SUSPENSION TRAUMA 101
Prompt rescue is critical in the event of fall. In just
minutes, suspension trauma can set in and cause
serious, potentially fatal damage. It’s caused when
the leg straps of a harness put pressure on the
femoral artery, which causes blood to pool in the
legs. This can deprive the brain, kidneys, and other
vital organs of oxygen. As the blood sits uncirculated,
it becomes toxic and highly acidic. Once pressure is
released, that large amount of stagnant blood can
rush back to the heart quickly and cause cardiac
arrest. Suspension trauma straps (See page 29) are
a simple accessory to help relieve pressure off of the
harness leg straps.
