MIF II provides a new level of protection for distribution feeders
The MIF II provides digital feeder protection and breaker control in an economical package
June 2, 2003, Markham, Ontario – The MIF II is the first product
in the new MII family of economical and highly functional digital
relays from GE Multilin. The MIF II provides comprehensive
distribution feeder protection at any voltage level, and can also
be used for backup protection for transformers, busbars,
generators and large motors. In addition to feeder protection, the
MIF II also provides integrated breaker control (open/close) and
recloser functions. To complement its protection and control
features, the relay’s user-friendly controls and plug and play
setup software make this product very easy to configure and use.
The MIF II offers complete feeder protection including time delayed and instantaneous
overcurrent with two setting levels (high and low), as well as thermal image protection. The relay
also incorporates a special sensitive ground range to provide high impedance fault protection,
and features options such as cold load pickup, breaker failure protection, a breaker diagnostic
monitor, configurable logic, oscillography record and a four-shot recloser. The relay includes a
library of configurable I/O functions to simplify setup, as well as flexible settings, and a choice of
ANSI, IEC or user configurable overcurrent curves.
The product’s design incorporates many features that simplify setup and maintenance. To
facilitate wiring, the MIF II is fitted with large connection terminals to meet North American and
International standards. In addition, its modular internal architecture provides convenient access
for customers to upgrade their circuit boards. The MIF II is also an ideal size for limited space
applications such as panels, and it can be used to replace existing M family relays.
The MIF II was designed with a user-friendly interface that provides convenient access to vital
information. Using the unit’s password protected local keypad, authorized users can quickly view

device data or perform breaker control functions. To view information, the MIF II’s large display
and LEDs provide users with relay data such as metered parameters and alarm conditions, and
are easy to read from a distance. Customers can also access data and event records on the MIF
II by connecting a PC. The front RS232 port provides local PC access while the rear RS485 port
can be used for remote communications. The MIF II supports industry standard ModBus
communications protocol, providing easy integration with control systems.
The MIF II ships with enerVista v3.0, a suite of software products
for managing the entire lifecycle implementation of GE Multilin
IEDs. enerVista makes setting up and configuring the MIF II easier
and faster than ever before. enerVista provides comprehensive
tools to help the user setup, manage, maintain and update their MIF
II or any other GE Multilin IED. Users benefit from the variety of

IEDs. enerVista also includes software that allows customers to perform oscillography and data
analysis to troubleshoot fault conditions.
