EEDITORIAL
As our team is finishing the sixth edition
of our beloved magazine, I take the time to
reflect yet again on the intricacies of South
American travel.
EDITOR & PUBLISHER
SYLVIE DUTOIT
In past issues we have covered several jewels of
this continent, as well as prime destinations in the
Caribbean. We are now giving Suriname another visit,
with among others the peacock bass destination; lake
Brokopondo.
Suriname is a lovely destination for both the noviceand
seasoned traveler. Its tourism industry is in many
ways still underdeveloped, and as such it allows the
traveler to really get to know its people when visiting.
Most guests get a homy feeling, and those who have
visited a lot of countries will always tell you the same
thing: Suriname is unlike anywhere else. When meeting
tourists and sharing stories I am always reminded of
how grateful I am for being a part of Suriname's story,
a story of travel, and at the same time, one of home.
MCHESTNUT-FRONTED
MACAWS
The Amazon is a remarkable place in South-America where
nature enthusiasts are being spoiled. It is where untouched
pristine primary forest is ‘filled’ with the most exotic items in the
world: orchids, hummingbirds, poison dart frogs and even the
most impressive creatures can be found here: Green Anaconda’s,
Harpy Eagles, Black Caimans and Large Macaws. The latter can
be best identified with the Amazon: large, exotic and loud.
PHOTOGRAPHER | TEXT - ARMIDA MADNGISA
Suriname is also part of the Amazon and is also host to many of
these wonderful creatures. One of them is called the Chestnutfronted
Macaw. It can be considered the little brother/sister of
the Large Macaw, this explains why they are also known as Mini
Macaws. The Chestnut-fronted Macaw is a widespread and
common bird in the Amazon. Noisy and vivid birds that every
morning bring the jungle to life with their lively chatter. Those
who have experienced this first hand know what I am talking
about. You can compare their excited morningchatter with first
grade kids on their first day at school.
The Chestnut-fronted Macaw is a social bird and can be seen
in groups of 5 – 8. They will ‘consume’ the morning sun before
heading off to find some food (Inga fruits, berries, maripa nuts
and blossoming flowers) Only when they have a break it is difficult
to spot them as they like to devour their food in silence. The
dropping of seeds or nuts will make their presence clear, but
due to their camouflage plumage it will be difficult to spot them.
Breeding season is between November – April, where they will
lay 2 or 3 eggs in a hollow tree. Both parents are involved during
the whole breeding period.
BHOTEL
BABYLON
TEXT - SUSHMA PHERAI I PHOTOGRAPHER - PETER NANDEN
Tucked away between two fashion shops in southern Paramaribo
is the marvelously designed and modern hotel Babylon.
Owner Joerawan, who has had years of experience in the hospitality branch in Amsterdam,
explains that every inch in the hotel and restaurant is designed to enhance the experience of
comfort and luxury. Just by entering the building, with 24 hours security, you are surrounded
by a harmonious blend of industrial materials, tree trunks and wooden tabletops, creating a
modern yet cozy feel. The solid tropical timber is reflected throughout the interior of the hotel
and its rooms. Hotel Babylon features 26 deluxe rooms and suites ranging from standard rooms
with minibar and coffee/tea facilities to luxurious suites for families or couples with completely
equipped kitchen and fridge. The rooms are designed with all modern conveniences such as
broadband Wi-Fi, cable TV and safety box. The crowning glory of the building are two elegant
spacious and rooftop penthouses with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a magical panorama
view of the city of Paramaribo. In house restaurant Atlas is designed with the same attention
for detail and harmony as the rest of the hotel. The chefs are trained overseas, presenting
international cuisine which varies from French, Italian and Arabic to Japanese.
Situated at the heart of the hotel is the swimming pool surrounded by comfortable couches
and cabanas where you can enjoy the sun during the day and the tropical breeze at night. The
hotel has parking facilities and is at walking distance from the Hermitage Mall, TBL Cinema,
Supermarkets, a gas station and an ATM. Hotel Babylon offers all travellers, from families
to businesspeople, the luxury and comfort they need during their stay in Surinam for a very
reasonable price.
MARINA & RESORT
MWATERLAND
TEXT - CHRIS MORVAN I PHOTOGRAPHER - ERWIN NELES I M&R WATERLAND
Suriname is changing rapidly, coming to terms with the 21st century and the wants
and needs of people looking to relax. And one of its main discoveries is that you don’t
need to leave the country to have relaxing time. For example; If you want to get out of
Paramaribo, you will want to spend a day, a week or even longer at the Marina Resort.
After only a 50 minutes drive from Paramaribo, you will find yourself in another world – the
Marina Resort world. It’s on the riverbanks just outside Domburg. You will lose the hustle
and bustle, the stress and the noise. It’s like going back in time, but taking modern amenities
with you. People go there for weekend outings, but that is just a taste of what you could enjoy
if you stayed for a longer period. For a superb Sunday lunch you can relax in the excellent
restaurant, in the peace and quiet of an area that has been developed so tastefully it still
looks pristine rainforest. At the Marina Resort you will stay in a beautiful, solid, fully equipped
house with the comforts of home – but utterly peaceful. The resort has a bar, a restaurant
and of course you can roam amongst the exotic trees and plants, many left undisturbed by
the developers, and others brought in from abroad.
MWATERLAND
If you’re staying for a while, stock up with some groceries from
a nearby supermarket and lose yourself in the resort living a life
of luxury. Park your car and switch to another mode of transport:
low-slung four-wheeled sit-down bycycles - or you can walk,
which adds to the feeling of being at one with nature. The houses
sit among the trees and shrubs. There’s a super-relaxing area
around a large fountain where the sound of the water competes
with nothing but the breeze in the trees.
MARINA & RESORT
MWATERLAND
© ERWIN NELES
It’s called the Marina Resort because there is a purpose-built floating marina right
there on the river, where visiting yachtsmen can tie up in safety and relax on dry land
for a while. Some leave their boat there for weeks or even months and fly back to
where they came from to attend to business before returning to their second home.
Local boaters take advantage of the substantial concrete slipway to get their boats
off the trailer and into the water. The resort is also ideal for families, with canoes and
little pedal-powered boats, suitably kitted out with safety equipment, with which to
potter about on the river,
So, an afternoon, a few weeks or longer: the choice is yours, but
word is getting around, so booking is now advisable. The resort
can also host events such as unique, intimate weddings or small
company team-building sessions. Only one potential problem:
some people may never want to leave.
THIS LAKE IS NOW A MAJOR ATTRACTION FOR THE SURINAMESE
PEOPLE AND IS ALSO THE HOMEGROUND TO ITS SURROUNDING
TRIBAL PEOPLES.
It is often affectionately called, meer, stuwmeer or brokopondo meer by local tourists who visit repeatedly.
The lake offers a unique and spectacular scenery, great fishing and boating opportunities
and endless camping and adventure possibilities. This scenery, unique to Suriname has come about
due to the inundation of the surrounding mountainous area. After the original river sides and creekbeds
were flooded the water rose to extreme heights leaving only some of the tallest hills untouched,
and leaving scores of trees lifeless. Many of these are still upright and protruding the waters’ surface
making for the typical look of the artificial lake.
28 I POPULAR-PLACES.COM 29
BTHE PROF DR W J VAN
BLOMMESTEYN MEER
Several commercial facilities around the lake offer lodging and dining, catering to to the needs of both
local and international guests. Much of the succes of the lake as a tourist attraction can be attributed to
its relatively easy access from Paramaribo and the other cities. This makes it easy for visitors to bring their
own equipment and enjoy a weekend in this watery jungle. Surinamese people prefer getting out for the
weekend to a destination which allows them to cater for themselves, making the stuwmeer a much revered
destination for all. The lake has for decades been the spot for catching the Tukunari (Cicla Occelaris), a
popular game fish which is also a great addition to the dinner table. Along with other species of game fish
it is the reason for many to motor their boats to every corner of the lake. With its surrounding forests and
nearby Nature Parks, surely a great future lies in store for the lake. All that is needed is a little vision to
protect the waters and its surrounding areas which include tribal lands, dense jungle and steep hills, which
offer a lot of nature for those who want to admire and enjoy it.
SNIFF DE SU FOUNDATION. SPEAK FOR THE UNSPOKEN!!
The sterilization of (stray) dogs and cats is the only humane way to curb the large pet
overpopulation in Suriname and will prevent 2 to 3 litters of 6 to 8 youngsters from being
born into a life of misery, pain and neglect. Studies have shown that 1 dog or cat, together
with her mate and all their non neutered offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years.
The goal of Sniff de Su (Spay Neuter It Forward Fast de Su) is to improve the overall animal
welfare in Suriname through education and by organizing 2 to 4 mega spay/neuter projects
annually. Pet owners are encouraged to have their dogs and cats sterilized to prevent their
litters from being dumped. These projects are conducted by visiting Veterinarians and
Veterinary Technicians from North America and Europe who selflessly volunteer their time
and expertise. Sniff de Su Foundation is 100% voluntary based and depends solely on funds
acquired through fundraising activities and contributions from people like you and me.
Financial donations will be used to cover project costs such as accommodation, meals and
ground transportation for the Veterinary Team, as well as advertising & promotion, medical
supplies and medication.
TEXT - FLY ALL WAYS - INGRID MASSELINK | PHOTGRAPHER - ERWIN NELES
Grenada is also called ‘Spice Island’ because of the production of nutmeg and mace
crops and it is one of the world’s largest exporters. The island’s capital is St. George's
which has about 110.000 inhabitants.
BEACHES
Grenada has some of the finest beaches in the Caribbean. The most spectacular is
Grand Anse, with a stretch of more than a mile and a half of snow white sand and
clear blue water. Besides Grand Anse, Mome rouge is a nice beach with snorkeling
opportunities. All Grenadian beaches are open to the public, and none are marred
by imposing hotels or concrete apartment blocks, thanks to the island’s sensible
building code.
RAINFOREST
The rainforest of Grenada is home to the Grenada dove (The national bird), Mona monkey
and several unique birds and animals. The Grand Etang National Park and Forest
Reserve is a unique experience of nature in all her glory. Its centerpiece is Lake Grand
Etang, once an active volcano. There are several breathtaking hikes that can be undertaken.
For example the demanding hike to the Telfour Bedau. Grenada also has plenty
of stunning waterfalls. For example the Mount Carmel Waterfall, which is the most
forceful waterfall of the island with a drop of over 70 feet.
FORT GEORGE
This historical 300 year old fort, which overlooks the town and harbor of St.George,
offers stunning views. With its old cannons and battlements, it has featured in the
political history of the island and is easily accessed via the main road.
EATING OUT
Grenada’s kitchen offers a blend of African,
Asian and European traditions and therefore
there are some“fusion” restaurants such
as the Red Crab, Belair Plantation and the
Aquarium. Make sure you try the stewed
Lambie (conch) at Cocounut beach and
Oildown (breadfruit stew) from the street
eateries around lunchtime.
CARRIACOU
Carriacou is Grenada’s small brother and
offers some of the most beautiful coral
reefs. It is known as the ‘land of reefs’;
which is the native American meaning of
Carriacou. An extra special diving attraction
is the active underwater volcano. The
island is home to 8,000 people. They have
strong musical traditions which can be
experienced during the Maroon and String
Band Music Festival. You can visit the island
by doing a day trip to the beautiful
island from Grenada.
40 ROUGH COWBOYS, 40.000 HECTARES,
20.000 HEADS OF CATTLE AND 600 HORSES
IS WHAT YOU WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH.
It’s hot, its wild and it’s for real! Arriving at the Ranch, just like the 40 local seasonal cowboys you will get;
a saddle and a Capotera (small bag to put your clothes/belongings in). You choose your bed in one of the
rooms of the hacienda and rapport yourself to El Caporal (chief of the cowboys) who will explain your job
for the next 8 days. I guess you already get the idea; this trip is no joke! :-)
If you are looking for adventure, for authenticity, for an unbelievable equestrian experience and for the time of
your life than you have to sign up to participate at the Colombian Cowboy Experience and be most welcome in
LOS LLANOS – COLOMBIA! Twice a year at the Santana farm, deep in the Colombian Llanos of the province
Casanare, 600 horses and a couple of thousand cattle are rounded up to be treated, to castrate them, to mark
them, and to break in the young horses. This will be your job! Very different as where you come from, the
Colombian vaquero’s (cowboy’s) don’t lose a lot of time to break in a horse. They saddle up the wild horse and
off they go. The bucking fury will lose its bronco temper in the big open savanna. The tired horse will surrender
and will soon follow the commands of his rider.
For the next couple of days this newly broken-in horse will be used in the field for cattle work, going with the
flow, learning the job, getting along with its rider, building up a relationship between horse and rider. That’s
the way the Llanero cowboy has been doing it for centuries, the way things are done in the big savanna. It’s
here that you will be confronted with a new culture. Very different and probably a lot harder than what you are
used to at home. Fact is that their reality is also a lot harder, so we do not judge, but learn, adapt and absorb.
As that’s what travelling is all about. See yourself as an anthropologic during this trip, jump into this adventure
and become a real Llanero. (cowboy of the llanos). You can watch, or you can participate, up to you to decide
how far you want to go into this adventure. Herding hundreds of horses from the saddle at fast speed, treating
wild horses, braking them in and schooling them. But life at a cattle farm is not only about horses, you will
also get into the saddle to do cattle work. During cattle drives you will be crossing rivers, where you might have
to swim with your horse and the cattle to get them to other grazing grounds or corrals where they have to be
treated. You will understand that if you want to be part of this cowboy team that you have to be a tough and very
experienced rider. Only good riders, not afraid of the rough action allowed on this trip!
DO BRASIL
The Santana ranch is one of the 5 biggest cattle farms of Colombia. Its located in the province of
Casanare in the heart of Los Llanos, a region with one of the biggest biodiversity’s in the world.
Alligators, anacondas, capybaras, all kind of birds and a lot more wildlife live on the grazing
grounds of the farm. Or in fact it’s the other way around; cowboys, horses and cattle live in the
nature reserve of El Hato Santana. This huge farm has NOT the intention to work in tourism, to
build chalets, tourist camps or to become a dude ranch. No, they don’t need it and they don’t want
it. But, I (Paul) know the owners and they allow me and my friends to meet their culture and their
daily life at a real authentic Colombian cattle ranch. You will be part of an unbelievable Colombian
Cowboy experience! But, I don’t want you to be afraid of all the tough stuff mentioned before. The
locals at the farm are very friendly and proud people and they will welcome you with open arms
and share with you all they have and all they know. The holiday is going to have rough activities, but
after every hard day of work you will be able to relax at the very beautiful hacienda. You will share
your comfortable room with other companions, good dinners and ice-cold beers will be served,
a refreshing swim in the swimming pool is possible, but the next day at 04:00 AM catllework or
round-up duty will call you. So I can honestly say that what the others do at other places or farms
is a pony ride compared to what you will do!
Each year in the month of May (wet season) and November (dry seaon) the “Trabajo de Llano” is an
event at the Santana ranch. It takes 40 days and 40 men to do the job. You, this time, will only stay 8
days, but I promise you that you will have 40 new experiences and 40 new friends! This is an adventure
of a lifetime. Ready for it?
We also have another trip in Colombia!
“Botas para montar, Zapatos para bailar” - Riding Boots & Dancing Shoes
Be warned, this is a swinging, galloping fun trip!
Horses & Salsa that’s what it’s all about in Cali. Yes, on this trip we’re going to give you the best of
Colombia. Take your Botas para montar and Zapatos para bailar, with other words take your Boots
for riding and Shoes for dancing! What’s the plan? Cali has some of the best purebred Paso Fino
horses in the country and is also the Salsa capital of the world.
