PREPARE FOR TAX SEASON 2018
Here are 10 ways to get a jump start on your taxes now:
• Figure out which forms you’ll need: There are many different tax
forms for different financial situations. If you’re unsure which tax
form to use, visit the IRS’s website or consult a professional.
• Keep all receipts in the same place: If you’re someone who itemizes
deductions, it is important to store all of your receipts together in
the same place. If you lose any, it could cost you.
• Store all tax returns together: Since we often have to reference the
previous year’s return when preparing the current one, it’s a good
idea to make sure you store them all in the same place.
• Review/revise your W-4: If you’ve experienced any life changes
from the previous year (adding or losing any family members), ask
your employer if you can review your W-4. The IRS recommends
doing this every year.
• Do your research: If you plan to do your taxes on your own, make
sure you educate yourself about the deductions you’re entitled to.
If you plan to hire someone, check around and make sure they’re
reputable.
• Save your money: Unless you fill out the 1040EZ form and mail it in
yourself, it’s going to cost you money to file your taxes.
• Check your deductions: If you’ve had any major life events this
year, you may be entitled to some sizable deductions. It’s a good
idea to research all possible deductions to avoid overpaying your
taxes.
• Track all charitable donations: Charitable donations are taxdeductible,
so if you have any monthly or one-off donations, make
sure to keep track so that you can deduct these expenses from your
taxes.
HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY
Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you
are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further.
Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated
to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled
children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is
limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we
chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.
Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are
always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great
way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have
gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s
Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will
be given to children - not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office
at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for
more information on our organization.
STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all
volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and
homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search
the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and
street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids
die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent
statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given
time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides
food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless
youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food
or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@
standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can
help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest
need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real
support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we
want to help them get off the streets.
ADOPT A US SOLDIER
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and
donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom
that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians
with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate
encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States
Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce
located across the United States.
After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as
follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III
When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from
writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items
a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and
country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives
with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see
BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND
OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for
the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor
training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers
are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL)
plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of
the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any
foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer
many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy.
Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested
in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy
Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help
us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program
called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for
senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could
benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning,
at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice
will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone.
If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time,
you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the
call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute
intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or
the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the
person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established
by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC
Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs
in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed
with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more
information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please
call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
Fulshear Community Newsletter | March 2018 21
Gardening Tips
for March
VEGETABLES
• Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans
and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe,
okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher),
southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.
LAWN
• Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of
Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun).
• When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY
the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.
com/grass.htm.
TREES AND SHRUBS
• Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In
shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a
dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or
one of the prostrate junipers.
• Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March.
However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have
bloomed.
• Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer
analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet
of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize
landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring
growing season starts.
