WHAT CAN I EAT WITH THIS BEAK? Sheldrake Nature Center Grade Level: K-4 Do different birds have different beaks? Let’s explore this unique bird adaptation together. We’ll try out some different kinds of beaks and figure it out! ADVENTURES IN SCRATCH! Digital Arts Experience Grade Level: 1-2 Create original video games using Scratch! Scratch is a programming language developed by MIT and specifically designed to make programming fun and easy. Students will start with the Hour of Code and then explore how to create games with Scratch. By the end of the class, students will have successfully designed original video games that they will be able to share with their friends and family! STOP MOTION ANIMATION WITH LEGOS Digital Arts Experience Grade Level: 1-2 Learn how movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wallace and Gromit, and more were made. Stop motion animations are created by taking many individual pictures and playing them back at a certain speed in order to create movement. Students will explore stop motion animation by creating stories with Legos. Participants can expect to finish this class having completed several animations. DISCOVER CAMP ROCKET BUILDING Discover Camp Grade Level: 2-4 You may or may not have built rockets before, but we'll show you how we do it in a short workshop. Through instructional modeling, we'll first demonstrate how model rockets are constructed with our own special strategies. Every child will leave with a rocket that is ready to launch. LIFE IN A VACUUM The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum Grade Level: 2-5 Learn how important the earth’s atmosphere is and discover why astronauts need to wear those big, heavy space suits. Using a bell jar and a vacuum pump, Intrepid educators will mimic the vacuum of space. Students will make predictions and then discover what happens to various objects when they are exposed to a vacuum. Finally, they will apply what they have learned to determine how the human body would react to the vacuum of space. MUSIC PRODUCTION AND THE SCIENCE OF SOUND Bach to Rock: America’s Music School Grade Level: 3-5 Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? Learn the science behind creating a hit song on the radio. We will explore various sounds and learn how to make a hit song of your very own! PUFF MOBILE IBM Grade Level: 3-5 During this workshop, led by two women from IBM, students will build a wind-puff-powered car using only the materials provided. The goal will be to design and build the most aerodynamic vehicle that can travel the farthest with the least number of puffs!
ROBO SUMO DERBY Curious-on-Hudson Grade Level: 3-5 Students will use Legos, robots, and their own original designs in an attempt to be the last bot standing. Beginning with simple instructions using optical bar codes and scanning, students learn to program devices to follow directions. INTRO TO 3D PRINTING AND DESIGN Digital Arts Experience Grade Level: 3-5 Design and print 3D original objects! Students will discover the history of this incredible technology and learn how to safely and properly operate a 3D printer. Using TinkerCAD, a free web-based modeling program, students will learn how to design and 3D print original objects. MYSTERIOUS PICTURES AND SECRET CODES Melkana Brakalova, Ph.D. Mathematics, Fordham University Grade Level: 3-5 In this workshop, we will use code to draw a picture on square grid paper. We will use our skills to locate a treasure island using encoded directions. We will also learn how to encode and decode messages using the Magic Coding Wheel. If time allows, we will also work with Pascal’s triangle, a random maze. DISCOVER CAMP 3D DESIGN Discover Camp Grade Level: 5 3D printing is quickly taking over the world of manufacturing. Discover Camp was the first camp in the country to integrate this emerging technology into summer camp classes. This workshop will introduce children to the work of 3D design. Completed projects will be ready for printing or importing into your Minecraft world. 3D printers will be on-hand for demonstration, but due to time constraints, we will not be able to print projects. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING Climate Change & Environmental Services, LLC Grade Level: 5 Learn how the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land upon which we travel are all interconnected and how taking care of them is important for good health, a good economy, and for achieving the mitzvah of Tikkun Olam. CODE USING TOUCHDEVELOP WITH MICROSOFT Microsoft Grade Level: All TouchDevelop is perfect for beginner coders, or those who have some experience with Hour of Code. You’ll be creating your own personalized version of a popular game! Learn how to continue on your coding path. DESIGN YOUR OWN BEVERAGE Pepsi Grade Level: All Create your own beverage that you get to drink and take home! Come learn the science and technology behind your creation with the senior food scientists and chemical engineers at Pepsi.
