Introducing
March’s Pot-O-
Gold, Tank
Tank did not have a good
home environment and was
seized by authorities. He has
blossomed since arriving at
Young-Williams Animal Center.
It took a few days of letting him
get to know the folks at the
center, but it didn’t take long.
He quickly learned what it’s like
to have fun as a dog.
Tank is selective about which
dog he likes, but he is a joy to
be around and brings so much
energy to playtime. He is just
finishing up his heartworm
treatment and eager to go
home to a new, loving family.
He will be a medium-sized dog,
about 44 lbs., at the height of health.
Tank is eager to learn new tricks and has enough enthusiasm
for people that he just might be your next, best pot-o-gold
companion.
ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business rates are $300/150/75/35
for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and
$200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All
organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic
expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely
a utility animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the
animals are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded
shelters may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that
will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit
your home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these
animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to
ensure their safety and happiness in the future.
PREVENT A LITTER . . . FIX YOUR CRITTER!
Reduced Cost Spay/Neuter Resources and Subsidies for Low-Income Citizens
WHY SPAY & NEUTER?
• SPAYING & NEUTERING SPARES THE LIVES OF
UNWANTED PETS! Only 1 in 9 cats and dogs born in the
U.S. will find a home. The rest will be destroyed because
nobody wants them.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING CALMS YOUR PET! Altered
animals make more affectionate companions. Altered
animals are less likely to bite because they are more eventempered.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING INCREASES YOUR PET’S
SAFETY! Neutered males are less likely to roam, run
away, or get into fights. Spayed females are less likely to
attract unwanted animals into your yard.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING EXTENDS YOUR PET’S
LIFE! Altered animals live longer, healthier lives. Female
cats and dogs have reduced risks of uterine, ovarian, and
breast cancers. Male cats and dogs have reduced risks of
prostate cancer and disorders.
• SPAYING & NEUTERING RESULTS IN A CLEANER
HOME! Neutered cats are less likely to spray and mark
territory. Spaying eliminates carpet stains from bloody
fluid passed by female dogs during the heat cycle.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus—What’s Fact, What’s Fiction
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is not the same thing as Feline Leukemia (FeLV). The two are frequently mentioned togehter
because the test for FIV is often part of a “combo” test which also detects FeLV. But the viruses differ in how they affect your cat
and its expected lifespan.
Also, FIV is not HIV, the virus that cause AIDS in people. You can’t be infected by FIV; only felines.
FIV-positive cats can live in your home with other cats for years without transmitting the virus. FIV is most commonly transmitted by
deep bite wounds. The risk of cross infection is minimal for spayed or neutered indoor cats living together in the same household—
if they do not have serious fights.
FIV is a slow-acting virus. Cats may not show symptoms until years after the initial infection. The virus depletes the number of
white blood cells, so eventually the cat is less able to fight infections. There is no cure, but supportive medical care and a stressfree,
indoor environment helps. Ultimately, the lifespan depends somewhat on how lucky the cat is in avoiding secondary infections.
2017 Results
The GoNorth Transport Collaborative is a
group of animal shelters in east Tennessee
that work together to transport animals to
under-capacity northern animal shelters with
high adoption demand. Most shelters in east
Tennessee are perpetually overcrowded due
to random breeding by roaming, unaltered
pets. Pet overpopulation is generally not a
problem in northern states, where spaying
and neutering of pets is a routine part of
responsible pet ownership.
A total of 2682 animals were transported
to northern shelters in 2017. Since the
program’s inception in 2012, 11,275 animals
have been transported from east Tennessee
to partner shelters in northern states.
Transports take place twice each week with
an average of 25 animals per transport.
Sending shelters that participate in GoNorth
report that they have been able to eliminate
euthanasia for space.
East Tennessee shelter
statistics are improving,
i.e., more animals are
saved and fewer are
euthanized.
be a sign that your pet has gum disease.
Caring for your pets’ teeth is every bit as
important as making sure they get exercise and
a proper diet. In fact, Members of the American
Veterinary Medical Association think dental care
is significant enough to sponsor a National Pet
Dental Health Month every February.
Numerous “How To” articles on dental care
and videos showing you how to brush your
dog or cat’s teeth are available on the internet.
Essentially, they all list yearly dental evaluation,
regular cleaning, and brushing your pets’ teeth as
the most important things you can do.
Dental problems can cause, or be caused by,
other health problems. So, if you are serious
about your pet’s dental health
1. Start with a dental exam by your
veterinarian.
2. Ask your vet for a tooth care demonstration after a
cleaning.
3. Introduce your pet to brushing and dental care slowly, and
By Jacob Edward, www.seniorplanning.org
brush teeth frequently. (Believe it or not, many articles on
dental health recommend daily, if possible.)
4. Offer chew treats specifically developed to control plaque
and tartar in dogs and cats. Products with a
Veterinary Health Care Council (VHCC) seal
meet pre-set standards of effectiveness.
5. If recommended, feed your pet a special
dental diet.
6. Keep a watchful eye out for common signs
of oral disease:
• Yellow-brown tartar
• Bleeding gums
• Red, inflamed gums
• Bad breath
• Difficulty chewing/dropping food when
trying to eat
• Excessive drooling
• Change in eating habits
• Pawing at the mouth or rubbing the face
against the floor or furniture
Remember dental problems may make your pet irritable. Be
careful when evaluating their mouth because a painful mouth
may cause him or her to bite.
If Your Pet Goes Missing, Take Action. . .
Search Your Home and Alert Neighbors: Start
immediately. Talk to family members or housemates
and ask where they last saw your pet. Search your
home thoroughly.
Work the Phones: Call the local animal control
agencies, veterinary hospitals, shelters (both
municipal and private) and rescue groups in your
area.
Tell Your Social Media Networks: E-mail local
friends, colleagues, and family members and ask
them to pass on the information. Most communities
have local “Lost Pet” Facebook pages where they
will post information about your missing pet.
Create a “Lost Pet” Flyer: Create a flyer that
will stand out. Repeated viewings of a consistent
message are more likely to stick in people’s minds,
so stay with one design.
Blanket the Neighborhood: Post your flyers at
dog parks, pet supply stores, grooming shops, and
veterinary offices. Cover lampposts and trees near
where you think your pet was lost.
Don’t Give Up! This one is important! Remember
that many lost animals have found their way back
home.
a handsome tux with gorgeous
side so should probably go to a
home without young children. He
appears not to have been around
other cats or dogs. Bernie is about
1 year old.
