Church Garden Tidy Up 2018
As usual, we will hold our annual Garden(ing) Party before
Easter. This year it will be on Saturday 17 March from
10.15 onwards.
All helpers welcome for as much time as you can spare. No
experience needed, just bring gardening gloves and
secateurs if you have them. Great fun and free tea/coffee
and biscuits at half time for all gardeners!
Kirk Session Report
Wednesday 21st February
The Session was updated on the progress of Marianne Ewart who is in Hay Lodge – it was
pleased to note that she is improving and is in very good spirits, but does not know at this
time when she might get home.
We were also informed that Mrs Elizabeth Douglas is now out of BGH and has gone to stay
with one of her sons. We wish both Marianne and Elizabeth continued progress back to
health.
From the Moderator’s Committee the following was discussed:
There doesn’t seem to be much interest from anyone in having a stall at this year’s Heart
and Soul, so this will not be progressed.
Rev Bruce Lawrie will come to Peebles Old to lead the local church review.
Unfortunately due to ill health the proposed communicants’ group will be postponed.
Year of Young People – we are encouraged as a congregation to do something as part
of this and ideas are sought from members of the congregation. A possible suggestion of a
weekend focussing on young people was put forward and the Session was updated on an
idea from Eddleston of getting the school children to organise worship as part of that
particular weekend’s activities. It was thought we could possibly do something similar?
There is a lot of information available for the Year of Young People in booklet form from
the Church of Scotland and their w ebsite. The Session agreed that this w ould be a good
thing to be involved with and Calum will draw together a team to approach some of the
youth groups in the town.
Stewardship & Finance
Accounts for year to 31 December 2017
The Draft Statement of Financial Activities for the year ended 31 December 2017 was
presented by the Interim Treasurer. This showed the final figures, including all accruals
which will appear in the Annual Accounts to be sent to OSCR.
The total income for the year was £164,952, but this included the legacy of £50,000
from the estate of the late John Duncan. After taking that into account the total revenue
was £114,952.
Total expenditure was £130,364, but this included fabric repairs and maintenance costs
of £10,050 spent on the church steps and the replacement of the Church Centre boiler,
which was financed from the legacy of £12,000 carried forward from the previous year.
After adjusting for this the revenue expenditure is £120,314.
After these adjustments are made the surplus of £34,588 becomes a deficit of £5,364,
which is £642 more than budgeted.
