PREPARE FOR TAX SEASON 2018
Here are 10 ways to get a jump start on your taxes now:
• Figure out which forms you’ll need: There are many different
tax forms for different financial situations. If you’re unsure
which tax form to use, visit the IRS’s website or consult a
professional.
• Keep all receipts in the same place: If you’re someone who
itemizes deductions, it is important to store all of your receipts
together in the same place. If you lose any, it could cost you.
• Store all tax returns together: Since we often have to reference
the previous year’s return when preparing the current one, it’s
a good idea to make sure you store them all in the same place.
• Review/revise your W-4: If you’ve experienced any life
changes from the previous year (adding or losing any family
members), ask your employer if you can review your W-4. The
IRS recommends doing this every year.
• Do your research: If you plan to do your taxes on your own,
make sure you educate yourself about the deductions you’re
entitled to. If you plan to hire someone, check around and
make sure they’re reputable.
• Save your money: Unless you fill out the 1040EZ form and mail
it in yourself, it’s going to cost you money to file your taxes.
• Check your deductions: If you’ve had any major life events
this year, you may be entitled to some sizable deductions.
It’s a good idea to research all possible deductions to avoid
overpaying your taxes.
• Track all charitable donations: Charitable donations are taxdeductible,
so if you have any monthly or one-off donations,
make sure to keep track so that you can deduct these expenses
from your taxes.

CCS to Participate in the College Board AP Capstone Diploma Program
CCS is one of approximately 1,500 high schools worldwide to implement
the AP Capstone Program - an innovative program that allows students
to develop skills that matter most for college success, such as research,
collaboration and communication. Developed in direct response to
feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers,
AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific study of other
Advanced Placement courses and exams. The program consists of two
courses taken in sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research.
State Representative Honors Warrior Football
State Representative and CCS parent, Dr. Tom Oliverson visited the
campus recently to honor the Cypress Christian Warriors football team.
He presented each player and coach with a certificate of honor for
accomplishing something that had never been done in school history,
bringing home the TAPPS Division III State Championship trophy for
football. The school was also presented with a Texas flag that was flown at
the Capitol of the Sovereign State of Texas.

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE GENERATES
NEARLY $340,000 FOR PROJECTS
CFISD students and the high school FFA programs showcased another
successful CFISD Livestock Show and Sale, its 24 th year, on Feb. 8 th -10 th at
the CFISD Exhibit Center.
Even with the entire greater Houston area recovering from Hurricane
Harvey and the post-storm flooding, the CFISD community showed an
incredible amount of generosity in the live auction, freezer sale and via
additional monetary contributions to students.
The Premium Sale (live auction) unofficially raised nearly $340,000.
Final amounts from the Freezer Sale (animals not placing high enough
for the live auction), Agriculture Mechanics and Horticulture silent
auction and additional gifts to students are not yet available, but one
new record was broken:
Conda Maze JRP LLC paid $31,000 for the Grand Champion swine exhibited
by Jessica Byrd (Cypress Falls), eclipsing the previous record.
“Knowing the tremendous hardship (Hurricane Harvey) placed on the
community, we were prepared for participation to be down,” said Denise
Kubecka, lead curriculum coordinator in the career and technical education
department. “When it came time for students to turn in their entries, we
realized our numbers would once again be strong. In the wake of all going
on in the community, families found a way to keep their children involved
in the FFA program. It is always an emotional experience for me to watch
the pride the students exhibit as they walk into that arena. This year was
even more exciting knowing the extra obstacles many students had to
overcome.”

TO 9,000 EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS
Approximately 9,000 students from 18 CFISD middle schools connected to
potential careers and opportunities in Junior Achievement of Southeast
Texas (JASET)’s fifth annual job awareness fair, JA Inspire, Feb. 5 th -7 th .
The three-day event at the Berry Center allowed all eighth-grade students
to interact with more than 50 Houston businesses in a variety of industries.

Each day began with a morning welcome session for all students in
the Berry Center arena. Students were then divided in three groups
that rotated between industry presentations in the conference center,
a soft-skills demonstration in the arena and exhibitors in the secondfloor
concourse. Students were divided up by four endorsement tracks
(STEM, business and industry, public services and arts and humanities)
that they selected beforehand to receive a more specialized experience.
While exploring career stations on the concourse, students spoke with
company employees and industry representatives to learn more about
their businesses.
Speakers in different career fields closed each day. They included KPRC
Channel 2 anchor Rachel McNeill, a Cypress Creek High School graduate and
Heritage Texas Properties realtor associate Lily Jang, a Langham Creek High
School graduate.
“Our eighth-grade students are fortunate to be able to participate in an
interactive experience that provides them with information on a variety
of careers and local employers from the greater Houston area,” said Dr.
Linda Macias, associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction and
accountability. “This will assist them in making informed decisions when
selecting an endorsement and course selections for high school.”

CHILDREN’S EASTER FESTIVAL
Cornerstone United Methodist Church invites and welcomes our
community friends and neighbors along with our own “Family of Faith” to
join us for our annual Children’s Easter Festival on Saturday, March 31 st ,
from 9 to 10:30 AM. There will be games and activities for the whole family
including inflatables, crafts, face painting, pictures with the Easter Bunny
and more. Of course, there will be an Easter Egg Hunt for various age
groups as well. Cornerstone UMC practices being cheerful and generous
givers. If you are able, please bring a non-perishable food item to be given
to a local charity that provides food to those in need our local community.
HOLY WEEK WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Holy Week represents the last week of Jesus’ life on earth, beginning with
his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and culminating
with his glorious resurrection from the dead the following Sunday, Easter.
This year Holy Week is from Sunday, April 9 th through Sunday, April 16 th .
During this week, Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be offering
a variety of worship and fellowship opportunities. You are invited to
the following Holy Week worship opportunities for young and old alike
planned at Cornerstone UMC:
PALM SUNDAY SERVICES (March 25 th ): At the 10:45 AM service, the
children will lead a processional in worship waving palm branches as we
remember and celebrate Jesus entry into Jerusalem. Also at the 8:30 and
10:45 AM services, the Chancel Choir accompanied by an orchestra will be
performing their Easter Cantata: “Once Upon a Tree!”. There will be NO 9:35
AM service but there will be “Christian Education for All Ages” at 9:30 AM.
MAUNDY THURSDAY COMMUNION SERVICE (March 29 th ): The word
Maundy literally means “command,” reminding Christians that Jesus
commanded his followers at the Last Supper to “do this in remembrance
of me.” At 6:30 PM, a Seder Meal hosted by Rev. David Rucker will be
celebrated in the Family Life Center. Holy Communion will be served.
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE (March 30 th ): At 7 PM, we will gather to
commemorate the crucifixion of our Lord with the Stations of the Cross
and the blackening of the sanctuary. Special music for the service will be
provided by the Chancel Choir.
EASTER SUNDAY MORNING SERVICES (April 1 st ): At 8:30 & 10:45 AM, we
will have inspiring services with the Chancel Choir and an accompanying
orchestra providing the special music. At the 9:35 AM service, the Journey
Praise Band will lead the celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES
Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be offering to the community
a study on Gary Chapman’s renown “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to
Love That Lasts” starting on Tuesday, April 10 th at 7-8:15 PM. This study
reveals how different people express love in different ways and contains
the key to understanding each other’s unique needs. What speaks love to
you may be meaningless to your spouse. Apply the right principles, learn
the right language and soon you’ll know the profound satisfaction and joy
of being able to express your love and feel truly loved in return. Each week
the group will view a teaching by Dr. Chapman and have the opportunity
to discuss the principles taught both in the small group and with your
spouse. Singles are also welcome as there will be opportunity to apply
the teaching to relationships with children, parents and other significant
people in one’s life. Classes will last for 75 minutes and a nursery for
preschool children will be available by advanced reservation. Each
participant will need a small-group study book, which can be purchased
from the church. The cost is $10 per book.
Note: Vacation Bible School will be June 11 th -15 th .

St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church welcomes all to come worship with us
during Holy Week:
PALM SUNDAY, MARCH 25 TH : at 8 AM and 10:30 AM with Holy Communion
and the Liturgy of the Palms. Palm Sunday remembers Jesus’ triumphal
entry into Jerusalem.
MAUNDY THURSDAY, MARCH 29 TH : at 7 PM with Holy Communion and
the Stripping of the Altar. This service commemorates the Last Supper of
Jesus Christ with the Apostles.
GOOD FRIDAY, MARCH 30 TH : at 9:30 AM we will meet at Goforth Park,
9118 Wheat Cross Drive, to walk the Stations of the Cross. During this
time, we will recall the series of events at the end of Jesus’ life from his
condemnation to his burial. All ages are welcome. At 7 PM, at the church,
there will be a Good Friday Liturgy with Communion from the reserve
sacrament.
EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 1 ST : we invite everyone to celebrate the risen
Lord! Holy Communion and baptisms at 8 AM and Holy Communion at
10:30 AM. After each service there will be an Easter Egg hunt for all children.

hosts the 29 th Annual AIDS Walk Houston on
Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Sam Houston Park in

Bayou City Art Festival, produced by Art Colony Association,
Inc. (ACA), is inviting artists from around the country to submit
applications and have the opportunity to showcase their art at
the nation’s premier spring outdoor fine art event Friday-Sunday,
March 23-25, 2018.
ACA produces Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park in the spring and
Bayou City Art Festival Downtown in the fall. Now entering its 47 th
year, ACA has provided a venue for over 20,000 artists to showcase
their work to thousands of art lovers from all over the world. Patrons
have the opportunity to personally meet the artist, view original
works and purchase world class art. The festival benefits local
non-profits and features music, food, beverages, entertainment, a
Children’s Creative Zone and much more for people of all ages to
come and enjoy the city and the festival.
Twice a year, over 1,000 qualified applicants from 19 different
disciples submit their applications to be reviewed by the ACA jurors.
For each festival, a new juror panel is invited and consists of artists,
collectors and industry professionals. The panel of five to seven
jurors are selected based on their specific interests, professional
knowledge and background with the festival. Only 300 artists will
be selected to exhibit at the 2018 Bayou City Art Festival Memorial
Park. Cash Prizes are awarded for “Best in Show,” second and third,
as selected by on-site judges. Ribbons are awarded for “Best Booth”
and all winners receive jury exempt status for two years as well as
priority booth placement.

CFISD SUPERINTENDENT’S FUN RUN AND FESTIVAL
The fifth annual CFISD Superintendent’s Fun Run and Festival is set for March
24, 2018 from 8-11 AM at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road) and the
Towne Lake community.
Underwritten by Memorial Hermann Cypress, the fun-filled community event
will include a 5K run and a family-friendly 1-mile. The fun run will feature booth
vendors, food trucks, entertainment and activities for children.
Proceeds from the Superintendent’s Fun Run benefit the Cy-Fair Educational
Foundation (CFEF), which awards student scholarships and staff development
grants. The fourth annual event held in February 2017 generated more than
$63,000 for the foundation.

CAF HOUSTON WING’S WARBIRD
WEEKEND AND OPEN HOUSE
On Saturday and Sunday, April 14 th & 15 th from10 AM until 5 PM,
those big, old airplanes with the mighty round engines will be flying
again as the Commemorative Air Force’s Houston Wing presents its
2018 Warbird Weekend and Open House at Hangar B-5, West Houston
Airport. Get up close and feel the prop wash and hear the noise as
radial engines power these historic WWII aircraft. See some of the
old planes your father, grandfather or grandmother learned to fly for
World War II.
Admission is $15 per CAR at the gate or $10 per car if ticket is purchased
in advance online (check our website or facebook page for details)
and earns you a day of aircraft and military vehicle displays, museum
exhibits and fun.

THE TITMOUSE CLUB
The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored
by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every
Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September
until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester
Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include
nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. For more

Docents. The cost is $5 per child per session or a 5-session card can be
purchased for $20. The child must be accompanied by an adult during the

Nature Explorers Club is designed for school-age children (ages 6-10, K-5 th )
who are interested in investigating the natural world. Each month we will
explore a different ecology topic, focusing on our own native plants and
animals. We will make a craft to take home, go on a nature hike, dip-net
for fish and tadpoles in the ponds and get to know the plants and animals

OWL PROWLS
Houston Audubon Docent Guild sponsors 4 owl prowls for the 2017-18
season. Owl prowls begin with a lively program on owls including an
opportunity to meet live, rehabilitated owls followed by a walk in the
woods in search of wild owls. For more information, to reserve and pay
online go to www.houstonaudubon.org. Owl Prowl dates - March 9,
2018. Owl Prowls start at 7 PM, end at 9 PM and begin in the log cabin
at the Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary. The fee is $12 for adults and $8
for children (ages 6-17). All prowlers must be at least 6 years of age and
there must be at least one adult present for each two children. Dress for
walking in the woods and the weather. Please park in the Memorial Drive
United Methodist Church west parking lot at 12955 Memorial Drive or the
Sanctuary’s small lot at 440 Wilchester. Pre-registration is required and
there is a maximum number of participants for each prowl.

Hot Fruit Compote
You could make this on National Fruit Compote Day March 1 st !
INGREDIENTS:
1 (16 ounce) can pears in juice
1 (15 ounce) can peaches in juice
1 (15 ounce) can pitted cherries in water
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1/2 cup brown sugar, divided
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter, cut in small pieces
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour
pears, peaches and cherries with their liquids into the prepared baking dish, stir.
Stir oats and 1/4 cup brown sugar together in a bowl, sprinkle over the fruit mixture.
Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar over the oat layer. Sprinkle cinnamon over the
brown sugar. Arrange butter pieces evenly over the top. Bake until hot, bubbly and slightly
brown at edges, about 20 minutes.
Serve over waffles, pancakes, scones or shortbread. Also great served warm over vanilla
ice cream!

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup roasted peanuts
2 cups crispy rice cereal
DIRECTIONS:
In a medium heat-proof bowl, melt together the chocolate chips and condensed milk in
the microwave. Stir frequently until melted and smooth. Stir in the peanuts and rice cereal
until well blended. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto waxed paper. Chill 2 hours to set.
