Center for Student Careers & Employment The Center for Student Careers and Employment (CSCE) assists with all phases of the career development process. Students that are unsure of their target career are encouraged to visit the CSCE to take an online career assessment. The CSCE also provides one-on-one resume reviews, special topic workshops, mock interviews, job postings, co-curricular transcripts, job fairs, Career Check, computer lab access and many other job-search resources. The CSCE isn’t your last stop in your educational experience; we’re here to help you each step of the way. Dining Services Mary’s Kitchen, in the lower level of the Student Center, features soups, sandwiches, fresh salads, snack bar and hot entrées. Stop by for a meal or a snack from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays. Refreshments are also available from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday in Café Belay, located in the Health and Human Performance Center. Catering services are also available. Health and Human Performance Center The Health and Human Performance Center (HHPC) includes a fitness conditioning center, assessment lab, gymnasium, indoor track, group exercise program, dance classes, locker rooms, indoor climbing facility and outdoor equipment rental center. At the HHPC there is something for everyone, no matter what your current fitness level may be. Intramural Sports The Intramural Sports Program offers an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to participate in a variety of sport activities. The program is offered at no cost to the participants, and those participating may enter as many, or few, activities as are provided during the spring and fall semesters. Every level of player may participate in the program. The Intramural Sports program allows participants to become active in a variety of sports activities, have fun with friends, meet new people and enjoy one of the many opportunities offered by San Juan College. Library Special collections include the Southwest Room, for regional information and resources, and The Carter Room, for earth science and geologic materials. The Library houses 88,000 volumes, with an additional 18,000 electronic books and more than 60 research databases. The Library offers interlibrary loan - a service that allows students, faculty and staff to borrow books and journal articles from other libraries throughout the U.S. Reference librarians are available during all regular Library hours to assist patrons with research and other informational needs. A self-check system is available for students, staff and faculty to use with a valid College I.D. The Law Library is located adjacent to the student study area. Please ask at the circulation desk in the main library for access to the law collection. Ash St., which also houses San Juan College East, the Aztec Boys & Girls Club, and Vista Nueva High School. In addition to general reference materials and periodicals, it houses a children’s collection in the Reading Enrichment Room. Learning Communities Make a Connection! As a student at SJC, you have an opportunity to enhance your learning experience by enrolling in pairs of classes called learning communities. You will join a group of other students who will take these two courses together, which are often organized around a common theme. You can learn to build connections between subjects and with fellow students. Instructors of the two courses work together to connect content, activities, and assignments. Listed as LCOM courses, learning communities can be identified in the <strong>Schedule</strong> of Courses under both subject areas or in the section labeled Learning Communities. These two classes are co-requisites, so you have to enroll in both to be in the learning community. Native American Center Native American students are encouraged to visit the Native American Center in room 1610. The NAC staff coordinates with tribal financial aid package for students and offers assistance in admission procedures; personal, academic, and vocational advisement; employment opportunities; and adjustment to academic life at San Juan College. The NAC promotes culture enrichment activities on and off campus including the annual San Juan College Pow Wow and serves as a liaison for the college to Native American communities and educational organizations. Herencia Latina Center The Herencia Latina Center serves to provide academic, financial, and career advisement for students at San Juan College. The Center provides a culturally supportive environment and works to promote activities and events to enhance this for the College and community. The Center serves in assisting the recruitment of students to San Juan College and works with existing programs in that regard. It also serves as a supportive area for students in their studies, course discussion, networking, and informational sessions. The Center works to provide links to the local community and educational pipeline to the College from other programs including ENLACE. New Mexico General Education Common Core In accordance with policies established by the NM Higher Education Department, designated general education courses successfully completed at any regionally accredited public institution of higher education in New Mexico are guaranteed to transfer to any New Mexico college or university. Students enrolling for the first year of study at a New Mexico college or university and considering possible transfer into a certificate and/or degree program at another institution, are encouraged to take the courses approved for transfer during their freshman and sophomore year of study. Approved courses guaranteed to transfer and meet general education requirements can be found at http://hed.state.nm.us. Click on the “Colleges and Universities” link, then “Transferring Credits.” Also, some courses adhere to the universal “common course number” creating an easy one-to-one match. Information for San Juan College students regarding the New Mexico Common Core can be found at sanjuancollege.edu/pages/326.asp Student Activities The Office of Student Activities provides excellent opportunities for students to enrich their educational experience with social, recreational, cultural and sports activities. This office also serves as an information center. The office is located in the Student Center room 1621 and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday through Friday. The office is responsible for Associated Students, the Student Ambassadors program and all clubs and organizations. Associated Students Associated Students of San Juan College (A.S./ S.J.C.) provides students a voice in the quality of their educational experience and an opportunity for students to gain important leadership experience through active involvement in Student Government. Associated Students not only provides leadership for the student body, but also offers a wide variety of entertainment and provides funding and support for an extensive activities program.
