Provi ex-president not charged
after phone in question vanishes
Amanda Stoll Assistant Editor
New Lenox
police declined
to file charges
Thursday, Feb.
15, after a nearly
two-month investigation
into
alleged inappropriate
content on
McGrath
a cellphone used by the Rev.
Richard J. McGrath, former
president of Providence Catholic
High School.
McGrath resigned on Dec. 22
amid the investigation, which
was opened Dec. 8 and led by
Sgt. Micah Nuesse of the New
Lenox Police Department.
After McGrath refused multiple
times to surrender the
phone — which was the property
of the high school — to
Providence officials and police,
McGrath’s lawyer, Patrick
Reardon, told police Dec. 27
the phone “no longer exists”
and it would be a “huge waste
of time” to look for it, according
to the police reports.
Without the phone, police say
in the report they could not file
charges.
According to the report, the
Rev. John Merkelis, now acting
president at Providence Catholic,
met with police on behalf
of a female student who allegedly
saw “what she believed to
be a photo of a nude 13-yearold
male” on McGrath’s phone
Dec. 8 during a wrestling meet
at the school.
The student reportedly told
a trusted employee, who informed
Providence Principal
John Harper, who then relayed
the information to Merkelis.
The trusted employee was
interviewed by police at the
police department on Dec. 11,
and she told police the female
student witness confided in her
shortly after seeing the image
on McGrath’s phone. Accord-
From feb. 16
ing to the report, the individual
said the witness was “visibly
shaking” and pale in the face
upon telling her what she had
seen.
On Dec. 12, Nuesse and
Merkelis met with McGrath in
McGrath’s office at the school,
according to the report. He was
asked by police and Merkelis
to hand over his cellphone, and
he reportedly refused to do so
despite Merkelis’ assertion that
the device was the property of
Providence Catholic.
At that time, New Lenox
Police Chief Brian Sterba said
police did not have enough
evidence to obtain a warrant
for the phone and therefore did
not have the authority to take it
without permission.
According to the report, Mc-
Grath “stood up and walked out
of the office, advising that he
needed to get to the theatre.”
“Unless Father Merkelis was
prepared to wrestle him for it,
we weren’t getting the phone,”
Sterba said.
After McGrath left, police
seized the computer on his desk,
which Merkelis confirmed was
McGrath’s exclusive computer.
The computer subsequently
was searched by the Computer
Crimes Unit of the Will County
State’s Attorney’s Office. No
relevant information was obtained,
according to the report.
Police reportedly contacted
Providence’s attorneys at Kopon
Airdo law firm on Dec. 27,
who indicated that Reardon had
told them “no evidence exists.”
According to the report, the
initial witness’s testimony was
then subpoenaed, and she was
interviewed on Jan. 11 at the
police station in lieu of an appearance
in front of a grand
jury.
The witness then told police
that she had approached Mc-
Grath at the wrestling meet to
greet him because he was sitting
alone on the bleachers.
According to the report, as she
approached from behind, Mc-
Grath “‘freaked out like when
someone saw something that
you don’t want them to see’ and
pulled his phone close to his
body.”
During her interview with
police, the witness described
the photo as that of a male
between the ages of 12 and
15 who was naked and standing
with his arms down at his
sides.
The report states that the boy
was pictured from the shoulders
to the knees, but that the
witness was unsure whether she
saw male genitalia or not.
Further contact was made
with both McGrath and his attorney
between Jan. 16 and 17,
in which Reardon reportedly
told police he did not “believe
that the cellular phone exists,”
according to the report.
The case officially was
closed by the New Lenox Police
Department Feb. 15 “due to
the absence of cooperation and
lack of further leads.”
Police asked that anyone with
any information related to this
case contact Nuesse at (815)
462-6100.
“If new evidence comes to
light, we will certainly evaluate
it,” Sterba told 22nd Century
Media via text message.
Police did not comment on
if there are any related ongoing
investigations involving Mc-
Grath, who worked at Providence
for more than 30 years.
“It would be inappropriate to
comment on any investigation
that may or may not be happening,”
Sterba said.
Merkelis and Reardon did
not immediately respond to requests
for comment.
Village of Mokena Board of Trustees
Bid granted for manhole repairs
Jon DePaolis, Freelance Reporter
A low bid on manhole rehabilitation
repairs will lead to the Village of
Mokena potentially saving 32 percent
on what trustees budgeted for the program.
Mokena trustees voted 4-0 Feb. 12
to award a contract to National Power
Rodding Corporation in the amount of
$49,010 for the 2018 fiscal year manhole
rehabilitation program. Trustees John
Mazzorana and George Metanias were
absent.
Staff Engineer Dan Peloquin told the
Village Board members the contract
will include cover replacement, chemical
grouting, curtain grouting, internal
chimney sealing and other repairs for
about 71 sanitary sewer manholes.
“At the end of January, bids were
opened, and we had seven bidders —
of which, the low bidder was National
Power Rodding Corp. of Chicago,”
Peloquin said.
The bid was $13,790 less than the next
closest bidder, RMS Utility Services.
Peloquin also noted that the company’s
bid came in $22,990 (about 32 percent)
less than the amount the Village
budgeted for the project, which was
$72,000.
Trustee Jim Richmond pointed out
the substantial difference between National
Power Rodding’s bid compared
to the others and asked Peloquin to
keep an eye on the project.
Annexation terms outlined
Later on, during the work session
that followed the regular meeting,
Assistant Village Administrator Kirk
Zoellner updated the board members
on the potential annexation of a 0.5
acre parcel of land located at 10724 W.
191st St.
Zoellner said Village staff, at the Village
Board’s direction, has been working
with the property owner to annex
the property, which is between Revere
and Schoolhouse Roads.
According to Zoellner, on Dec. 6,
staff received a letter from the property
owner’s attorney asking for certain
conditions to be met for an annexation
agreement, including: zoning the property
as commercial; exemption from
code violations for six months while
the existing structure is demolished;
Round it up
A brief recap of other issues covered
during the Feb. 12 board meeting:
•During the Discover Mokena
portion of the agenda, Cheryl Collins,
of Curtain Call Theatre, promoted
the upcoming performances of
“Enchanted April.” The romantic
comedy is scheduled to be performed
at the Mokena theater at 7:30 p.m.
March 2-3 and March 9-10, as well as
at 2 p.m. March 4 and March 11.
•As part of the Consent Agenda,
trustees voted 4-0 to grant a special
event request from the Mokena Lions
Club to hold its 31st annual Firecracker
Dance Weekend and Fundraiser
from July 13-14, and to allow the
organization to use the Front Street
commuter lot through the weekend.
•During the work session after the
regular meeting, the Village Board
members heard an update from
Zoellner on potential vendors for a
community survey. Four vendors were
discussed, and the Village Board
members asked staff for additional
information about the proposals made
by two of those vendors.
and waiver of water and sewer connection
fees.
On Jan. 18, staff met with the property
owner at Village Hall to negotiate
terms and set responsibilities and approximate
costs for the two parties,
such as: the property owner paying for
the demolition costs, to be completed
within 180 days of the annexation date;
the Village agreeing to not issue code
violations during that time period; the
Village zoning the land C2, highway
commercial; and the Village providing
a partial waiver of a future water and
sewer connection fee valued at a soft
cost of $2,000.
Trustees Joseph Budzyn and Jim
Richmond both said they were unsure
about granting the waiver on the connection
fees, but both said that if it
was what the rest of the Village Board
was comfortable with, they would be
onboard with it in order to move this
issue along.
Direction from the mayor and the
trustees was for staff to move ahead
with the agreement.
A public hearing is planned for Monday,
Feb. 26 Village Board meeting.

in and getting into a gokart
and racing with no base
knowledge, no background
knowledge, we gave them a
presentation to show all of
the science and math that’s
actually involved in the gokarts:
the momentum that
they should be trying to apply
at the turns, even the degrees
of angles in each turn
while looking at the track
map,” said Stephanie Cryer,
a foreign language and writing
teacher at D170’s STEM
Academy.
The STEM Magnet Academy
is a specialized middle
school within District 170
where students who have
placed exceptionally high in
math, science, reading and
writing are accepted into the
program.
Fifty-three seventh- and
eighth-grade students attended
the pilot program
at Accelerate, which was
developed by D170 teachers,
including Cryer, who
incorporated both Common
Students get seated in the go-karts Feb. 13 during the final
safety check before taking to the track at Accelerate Indoor
Speedway in Mokena. The students from Chicago Heights
School District 170 STEM Academy were the first group to
utilize the program. Amanda Stoll/22nd Century Media
Science standards into the
classroom portion of the day.
Those concepts had been
previously tackled during
the normal school day and
were reinforced at Accelerate
before the students even
set foot — or tire — on the
track.
“The curriculum that any
students get would be beneficial,
whether you’re building
upon what they already
know or creating new knowledge
that they’ll be able to
connect to in the classroom
later on in higher grades,”
Cryer said of the Accelerate
program, which is being
developed for students as
young as third grade through
seniors in high school.
Nick Pezzuto, director of
the STEM Academy, said
the Accelerate program created
a unique opportunity
for hands-on learning more
so than most other field trips.
“I think they’ve learned a
lot about friction and how
things slow them down in
speed and acceleration,”
Pezzuto said. “Usually, everybody’s
like, ‘If I push on
the gas, I go fast. If I hit the
brake, I slow down.’ That’s
true; however, there’s a lot
of other forces of motion
that are going on — angles,
mathematics — so they’re
applying that.
“I’ve seen some of them
how they took the turns differently
the third or fourth
lap. The first lap a lot of
people were crashing, second
lap they let off the gas,
they accelerated through the
turns. They’re starting to
learn because of the classroom.”
Following the classroom
portion of the program, students
walked the track to assess
the turns and learn about
the safety features of the
track, as well as their own
personal safety, and viewed
the parts inside a partially
disassembled kart.
“It’s like taking the hood
off a sports car, taking the
whole body off and getting
to see the inside and how it
runs,” Pezzuto said. “They
get to see all this before they
race. The race is the last
LW D210 officials share safety ideas in wake of Florida school shooting
Jason Maholy
Freelance Reporter
A Lincoln-Way Community
High School District 210
parent was “shaken to the
core” by the mass shooting
on Valentine’s Day in South
Florida and is calling on the
community to come together
and share ideas as to how to
prevent such a thing from
happening here.
Stacey Ripp, speaking
during the public comments
portion of the District 210
Board of Education meeting
on Thursday, Feb. 15
— one day after accused
mass murderer Nikolas Cruz
allegedly gunned down 17
people, most of them inside
Marjory Stoneman Douglas
High School in Parkland,
Florida — admitted she did
not have an organized speech
or any solutions, but stated
she believes it is her “personal
responsibility” to share her
ideas with the board and try
to help in some way.
“Unfortunately, [mass
school shootings] become an
epidemic now, and we definitely
need some changes,”
Ripp said. “We need some realistic
solutions, and we need
some rational dialogue as to
how we can address some of
these things. We can’t wait
until Washington does something
about gun control or
social media does something
to enact stricter rules. I just
think we need to do something,
even if it’s something
small.
“These are just thoughts
that have just come through
my brain today, which hurts.”
Ripp was brief, speaking
for fewer than three minutes,
but offered a range of
thoughts including wondering
whether her daughter
would know what action to
take if she saw a threatening
social media post or if there
was an active shooter at her
school. She also asked what
the District 210 community
can do in regard to school
security and school violence.
Ripp told the board she
spoke with her daughter
about the “see something,
hear something, say something”
initiative, which
has been implemented at
Lincoln-Way Central High
School by Principal Steve
Provis.
“But, sadly, I didn’t really
know what to tell her as far
as what actions to take if this
were something that actually
happened in one of our
schools,” Ripp said. “What
do we do? What should I tell
her? Should I tell her to run?
Do I tell her to barricade and
hide and be quiet?”
Among Ripp’s suggestions
were to create a task force
or committee composed of
teachers, counselors, administrators,
law enforcement
officials, parents and students
that could brainstorm
ideas and educate parents and
students on warning signs
to look for on social media.
She also proposed an annual
meeting that covers topics
such as how to look for signs
of depression or bullying, or
what to do if there is an active
shooter in school.
School Board President
Joseph Kirkeeng asked Ripp
to submit a list of her ideas
to school administrators for
further consideration. District
210 Superintendent
Scott Tingley said the board
was planning to talk about
school security during executive
session after the regular
meeting.
School board member
Ronald Lullo said he “totally
agrees” with Ripp, and
added the three District 210
schools have police officers
in the buildings at all times,
and that students know who
to go to in an emergency.
Lullo also said items related
to school security are planned
to be on the agenda for the
board’s meeting in March.
The district and law enforcement
conduct an active
shooter drill each year.
Will County Sheriff’s Police
would be in charge of any
such emergency at a Lincoln-
Way school, he added.
Provis, in the wake of the
Las Vegas shooting last Oct.
1, in which Stephen Paddock
is accused of killing 58 people,
established a “see something,
hear something, say
something” student group at
Central. The district is considering
establishing such
groups at East and West.
“We’ve talked about signs
to look for, what to do if
someone you know makes a
comment that they’re going
to hurt themselves or someone
else, or bring harm to a
friend or the building.” Provis
said. “The majority of things
that come to fruition here are
not cracking a big case, it’s
students coming to us and
telling us there is something
that is just not right.”
Tingley said district officials
routinely discuss security
issues, and that with the
Florida incident fresh on people’s
minds would be reviewing
its security procedures.
In other District 210 news,
the board voted to approve
spending for several items,
including a unanimous decision
to spend $1.87 million
to lease 41 buses for the next
five school years. The district
will finance the lease
payment with a loan with an
Summit Hill officials approve contracts to promote safety, communication
Megann Horstead
Freelance Reporter
The Summit Hill District
161 Board of Education is
looking to promote safety
and communication at its facilities.
At a Feb. 14 regular meeting,
officials approved the
purchase and installation of
exterior cameras at Arbury
Hills, Frankfort Square, Indian
Trail and Dr. Julian Rogus
schools.
District 161 has identified
a need for additional security
monitoring, in part, because
these locations are to be used
as voting locations. The project
involves configuration to
the school network and setup
at predefined entrances that
voters and non-personnel
use to enter the buildings.
Costs for each facility is
$4,000, or $16,000 in total,
and it includes the infrastructure
needed to allow
District 161 to add additional
cameras at other areas of
the buildings at a later date.
A motion was also passed
to replace the existing Voice
Over IP phone system at
Summit Hill Junior High
School.
It is the district’s desire to
purchase a replacement that
will be more reliable and
promote a common platform
across school facilities.
The existing VOIP phone
system has reached the end of
its life. Over time, the district
has noted frequent power
outages with the service line
and that multiple systems do
not work together.
In a related development,
Round it up
A brief recap of action and discussion Feb. 14 at a regular
meeting of the Summit Hill District 161 Board of Education:
•The Regional Office of Education recently notified the
superintendent in writing of minor violations at some of the
schools that need to be corrected. As such, the district’s
buildings and grounds manager is developing a plan to get in
compliance.
•Officials reviewed the results of a staff interest survey
for academic summer camps, and the district is currently
working with interested sponsors to collect proposals, which
will require approval based on grade level span and following
this year’s science, technology, reading, engineering, art and
math (STREAM) focus. Programming is designed for incoming
first- through fifth-grade students, and information and
registration forms will be sent to students and their families
at a later date regarding the camps, which will run for two
hours and last for six days in August.
the district’s contract with
First Communication for
technology infrastructure
services is nearing its end.
The board obtained several
quotes from local vendors
and current providers and
went on to award a threeyear
contract to Comcast.
Installation of the new
VOIP phone system is anticipated
to begin during
spring break and allow the
district to review and make
adjustments to the system as
needed.
Bid for pre-purchase of
chiller equipment OK’d
Also at the meeting, D161
officials awarded a $139,300
bid to Temperature Equipment
Corporation for the
pre-purchase of chiller
equipment.
The measure, as approved
in a 5-1 vote, will support a
replacement project at Dr.
Julian Rogus School. Board
Member Joy Murphy was
the lone dissenting vote.
The Board of Education
is required to follow a twopart
process involving prepurchase
and installation of
equipment.
The bid is packaged with
technology to reduce concerns
for noise. Recently,
the district replaced some
chiller equipment at Hilda
Walker School only to be
met with complaints. As
such, Tria Architecture has
been enlisted to provide vibration
isolators underneath
the units and some sound
testing and notification of
the existing unit.
If sound becomes a concern,
additional allowances
are included in the project cost
to abate it post-installation.
The vendor has been notified
that those units are to be
delivered no later than June
15.
District 161 intends to get
the air conditioning up and
running before school starts
in the fall.

is an increase from the terms
of the current five-year lease,
under which each bus costs
$9,220.
District 210 could have
bought buses for $79,723
each, which had the district
been able to sell the vehicles
after the agreement
ends would have cost $6,700
more over the life of the contract.
Board members also voted
4-2 to spend $1.88 million
for “general maintenance”
that includes life safety items
at Central and East, bleacher
replacement in the East gymnasium,
and “access control
upgrades” that includes twoway
cameras at school entrances
at all three schools.
The money is among $3.6
million being allocated to
capital projects that will be
undertaken this summer.
Board members Chris
Lucchetti and Aaron Janik
voted against the proposal.
Lucchetti cited the need to
be conservative with spending,
particularly with items
such as bleacher repairs,
which he defined as discretionary
rather then essential.
Lucchetti was also referencing
spending $1.08 million
to resurface the parking
lot and tennis courts at East.
The measure was approved
4-1, with Lucchetti voting
“no” and Janik abstaining.
Lucchetti questioned how,
with the capital projects fund
depleted, the district would
address an unforeseen maintenance
issue that could arise.
Money for such an emergency
would come out of the
operations and maintenance
fund, according to district officials.
You walk the track
During those “kart talks,”
they not only talked about
the mechanics and engineering
of the karts, but they also
discussed the solar technology
that helps to power the
racing facility, which Accelerate
General Manager
James Galdikas said gave
them an opportunity to talk
about sustainability.
“I think that the most important
thing that they all
take away is that learning
can be fun,” Galdikas said.
“The lesson plans are very
adaptable to what we’re able
to do here.”
For nearly three hours, the
students learned about the
karts, walked the track and
studied the components of
the karts before getting in
the driver’s seat. Once behind
the wheel, Pezzuto said
they got the chance to test
out what they’d learned.
“Every lap should be better
than the previous one, usually
because they’re learning as
they’re trying to apply what
they did today to the actual
track,” he said. “That’s what
we’re looking for.
“It’s been proven that if
you give the person handson
or a child hands-on,
they’ll learn quicker, and it
will stay with them longer,”
Pezzuto said.
In addition to the knowledge
they gained from handson
learning, the experience
was challenging in other
ways. For many of the students
on the trip, it was their
first time ever behind the
wheel and a step way outside
of their comfort zone.
“I think most of them have
been extremely nervous, no
matter how confident of personalities
they are,” Cryer
said. “I’ve definitely seen
about 90 percent of them
go a little white in the face
when it was time to get into
the kart.”
Police Reports
Police: Speeding leads
to discovery of warrants
Alexus K.M. Zepeda, 21,
of 562 E. Cass St. in Joliet,
was arrested Jan. 31 on two
outstanding warrants.
According to police reports,
an officer on patrol
traveling westbound in the
10300 block of West 191st
Street observed a vehicle
traveling eastbound at what
appeared to be a high rate
of speed. Prior to pulling
the vehicle over, the officer
ran a check on the vehicle’s
registration, where it was
discovered that the registered
owner, identified as
Zepeda, had two outstanding
in-state warrants and
the vehicle’s registration
was expired.
The officer then initiated
a traffic stop and, reportedly,
found a male subject
in the driver’s seat and
Zepeda in the passenger
seat. The driver was able to
provide his driver’s license
and proof of insurance,
both reportedly valid, and
was released with a verbal
warning for speeding and
driving with an expired
registration. Zepeda was
placed under arrest and
later transferred to Will
County Adult Correctional
Facility.
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Retiring Sandburg principal reflects
on career dedicated to teaching,
learning
“It may take you a while to realize
your dreams, but if it’s your
dream, go for it.”
Sandburg Principal Deb Baker
shares those words of advice with
her students all the time.
At the end of this school year,
Baker will retire from her more
than 23-year teaching career, 17
years of which have been spent
with Consolidated High School
District 230.
Though she always wanted to be
a teacher, Baker did not immediately
go to college for teaching after
she completed high school, but
she did not let that stop her from
later following her dreams.
“I graduated in 1973 and, even at
that time, while feminism certainly
existed, opportunities for girls
were slow in coming,” Baker said.
Baker got married in 1980 and
started a family in 1983. After having
two of her three children, she
made the decision to enroll at the
University of Illinois at Chicago to
become a teacher.
“There was no stopping me
then,” she said. “I wanted to get my
degree work done. After I earned
my undergraduate degree, I went
to get my master’s.”
Baker was driven by a passion
for teaching others. When she was
in sixth through eighth grades, she
was a reading tutor for first-graders.
As a teenager, she coordinated
a summer volleyball program for
children, teens and adults that had
roughly 360 participants and lasted
for nearly 10 years in Canaryville.
“To me, that was a form of teaching,
making sure kids had something
to do and were active in a
positive way,” she said.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Recreating a priceless winter
memory, 11 years later
This was not the first igloo built
in the Chicago suburbs by members
of the Steele family.
No, that was 11 years ago, when
their two oldest boys were ages
7 and 9 — the same ages as their
two youngest boys are now — in
a different town, during a different
blizzard.
This time, during the weekend
of Feb. 10 and now residing on Lilac
Lane in Tinley Park, Paul and
Tammy Steele enlisted the help of
Brandon, 9, and Aaron, 7, to recreate
a family tradition that made
headlines nearly a decade ago.
“You need the right kind of snow
and enough,” Tammy said. “You
can’t use the powdery stuff.”
When the recent blizzard
dropped approximately a foot of
snow on the Steele’s front lawn,
Paul took out his snowblower and
began to form a mound toward
the entrance of the house. He even
plowed the lawn to add to the pile.
After three separate ice baths, a
10-foot-high-by-20-foot-wide ice
structure had been formed — stable
and warm enough that four of
the Steeles spent the night inside,
where they slept on two queen-size
air mattresses.
“We made like an avalanche,”
Brandon explains.
Blocking off the entrances from
the wind “made a huge difference,”
Tammy added.
Layered up in clothing and
wrapped inside heavy sleeping
bags — a small amount of heat
generated from a three-wick candle
— both Brandon or Aaron said
they were not cold.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Basketball tournament to raise
money for after-school program
When Bill Leach noticed that an
area of Lockport was being underserved,
he took the initiative to do
something about it.
A resident of Plainfield, Leach
is a member and community leader
of Shiloh Missionary Baptist
Church in Lockport. When he became
involved in the community,
he found out about Fairmont and
began researching the area to figure
out what issues needed to be
addressed, and how he could help.
In 2014, Leach founded the organization
Masses of Basketball
and Academics that offers a free
after-school program called Play
for Rings. The Rotary Club of
Lockport has partnered with MBA
to host a basketball tournament
fundraiser March 10 for the 100
students involved.
“I was looking for some project
to help improve the community in
some sort of way, and Bill runs the
Play for Rings program, and he
spoke at one of our meetings, so
I thought this would be a perfect
fit to try to help some kids in the
community by putting on a tournament
and hoping to raise some
money for them,” Lockport Rotary
Club President John McNulty
said.
Play for Rings is held at Shiloh
Missionary Baptist Church Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The inaugural Play for Rings
Charity Basketball Tournament
is to be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
March 10 at Lockport Township
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Valentine’s Day-themed mystery
solved at New Lenox Lions Club
event
Mysteries of the heart can be
complex, but members of the New
Lenox Lions Club cracked the
case of how to have a wonderful
Valentine’s weekend with a firstof-its-kind
event.
On Feb. 10, the organization
hosted a Live Mystery Show &
Dinner at Lions Community Center
and was co-chaired by Lions
Steve Kuyawa and Dan Fremgen
that encouraged attendees to put
their heads and hearts together to
catch a jewel thief. While it can
be difficult to solve a crime, the
event uncovered clear evidence
that community is key to hosting
a successful fundraiser.
Approximately 160 guests came
together for the event — which replaced
the Lions Blizzard Dance
fundraiser — and Lincoln-Way
Central LEO (Leadership, Education
and Opportunity) Club volunteers
donated their time to help
with the set-up, serving, clean-up
and everything in between.
All money raised will go toward
funding the many service projects
of the Lions Club, such as its hearing
and sight initiatives.
Later in the night, House of
Fools led attendees through a
mystery that involved a church
fundraiser, a curious cast of characters
and $1.5 million in missing
jewels. The troop’s director, Frann
Carnivele, said she enjoys the collaboration
fostered through live
mystery shows.
“It’s so fun to get the audience
involved,” she said. “It’s fun to
have them be a part of what’s
happening, and the interaction
is always a great way to involve
the community with this type of
show.”
Flowers by Steen Productions
delivers more than 100 orders on
Valentine’s Day
Feb. 14 is a day of love.
It is a day for significant others
to celebrate each other. It also is a
day when an abundance of flowers
are seen in every corner of a store,
on desks of co-workers and all
over social media. Last Wednesday,
Flowers by Steen Productions
in Homer Glen delivered
more than 100 flower orders after
months of planning for Valentine’s
Day.
“We generally will, weeks
ahead, we start to gather up inventory;
that’s the start of it,” said
Karen Steen, owner of Flowers
by Steen and a Lockport resident.
“Seeing how much ribbon we
have in stock, how many vases
we have in stock, all the enclosure
cards, we take an inventory of balloons,
and we also have to grab
candy at times, so there’s just a lot
going into it.”
Steen orders the flowers that she
and her staff will use to make arrangements
at Christmastime.
“It’s kind of hard to think about
Valentine’s Day when you’re still
in the midst of the holiday,” she
said.
On any given day, there are four
full-time employees at the shop.
On Feb. 14, there were 12 people
working to prepare flower arrangements
and deliver the flowers.
“It’s very busy, but I love it,”
said Lori Franze, a friend of Steen
who helped out at the flower shop.
Seniors share special moments at
Valentine Luncheon
For area seniors, the Senior Valentine
Luncheon is an opportunity
to celebrate Valentine’s Day with
style.
The annual Frankfort Park District
event, which has been held
each year since 2001, brought
roughly 60 residents of Frankfort
and surrounding areas to the
Founders Community Center on
Feb. 14 for an afternoon filled with
friends, food and live music.
The lunch — catered by Little
Joe’s Famous Pizza and Restaurante
in New Lenox — included foods
such as chicken, pasta, mashed potatoes
and salad.
“This year, we did end up falling
on Fat Tuesday; we do have paczki
as our dessert,” said Cali DeBella,
Frankfort Park District’s special
events coordinator. “So that was
just kind of a little special.”
Seniors chatted at tables decorated
with red and pink balloons,
while singer Mike Valentine made
the rounds, performing classic oldies
tunes.
“They’re just out to enjoy time
with their friends, some music
from the past and just enjoy getting
ready for Valentine’s Day,”
DeBella said.
Her favorite part of the event is
seeing how excited the seniors get,
she said.
“Depending on the time restrictions
and when we have room, I
like when they get up and start
dancing,” she said.
We have a lot in
common.
We both want
and believe we deserve
information that impacts the
livelihood of our community.
That includes everything
from the reputation
of our hometown and its
institutions to, much more
importantly, the safety of
our children — our future.
Over the past two months,
a person of power and influence
decided to put those
things at risk when he chose
to protect himself above the
rest.
The Rev. Richard Mc-
Grath, longtime and former
president of Providence
Catholic High School,
refused to surrender a cellphone
that did not belong
to him.
The phone, which under
his control was alleged
to contain a lewd photo
of a juvenile, belonged to
Providence Catholic. But
when police asked for it and
the school demanded it, he
walked out of the room.
The cellphone has not
been seen since. McGrath’s
lawyer even told police not
to bother looking for it; that
would be a “huge waste of
time,” he reportedly said.
There is a lot to unwrap
with this case, most
contained within a police
report released Friday,
Feb. 16, that announced
no charges would be filed
against McGrath. There is
a lot we just do not know at
this point, and it would not
be fair to any party to levy
accusations without more
information.
That being said, we deserve
more information.
It appears it will not be
coming from the longtime,
entrusted leader in question,
McGrath.
So, from where will it
come?
How about from the New
Lenox Police Department,
which needs to answer
questions about the disappearance
of the phone and
why it cannot do more?
Or from Providence
Catholic and the diocese,
McGrath’s employer for
30 years, on why it did
not or could not attain the
cellphone and on if there
have ever been any other
concerns about McGrath’s
behavior over the past three
decades.
This information has been
sought by us, and I’m sure
by other outlets, to little
avail so far. Not that we are
giving in by any means,
but there is another group
from which information can
come.
You, the public.
Maybe this story is over,
and there is no more to say
Attention Realtors
— an allegation was levied,
but no evidence exists to
more allegations. That’s
certainly possible.
Then again, maybe the
story is just beginning.
mean no charges ever. New
Lenox Police Chief Bob
Sterba assured us that if new
information came to light, it
would be properly evaluated.
If that information is out
there, we challenge you to
help us bring it forward.
Our institutions — from
schools to police departments
— are used to handling
aggressive reporters
who request information.
(Note: That will not tame
our responsibility. We hope
you can trust us to keep asking
tough questions.)
Historically, though,
a passionate, concerned
and courageous populace
has been the backbone of
innumerable light-shining
crusades.
While much easier said
than done, the responsibility
is on us all to hold the
powerful accountable for
their actions.
If anyone has any information
related to the Rev.
Richard McGrath and the
alleged illicit photo, call the
New Lenox Police Department
(Sgt. Micah Nuesse) at
(815) 462-6100.
We urge you to go to
police with any information
related to McGrath; however,
if you would like to
speak with anyone at 22nd
Century Media, please feel
free to call our lead reporter
Amanda Stoll or myself at
(708) 326-9170.
You may not have information,
but you should still
be concerned — about the
derailed investigation and
about the disrespect elicited
by McGrath. If you are,
question police, question
the school and the diocese,
question us.
McGrath is out at Providence,
but if there’s more, it
is up to us as a community
to unite and say: We will
not accept disappearing evidence.
We do not condone a
trusted leader who ducks his
responsibilities. We will not
be complicit.
Robin’s Nest
The one thing
most needed
Robin Melvin
Contributing Columnist
You may be familiar
with Luke’s story of
two sisters. Can you
imagine Martha and Mary’s
excitement as they prepared
their home for Jesus’ visit?
I see Martha bustling in the
kitchen, frustrated that her
sister won’t help. I get it. I’d
want things perfect, too.
Martha complains to
Jesus and we hear his
gentle correction: “Martha,
Martha, you are worried
and upset about many
things, but only one thing
is needed. Mary has chosen
what is better, and it will not
be taken away from her.”
Mary sets aside busy-ness
and cultural norms and sits
with Jesus. She’s ready to
learn and grow her faith.
More than ever, this has
become my focus, too: sitting
with Jesus. Sometimes
talking, sometimes quiet.
Sometimes alone with a
cup of coffee watching the
sunrise, sometimes with my
grandbabies watching them
play and chatter and giggle.
Not because I’m super
spiritual. It’s the only way
to hang on to my sanity. My
doing, doing, doing has to
be balanced with just being.
Being still with Jesus. It
also makes me easier to live
with. Just ask my husband.
Practicing the presence
of Jesus is vital. Not as part
of a religious checklist but
because our lives demand it,
don’t they? Staying connected
reminds us He’s always
with us. He sits beside
us in the not-so-beautiful,
not-so-happy moments, too.
We all have our inner
human struggles. Pride,
fear, cynicism, anger.
You name it. Then there’s
the outward stuff of life
experience that can throw
us off-kilter. It’s easy to
detach or get distracted. We
lose our bearings and run
on spiritual fumes. Peace
and joy, even our hope, can
trickle through the cracks of
a broken spirit.
My friend, God calls us to
spiritual rest. Let’s choose
“what is better.” Sitting with
Jesus, we find our bearings,
our center. If we let Him,
He’ll bring light and life
to any situation. He’s here.
He’s got our todays and our
tomorrows.
In these weeks leading to
Easter and beyond, may we
choose well. May we create
new habits and deeper connections.
I pray the busyness
in us and around us,
our worries and our upsets,
will not keep us from The
One most needed.
Peace and quiet for your
journey.
Mokena residents perform in ‘Frankenstein’
Megann Horstead
Freelance Reporter
It was a rainy November
night when a monster came
roaring to life. Its creator
was so horrified by his creation,
he ran away.
For those who have read
author Mary Shelley’s
“Frankenstein,” this is a
moment at which point the
novel’s central message
conjures questions for many
to ponder.
“What drew me most to
it was doing a scary play
because I’ve never done
anything like that,” said
Sean Gallagher, a Mokena
resident and a fourth-year
Lewis University student,
who plays the role of Frankenstein’s
monster.
Gallagher said it brings
great meaning to know
“Frankenstein” will be his
final performance to cap off
his senior year.
“There is a little bit of an
added pressure, I guess,” he
said. “No, I wouldn’t say
it’s nerves, but it’s definitely
this is the [production] to go
out on.”
And for one Mokena Intermediate
School student,
the impression left from
reading that novel-turnedplay
is hoped to resonate
with audiences when Philip
Lynch Theatre puts on its
adaptation.
“I think that they will
have second-thoughts about
creating things,” said Elliot
Bilus, a fifth-grader,
who plays the role of Dr.
Frankenstein’s younger
brother.
“I like that since I’m
so tall, my character is
supposed to be tiny,” Bilus
said. “I like how
it’s a challenge to be an
11-year-old trying to play a
9-year-old.”
“Frankenstein” will take
people back in time to the
regency era between 1811
and 1820 to indulge in the
story of a scientist who
brings a monster to life,
all while touching on the
themes of knowledge, love
and free will.
“Honestly, I love the
book,” said Christy Carlson,
a Lockport resident
and a third-year Lewis University
student. “I read it
a couple times. … When I
heard we were doing ‘Frankenstein’
for the show, I was
just intrigued with what the
script was going to be like
and see how the playwright
adapted it from the classic.
When I read it, it was,
like, super eerie and really
fun. It just sounded like a
lot of fun because a lot of
times you see a lot of horror
shows in TV or movie form,
[but] you don’t see them a
lot in play form in the theatre.
So, I just think that it
[would be] a lot of fun to be
involved in.”
Carlson plays a countess
and serves as part of
the ensemble in the Philip
Lynch Theatre production.
She said it is challenging to
bring her roles to the stage,
especially considering the
dichotomy of playing one
of the tavern wenches and
the countess.
“It’s like you’re upperclass
then lower-class, and
it’s just so different,” Carlson
said. “It’s fun because
you change the way you
walk, the way you [assume]
how would your character
think, how would she
move, how does she respect
herself, all these different
mentalities going.
These are two very different
characters.”
Auditions were held
in December for “Frankenstein”
and rehearsals
for the cast followed in
January.
Philip Lynch Theatre
Manager Jo Slowik said she
thinks the cast is ready to
take to the stage.
“I think it’s just proof
positive that we’re here to
support the arts,” School
of Rock Mokena General
Manager Kathy Gentile
said, noting that the school’s
tagline is “Saving rock ‘n’
roll, one kid at a time.”
“[We’re] introducing music
to the area, making sure
we keep it alive and going,”
Gentile said.
In 2018, the educational
company that operates and
franchises the Mokena location
is celebrating its 20th
anniversary.
School of Rock currently
has 200 educational programs
located around the
globe.
“I think that it’s fantastic
that [the Mokena location
has] been going for 10
years, and it’s still growing,”
School of Rock Mokena
Owner Mark Doyle said.
“It’s obviously a concept
that works, and it’s great for
the kids everywhere.”
Compared with similar
operations, School of Rock
separates itself with its performance
program.
“Unlike just regular lessons,
which I certainly grew
up with, this gives kids the
experience and opportunity
to be on a stage and be part
of a band as part of their
learning process,” Gentile
said. “[It’s] like the team
sport of music.”
School of Rock Mokena
Studio Coordinator Zack
Marshall agreed.
“I think that keeping that
craft of music playing, but
then also adding the ability
to share that with other
students and helping them
form their own bands, seeing
that go on for 20 years
is, I think, is pretty impactful,
plain to see,” Marshall
said.
School of Rock Mokena
is all about curating a new
generation of music-minded
students who get to balance
education with all the fun
and awesomeness of a great
jam session, according to its
website.
Gentile has worked at the
Mokena location the last six
years.
“I’ve had several students
for several years, and that’s
the rewarding part of it,”
Gentile said. “It’s to see
how [the school] changes
over time and the confidence
[students’ begin to
exude] and just the experience.”
Consider Marshall, a
past student of School of
Rock Mokena. He currently
works as the program’s studio
coordinator after being
enrolled as a student in it for
several years.
“From being a student
and working here, I’ve gotten
to see people not even
know what instrument they
want to play, and now we
have them playing the main
stages at Summerfest in
Milwaukee,” Marshall said.
“They came in here not even
knowing what they wanted
to play, much less how to
play it. I got to grow up with
a lot of those people.”
About five years ago, he
decided to check out the
Mokena program after hearing
about it.
“It sounded just different
from your normal, like,
playing sports or going
home and playing for mom
and dad,” Marshall said. “I
think the whole band aspect
of it really made it something
that peaked my interest
a lot more.”
Prior to enrolling in
School of Rock Mokena,
Marshall had completed
some drum lessons at home.
“This was the first time
I started to take music seriously
is when I started
taking lessons here,”
he said.
Since then, Marshall said
he has drawn inspiration
from School of Rock Mokena
staff. He said having instructors
that teach, as well
as play in local bands, has
been a transformative part
of his music education.
“Getting to see that they’re
literally practicing what
they preach and it’s working
out successfully for them,
I think, is a huge inspiration,”
Marshall said. “Instead
of just having someone
come to your house [and
say,] ‘This is what someone
taught me, so now I’m going
to teach it to you.’ It’s actually
being put into use for
themselves.”
Marshall is currently enrolled
in community college
and completing his general
education coursework. He
has some plans in mind to
put his passion for music
to use as a possible stage or
tour manager.
“Hopefully, [I’ll] get
some degree in some type
of music [program,]” Marshall
said.
Marshall gave credit to
School of Rock Mokena’s
Music Director Joe Gentile
for mentoring him over the
years.
“I think that he does a
great job of keeping everybody’s
individual interests
and everybody’s
strengths and weaknesses
in mind when he’s casting
for songs,” Marshall
said.
Kathy acknowledged that
Joe does a great job and
said the group experience
is a big part of what makes
School of Rock work the
way it does.
“We want to give the
band experience, which is
one thing, but then to appropriately
challenge all of
the students, so that they’re
learning techniques,” she
said. “We’re pushing them
just a little bit to expose
[them] to different experiences
on stage.”
Doyle recently took over
ownership of the Mokena
location and is excited to
carry out the traditions set
forth by School of Rock.
“[I] just love watching
the kids, and I’m excited to
see new kids come in and
grow through the system,”
he said.
Doyle’s vision for the
Mokena location’s future is
simple.
“We’re just looking to
keep growing,” he said.
“They’ve been doing a
great job here, getting more
and more kids in here. I
look forward to that continuing.”

The Dish
Bold flavors, cocktails drive seasonal menu at Bonefish
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
Bonefish Grill’s menu has
boldly gone where the Orland
Park seafood spot has
never gone before.
While the restaurant’s latest
specials menu features its
perennial favorite wild orchid
Hawaiian martini ($9.40), and
a new sea scallop preparation
includes some noodles that
have been popular elsewhere
on the menu, Bonefish, in
general, is trying new things.
And it all starts with the
Woodford Reserve old fashioned
($10.90). A new take
on an old favorite, the seasonal
cocktail focuses on the
bourbon, with a muddled orange
wedge and the requisite
Angostura bitters, garnished
with a Bordeaux cherry and
orange peel. But it also plays
to Bonefish’s love of inhouse
infusions with a custom
vanilla bean syrup.
“It’s a good, warm-flavored
drink,” according to
manager Kyle Margentina.
“[The infusions] are one of
the things that sets us apart.”
The same approach can be
seen in the infused Manhattan
($9.90), a blend of Maker’s
46 Kentucky bourbon, featuring
a house-made infusion
of Cinzano Rosso vermouth
with fresh rosemary and orange
peel. Served on the rocks
and, again, with a Bordeaux
cherry, it was so popular it
got fast-tracked to the main
menu, according to longtime
server Emily Sheehan.
“Huge hit,” Sheehan said.
“Old, classic drinks are huge
again.”
Another classic featuring
a new spin can be found in
the seasonal menu’s Thaiinspired
Georges Bank sea
scallops ($27.90). The dish
features wood-grilled scallops,
served atop rice noodles
that regulars might recognize
from the restaurant’s shrimp
pad thai dish. The shellfish
come with fresh tomato and
red onion, but Sheehan said
the sauce — a sweet and
spicy coconut sauce infused
with ginger, inspired by a curry
— is what brings it home.
“There’s the pasta, yes, but
the scallops in that sauce do
it,” she said.
The crispy shallots in there
don’t hurt, either.
“We have used crispy shallots
1,000 times,” Sheehan
said with a laugh. “Everybody
loves them.”
The infusions pop up again
in the new Italian seafood risotto
($18.90). The featured
shellfish in this one are shrimp
and bay scallops, served
alongside asparagus, tomato
and red onion, all atop a pesto
Parmesan risotto, finished
with fresh basil. Sheehan said
the secret to what makes it
great is the infused herb pesto,
which can be seen as a green
edge around the risotto.
“It’s been really popular so
far,” she said.
The new fish specials are
highlighted by a fresh cobia
($27.90), prepared Caribbean-style.
The fish itself
is mild, with a firm texture
similar to mahi-mahi, and because
it feeds on crustaceans
it has a sweeter taste than
many fish.
As Bonefish is wont to do,
it wood-grills the Atlantic fish
fillet and then serves it atop
The Italian seafood risotto ($18.90) at Bonefish Grill
features shrimp and bay scallops, along with asparagus,
tomato and red onion, all in a pesto Parmesan risotto,
finished with fresh basil.
a piece of grilled pineapple,
alongside three jumbo shrimp
— like the fish, lightly blackened.
It all gets topped with
a vanilla rum butter sauce
and toasted coconut, with a
choice of two fresh sides. But
Bonefish, while mostly riffing
on a prior presentation
of the aforementioned mahimahi,
also mixes things up by
adding a pineapple salsa.
“We serve mango salsa
year-round,” Sheehan said.
“Pineapple is a nice treat.”
And diners craving for
something sweet to finish
the meal can look to the addition
of a chocolate lava
cake ($8.50). It is, of course,
served warm, with the essential
molten center, and
comes topped with fresh
strawberries and house-made
whipped cream, accented by
shredded mint.
Pro tip: Bring a loved one
or a friend, and ask for extra
spoons; the cake is easily big
enough to serve two.
Note: Bonefish Grill’s seasonal
specials typically run
for 5-6 weeks.
Award-Winning Tinley Park: The Perfect Home for Brookside Meadows
Ready to make a move?
Great, your first decision is
done! Now focus on location.
There are hundreds of choices
in the Chicago area. Look for
one that is well-established
with attractive neighborhoods,
community amenities like parks
and recreation, excellent schools
and a thriving economic base.
Check for conveniences like
transportation and necessities
like police, fire and water. It
might seem impossible to find
the perfect location but rest easy.
All the ingredient of a
perfect location are mixed
together in one spot: awardwinning
Tinley Park. It is
attractive and offers residents
more than just about every
other community including a
history of appreciating home
values like the homes found in
Brookside Meadows, the
awardwinning Tinley Park
neighborhood developed
by Crana Homes. Crana
homes are beautifully designed,
quality built and hold their
resale value.
So, what makes Tinley Park a
special location for new home
buyers? More than half of all
buyers are looking to raise a
family. After extensive research,
Bloomberg BusinessWeek
declared Tinley Park is The
Best Place in America
to Raise a Family. It’s an
impressive credential from a
respected source!
But that’s not all. Movoto
online Real Estate blog placed
Tinley Park in a list of Top Ten
Small Cities in America To
Move To. The list is based on
data collected from the Census
and the Bureau of Labor
Statistics on 100 cities under
60,000 population.
Another important factor is
the local business climate and
Tinley Park once again stands
out. The U.S. Department of
Commerce gave a national
award to Tinley for its
Excellence in Economic
Development. An impressive
recognition that acknowledges
the economic health of the
community. So Tinley Park is
established as a great location.
Now, the next step is to zero
in on a home. In Tinley Park,
the ‘gem inside the gem’ is
Brookside Meadows. These
impressive luxury townhomes
have award-winning designs,
energy-efficient features and
prices holding in the upper
$200s - including site. Brookside
Meadows currently features two
very popular luxury townhome
designs. The Fahan II is a
beautiful 3,303 total square foot
home (2,087’ living space and a
1,216’ basement) with a twocar
garage and cement driveway.
The split level layout has three
(optional four) bedrooms
and twoand- half baths. The
Lennan II is a comfortable
two (or optional three) bedroom
split level home with a spacious
upper level master suite and an
optional cathedral ceiling. The
Lennan II has 3,167 square
feet of total space (2,118’ living
space and 1,049’ basement) and
a two-car garage.
Both designs have large open
space kitchens, custom maple
cabinets and sleek granite
countertops. A stately loft
overlooks an impressive and
relaxing great room. Gorgeous
oak is used on floors, doors,
railings and trim. Ceramic tile
covers the floors of the foyer as
well as the bathrooms - which
also feature cultured marble
vanity tops. A full lookout
basement and a patio are
included.
Options include a fireplace,
coffered ceilings, skylights and
a soaker tub in the master bath.
A walkout basement is available
in some layouts. Energy-saving
features like a high-efficiency
furnace and Lo-E glass are
standard. Other ‘green’ features
include an Energy Miser hot
water heater, vented soffits,
1.75” insulated entrance doors
and energy efficient appliances.
Smoke detectors, Lake
Michigan water and sprinklers
are also standard. Specs and
options can change so contact a
sales associate for details.
Look no further.
Brookside Meadows is
exciting because there’s more
people going this year than
That number was mostly
enhanced by the Knights’
first-place 200-yard freestyle
relay of Josh Fox, Murphy,
Danny O’Brien and Joe
Bozzi (1:27.98), which was
seeded No. 3 coming in but
chopped almost four seconds
off its previous season best
“Everybody swam out of
“It’s all a tribute to coach
good job with us this
preparing us.”
ultimate tribute to endurance.
After winning the 500 freestyle
(4:38.85), Bozzi had
about five minutes to catch
his breath before helping the
200 free relay advance.
“I actually surprised myself,”
Bozzi said of his energized
effort. “But without my
teammates Danny, Josh and
Tim I wouldn’t have been
able to do that.”
With a state shot on the
line, first-year coach Bell
rolled the dice that Bozzi
could handle the test.
“I was a little nervous
about that,” Bell said. “It’s
tough. He swam out of his
mind in the 500, and to come
out and swim again is tough.
He’s done it a few times (this
year), but it’s not something
“It’s crazy,” O’Brien said.
“I didn’t expect to get three
events at state this year, but
I’m really proud. We killed
the relay that we got to state.
I’m just really happy.”
Murphy advanced to state
by taking second in the 100
backstroke (52.68), with a
nearly three-second drop
from his seed time.
Bozzi missed a state trip in
the 200 freestyle by 1/10th
of a second (second-place
1:44.42).
“The atmosphere on deck
for the team was incredible,”
Bozzi said. “There was a lot
more hype for this.”

Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Abi Baumgartner
Girls Gymnastics
Experienced unit
finishes seventh at state
Junior Abi Baumgartner is
a forward on the Lincoln-
Way Central girls basketball
team. Since Christmas, she
is averaging 16.0 points and
11.8 rebounds per game.
How did you get started
in basketball?
I started at a really young
age because my mom played
in college. So, she started me
and my sisters in the game at
like 3 or 4 years old.
What’s your favorite
aspect of the game?
I like defense more because
it’s more of a team
aspect and communicating.
And when you get stops,
steals or blocks, it just kind
of pumps you up more than
scoring, I think.
What’s your ideal postgame
meal?
I usually like coming
home and eating spaghetti,
just because I like my carbs.
If you won the lottery,
what’s the first thing
you’d buy?
I would probably help my
parents pay for all my college,
and put the rest into
savings and see where I
would need it in life.
Who has been your
inspiration in life?
I’d say my mom has always
been my inspiration
because when I’m down on
myself, she always seems to
keep me up. She always motivates
me and makes me get
out of my head, so I could
continue to push harder to
become better.
What’s one of your
favorite memories
playing basketball?
There’s been so many, but
I think my best memory was
in seventh-grade. I was on
the South Suburban Wildcats,
and we played up in
eighth-grade tournaments.
We went undefeated, except
losing five games the entire
summer. It was a really good
season.
What is the most
challenging part of the
sport?
I think it’s more of the
mental aspect, where if you
make a bad play or get frustrated,
you have to get out
of your own head and not
go down the wrong path
throughout the game. You
just got to keep yourself up
and your team motivated as
a leader.
If you could own any
exotic pet, what would
it be?
Probably a giraffe because
I’ve always found them so
interesting. It’s not something
you’d expect to see in
someone’s backyard every
day.
What life lessons could
you take away from
basketball?
The team aspect of working
together and communicating
with other people,
Photo submitted
I think it got me to come
out of my shell because I
was shy as a kid. Also, being
able to take over and
communicate your thoughts
through words and make
impulse decisions in game
help me think quick off my
feet.
If you could pick anyone
to play with you in
a 3-on-3 game, who
would it be?
I’d probably pick my
mom because she’s just so
quick. She could still almost
jump higher than me.
And then I’d pick my friend
Livvy Villa because we’ve
been playing with each other
since fourth-grade. She’s a
lifelong friend.
Interview by Editor T.J. Kremer,
III.
Chris Walker
Freelance Reporter
Teams usually have to be
at their best during their respective
sectional in order
to advance to the IHSA girls
gymnastics state finals.
That makes it a huge accomplishment
to be even
better at state.
Lincoln-Way co-op was
in that select company Saturday,
Feb. 17, in Palatine,
and other than runner-up
Prairie Ridge co-op, which
had won the previous three
state titles, Lincoln-Way
was the most improved
from sectional to state.
The team finished in seventh
place with 144.025
points after scoring a
143.2 in the Sandburg
Sectional for an increase
of 0.825.
It was fantastic finish for
a senior-laden team that
has been fortunate and talented
enough to compete
in the state finals for two
straight years after the program
hadn’t done so since
2008.
“It’s definitely been nice
and we’ve created a legacy
now,” senior Una Farrell
said. “We’ve been able to
build the team up to a dream
team and had a lot of accomplishments.”
Lincoln-Way came to the
state finals with a mathematical
chance of winning
the state title, but not much
more than that. It’s usually
how it goes for most
of the teams in the field
in gymnastics, especially
when you have a couple
teams consistently scoring
about five points higher
than you.
“Coming in we had the
lowest sectional score so
we had an idea where we
stood so we were hoping to
break that 145 overall,” Farrell
said. “I know especially
for me and the seniors that
our mindset was to have fun
and make some memories.
For most of us it was our
last meet and ends our high
school careers so we spent
a lot of time in the back
[warm-up] room thinking
about that.”
Glenbard West won its
first state title with a 150.05
ending runner-up Prairie
Ridge co-op’s three-year
title run.
Farrell and fellow seniors
Gabby DeVito, Erica Dice,
Madi Flondor, Jesse Smith
and Sabrina Wenk all competed
for the final time for
Lincoln-Way co-op.
Farrell was the team’s
lone all-around representative
who also qualified to
compete in the all-around
competition. She finished
in 21st place with a 36.2.
Just how young and talented
was the all-around
field this year? Farrell was
one of only three senior allarounders
to compete in the
state. Glenbard West junior
Maddie Diab won the allaround
for the second time,
scoring a 38.025.
Flondor competed in
three events, scoring a 9.1
on vault, 9.05 on beam and
8.675 on bars.
The team’s remaining
seniors were single-event
specialists. Dice had the
a 9.375 on vault, Gabby
DeVito earned an 8.85 on
vault, Wenk had an 8.275
on bars and Smith did not
compete.
Freshman Grace Kmak
saw action in all four events
with a 9.175 on floor, 9.075
on vault, 9.1 on beam and
8.25 on bars. Sophomore
Korina Jarosz was most impressive
on vault with a 9.5,
but also had a 9.15 on floor
and 9.05 on bars. Fellow
sophomores Erika Waaso
and Allie Reis also got involved.
Reis had a 9.125 on
floor and Waaso earned an
8.25 on beam.
“We all tried to go in
there and hit our routines
and do the best that we
could,” Jarosz said. “We
knew the judging was going
to be tight so we tried to be
as clean as possible on our
routines and go out there
and have fun.”
The team’s score of
37.225 on vault was one of
the highlights.
“It’s been a favorite event
all year and we had one
of our highest all-around
scores,” Jarosz said. “That
was a lot of fun and we
were able to think about
the seniors. They’ve kind
of carried most of the
team so with them leaving
we wanted to finish
strong.”
The 2018-19 team will
certainly have a different
look with six seniors graduating,
but knows what newcomers
will step and make
an impact, especially with
the sport loaded state-wide
with talented underclassmen.
In related team news, the
Illinois High School Girls
Gymnastics Association
awarded Assistant Coach
of the Year to Lincoln-Way
co-op assistant coach Kory
Thompson for the second
consecutive season.

LW East’s O’Rourke takes fifth at state
Steve Millar
Freelance Reporter
Lincoln-Way East senior
Devin O’Rourke made the
final match of his wrestling
career a memorable one,
pinning Plainfield East’s
Artese Gregory to finish
fifth at heavyweight.
While most people know
O’Rourke as a football
player – he’ll continue his
football career at Northwestern
– he’s wrestled
since he was 5 years old and
was in tears following the
fifth-place match.
“I’ve been wrestling for a
long time, so this was emotional,”
he said. “It wasn’t
a perfect tournament, but
I’m glad I finished it the
right way. That meant a lot
to me.”
East coach Tyrone
Byrd said O’Rourke’s
passion for wrestling is
apparent.
“He’s sad that he’s going
to be done with the sport,
but he should also be happy
and proud with all he’s been
able to accomplish,” Byrd
said. “He’s a warrior. He
dislocated a finger in two
places at regionals and has
basically been wrestling
with one hand since, and he
was still able to finish fifth
at state.”
After pinning Taft’s Piotr
Krumpa in his opening
match, O’Rourke (30-5)
was hurt by a tough draw,
as he ran into Hononegah’s
Anthony Cassioppi in
the quarterfinals and was
pinned.
Cassioppi, ranked No. 4
in the nation, went on to win
the state title and complete
his undefeated season.
O’Rourke, meanwhile,
rebounded in wrestlebacks
by pinning Aurora East’s
Ulises Apantenco and beating
Montini’s Mike Mc-
Nicholas 7-0.
After falling 1-0 in overtime
to St. Charles East’s
Justin Hall, O’Rourke
bounced back to win the
fifth-place match.
“I don’t know if I’d be
able to live with myself if
I didn’t finish it the right
away,” O’Rourke said. “At
least getting that pin, I can
be happy with how it ended.”
Junior 182-pounder Nick
Mihajlovic went 1-2 to finish
a 31-5 season.
Mihajlovic beat Glenbard
North’s Anthony Pennington
7-0 in the opening
round, but was pinned in his
next two matches.
Nonetheless, Byrd is excited
about Mihajlovic’s future
chances.
“Nick is a talented kid,”
Byrd said. “He’s disappointed
now, but the good
news is we’re already
talking about next season
and some things to
change.
“He’s a kid who’s looking
at the top of the podium next
year as a goal. Some people
might think that’s crazy, but
Nick and the coaches in our
program think it’s possible
and we’re going to go after
that goal.”
The state meet capped a
successful season for East,
highlighted by a dual win
over Lockport, a tournament
title at the Niles West
Invitational, and runner-up
finishes in the SouthWest
Suburban tournament and
The Griffins’ Devin O`Rourke is shown after the Saturday, Feb. 17 place match at the IHSA
Individual Wrestling State Final.
“I’m extremely proud of
this team,” Byrd said. “This
has probably been my most
fun team to coach. Our guys
might not be the most talented
wrestlers, but they’re
great athletes who learned
how to wrestle. Their hearts
are huge. They try and try
again.”

“I honestly couldn’t ask
for anything more for my last
year here,” Smith added. “I
couldn’t be happier.”
East’s 298 points topped
runner-up Lincoln-Way Central
(252) for the sectional
team title, aided by many
other great swims.
The Griffins now must
shift focus to the next test: the
main stage of the state meet.
Meanwhile, Lincoln-Way
Central’s Tim Murphy and
Danny O’Brien earned return
trips to state at the sectional
meet.
Under the pressure of sectionals,
Lincoln-Way East
turned in an unforgettable
performance for the record
books Saturday, Feb. 17.
How unforgettable? A vivid
reminder of the effort will
be within daily view at the
Frankfort school for a while.
The host Griffins set new pool
records in the 200-yard medley
relay (1:34.39), the 400
freestyle relay (3:11.70), and
individually by Mason Rhode
in the 200 IM (1:53.50) and
Bryce Wyma in both the 50
freestyle (20.92) and the 100
backstroke (51.41).
In all, five of the 12 varsity
pool records are now held by
2018 swimmers. And with
additional state-qualifying
event wins by senior Dante
Smith (59.26 in the 100
breaststroke), Rhode (50.31
in the 100 butterfly) and Kellen
Bachler (47.59 in the 100
freestyle), it was a sectional
championship effort that
would be tough to top in program
history.
“We all had the goal coming
out of breaking a lot of records,”
said Bachler, a senior
who was on the two record
relays and also advanced to
state with his second-place
Lincoln-Way East senior Kellen Bachler qualifies Saturday, Feb. 17, for an individual spot (47.59 in the 100 freestyle) at the
state championships. The Griffins set five new records during the sectional meet. 22nd century media file photo
21.79 in the 50 freestyle.
“I’m just really proud of everybody.
It’s a great group of
guys.”
The greatest of the elite
group at sectionals was junior
Wyma. Swimming four
events — two individual, two
relays — he was part of pool
records in all four.
“I’ve been smiling all day
since the first relay record,”
Wyma said. “We all went out
there and swam our races.”
That first relay record
Wyma mentioned was the
200 medley that shattered a
pool record set in 2007.
Smith, Rhode and Bachler
joined Wyma on the 200
medley to open the meet,
then Wyma, Rhode, Colin
Brady and Bachler bookended
the record day with a new
pool mark in the 400 free relay
to end the meet.
Sophomore Rhode set the
new 200 IM record by 3.46
seconds, then his 100 butterfly
just missed the nine-yearold
pool record of 50.27 in
that event.
“My 100 fly I missed the
pool record by .04 [seconds],
so that was a little disappointing,
although I was still very
happy,” Rhode said. “Next
week at state I’m going to try
to get that down towards 49
(seconds).”
The dream sectional was
an especially exciting day for
senior Smith, whose season
of incredible improvement
ends with swims in two state
events.
“Last year I wasn’t even
on the sectional team, and it
(state) has happened in my
last chance,” Smith said.
“To go straight from not
even making the sectional
team to now going to state
feels great, and our 200 medley
relay set the tone early in
the meet. The time we went
is competitive throughout the
entire state. I feel we have a
good chance to go to (state)
finals.
