FOCUS ON DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS: 

ANCHORING DOCKS 

Periodically we will feature a discussion of a particular common deed 

restriction violation to explain the logic behind the violation. This month 

we will focus on anchoring docks to become level. 

One of the unique characteristics of Sydney Harbour is the docks on 

our lakefront lots. Houston subdivisions usually reserve lakefront land 

as common areas. Sydney Harbour residents can own their own dock, 

adding to our property values and enjoyment.

Most docks are fairly low maintenance, but certain designs in Sydney 

Harbour are more prone to level issues. During periods of high water, the 

dock floats and pulls up its support posts. When the water recedes, the 

dock is no longer level. If this description describes your dock, then you 

have probably received 

or will soon receive 

a deed restriction 

violation. 

Uneven docks look unsightly and detract from our signature feature - the lakes. Also, they visually 

infer that the overall property is not maintained. This hurts the value of both the offending property, 

but also for all its neighbors. For this reason, they are not permitted in Sydney Harbour. 

Many residents have successfully repaired their docks by re-anchoring the dock posts, The HOA 

will compile a list of contractors who can repair docks and post it on the Sydney Harbour website. 

If your dock was successfully repaired, please help your neighbors and contact Sussan at 832-600- 

4142 with the contact information for your contractor.

Your Board has been in contact with the owner of the company who has been contracted on 

behalf of ATT to lay the fiber optic cables in our community. They have assured the Board 

that all issues will be corrected by the completion of the job. Sod will be replaced and if any 

irrigation systems were damaged they will be repaired. They have a cleanup crew come in 

to handle these issues after all the cable has been installed. If for some reason your issue is

CCS to Participate in the College Board AP Capstone Diploma Program 

CCS is one of approximately 1,500 high schools worldwide to implement 

the AP Capstone Program - an innovative program that allows students 

to develop skills that matter most for college success, such as research, 

collaboration and communication. Developed in direct response to 

feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers, 

AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific study of other 

Advanced Placement courses and exams. The program consists of two 

courses taken in sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research. 

The Covenant Academy Chess Players won a third place team trophy 

at the Region V Scholastic Championship on January 27 th .

State Representative Honors Warrior Football 

State Representative and CCS parent, Dr. Tom Oliverson visited the 

campus recently to honor the Cypress Christian Warriors football team. 

He presented each player and coach with a certificate of honor for 

accomplishing something that had never been done in school history, 

bringing home the TAPPS Division III State Championship trophy for 

football. The school was also presented with a Texas flag that was flown at 

the Capitol of the Sovereign State of Texas.

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE GENERATES 

NEARLY $340,000 FOR PROJECTS 

CFISD students and the high school FFA programs showcased another 

successful CFISD Livestock Show and Sale, its 24 th year, on Feb. 8 th -10 th at 

the CFISD Exhibit Center. 

Even with the entire greater Houston area recovering from Hurricane 

Harvey and the post-storm flooding, the CFISD community showed an 

incredible amount of generosity in the live auction, freezer sale and via 

additional monetary contributions to students. 

The Premium Sale (live auction) unofficially raised nearly $340,000. 

Final amounts from the Freezer Sale (animals not placing high enough 

for the live auction), Agriculture Mechanics and Horticulture silent 

auction and additional gifts to students are not yet available, but one 

new record was broken: 

Conda Maze JRP LLC paid $31,000 for the Grand Champion swine exhibited 

by Jessica Byrd (Cypress Falls), eclipsing the previous record. 

The victorious Lady Patriots and their fabulous Coach, Jim Hardwick, 

end their terrific season with a feisty win! Congratulations to our MS and 

HS basketball teams for playing Patriot Strong this season.

“Knowing the tremendous hardship (Hurricane Harvey) placed on the 

community, we were prepared for participation to be down,” said Denise 

Kubecka, lead curriculum coordinator in the career and technical education 

department. “When it came time for students to turn in their entries, we 

realized our numbers would once again be strong. In the wake of all going 

on in the community, families found a way to keep their children involved 

in the FFA program. It is always an emotional experience for me to watch 

the pride the students exhibit as they walk into that arena. This year was 

even more exciting knowing the extra obstacles many students had to 

overcome.”

TO 9,000 EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS 

Approximately 9,000 students from 18 CFISD middle schools connected to 

potential careers and opportunities in Junior Achievement of Southeast 

Texas (JASET)’s fifth annual job awareness fair, JA Inspire, Feb. 5 th -7 th . 

The three-day event at the Berry Center allowed all eighth-grade students 

to interact with more than 50 Houston businesses in a variety of industries. 

Each day began with a morning welcome session for all students in 

the Berry Center arena. Students were then divided in three groups 

that rotated between industry presentations in the conference center, 

a soft-skills demonstration in the arena and exhibitors in the secondfloor 

concourse. Students were divided up by four endorsement tracks 

(STEM, business and industry, public services and arts and humanities) 

that they selected beforehand to receive a more specialized experience. 

While exploring career stations on the concourse, students spoke with 

company employees and industry representatives to learn more about 

their businesses. 

Speakers in different career fields closed each day. They included KPRC 

Channel 2 anchor Rachel McNeill, a Cypress Creek High School graduate and 

Heritage Texas Properties realtor associate Lily Jang, a Langham Creek High 

School graduate. 

“Our eighth-grade students are fortunate to be able to participate in an 

interactive experience that provides them with information on a variety 

of careers and local employers from the greater Houston area,” said Dr. 

Linda Macias, associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction and 

accountability. “This will assist them in making informed decisions when 

selecting an endorsement and course selections for high school.” 


PREPARE FOR TAX SEASON 2018 

Here are 10 ways to get a jump start on your taxes now: 

• Figure out which forms you’ll need: There are many different 

tax forms for different financial situations. If you’re unsure 

which tax form to use, visit the IRS’s website or consult a 

professional. 

• Keep all receipts in the same place: If you’re someone who 

itemizes deductions, it is important to store all of your receipts 

together in the same place. If you lose any, it could cost you. 

• Store all tax returns together: Since we often have to reference 

the previous year’s return when preparing the current one, it’s 

a good idea to make sure you store them all in the same place. 

• Review/revise your W-4: If you’ve experienced any life 

changes from the previous year (adding or losing any family 

members), ask your employer if you can review your W-4. The 

IRS recommends doing this every year. 

• Do your research: If you plan to do your taxes on your own, 

make sure you educate yourself about the deductions you’re 

entitled to. If you plan to hire someone, check around and 

make sure they’re reputable. 

• Save your money: Unless you fill out the 1040EZ form and mail 

it in yourself, it’s going to cost you money to file your taxes. 

• Check your deductions: If you’ve had any major life events 

this year, you may be entitled to some sizable deductions. 

It’s a good idea to research all possible deductions to avoid 

overpaying your taxes. 

• Track all charitable donations: Charitable donations are taxdeductible, 

so if you have any monthly or one-off donations, 

make sure to keep track so that you can deduct these expenses 

from your taxes.

ART FESTIVAL MEMORIAL PARK 2018 

Bayou City Art Festival, produced by Art Colony Association, 

Inc. (ACA), is inviting artists from around the country to submit 

applications and have the opportunity to showcase their art at 

the nation’s premier spring outdoor fine art event Friday-Sunday, 

March 23-25, 2018. 

ACA produces Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park in the spring 

and Bayou City Art Festival Downtown in the fall. Now entering 

its 47 th year, ACA has provided a venue for over 20,000 artists to 

showcase their work to thousands of art lovers from all over the 

world. Patrons have the opportunity to personally meet the artist, 

view original works and purchase world class art. The festival 

benefits local non-profits and features music, food, beverages, 

entertainment, a Children’s Creative Zone and much more for 

people of all ages to come and enjoy the city and the festival. 

Twice a year, over 1,000 qualified applicants from 19 different 

disciples submit their applications to be reviewed by the ACA jurors. 

For each festival, a new juror panel is invited and consists of artists, 

collectors and industry professionals. The panel of five to seven 

jurors are selected based on their specific interests, professional 

knowledge and background with the festival. Only 300 artists will 

be selected to exhibit at the 2018 Bayou City Art Festival Memorial 

Park. Cash Prizes are awarded for “Best in Show,” second and 

third, as selected by on-site judges. Ribbons are awarded for “Best 

Booth” and all winners receive jury exempt status for two years as 

well as priority booth placement.

CFISD SUPERINTENDENT’S FUN RUN AND FESTIVAL 

The fifth annual CFISD Superintendent’s Fun Run and Festival is set for March 24, 

2018 from 8-11 AM at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road) and the Towne 

Lake community. 

Underwritten by Memorial Hermann Cypress, the fun-filled community event 

will include a 5K run and a family-friendly 1-mile. The fun run will feature booth 

vendors, food trucks, entertainment and activities for children. Proceeds from 

the Superintendent’s Fun Run benefit the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation 

(CFEF), which awards student scholarships and staff development grants. The 

fourth annual event held in February 2017 generated more than $63,000 for the

SHIELD BEARER RUNNING FOR HEARTS 

5K FAMILY FUN RUN AND WALK 

The Shield Bearer Running for Hearts 5K Family Fun Run and Walk will 

take place on April 7, 2018, 7-11 AM, at Windwood Church at 10555 Spring 

Cypress Road in Houston, Texas. This family friendly event will feature a 

5K timed, trail style run, a 1-mile family walk, games for the kids, t-shirts, 

food, prizes and lots of fun for all ages. Race registration is $25 for adults 

(ages 14 and up) and $10 for children (ages 13 and under) before March 

20, 2018. Registration, sponsorship, vendor, fundraising and volunteer

Proceeds for the event will fund services and programs at Shield Bearer, 

a Houston based 501c3 nonprofit counseling and community resource 

center that provides services on a sliding scale. Shield Bearer has five 

locations in Houston and serves individuals, couples and families 

including those recovering from the trauma of human trafficking, domestic

to the Spring showcase event and has become one of the

Through March 18 th - The Houston Livestock Show 

and Rodeo is the world’s largest livestock Show

heralds the beginning of Spring! The Trail kicks

March 3 rd - The Houston Area Women’s Center 

(HAWC) is proud to kick off our 30 th Annual Race

March 4 th - AIDS Foundation Houston, Inc.(AFH) 

hosts the 29 th Annual AIDS Walk Houston on 

Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Sam Houston Park in 

Downtown Houston. This signature event is the 

city’s single greatest response in the fight against 

HIV/AIDS. Funds raised help local HIV/AIDS service 

organizations provide programs and services to 

almost 30,000 Houstonians impacted by the virus. 

This year, the annual fundraiser will culminate in a 

free outdoor concert featuring live performances 

from Houston-based artists. VIP wristbands for the 

concert will be available to 1,500 Houstonians who

March 10 th - Join us for Texas’ largest canoe 

and kayak race - the 46 th Annual Buffalo Bayou 

Partnership Regatta. Paddlers (ages 12 and

the scenic Buffalo Bayou. Whether you are entering 

competitively or paddling for pleasure, you won’t

March 18 th - Tour de Houston Presented by Apache 

Corporation is a fundraising bike ride that benefits 

Houston’s Reforestation Program. The ride will 

take place Sunday, March 18, 2018. This annual

way to view the city with bike routes winding 

through Houston’s historic neighborhoods, scenic 

districts and parks. With three ride length options, 

the Tour de Houston is the perfect event for leisure

Memorial Hermann Health System recognizes the vital importance of 

volunteers and the newly opened Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital 

is no different. The hospital is now taking applications for its volunteer 

program. Volunteer tasks range from working at the front desk, to nursing 

unit assistance, helping discharge patients and much more. Dozens of 

volunteers have already joined the program, but there are more spots 

available. Four-hour volunteer shifts are available seven days a week from 

5 AM to 9 PM. Adults are asked to complete an application and schedule an

SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS 

Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to 

providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages 

living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that 

we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits 

as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a nonprofit 

organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the 

farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school 

and college-aged students interested in working with both children and 

animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e.,

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL) 

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. 

That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities 

arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out 

how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. 

Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help 

prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long 

course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council 

for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s 

BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.

Gardening Tips

VEGETABLES 

• Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans 

and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, 

okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), 

southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. 

LAWN 

• Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of 

Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). 

• When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY 

the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers. 

com/grass.htm. 

TREES AND SHRUBS 

• Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In 

shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a 

dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or 

one of the prostrate junipers. 

• Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. 

However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have 

bloomed. 

• Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer 

analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet 

of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize 

landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring 

growing season starts.

Hot Fruit Compote 

You could make this on National Fruit Compote Day March 1 st ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (16 ounce) can pears in juice 

1 (15 ounce) can peaches in juice 

1 (15 ounce) can pitted cherries in water 

1 cup quick-cooking oats 

1/2 cup brown sugar, divided 

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

2 tablespoons butter, cut in small pieces 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour 

pears, peaches and cherries with their liquids into the prepared baking dish, stir. 

Stir oats and 1/4 cup brown sugar together in a bowl, sprinkle over the fruit mixture. 

Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar over the oat layer. Sprinkle cinnamon over the 

brown sugar. Arrange butter pieces evenly over the top. Bake until hot, bubbly and slightly 

brown at edges, about 20 minutes. 

Serve over waffles, pancakes, scones or shortbread. Also great served warm over vanilla 

ice cream!
