The premier said the constitution
defines the ambit of institutions and that
whenever there was confrontation
among institutions, it harmed the country.
Addressing the assembly after the
contempt of court case.
A three-member bench
headed by Justice Sheikh
clippings dated 9th
of June-2017, 15th and
31st of Dec-2017.
It is pertinent here to
mention that country’s top
court, in separate hearing,
has also rejected Pakistan
Muslim League Nawaz’s
(PMLN) leader and State
Minister Talal Chaudhry’s
plea to adjourn hearing for
The apex court has also
Troops being sent to KSA only
1600 Pakistani soldiers in Saudi Arabia, approval given
to send another 1000 says Khurram
ISLAMABAD:Defence
Minister Khurram Dastgir
stirred a debate in Senate on
Monday as he refused to
reveal the etails of the troops
deployed in Saudi Arabia.
“We cannot share operational
details of troops
deployment [in Saudi
Arabia],” Dastagir said during
a session of the
Parliament’s Upper House
on Monday.
When the Senate chairman
Raza Rabbani asked if
the details can be revealed
during an in-camera session,”
the minister said.
“Even in an in-camera session,
we’d request not to be
asked questions on the exact
deployment as this is an
issue relating with the
national security and that of
the troops.”
LAHORE: The head of
ruling party PML-N Nawaz
Sharif reiterated his claim of
victory in next general election,
which will be held in
2018, with majority and said
PML-N has fulfilled what
the claims had made in last
election.
He made these views
while presiding over party
crucial meeting at his residence
in Jati Umra, Lahore,
Rabbani further said that
in addition to 1,600 troops
who have been deployed,
1,000 more will be joining
them. “These troops will be
deployed within the boundaries
of Saudi Arabia.”
Dastagir once again
refused to reveal details
when Senator Farhatullah
Babar asked if the troops are
going to be deployed in
Sharora, which is a town
bordering Yemen.
The minister also said
the troops are being
deployed as part of an
agreement with Saudi
Arabia in 1992.
To a question, Dastagir
said the information was
privy to himself and the
prime minister for past several
months, saying the
“troops were deployed
only after the approval by
the latter.”
Rabbani responded, saying,
“Let us not talk about
the Parliament’s supremacy
then,” and added, “you are
rubbing the nose of the
Parliament in sand.”
He went on to add, “Why
shouldn’t the proceedings of
Senate’s contempt initiated
against you and the prime
minister for not taking the
Parliament in confidence.”
Pakistan has stayed away
from the conflict in Yemen
where Iran strongly opposes
the involvement of the
Saudi-led military coalition.
chief General Qamar Javed
he met top Iranian civil and
Nurses beat up doctor in
Mirpur Khas over alleged harassment Staff
MIRPUR KHAS: A group of
nurses beat up a doctor at Civil
Hospital Mirpur Khas on Monday,
alleging that he subjected them to
sexual harassment.
Police had to be summoned to
the hospital as the situation turned
ugly and the paramedic staff had
to intervene to rescue the injured
doctor from the enraged group.
Sobbing hysterically, a nurse
claimed the doctor in question had
been sexually harassing her and
others in the operation theatre for
a week. The doctor, however, said
he had only stopped the nurses
from “doing makeup” in the operation
theatre, after which they
“attacked” him.
The hospital administration has
constituted a three-member
HYDERABAD: The
water commission formed
by Supreme Court has
ordered public health engineering
department to
maintain water supply
projects constructed by it..
“No further orders on
that score are required,” the
commission’s head, Justice
(retd) Amir Hani Muslim,
stated in the eight-page
order.
He noted that during his
visits to several districts of
Sindh, many projects completed
by the public health
engineering department
appeared inoperative due to
the row over maintenance
between the two departments.
“The SC has clarified
that the executing
department shall maintain
the schemes on completion.”
STANDING
The public health engineering
department
informed the commission
inquiry committee to probe the
matter.
In the aftermath of the incident,
it came to light that the doctor had
been accused of and subsequently
found guilty of sexual harassment
in the past as well.
during a January 20 hearing
that some 800 water supply
schemes built by the department
in Sindh are not functional
due to controversy
over maintenance.
Justice (retd) Muslim
directed Chief Secretary
Rizwan Memon to make all
the schemes completed by
the department operational
within a week.
“The department will be
entitled to operation and
maintenance with additional
manpower to be provided
by the Sindh government.”
The chief secretary assured
that the departmental promotion
committee will
meet soon and posting
orders against the vacant
posts in the department will
be issued by February 20.
The commission noted
was given by the local government
secretary that the
employees of Wasa would
be disbursed salaries and
pension within a week, but
this has yet to be done.”
“In the given circumstance…the
[Sindh] finance
department is directed to
adjust salary and pension of
the employees at source by
adjusting the outstanding
[amount payable to the
government departments,”
the commission ordered.
The provincial government
will have to directly deposit
the salary and pension in
the employees’ bank
accounts instead of handing
Hospital documents show that
Justice (retd) Muslim
extended a similar order for
paying salaries and pensions
to regular and contractual
staff of the municipal
bodies directly into their
will keep vigilance on
Besides this, they will be
made accountable for the
amounts which they receive
beyond salaries and pension,”
Justice (retd) Muslim
observed while pointing out
that the municipal and town
“There are instances when
By Audrey Azoulay
Last week, the world made a great commitment
to rebuild Iraq following the recent defeat of Daesh.
Recognising the immense courage of the Iraqi people
and the depth of their suffering, the Kuwait
International Conference for the Reconstruction of
Iraq pledged to rebuild infrastructure so that the
country can once again prosper.
Mosul is the living symbol of Iraqi's pluralistic
identity. For centuries, it was at the crossroad of culture
in the Middle East. From the Sumerian cities to
Babylon, from the walls of Nineveh to the Silk
Road, the region has been a melting pot of people
and ideas. For the last three years, this story of
peace - the true spirit of Mosul - has been overshadowed
by another story of hatred and violence.
The conference stressed the importance of putting
the human dimension at the heart of our efforts
for sustainable reconstruction. So we launched
"Revive the Spirit of Mosul", an initiative for the
reconstruction of the Old City, both its physical
infrastructure and restoring the dignity of its people.
When war is waged against culture and education,
response must be culture and education. This is the
only solution against extremism.
The destruction of the University of Mosul
Library, the dynamiting of the Al Hadba minaret
and the pillaging of the Nabi Yunus Shrine, emblem
of the religious coexistence of the three religions of
the Book - shocked the world. Public libraries were
burnt, music was silenced, artists attacked and cafes
closed.
Thousands of children have learned war and
been indoctrinated with an intellectually corrupt
ideology. They have not received an education - the
essential tool for building the future. To avoid raising
a lost generation, we must teach peace but also
reinfuse these communities with the culture of
peace, steeped in Iraq's rich history and cultural
life.
The revival of the Old City of Mosul is the cornerstone
of our initiative, supported by both UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Iraqi
A Beginning Towards The End?
DOWNING a regime's war planes may well signal
a strong probability of downing that
regime too. Al-Qaida affiliated terrorists'
recent downing of Syrian bomber may signal the end of
Damascus winning many battles and surviving a five
year long terrorism of a hundred thousand foreign
trained alien terrorists from hundred countries.
REBELS used to capture a battleground but could
hold on to an area until Syrian government's war planes
bombed and forced them to withdraw or flee to another
area. This went on for quite some years. It was clear
that elected President Asad was winning a foreign
imposed militancy and terrorism mostly due to superior
war position of Damascus air power which the rebels
did not have. If they had anti aircraft guns, rockets and
missiles, they could shift the tide of war to the favor of
many so called "Islamic terrorists" including chiefly
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS or IS). Big powers
behind Mideastern Sunni majority kingdoms and
shaikhdoms who wanted to topple Shia Asad regime
SAUDI Arabia just did that, according to international
reports, which was of course like usual against
often repeated claims for years by Riyadh and allies
that they (officially) disapprove of terrorism in Syria,
but this action of supplying arms and equipment to
even mostly foreign non-Syrian terrorists to shoot
down Syrian state warplanes sufficiently proved that
(privately) Mideast rulers and shaikhdoms were supporting
and indirectly fighting a continued five-year
long terrorism and supplied anti aircraft weapons to
serve ongoing terrorism, as news had it a couple of
weeks ago, and now a turning point may be ahead with
a challenge to superiority of Syria in air power.
WELL-KNOWN were lies of war mongering leaders
who talked of peace but continued their military
adventures here, there and everywhere, thanks to
advanced electronic media and more freedom enjoyed
by non-state media who spread some truths not carried
by enslaved media controlled by governments or by
media controlled by financial or institutional empires.
LOSS in standing and credibility was thus suffered
mostly by United Nations Organization (UN) reduced
to issuing war permits and sending UN peace keepers
to safeguard invading armies. Disgrace in reputation of
fairplay was a loss of big powers and their lackey
regimes abroad who trampled upon international laws
of sovereignty of nations and interfered into purely
internal affairs of other countries. The UN, US,
European Union and Muslim world, especially most of
those Saudi led OIC members in Mideast may topple
some leaders with or without war or talks and usurp
some territories or rich resources of some countries.
But this is a small gain compared to their losing that
more valuable and more precious trust of nations
worldwide. Perhaps a world conquest ambition has
gotten the better of any and all human values and rights
publicized so much but seldom acted upon by international
power players on world chessboard of politics
where bought off the shelf leaders and illiteracy ridden
but rich resource countries are no more than pawns.
UNDERSTOOD is a coming big bang and change
in war with fighting strategy moved in favor of terrorists
and terrorism as Syrian war planes who used to
bomb and liberate areas usurped will not be able to do
so anymore when they're shot down. This rephrased
means foreign rebels, a million from 100 countries
according to Syrian leaders, will remain in command of
their "conquered" areas as if they're just up for grabs on
a disgraceful "might is right" law of jungle with wild
animals without any established rights other than inhuman
force.
FORECAST and warnings since many years to stop
infiltration of terrorists from Turkey and other countries
into Syria went unheeded by those mentioned warring
powers who have made Syria and Syrians a laboratory
of their alien frankensteinish adventures. Syria's case
may become much like Libya which was reduced from
best before war to worst after war. No one seems to
care now for rights of Libya and Libyans after foreign
war mongers got what they wanted of what some
Muslim world analysts perhaps rightly describe as a
wrongly victimized Qadhafi regime and his country
where Libya and Libyans have become lawless and
reckless in anarchy now and no one is ensuring rights
of neither Libya nor Libyans who have reportedly lost
a heaven and now live under a hell after war. Another
caution thrown to the wind and not cared for was to
stop Syrian war from spreading further with terror acts
extended up to Turkey, which prolonged and supported
terror and terrorism, and to Lebanon as Hezbollah and
Asad are being targeted for their being of minority
Muslim Shia sect in a war of big powers' divide and
rule policy and majority of other Muslim population.
Another report attributed to among most credible military
news media spoke of late about thousands of tons
of arms and ammunitions being shipped to Mideast and
destined for war. Mideast official alliance of war mongers
-- and they probably falsely make themselves
believe as if they're a defense coalition -- may do well
to limit this war against destruction of Syria and killing
of Syrian nation as this victimized country is all but
destroyed of its infra-structure with millions killed,
injured and homeless men, women and children living
in worst conditions within and outside Syria.
Likelihood of this war extending to regional scale does
exist and not driving this foreign invasion up to that
extent of destruction of many nations to fulfill antinations
whims and pleasures of kings on chessboard to
destroy Islamic bloc is advisable, since world may not
care for Syria becoming as worse, lawless and anarchic
as Libya for whose rights foreign warriors and invaders
were advocating but not caring for anything now.
Muslim world can avoid a continued destruction of
Muslim world, bit by bit, country by country.
Finally, Iraq gets a fresh start with global aid
Mosul is the living symbol of Iraqi's pluralistic identity. For centuries, it
was at the crossroad of culture in the Middle East
Prime Minister, Haider Al Abadi. This initiative
means restoring architectural symbols that bring
the Iraqi people together, in all its diversity. Many
key actors like the European Union, neighboring
countries and international organisations expressed
great interest in participating in this effort that
Unesco will coordinate.
Unesco will bring its expertise in damage
assessment to restore and reconstruct the emblematic
sites of the historic centre. We will work handin-hand
with the local population and the government
to restore bookshops, cultural centres and
museums - including the Museum of Mosul, which
was tragically ransacked.
We will provide opportunities for technical and
vocational training, particularly in traditional
building techniques, so that Iraqis will have the
skills to actively contribute to this reconstruction.
The great civilisations of this region defined the
course of humanity, through a thousand-year dialogue,
which gave birth to the wheel, writing,
mathematics and law. We will work with our Iraqi
counterparts to ensure future generations will learn
of their proud heritage, through the school materials
that we are developing, including a new school
curriculum, which puts humanities at its core along
creativity, critical thinking and values of respect.
This is the only way to ensure that fanaticism does
not prevail once more.
This "Revive the Spirit of Mosul" initiative will
be Unesco's main contribution to the United
Nations' Response and Resilience programme
designed to help Iraq's government fast-track the
social dimensions of reconstruction.
Later this year, we will organise an international
conference at Unesco Headquarters, with the
Iraqi government and all our partners, to design a
blueprint for this reconstruction.
Through culture and education, we can restore
trust and create the conditions for a common future.
This reconstruction will take time but, brick-bybrick,
lesson-by-lesson, together we can revive the
true spirit of Mosul. -Asharq Al Awsat
Iran continues search to find debris
of ATR plane: Emergency official
YASSOUJ: Rescue
teams started the second
day of searching for the
remains of the ATR plane
which crashed in Iran's
central west region on Feb
18, head of emergency center
in this southwestern
Iranian city announced on
Monday.
'There is still no sign of
the plane,' Jalal Pouranfard
told the Islamic Republic
News Agency (IRNA).
Despite the ten-hour
effort yesterday to search
for the crashed plane which
departed Tehran for
Yassouj on Sunday morning,
still nothing is found,
Pouranfard said.
The official added 40
ambulances and 45 search
and rescue teams are present
in the scene where is
reportedly the plce where
the crash occurred.
Today, the official said,
drones and helicopters will
be used in the operations if
the weather is fine.
In a related development,
another provincial
official told IRNA that two
aid helicopters have been
sent from Kohkilouyeh-
Boyer Ahmand Province to
the scene to find the passengers
and crew who may
be killed after the crash.
Head of the Red Cross
in this province, too, said
Monday that an expert
team from Mountain
Rescue has been dispatched
by chopper to the
likely scene of the crash.
But, Amanollah
Jahanbin added, the
research operation has been
unsuccessful up to now.
Also, spokesman for
Iran Emergency Center
announced today that
Iranian Army is to send a
helicopter to the mountainous
region to continue the
search operation.
U.S. charges Russians with 2016 U.S.
election tampering to boost Trump
WASHINGTON: A
Russian propaganda arm
oversaw a criminal and
espionage conspiracy to
tamper in the 2016 U.S.
presidential campaign to
support Donald Trump
and disparage Hillary
Clinton, said an indictment
released on Friday
that revealed more details
than previously known
about Moscow’s purported
effort to interfere.
The office of U.S.
Special Counsel Robert
Mueller charged 13
Russians and three
Russian companies,
including St. Petersburgbased
Internet Research
Agency known for its
trolling on social media.
The official who oversees
Mueller’s work said the
investigation was not finished.
The court document
said those accused “had a
strategic goal to sow discord
in the U.S. political
system, including the 2016
U.S. presidential election.”
The indictment said
Russians adopted false
online personas to push
divisive messages; traveled
to the United States to
collect intelligence, visiting
10 states; and staged
political rallies while posing
as Americans.
In one case, it said, the
Representatives from
Bangladesh and Myanmar
will meet on Tuesday to discuss
the repatriation to
Myanmar of more than
6,500 Rohingya Muslims
trapped on a strip of
unclaimed land between the
two countries, Bangladeshi
officials said.
“It is about taking them
back to Myanmar,” Relief
and Refugee Repatriation
Commissioner Mohammad
Abul Kalam, told Reuters
on Monday. “They are on
the zero line and actually on
the Myanmar side.”
However, several officials
contacted in neighboring
Myanmar said they were
not aware of plans for a
meeting, which Kalam said
would take place on the
“zero line” near a place
called Gundum.
A spokeswoman for the
United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR), which will not
be involved in the talks, said
the agency was concerned
the Rohingya may be
forcibly returned to
Myanmar without due consideration
for their safety.
Nearly 700,000
Rohingya have fled
Myanmar’s Rakhine state
Minister Sergei Lavrov to
exchange views and discuss
difficult issues we all face at
this critical juncture in West
Asia. In the fight against
extremism and dealing with
the complex military and
political environment in our
wider region, our growing,
strategic partnership with
the Russian Federation,
which stems from our common
principles, interests
and concerns, has been an
important contributor to
regional situation.
Poland spares forest
to win EU favor, but
damage already done
BIALOWIEZA, Poland:
When Poland sought to ease
tensions with the European
Union by declaring a halt to
logging in the ancient
Bialowieza forest, it did not
announce how many trees it
had already cut down.
In fact, logging quotas to
2021 had already been
reached and in one part of the
forest an expanded quota,
declared illegal by the
European Commission, had
been more than half fulfilled
despite an injunction, official
forestry data shows.
State Forests, the staterun
body in charge of harvesting
timber and protecting
woodland, also confirmed
that the forest’s two remaining
administrative units were
aiming to increase the quota
of wood that they can harvest
by 2021.
The woodland, a
UNESCO World Heritage
site that is home to the largest
roaming population of
European bison and some of
the continent’s oldest trees, is
emblematic of the rift
To review the crashed
plane case, Iranian
Minister of Road and
Also, Head of Iran's
Civil
Aviation
office Reza
Jafarzadeh told IRNA on
Monday that a seven-member
delegation from France
is to arrive in Tehran
tonight to examine the reason
behind the crash of the
ATR passenger plane.
The Asseman Airlines'
passenger plane crashed in
the Kohangan Village near
the Padena region, 120 Km
from Semirom in Isfahan
Province, center of Iran.
The debris of the plane has
not been found yet, but all
the 66 passengers and crew
of it are reportedly killed.
the northern Iraqi city of
Kirkuk late on Sunday,
killing at least 25 of them,
police and militia commanders
said on Monday.
Police and militia commanders
militia fighters were killed
in the ambush and at least
10 were missing, but security
forces later found
another 13 bodies dumped
nearby with multiple gunshot
Islamic State claimed
responsibility for the attack.
A security official said
Iraqi security forces were
pursuing the Islamic State
militants who disguised
themselves in police uniforms
to carry out the
Iraqi forces launched an
Bangladesh security
forces have been instructed
not to let these Rohingya
MANILA: Philippine senators
began a public inquiry
on Monday into the $300 million
purchase of two navy
President Rodrigo Duterte’s
closest aide had interfered in
the procurement process.
The inquiry was prompted
by media reports that carried
a leaked document with
OSLO: Norwegian billionaire
Aker Energy plans “significant”
Aker Energy said the
Aker (AKER.OL),
Roekke’s main listed
MELBOURNE: The National
1000 jobs - the first of 6000 positions to
go over the next three years. The bank
yesterday confirmed the cuts were beginning.
"The proposed new structure will
NAB last year announced it planned to
save $1 billion by 2020 through automation.
The announcement was made at the
The rise of on-line banking means
branches are considered most likely to
bear the brunt of cuts, as well as middlemanagement.
One thousand job cuts will
be announced each half of the year for the
next three years.
However, the bank is also in the
process of hiring 2000 more staff with
staff will be offered the chance to apply
for transition training to other roles, or
redundancy.
Tens of thousands of jobs in the banking
sector are considered vulnerable in
the next few years.
Australia, US, India and Japan in talks
to counter China’s spreading influence
SYDNEY: Australia, the
United States, India and
Japan are talking about
establishing a joint regional
infrastructure scheme as an
alternative to China’s multibillion-dollar
Belt and Road
Initiative in an attempt to
counter Beijing’s spreading
influence, the Australian
Financial Review reported
on Monday, citing a senior
U.S. official.
The unnamed official
was quoted as saying the
plan involving the four
regional partners was still”
nascent “and won’t be ripe
enough to be announced’
during Australian Prime
Minister Turnbull’s visit to
the United States later this
week.”
The official said, however,
that the project was on
the agenda for Turnbull’s
talks with U.S. President
Donald Trump during that
trip and was being seriously
discussed. The source
added that the preferred terminology
was to call the
plan an “alternative” to
China’s Belt and Road
Initiative, rather than a
“rival.”
“No one is saying China
should not build infrastructure,”
the official was quoted
as saying. “China might
build a port which, on its
own is not economically
viable. We could make it
economically viable by
building a road or rail line
linking that port.”
Representatives for
Turnbull, Foreign Minister
Julie Bishop and Trade
Minister Steven Ciobo did
not immediately respond to
requests for comment.
Japanese Chief Cabinet
Secretary Yoshihide Suga,
asked at a news conference
about the report of fourway
cooperation, said
Japan, the United States,
Australia and India regularly
exchange views on
issues of common interest.
“It is not the case that
this is to counter China’s
Belt and Road,” he said.
Imran Khan’s wife to stay away from politics
ISLAMABAD: PTI
chief Imran Khan's new
wife has decided to stay
away from politics and will
not take part in PTI meetings
or rallies.
According to details
revealed by sources from
within the party, Bushra
Bibi's children will stay
with their father while she
takes up residence at Bani
Gala with the cricketerturned-politician.
Bushra Bibi will continue
to remain at Bani Gala
and will live a private life
away from the public glare.
Former PTI General
Secretary Jahangir Tareen
said that Imran Khan's decision
to marry was a private
affair and wished the couple
a happy life. "I would
advise opponents not to
indulge in politics when it
comes to Khan's marriage,"
said Tareen. Jahangir
Tareen also refuted claims
made by a journalist that
Imran Khan's marriage had
taken place earlier. The senior
PTI leader said that
Imran had married on
Sunday evening and said
that it was really unfortunate
that some people were
criticising Imran on an issue
that was entirely personal.
Meanwhile, senior PTI
leader Naeem Bokhari
reacted to the marriage by
stating that love was not
bound by virus.
Rumours finally died
down about the third wedding
of Pakistan Tehreek-e-
Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran
Khan on Sunday as the
party confirmed that the
PTI chief had married
political, economic, trade
and investment, defense,
education and cultural
fields,” the statement added.
The Foreign Office said
MUMBAI: After
showing off her caliber in
two of her home production
‘NH10’ and
‘Phillauri’, Anushka
Sharma is back with her
third venture ‘Pari’.
Her character and look
in this upcoming horror
film has had audience
hooked
in
anticipation.Although not
much is known about her
character in the film and
the storyline, if the trailer
and screamers are anything
to go by, Anushka
seems to be playing a double
role in the film.
While we wait with
bated breath to find that
out, we managed to get
some details about her
character and her look.
Speaking about the same,
British Prosthetic designer
Clover Woottoon stated,
“There are many shades to
Anushka’s character in
‘Pari’.
But, most importantly,
we wanted people to forget
Anushka the person,
Balkh and think about Rukhsana
(her character) alone.
Anushka being a strikingly
pretty face, we didn’t
do too much with her.
We just made her eyebrows
bushier, added
lenses and darkened the
under eyes so that she
looked more tired. We
blurred the edge of her
lips so that it looks drier
years were a manifestation
of mutual desire for translating
political goodwill
into a substantive and multidimensional
partnership,
it added.
Pakistan and Russia are
also celebrating the 70th
anniversary of establishment
of diplomatic relations
this year. The two
ministers had earlier met
on the sidelines of the
United Nations General
Assembly session in New
York in September 2017.
Anushka Sharma is back
with her third venture ‘Pari’
Those who participated
in the gathering held a
Kacheri (discussion) on the
issues of love, peace fraternal
sentiments, civilization,
and cultural heritage of the
land of Sindh. People sang
songs on the same issues.
Speakers said on the
occasion that anniversary
of Sehwan bomb blast had
become a driving force,
which made people from
all over the country to
assemble at the shrine to
spread the message of love
and peace for all.
They said that followers
and devotees who used to
visit the Shrine didn’t
belong to any specific religion
or sect as they all stood
for harmony, peace, and tolerance,
in the society.
They said the assembly
of such a large number
from people showed well
that they would steadfastly
resist any move to attack
the rich and centuries-old
culture of shrines, saints,
and their devotees in Sindh.
A large number of people
especially attended the
gathering from Karachi.
Those who took part in the
and that is literally all that
we did. Depending on the
scene requirements we
made her cheeks a little
pinker but that’s about
it…nothing more was
done and yet, she looked
so different!”
