Many counsellors
and psychotherapists
practice an integrative
approach, combining
several techniques. Local
Humanistic counsellor
Oliver Bettany http://
sussexcounselling.space
holds “Transactional
Analysis at the heart of
my practice into which
I weave other ways of
working.” Counselling is
ultimately about people,
and “the most important
factor in determining
whether your therapy
is successful is your
relationship with the
therapist,” - (Phillip
Hodson BACP). Oliver
agrees - “I offer a free
introductory session
over the phone, or face
to face, depending on
circumstances. This
session lasts half an hour
and provides the chance to
get a feel for one another.”
Yes, someone to talk
to. How nice. At times,
essential. Someone we
feel we are safe with can
be honest with and who
doesn’t expect us to have
all the answers. Someone
who listens and who is
there and, amazingly,
who seems to care. But
remember we’re not in
the kitchen or the pub any
more - “Talking therapies
aren’t meant to be cosy,
and you’re not there to
just chat and have coffee,”
says Phillip Hodson. “The
sessions are hard work”,
and just getting started
and turning up is a huge
step forward.
Three students from Uckfield Community
Technology College braved the cold
on Saturday 13 January to sell cakes to
passers-by in Uckfield High Street and
raise money for charity. Melissa Beavan
13, Rosanna Walker-Smith 12, Esme
Dawson 12 raised £85.02 by the end of
the day. They all attend UCTC, and this is
part of their Project in the Community.
They have also run a ‘guess the sweets
PARENTS PANTO
Parents at St. Philip's Catholic
annual Pantomime for the
children: Beauty and the Beast,
on 19 January. The panto was
written and directed by parent
Live music was provided
throughout the performance by
and Jo Coghill on double bass,
while Gerry Shelley staged an
impressive lighting show to
enhance the performance.
UCKFIELD ROTARY
SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY
Uckfield Rotary again hosted an afternoon tea
for local senior citizens at Uckfield Community
Technology College on Saturday 20 January.
Tea was served throughout the afternoon to
one hundred guests by girls and adults from
GirlGuiding Uckfield and District, supported
by members of the Rotary Club. Guests were
entranced by a dancing display from 4-6-yearold
pupils from local dance school Universal
Dance, before enjoying sandwiches and cakes.
They were then entertained by Nellie Dunne
and Ena Pickle, better known as The Pinny
Sisters, who had guests singing along to old
songs that everyone knew. The raffle raised
over £200 for the Children's Respite Trust to
fund support for local families.
The party has been going for many years.
However, one year there was heavy snow on
the day so the party couldn't go ahead. It was
re-arranged for late January, which everyone
agreed seemed a very convenient time to get
people together. And so it has continued.
ROCKS PARK SCHOOL ‘MISSION SURVIVAL’ DAY
monththatwas
On Monday 8 January Year 6 at Rocks
Park School launched their ‘Survivor’
learning journey with a ‘Mission
Survival’ day. The children came dressed
appropriately to survive in their chosen
environment.
Their challenge was to pack their
‘life-saving backpacks’, (taking advice
from Bear Grylls), and set off on their
adventure into the challenging outdoors!
Foraging for any natural materials that
they could find, they worked in teams,
to design and build a shelter. Their
creativity in working with their natural
surroundings was impressive as was their
teamwork. Everyone enjoyed learning
and problem solving together, producing
shelters to be proud of.
HOMELESS DONATION DROP OFF POINT AT ALLSORTS UCKFIELD
In December, Sara Moult wanted to help
the homeless in Brighton and take her
son Josh along to show him that everyone
is not as fortunate as us and how we can
help other people in need. She decided to
ask a friend and her son to come with her
to give out hot drinks, food and clothes.
James Anderson at Allsorts offered his
shop up as a drop off point. They had
an overwhelming response from the
community and, in mid-December, they
went out with all of the contributions and
helped many homeless people.
Sara decided to do it all again in January
and has said, "It is fantastic to teach our
kids empathy and that they can help
others and make a difference".
BREADY, STEADY - GO !
National bread week celebrates 10 years
24 Feb - 3 March
by Louise Addison
Bread is one of the oldest prepared foods. It dates back to Neolithic times, when
lumps of unleavened dough (made without yeast or other raising agents), were
placed on hot stones in the embers of a wood fire. Archaeologists have correlated
the development of human civilisations with the evolution of what is now
regarded as the modern species of bread wheat.
Somewhere along the way we also
discovered that if the porridge mixture
was left in the open air for a few days it
magically began to rise and could then be
baked into the most wonderful cloud-like
substance, leavened bread.
Although bread has occupied a central
role in our lives and diet it hasn’t all been
plain sailing. The rise of ultra-refined
industrial bread in the middle of the last
century led to mass-produced tasteless
dough devoid of much nutritional benefit.
More of us are making our own bread
too. There are bread-making classes and
online tutorials. At the most basic level,
it’s fairly straightforward to transform
flour, water, salt and yeast into a loaf
of bread and this is why the Real bread
Campaign is keen to get children
involved. The joy of nursing their first loaf
from raw ingredients to mouth-watering
yumminess slathered with butter and jam
should not be underestimated. From then
on it becomes a highly addictive pastime:
fruit loaf, crusty rolls, focaccia…the urge
to experiment and perfect the dough
takes over. It’s the perfect family activity…
and you can eat the results. What could
be nicer?
HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR PANCAKES?
Start Valentines Day with a crepe escape
communitymatters
by Sarah Davey
February 13th is Shrove Tuesday and I will be tossing pancakes with the best of
them. Usually I am a traditionalist and favour lemon and sugar topping but this
year in the interests of research I canvassed my friends for their favourite sweet
and savoury pancake fillings, and tried them out. Here are my top seven.
Nutty chocolate spread and banana - This
tasty filling bulks the pancakes out, and
makes the batter go further. Perfect if
there are lots of people at your pancake
supper.
Fresh mango and Greek yoghurt with a
splash of Cointreau - Very sophisticated
and utterly delicious
Fruits of the forest with vanilla ice cream
and a splash of Amaretto liqueur - This
one was a revelation. The liqueur works
brilliantly with the fruit, and the hot
pancakes with cold ice cream is a sublime
combination. Clearly I have classy
friends!.
Mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon - for a
British brunch-style pancake, or maybe a
savoury supper.
Wilted spinach and Ricotta cheese -
Sprinkle with a little fresh nutmeg and
this makes a very tasty vegetarian supper.
A LIFE CHANGING MOMENT
Join the Inca trail for Chestnut Tree House
Take on one of the world’s most iconic
trekking trails with Chestnut Tree House.
This classic Inca Trail challenge in Peru
encompasses three high mountain passes
– the highest at 4,200m - as well as hiking
through sub-tropical vegetation, cloud
The trekking will be tough, but worth it
when you reach the unforgettable sight of
Machu Picchu.
Chestnut Tree House cares for local
children with life-shortening conditions
– giving them the chance to do all
sorts of things that kids love doing.
These children live in the moment,
for the now. When you are facing the
greatest of challenges, it’s the smallest
of moments that really matter – taking
the time to relax, knowing your child is
safe; splashing in the hydrotherapy pool
together; talking to one of our nurses who
understands exactly how difficult things
are.
Join us on this mystical Inca trek and take
on the challenge. For yourself. For local
children and families. For living. For the
